I absolutely love the E28. Purchased an ‘87 rust free 525i manual with 55 000 miles in Lachssilber in Spain 5 years ago. Drove it all the way home (Belgium), a 2000km road trip. Lowered it a bit, fitted 8x16 E38 honeycomb (style5) wheels and a Simons sports exhaust. Absolutely love that car, I get positive comments and thumbs up almost every week, it is ubercool.
@@superbimmerbros It sounds pretty good, it makes the car so enjoyable to drive. I actually fitted the 528i system, with bigger downpipes, so it breathes better, as the 525i was restricted in power by BMW.
That's awesome, congrats! That thing is practically still in the break in period 🤣 what color? No one will understand how smooth it is until they drive one. It really does drive like a dream!
I agree! My only car is my e28 ('87 535is) and after taking care of what needed to be done it's been reliable. Took a road trip from NY to Santa Fe, NM and back with zero issues. Like you said, it's been pretty friendly to work on and there's nothing crazy complex. Glad to see someone else enjoying these!
Hey Michael! We are very happy to hear that the chassis has also treated you well. We hope you enjoy it for many more years to come! We are definitely not getting rid of it because it's simply an awesome car all around. Cheers! 🙏
A good honest chassis and drivetrain, and the tall greenhouse makes for easy maneuvering and pleasant sightseeing, not to mention distinctive good looks.
One of the great things about these cars is the style won't ever get outdated... well, I mean any more than it already has. lol. I can park in a lot filled with exotics worth six figures or more, and not feel out of place. Even though it's value isn't much more than a typical new Toyota, it gets comments from everyone.
Awesome! We are so happy to hear that so many people really do love their e28s! Even when they don't run, which says a lot a lot about these cars. You're very welcome and thank you for commenting! 🙂🙌
The only problem with encouraging more people to buy them is that a lot of parts have become far more expense and difficult to obtain. When I bought my E28 around 18 years ago, parts were everywhere and super cheap. I could buy entire parts cars all day long for $500. New old stock, and OEM new parts were easy to come by. Now, they've become insanely expensive. Hopefully, more aftermarket suppliers will step in and produce what is no longer available direct from BMW.
We are starting to see that as well! Nowhere near what the E30 market has become but it's sadly getting there, hopefully the enthusiast market sparks up some demand to keep making these parts 🙏
Everything you said is spot on! It truly is the perfect daily driver. I daily drove my E28 (528e) for the last five years, never gave me any problems. Unfortunately, it was totaled in a hit and run. However, I just got another one with an M50 swap, so I plan on swapping all my parts like suspension and brakes into that one and continue hauling ass🤘🏼
Thank you very much! I enjoy it more and more everyday. Sorry to hear about that! 😫 But happy to hear you replaced it! That sounds so awesome. I contemplated that same swap but sourced an m30 much quicker so I might do it to my E12 now 😅How does it run? Does the extra power compliment the chassis?
It feels good, a good match for the chassis. The best way I can describe it, is that it feels like a smoother and quicker M20B25. More power at the top, which is what the B27 lacks.
Hi SBB, I'm actually purchasing a 2nd 535is on the weekend, can't wait. Love those cars very much, the styling, the 80's of them just make them special. Wish I could drop off my cars to your shop and sort all the things that need to be addressed. Please make as much e28 content as possible . Love the videos guys!! Keep it up. Thanks!!
Hey there! Congrats on the second car 🥳The IS in our opinion is the most gorgeous of them all (other than the M5 of course 😅) we would love to see where you take that build! We strongly believe that the styling from the 80's is unbeatable, it produced truly timeless driving machines. Our doors are always open to you and the members of our tight knit community (even if it's virtual) 🙌 we appreciate all your support! Thank you!
533I from 1984 with upgraded 3.5 engine transmission and LSD, with the brakes out of a 1992, 735I. This is my eleventh BMW, and second E-28. Best daily driver I've had! Much more fun commuter than a diesel pickup living in the Rocky Mountains.
Hey John! The M30 is the way to go! What ratio LSD do you have? We are on our way to building an m30 for boost and would love to make sure it can handle highway crushing without getting too high on the rpms. Thank you for your comment! 🙏
@@superbimmerbros 3.08 is the ratio I believe in that car. I'll check, I didn't build this diff. Have it written down in the safe at home. I'm doing a boosted E-36 right now also. Going to be extremely track focused.
@@johnwieboldt1969 I've never heard of a 3.08 in a E28. Stock was 3.25, then there was the 3.46, and the 2.93 in the 528e. I've got a 3.73 in my 535i, which is perfect for carving mountain roads, although not ideal for flat out drives on open highways for long distances.
Had to run mine as a daily for a year or so, after I got sick of constantly fixing my E60... the E60 was a 545i, manual with sport package, and low miles... something broke every time I looked at it. The Euro E28 525i broke once... and that was only because a chipmunk decided to hang out next to the belts, and promptly got chewed up by the alternator belt!
Great contents! I might add: no car payments and cheaper insurance. And if you can turn your own wrench, more power to you. I own the e82 128i. They're newer but has the simplicity like the older BMWs. I'm starting a youtube vlog soon. Thanks for the inspirations! Looks like you're in Southern CA. I'm in San diego. Good luck with your youtube venture!
Anthony thank you for the comment and your support! My brother and I were just talking about how if we wanted to buy a newer chassis it would be a 1 series chassis with the n55! They are seriously cool cars! We hope to meet you sometime soon let's stay in touch! Best of luck to you as well 🙌
Ive owned and restored an E21, E28, E30, E36 M3, and E39 M5...The E28 535is looks the sickest with the modified European bumpers/grill. The M3 is the nimblest and the M5 is a straight up beast that's loaded with torque. Going to slam the E28 on BAT this spring. Need to thin out the herd. Your correct about this platform- Super easy to work on and very reliable
Hey man! Thank you so much for the comment and we definitely agree with you! Every chassis has it's special characteristic and even the non m variants are such a pleasure to drive. My favorite part will always be the tuner after market support for them. There's something out there for each chassis, it may not be a huge market but it's there. Cheers! 🙏
I’m thinking about purchasing one as my first car and I’m willing to learn how to fix for any maintenance needed, but I’m curious to how much it would cost to get the bumpers replaced to be shorter like other builds
My e28 hasn’t given me as much luck with reliability as urs has and I’ve always made the joke “at least it looks good sittin there” when its left me stranded. I have an 88 535is m30b34
Hey sky! So the engine and transmission is the same (m20b27) with respect to the shifter floor and linkage and mounting to the subframe. So when or if you pick up an ETA or E 325 or 528 just know that those engine parts and electronics relating to the engine and harness are interchangeable, Other than that literally everything else is different 😅
It is definitely a legendary car in so many ways! thank you for your comment! 😁

Hi, as I'm looking for my first car I wanted to know if an e28 was a good choice, or should I stick with a more modern car for the moment? I'm not really a car guy tbh but I really like these
Like any classic unrestored car, you have to expect the unexpected because things WILL happen. We have luckily learned a lot these past few years and manage to do A LOT of preventative maintenance when purchasing them. With that being said, as long as you are ready to do the work when it's needed the car will treat you very well and you will surely enjoy it for years to come! If you get one that has been well maintained then it's even better! No one said enthusiasts all had to work on their own cars immediately. We all learn along the way. Modern cars have their own issues but it's the excitement of driving a true vintage analog car that makes it all worth it! 👍
I love it ! Except the US 🇺🇸 version with bumpers. Makes the car looks hideous. Otherwise that platform of E28, E12, E23 and E30 are the best 👌 production years of BMW. Each time I am down, I touch my E23 735i, the sound of the engine is ears-pulling-my-lips smiles 😊 . Thanks for sharing your passion!
Sonny , thank you so much for the comment! We definitely agree with you on the bumper situation 😂 we feel the same , we take a drive in any of our chariots to make a bad day turn good. We hope we can continue sharing our passion with all our enthusiast brothers for years to come! Cheers! 🙏
Jose thank you for commenting! Since the car is not technologically centered and shares engine internals and suspension parts with other chassis from this era they are generally inexpensive. As an example the tie rod assembly kit from fcp euro is only 160 dollars. This takes care of alot of slop from the steering that these cars tend to suffer from. It might not be as cheap as one might think but definitely not heavy on the wallet for basic maintenance! I hope this sways you to venture into e28 land 🙂
@@superbimmerbros Yeeks... I would say they're expensive. I've spend close to $30k on parts for my 535i over the years. But, all the parts are BMW OEM. Aftermarket is cheaper.
