HOKA Challenger 7 Trail Running Shoe Review | ALL TERRAIN TESTED

- Can an all terrain shoe really take you anywhere? HOKA originally built the Challenger ATR for REI members who wanted an all-terrain running shoe-a shoe you could take from your front door to your local trails. I've seen every iteration of the Challenger line, and it's always felt more like a road running shoe that could handle some light trails, but the updates to the Challenger 7 have me thinking that HOKA flipped the script and built a trail shoe that also feels at home on the road! Is this the Challenger that you can use as a daily runner and really take anywhere?

Great review... He covered all the questions. I'm 50/50 gravel and Street, with some occasional light hiking. So I think these should fit me perfectly. 😅🤞🏾
I can’t wait to get these. Love the atr. I find them good for about any dry trail.
I'm a big fan of the challenger atr 6! Put in many miles in them and they still feel good! The Hoka Zinal is my absolute favorite trail shoe ever made! They are light, nimble, and give you feel while having a nice vibram litebase outsole! I loved Sauconys Koa Tr shoe before they discontinued it.
Great review
This looks like a good shoes for the El Camino road/Lt trail, airport/train.
The new look, color scheme, and plush tongue/breather upper is good transition to the Challenger ATR’s 👍
Yep. I'm glad not to have to wear an ugly Challenger anymore.
I literally value alans recommendations from head to toe.
Great vid! Would these be good for speed on roads and then jogging on light trails? If not, what shoe would you recommend for that?
Great review broski 😊amazing trails too
Not even really a runner, just wanted a decently light and cushioned shoe I can take on day hikes every now and then and I think these fit the bill pretty well. I do hike on some muddier and more technical bits sometimes so I’m a little concerned about how they do in those conditions, but I’m sure they can’t be any worse than when I would hike in Vans or my Arahi road shoes lol
Challenger 5 took some breaking in but ultimately was perfect for me, running about 1/3 on pavement and 2/3 on unpaved fire roads. Challenger 6 was slightly disappointing, feeling a little clunkier but otherwise fine. The upper wore out more quickly. I wish I loved the Challenger 7 but, unlike with the two previous models, I have heel-slippage that I can't fully get rid of.
looking closely in at the 3:50 mark, did the green outsole lug come off or unglued?
As someone with long dreads I'm wondering what's the beanie you use while running!
Is the sole tearing off at 3:49 ? 🤔
I'm looking for a good hiking shoe/boot for doing the Bright Angel tour to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Last year I walked down 3 miles wearing the Hoka Bondi 7's. I thought the extra cushioning would be enough. For this 6 mile round trip, it was sufficient but I was feeling the rocks a little too much. Next year I will be 65 and want to to do the full 15+ mile roundtrip hike to the bottom and back. I know I will need more underfoot protection for the full hike. I read that Trail Running shoes are great for hiking. Would these Hoka shoes work well for this hike? I did not see or hear that these have rock plate. Would a rock plate be needed for this type of trail? Great review btw. Helps a lot.
Stoked to hear that you'll be heading down to the river and back again next year! If you liked the Bondi's but needed a little more protection underfoot I do think you might like a max cushioned trail runner as your hiking shoe. Most max cushion trail runners don't have rock plates since there is so much foam underfoot. Usually the protection of the outsole thread paired with the substantial midsole should help you feel less obstructions on the trail. The Hoka Challenger is definitely a top contender as a max cushion hiker, but for that trip I might also consider both the Altra Olympus (which is a little more cushioned than the Challenger) and the Brooks Caldera (a little less cushioned than the Challenger) if you're interested in something that has a bit more trail specific tread to keep you confidently and comfortably exploring the beauty of The Canyon! -Alan
Training for the Camino Frances route of the Camino de Santiago right now and trying to decide between the Challenger 7 and Speedgoat 5 for my journey. The route is 500+ miles and I will be walking not running. Most of the trail is well groomed gravel and road with some days of up and down. I doubt there will be much technical terrain, if at all, but as I’m walking in the spring there could be some rain creating occasional muddy and slippery conditions. My two main concerns are: 1. How well will the Challenger 7 outsole last on 500 miles vs. the Vibram outsole of the Speedgoat 5? And 2. Will I be more comfortable walking long distances with the more plush cushion of the Challenger 7 vs. the more balanced cushion of the Speedgoat 5?
Thank you for this video by the way. I love this style of video and how thorough you are.
9:06 Same for me, plan is for 2024 Spring. Great question. Lets get an answer, please.
Those were my top picks as well. I decided to go with the Challenger 7 because I figured I'd get more use out of them. Like he said as much as I would like to do exotic hikes weekly, I'm more likely to step out my house and run to my local park. I feel like the speed goats looked a little more stiff and trail focused. Stiffer trail shoes tend to make my ankles and calves fatigue quickly.
I just came to figure out is it waterproof?
No. But that may be a good thing because otherwise it would hold water and be pretty warm.
I like the shoes because i have bad knees.
They all look like you're wearing your mum's shoes. That weird distance at the back of the shoe between the ankle and the elf tab. Weird.
Agreed. Sooooo goofy!
I think they’re just wearing the shoe a couple sizes too big. You can see the shoe in the back lift up and off of his ankle.
@@mvc1972 seemed like it.
I saw it and was thinking surely I am not seeing that right but I guess not. A review of a shoe that does not fit is hard to take seriously.
That “ Weird distance” is there because it’s a hybrid shoe running on trails and roads.
There to big for you no?
Might just be the extra cushioning making it look big?
