Oh hi, my jaw feels weird. Also, I got a little carried away with this week's class, took a while
I feel ya Marc, I have tmj so my jaw pretty much feels weird 24/7. Hang in there!
I needed this so bad!! Thank you! ☺️
Please 🥺 make a tutorial on prop and costume designe 😭
😀
You better have an awesome weekend too, Sensei!!!
"I'm not making any progress. Am I stupid?"
"...Maybe."
That's the kind of dialogue I wasn't expecting but enjoy. Thanks for making my personal thoughts almost tangible.
I'm turning 29 this month and I just started drawing 3 months ago. thank you so much Marc, without you I would never have believed it was possible for myself to learn, that it was too late. You've given me something to be passionate about again and it means so much and I wish you nothing but success and happiness.
Welcome to art. It's never too late. I know two examples of celebrated artists from memory and I'm sure there are many more: Grandma Moses (started at 78) and Henri Rousseau (started in his 40's can't remember the specific age).
30 year old beginner, reporting in! We got this 😉
I bet your art is cool asf
@@ozzyozzy2904 maybe it will be but I'm still grinding basic shape and anatomy xp
Connor Ryan do you post your art anywhere ?
im taking a character design class right now and i was kinda blank on ideas. the “you should be able to describe your character in one sentence” will be a good place for me to start! thank you for the reminder, its generating ideas already :)
How long should a sentence be really? Because it could go on and on. I think the ideal sentence is like 12 to 15 words
@@SilvaShadow1990 I would say it should be an appropriate sentence. if it's a run-on sentence, you either need to rethink your character or rethink your sentence. for my project, my sentence was "robot lab assistant gains sentience and plans to release all of the tortured lab animals." it sets up a character (robot), the character's brief backstory/origin (being a lab tech), something that changed the character's life in order to put them on the path of their "quest" (gaining sentience aka gaining empathy) and establishes the character's goal/desire (releasing the tortured animals). This is for a project that requires some backstory, but if you're just drawing a throwaway one-time character then you probably don't need to think about it that deeply. i hope that answered it at least a little bit, sorry for the late reply :)
@@SilvaShadow1990 how big is the sentence depends on for what the characters is for, i think what he meant by that one sentence is like having a bunch of character side by side, and being able to say a visual clue that makes it stand out...
Ofc you could go on and on about the sentence, the problem would be if you could not give anything.
@@l0kk016 much love
Just do the fist thing that comes to mind it doesn’t have to be complex juts what you want to do and their are no bad ideas!
Nothing feels better than a Hook for new character. My favorite is: "Girl with skinny, delicate figure with a Hammer larger than she is."
we found a new LN title
@@smugtrap2690 more like "i got reincarnated as a girl with a skinny, delicate figure and now I wield a hammer bigger than myself so i can defeat the demon lord"
That is just an ikekai title.
Amy rose
Appreciate your effort, mate. I hope you'll stay as long as possible. Every weekly video is kind of a potion to reload my mana
I really liked this "starter Pack" theme. Maybe make a similar one on backgrounds? that way we have characters + backgrounds.
Marc: Books, if you're into that... gross.
Me: **sad book noises**
How does the man know exactly what we need when we need it? Incredible ⭐⭐⭐
YES
Don't mind me. Just taking some notes:
Skill Points:
Gesture Drawings: IIIII, practice abstraction, observe gesture (energy(opp of stiffness), the pose, portions. Throw out everything else. Keep the essence.
Construction: IIII, recipe behind a pose. Notes on how to achieve certain results. Bare minimum, Simple shapes, and volumes that make up the body. Assembling each piece into a bigger picture. Main goal: Construct these pieces w/o too much effort. Ult goal: Draw them w/o looking at ref.
Perspective: II, less is more with this. Min knowledge. Knowing where the horizon is, drawing volumes, vanishing points.
Anatomy: IIII, Closing the silhouettes, adding muscles/bones/definition. Can't find your style till you get good at anatomy. Learn big muscles(shoulder, pecs, traps, abs, obliques, lats, glutes, QUADDDDDs, hamstrings, and calves.
Clothed Figures: III Find refs of models in simple outfits. Pants, capes, dresses, shirts, etc. Practice folds.
Design: IIII What makes it yours? Consistent shape language, how well the drip matches. Good to repeat shapes. Hook
Color Theory: |||| How you arrange colors. Main Goal: Guide the viewer towards the focal point. Often the face. 3 Characteristics: Hue, Saturation, and value.
I don't ever comment on RUclips cuz im lazy but I wanna say I watch every single one of your videos as soon as it comes out and it rly helps me stay motivated and confident in my journey to becoming a professional artist. I still have a long way to go but I just wanna say thank you for making this journey so much better with your videos :)
Honestly this is the order I thought made the most sense but hearing a professional confirm that gives me confidence and more faith in it
HOLY CRAP!!!! You are a godly artist! :0
I hope 25 isn't too late to pursue art? I drew a lot as a kid but stopped when I was 11 and didn't start drawing again until I was 19 but made art on and off until I was 23 and quit again because I felt like I would never be good at it but recently after turning 25 I decided I should stick with it and become an artist because I love art and I want to be an artist. I'm glad I found your channel I feel so inspired and motivated.
Fantastic video! As someone that can't afford fancy art colleges, I really appreciate content and material like this! It gives me hope that I can still learn and improve my work and become a better artist without going into debt 😅 Creators like you are highly valued in my book! Thanks and keep it up Marc!
my favourite art teacher on youtube, concise accurate info presented in a fun way! love your work, thanks so much man :)
Wow, thank you sooo much Marc. This came out at a perfect time as I am just really getting into character design. Your videos are always helpful. Thank you 🙇🙇🙇🙇
I am trying to get into character art for a long time now.. so this video is a blessing. Thank you so much!
Man, it's not often that I take the time to watch art videos, but I must say, I'm happy to see you share your knowledges and create these resources for us to learn from. It's appreciated, and as someone who just draws from time to time as a hobby while struggling with motivation, your video here was uplifting to watch.
Right now I'm stucked and have no idea what to do or draw. I wanna draw and practice but I really felt lost. This video literally just saved me thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this video! I was searching for days and i couldn't find a single good video until now! Thank you for your effort to make this!
You have no idea how much your videos helped me improve, seriously greatful
I just love fantasy warrior and adventurer drawings. like the magic the gathering cards and stuff like that. So i just looked up cool characters on pinterest and try my best to copy it. And if i can't draw something fairly well i try to look up a tutorial for it. i guess it kinda works. I just bought color pencils the other week and have been trying to learn how to color and shade etc.
It became so much more fun when i added color to it all instead of just sketching.
I hope i am not wasting my time by doing this :P
that's how majority of us start, it'll be easier to start doing your own structures and features afterwards too
I try to do that too with the design of robots, I am surprised how good Pinterest is for gathering inspiration on what to draw.
Im an progressing artist and Marc really helped me a lot in revising these knowledge and to be a better artist. All the best to Marc and his student fellas and hope to join the classes someday soon.Peace yo!
I really wish there would be someone who teaches like you for (digital) sculpting. Keep up the good work.
When I think of hooks for my characters it makes me realize, maybe my chars ain't that bad after all. Ty again for a video I keep watching these even when I'm on a break. These keep me wanting to return back to art someday and find the lost joy.
Thank mark , your tips is really helpful , I just started a few months ago, hopefully one day i can be good enough to draw my own character
Thanks for making these videos, because of them my art has improved so much!
This is like a Full Course 🔥🔥 Paired with all the videos you've mentioned in the Cards (I've watched almost all) this is a full guide for artists. Gonna recommend it to anyone who asks the how of Character art.
And I know you read all comments so: Awesome Work Mark 🔥🔥 Mind-blowing stuff ⚡💯
yeah, I guess this is a sign. I love making up characters since I was a kid. been drawing my whole life in and out because I can't get a hold of any inspiration to pursue it. now I've been drawing more than I was in the pass 10 years. thank you for your videos, time to grind those exp, specially in color theory, coz that's the one thing i suck most in, in all of these.
I'm so blessed to find your channel.

I’m really glad that I’m able to rewatch these videos and gain knowledge and reassurance. I work full time and for the past couple of months, I’ve been sketching when I have free time. Sometimes, I lose my way and feel like I’m not doing enough, but whenever I watch your videos, I just know that it’s just part of the process and I’m gradually getting there.

So it's been a year since i decided I completed my first drawing, and mostly i got the courage to start from watching your videos. I'm slowly improving, step by step, sometimes slower sometimes faster, but yeah really couldn't have kept drawing without your help. Free good method based advice is hard to come by! Thnx
Your videos got so much information and your tutorials are awesome! Thanks a lot Marc
I first started drawing when i was fourteen and I did for like three months, and there was noticeable improvements. I am picking it up again coming up on a decade later because when I was *14* I thought it was too late for me to start drawing, especially knowing of my cousins who were both great at drawing at that same age. Biggest mistake of my life to stop.
This helps me a lot my drawings was looking stiff until I realize I’m skipping the first step which is gesture drawing helped me out a ton thanks
I started drawing back in 2019, and have seen only little growth since I started. Allot of my passion and excitement faded and it depressed me, because I really liked art but I wasnt progressing and I couldnt produce things that I envision. As I watch more of these videos, I get some of that excitement back because I see a way forward. This time with some directions. I still cant help but feel anxious, because I am still only in my twenties, and life feels like its running ahead of me while I try to figure out what kind of like I want to lead for myself.
I swear all of your episode in this weekly series is Soo dang helpful
Hey, weird jaw you got there! Thank you so much for your videos. I picked up drawing again two weeks ago by really really wanting to become able drawing characters. This video helped me a great deal for organizing my notes, which i am taking while watching your videos. Thank you very much, i feel like i can really do it with your help. When i am less broke i hope to be able taking a class of yours!
Great video as always! Thanks for the new insights on what to study and how to do it!
I was sat staring at a blank page and i saw you posted this video !! it's like you knew. Love your content super helpful
New Marc video, now my weekend is complete
His tutorial always hit spot on.
I just wanted to drop a comment and say thank you for this and all of your content. As someone with autism I learn things in very peculiar ways and if it isn't phrased or explained in certain ways my mind will steadfastly refuse to learn a concept. As you were explaining perspective and horizon lines and the curvatures of objects in relation to the horizon line it finally was put into the context I needed to suddenly click. I've always heard the importance and been shown examples but no one has ever said it so straight, blunt, and to the point that it clicked before.
your humor is priceless Marc, still subscribed because of it, keep it up senpai
❤️ thanks for this starter pack , really appreciate you teaching us
I find your videos helpful. Thanks for making them and sharing them with us!
Thank you for your videos, they've helped me a lot since I started making art again. ❤

thank you man, your videos help me out a lot, especially the intros!
Your intros are genius! They are always different and humorous and catch the attention of the casual viewer. It was definitely one of the reasons why I subscribed, apart from the helpful info and pretty art. :)
My favorite part of the day is watching these videos while I have breakfast to get ideas for when I'm drawing later in the day. Seriously best class ever

Very glad I came across your page, awesome stuff! Let the learning begin : )
This is so timely! We are literally doing a character design plate.
Would like to see a video on how to “study”. Like what to think about when doing a “color study” or “master study”? I’m not sure what is actually ment when they say that or what to focus on to. Thank you 😁
You always know how to put me in a creative mood!
Thank just what I needed.
Thanks a lot Marc, I always find it very interesting to listen your ideas.
Thank you for helping me over the past 6 months Marc

Been grinding the crap out of gesture drawing trying to make them look alive, still needs work lol. I was wondering, should I be practicing just gesture drawings (because I am still a beginner) or should I be practicing all of these with just more emphasis on gesture
Thankss!!!
Hey, I was wondering if you could make a video on how to draw cloth and clothes and how it folds on a human body, really liking the series so far!
