When I was buying these in the early 90's, I always found rust starting in the front of the front doors where the door seal channel was attached , also rear subframe mountings and front floor pan to inner sill joint could be bad if cars had been damp inside, wings would rot just above the front bumper sides as well. An odd fault would be a click from the back under acceleration, e12's had the same problem and it was the back door latches, a smear of grease would usually stop it. 👍
I found an e28 535 with 87k miles (140km for my friends with the funny accents). I will be giving it a thorough inspection before I throw my money away. Thanks for the tips.
@@Darkknight21789 I am in the USA . I bought mine though a guy in the Netherlands. He found it in Germany for me and shipped it over. It is a 1989 318i touring. It has air conditioning, slick top, manual transmission, comfort interior, new headliner and overall is a great car. I've been using it for my daily driver for over 2 years now. It was owned by one family since new and taken very good care of. I haven't had to do much to it outside of regular maintenance. It currently has the m40 engine but I recently picked up a m42 out of a 318is and will be swapping it out. My goal is to build a touring version of a 318is that the factory never offered. Parts for the m40 are nearly impossible to find in the USA as it was never offered here. Mine is good but I want more power. My son has a 1991 318is and I just love driving it. I'd like to replicate that in my car.
@@Darkknight21789 regarding which to buy, it depends on your goals. The 316 & 318 are the cheapest ones. Personally I'd look for one that is rust free, well maintained and in as little need of repairs as possible. Then build to suit if you want higher performance. A nice quality touring 316/318 with nice options shouldn't cost you more than $12k in the US. I got mine for less than that. Shipping at the time was under 2k from Rotterdam to the west coast of the USA.

My 86 sat outside in So PA for 12 years but isn't as rusty as the one in video. I did replace a front quarter panel
I could swear I saw a mouse peeking at you from behind one of those rust holes.
Very helpful information. I've just begun looking at e28s and this is a big help. Thank you.
Did you manage to buy an e28 then? If yes, which one?
@@Darkknight21789 No. Not yet. I actually imported a e30 touring. The e28 is still on my list though.
@@SeventyRS excellent. Are you Uk based? Wondering which model
Is best to buy? Prices?

My e28 lower suspension strut spring cap has just rusted through and seems to be a common problem
I.v had about 10 e28, they can rust pretty bad😄
Check inside of doors water likes to stay there
