Happy holidays, Ryan; best of luck towards your next series of essays! 🥰Here are my ritual recommends that I'm hoping you tackle in the new year: As Above, So Below (2014) Mr. Jones (2013) Underworld series (2003-2017) Soulmate (2013)
Angelic lore being a contradictory pile of apocrypha and errata notwithstanding, I'm quite sure that at least one origin of lucifer was as a leader of one of the heavenly choirs. Probably the highest one, but the inconstant taxonomy of angels makes naming which that is problematic. Of course, an angelic choir is essentially a bunch of semi-divine beings actively aggrandizing their creator, master and reason for existing. They are central to the organization of heaven and ontologically serve as a direct symbol of God as master of all things, and thereby enforcing the fact that the universe also must exist, by his will. So it's actually a pretty high position, and also a big deal that Lucifer rebelled as he did(obviously).
I remember this amazing bit from one of Roger Ebert's movie books: "Q. Why did Arnold go through all that trouble to keep the Devil from impregnating Robin Tunney in "End Of Days" when all he had to do was impregnate her first? Now that would be a movie. (Patrick Franklin, Norman OK) A. It would also be the world's greatest pickup line: "Quick--let me impregnate you before the Devil does!""
I should point out the Y2K bug a was a real problem. The reason nothing came of it is because millions of dollars and tons of man hours were dumped into *correcting* it before it became an issue.
Wow, I can't believe we've reached the end of another yearly era of "Hoyever." Your first 2021 video on House on Haunted Hill doesn't feel that long-ago to be honest! But regardless, thank you so much Ryan: for consistently remaining one of my favorite YT movie critics, for keeping me always anticipating your fantastic breakdowns on all these (mostly) underappreciated works, and inspiring me towards creating my own movie essays! See you next year. 😊
Actually, I would argue that the technical concerns surrounding Y2K and computers were very real. If you know much about programming, time and the calendar year are actually significantly more entwined in code than the average person would think. The potential knock-on effects of time essentially not existing any more as far as computers were concerned could have been numerous and crippling. The only reason were didn't experience them was because of a rushed effort pre-Y2K to recode calendars and time in the way computers see them. It wouldn't have led to an evil AI takeover of the world, but it very well could have led to the kinds of computer errors that shut down entire networks as well as individual computers. Imagine being on a flight where the computer of the plane died at the stroke of midnight because no one had overhauled the code. Imagine being in a city where computers controlled streetlights, and all of them shut down at once for a protracted length of time, or even worse, went haywire and started flashing random colors for random durations. These and more were potential outcomes of not fixing this problem.
Exactly. I wasn't old enough to understand this myself but alot of co-workers have told me about how much work they had to put in to help customers and their own companies fix their applications. The amounts of money that was poured in to fix this was massive
I really feel like this movie is underrated, the portrayal of Satan is one of the best in cinema IMO, and I have to disagree on Arnie not being able to portray this character. I think he does a bang up job honestly, his more emotional scenes in this movie are honestly moving to me.
The problem with the movie is it wants to be serious while at the same time it wants to be an Arnold action film the tones don't mesh. Arnold still walks around giving one-liners and is shooting the shit out of Satan which doesn't fit the tone of the movie. If you can just accept the movie as Arnold vs Satan and judge it on that level then it's a good harmless B movie Arnold flick.
I think it's relatively underrated. We watched End Of Days and The Relic, also by Hyams on the same evening. We did not realize it was the same director at the time. We had a really nice surround system and there was a summer storm outside so in terms of the audio experience, it was WAY up there. I feel The Relic has held up better but both were good watches. Love his cinematography and lighting.
Love the Relic, hope to get a 4K release for more popular exposure. The monster Kothoga design and concept is still my complete favorites just after Godzilla. I would love to read the books the film is based off of, however they're old and the only ones available in hardcover are the newer ones that most people may not know is a part of the first and second book. Which would also be cool as a sequel adapted where there are multiple Kothoga creatures. Maybe a good remake is needed for this.
The thing that sticks out to me about this movie is that body horror incest threesome, where they're all sort of merging together. It's freaked the hell out of me for years, and sometimes will just pop into my head to ruin my week. Excellent video, happy holidays to you, Ryan!
Trying to explain this movie to my husband was literally 'the devil fucks his wife and daughter and its fuckibg messed up and a church explodes. Arnie is there.' Cause that's all.i remembered
You should check out "Devil's Advocate", starring Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron, and, drumroll please: MF Al Pacino! Hell said yes to this movie. It shouldn't work, on the surface, but by the end, when you're recounting every detail, boom, it all clicks. Pacino is PERFECT as the devil. Keanu actually carries his role of "small Southern town lawyer" pretty well, and Charlize, well she's just wonderful to have around in that film. She just plays her role so well, it's heartbreaking, really.
Clearly, you've never seen "Maggie" if you think Schwarzenegger can't act. Man I saw this movie as a kid and it's stuck with me for decades. I rewatch it every few years. Loved Byrne as Satan, he's my favorite part of the movie.
I was actually just thinking this but didn't want to make a fool of myself If no one agreed. Happy that I scrolled through some comments and to see more people actually appreciating the performance he gave in Maggie :)
Arnold is definitely one of the actors we've been able to see refine his craft over the years. Watching this or The Running Man then watching Maggie the example I've seen all over this comment section back to back really showcases how he's grown over the decades.
"Jericho Cain" and "Bobby Chicago" feel like template names that got left in by mistake. Writer 1: Hey, what should we call our hero for this Revelations movie? Writer 2: Pick some random names from the Bible. We'll come up with something more subtle later.
Watching this back to back w/ stigmata really formed the moral center of my childhood. I also developed a huge crush on Gabriel Byrne that has, to this day, never gone away. Also this is a Christmas horror movie I try to watch every year.
Hey Ryan, I feel like Arnold IS capable of playing an emotionally complex character, to illustrate this, look no further than the film "Maggie" which tells the story of a daughter infected with an incurable disease, gradually depriving her of her humanity and Arnold (The father) struggling with doing the right by ending her suffering before the worst case scenario and the last semblance of memory he has left of his wife as well as the life they once had.
Maggie was excellent and a very interesting choice for Arnold. I only wish he had continued on that path and tried more roles out of his usual wheelhouse.
Arnold prooobably decided that playing badasses is better for his brand. And now he's old and I don't think he wants to exert the effort. Not on _that._
@@dongeraci8599 In my personal opinion, a lot of emotion can be portrayed through other means; facial expressions and body language being the two main avenues of conveyance. One of Nicholas Cage's best performances had him with minimal spoken lines but still managed to create an endearing character that you could root for in the film "Mandy" as an example. But if you think the amount of spoken lines defines how good a role and actor is, by all means go ahead my guy, no offence
I think perhaps you should view Gabriel Byrne's episode on Inside the Actors Studio. He gives Arnie far more credit for his acting in this film then you do. I think it might be worth watching for a reevaluation of Arnie's efforts.
Great video Ryan, really enjoyed the ones you've been making this year and looking forward to seeing what comes in 2022. Hope everyone has a good and safe Christmas and a New Year!
I’m surprised it’s taken this long to talk about this insanity. Weird how Y2K year decided to put Gabriel Byrne in 2 religious films, but in different roles. Another movie that had to make us kiss our asses goodbye when people thought Y2K would kill us all
I love ALL of these biblical horrors. This movie, Stigmata, Lost Souls, Bless the Child. Prophecy 1-3 and Legion are also fun. Are they good movies? No. Did they completely enthrall me as a sheltered child raised in church and taught to genuinely fear these entities? Yes. They were effective for me at the time, and that makes them so nostalgic now. I can see how they might not be for everyone though. I would probably not recommend them to anyone unless you like one of those movies already.
I remember watching this one as a kid, I think it was right after watching Predator with Arnie in it and it blew me away, I expected that he would fistfight the Devil or something lol Edit: I miss religious schlock like this, the 90s we're wild
We need someone to compile an end-of-year b-roll of all the Hoyevers. Not for any real reason, just finishes. Have a great holiday, Ryan. Thanks for all you do.
This was the first time I ever saw Arnie actually act and act well, besides being the terminator where he’s usually quiet or has a small amount of lines. I loved this movie
Being born in 1980, I was bit young for this movie when came out. (I was also a complete wimp when it came to scary movies. Even now, I’m still just wading my way into them. You’re videos actually made me curious, and now I’m finding more and more that I like.) I do how ever remember the t.v. spots for it, and hearing you talk about this movie did allow me to enjoy a strange wave of nostalgia.

To be fair to the Y2K crowd, programmers had to work pretty hard to get computers to register 2000 as a year ahead of time. MANY thanks for keeping some of us sane during yet another lunatic year. Your familiar voice and unique perspective on films is like hanging out with an old friend. Enjoy your holiday break, my dude.
Maybe next Christmas Ryan could look at some of the BBC's Ghost Stories for Christmas from the 1970s like The Signalman, Stigma and The Ash Tree. Possibly some of the special effects haven't aged greatly but they're still steeped in atmosphere and I'd really like to see his take on it.
I got a soft spot for this movie.. I remember this and Stigmata came out around the same time and I had to do the double feature.. blockbuster style lol
I think you should take a look at another Arnie film which he does he best in. "Maggie" is a surprisingly touching film in the zombie genre while only using it as a backdrop for an emotional vehicle of a film
I remember my mom renting this movie from Blockbuster when it came out. At the time I hated horror movies so I felt betrayed by seeing Arny on the cover and then being to scared to watch the whole film.
I absolutely LOVE this film, me and my sisters rented it multiple times when we were kids. This film is one of those rare instances where the dub actually improves the experience, specially with Arnold's role. Also, I love how dirty everything looks, it helps the idea of everything coming to an end even though that aesthetic had turned into a cliche already. The ending is absolutely badass 🔥 Thanks for discussing this film, it was great hearing your perspective, as always.
I once tricked my aunt into watching Maggie saying it's a slow burn film laughed my ass off when she told me she had believed in me only to see the credits roll waiting for the action that never came
My dad is a huge Schwarzenegger fan so I was raised with a lot of his movies just playing around me. Now I’ve inherited my enjoyment of his work and it’s always nice to see other people enjoying his work! It can be dark, funny, gory, schlocky, serious, self aware… but I can’t help but love it! Except Junior. What even was that?
I loved this film as a kid. I used to ways get emotional at the end, specially with the end credits song. I haven't watched it in years, but I have a lot of good memories from End of Days. Happy to see it talked about here.
I know this was just last month but I miss new Hoyevers. Thank you for all the videos. I've watched so much new horror thanks to your videos and really found a new and exciting hobby. You really rock Ryan.
Weirdly enough I just revisited this movie two days before your video. I largely agree with you and also it's been a stressful time for all of us. Thank you for your content. Happy New Year!
I have a deep love for Schwarzenegger and 80's action movies in general. At this time my friends parents had just got a brand new entertainment system and this movie was one of the first movies I got to watch on DVD. And if you remember the big hype around DVD at the time then you probably understand why this film has an extra special place in my heart.
The funny thing is that Schwarzenegger made some really daring and fascinating choices in roles basically as soon as he had the clout to do so. The Terminator, The 6th Day, Totall Recall, the Running Man, they were all really interesting sci fi movies (admittedly in the most '80s ways). Obviously the debate of whether he had the skills to pull it off are there, but still. Even a lot of his action movies had interesting conceits that hadn't been done before.
I remember this movie, I watched it ONCE and thought, what is THIS? My mom is a die hard Schwarzenegger fan and had me watching his movies since I can remember (By 5 years old I had watched both Terminator movies, Predator, both Conans too) and spent the rest of my life watching all his stuff even the weird ones (Junior, Jingle all the way, Kindergarten Cop) and I had never heard of this MOVIE!!! I dont think it even made it into theatrical release in my country!
Ryan: "This is your last chance to get off this train". Me: "Fuck no I'm not getting off this train! Full speed ahead dammit!" Also Merry Christmas dude. Stay safe and thanks for a year of videos and inspiration.
I actually think Arnold is a pretty good physical actor in serious moments, it's just the dialogue he can't pull off, which is unavoidable. But he was really good in Maggie and Escape Plan. He can do the facial expressions and body language surprisingly well imo
Perfect timing!!! And hey, Byrne's a crafty dude, he was just covering his bases you know jic. ;) But why not use Liam, Denzel, Brad or any of the others that could have nuanced the hell out of Jericho, that with Byrne might've worked.
@@theitfactorjameswheezer2852 Cruise was good in Magnolia but there had to be room for a few names between Tom and Arnold. And damn if it had been directed by either of those, that would've been a whole other level.

Wow, I was literally just about to go to Mr. Ryan Hollinger's channel to check if I missed a video recently.
I got a soft spot for this movie.. I remember this and Stigmata came out around the same time and I had to do the double feature.. blockbuster style lol
Thanks for all the fantastic videos, mate. Hope you have a merry xmas and a happy and safe new year.
This is my early teen years, i love this 90s religous horror...
End of Days, Prophecy, Stigmata,etc...
this channel is one of the only channels i have notifications on for, truly amazing, thought provoking, entertaining videos every time.
I think you should take a look at another Arnie film which he does he best in. "Maggie" is a surprisingly touching film in the zombie genre while only using it as a backdrop for an emotional vehicle of a film
I love when Ryan covers movies I saw in my childhood and as of 30 minutes ago forgot existed. That's why I love ya
I was in on all of these late 80s/90s devil movies. End of days, Angel Heart, The Devil's Advocate, Fallen, etc, couldn't get enough.
The Prophecy as well.
Such a crazy movie, love trying to explain it and get my husband to watch it.
Cant wait to see what you do next year. Merry Christmas
I remember my mom renting this movie from Blockbuster when it came out. At the time I hated horror movies so I felt betrayed by seeing Arny on the cover and then being to scared to watch the whole film.
When i was 13 me and my friend I went and saw A Bugs Life and End of Days back to back in the cinema. Good old times!
What a weird combination of films. Antz came out at that time as well.
I am loving your review on all these 90s and early 2000 movies I watched as a kid.
Happy Holidays, Ryan!
The soundtrack was amazing and this is a guilty pleasure
I’ve been waiting for your take on the mostly forgotten STIGMATA for a while now so you mentioning it had me *hyped*.
I forgot how much I used to love this movie as a kid. For some reason, they played it once a year after Christmas on TV
Literally just watched this yesterday! Perfect timing!
This movie and Stigmata are both horrifically underrated. Absolutely.
Oh yeah, I love jingle all the way!
What a crazy year. Thank you as always for all the content! One of my fave channels to run to
I absolutely LOVE this film, me and my sisters rented it multiple times when we were kids. This film is one of those rare instances where the dub actually improves the experience, specially with Arnold's role. Also, I love how dirty everything looks, it helps the idea of everything coming to an end even though that aesthetic had turned into a cliche already.
The ending is absolutely badass 🔥
Thanks for discussing this film, it was great hearing your perspective, as always.
Y2K is why the matrix worked so good back then it just fit everything we was going threw while addressing the unknown
The director Peter Hyams also did Timecop & The Relic. Guy was master of the 90s guilty pleasure.
I'm just gonna say the one great acting performance Arnold gave was in "Maggie "
I once tricked my aunt into watching Maggie saying it's a slow burn film laughed my ass off when she told me she had believed in me only to see the credits roll waiting for the action that never came
@@sonicthesnake ha! That's great!
He was also very good in Aftermath.
See you in the new year, Ryan! Your content is always a pleasure!
One of my favorite 90s guilty pleasures. It's not a good movie by any means but it had its moments and you can never go wrong with Arnold.
Thanks for all your videos Ryan. My favorite channel by far!
As someone who worked for three years updating old code, the Y2K bug could have created chaos in the financial world. There were thousands like me.
There could be an awesome round table discussion or podcast where everyone reminisce the movie and does Arnold quotes and impressions
Love it when you remind me of these old ass movies from my childhood. Good work man!
Happy holidays Ryan, thank you for the all the great content over the years! Looking forward to what you create in '22 and beyond.👍👍🎄✨️🙋♂️
I just rewatched this last week! Love this movie and Lost Souls (2000) were VERY underrated imho!
Merry christmas Ryan and I wish the best for you in the next year.
Oh man I'm so glad I'm not the only one with this movie in my Christmas watch rotation
I miss seeing Kevin Pollak in decent movies. Loved his Chat Show & would love to get him back in more dark dramas.
Have you covered stigmata? That movie freaked me out as a kid
Maybe that will be in next year’s roster if we’re lucky
Happy holidays Ryan, thanks for all the entertainment in 2021, always look forward to a video. Enjoy your time off, see you next year.
Great work, as always. Happy holidays dude.
Yes Ryan! I was just talking with my spouse about this movie last week! Thank youuuuu!!!
I liked this movie Back Ago, Im from Hungary and Arnie's voice was synchronised by a great voice and that guy added to Arnie's performance.
First "hoyevver" drops at 1:38. Praise be to Him for his bounteous generosity. He rewards us for our devotions.
I remember coming across this by accident. But ended up enjoying it.
Yo that scene in Stigmata when her face is all messed up and she's speaking in that voice terrified me as a kid. Lol great vid Ryan!
Thanks again for the vids, greatly appreciate the work. Stoked to see what you do next year!
You're my favorite! Happy holidays to you and yours
Ryan: "This is your last chance to get off this train".
Me: "Fuck no I'm not getting off this train! Full speed ahead dammit!"
Also Merry Christmas dude.
In the underrated "End of Days" under noticed autuer Peter Hyams helmed one of the best Arnold vehicles outside of Cameron and McTiernan.
Perfect timing!!! And hey, Byrne's a crafty dude, he was just covering his bases you know jic. ;) But why not use Liam, Denzel, Brad or any of the others that could have nuanced the hell out of Jericho, that with Byrne might've worked.
It was written for Tom cruise, but he turned it down to do magnolia
Kate Winslet and Liv Tyler were also supposed to be Robin Tunney
It was also gonna be directed by either Sam Raimi and Guillermo Del Toro
@@theitfactorjameswheezer2852 Cruise was good in Magnolia but there had to be room for a few names between Tom and Arnold. And damn if it had been directed by either of those, that would've been a whole other level.
