The lenses have a soft focus. I have the moment case and the 3d printed mount. I was hoping to capture raw 48mp images with the moment 58mm tele and they were soft. I had clearer results with using the native lens and cropping in. It was a huge letdown.
The 58mm is the softest, but on the main wide it looks ok especially for video. Stills might be a different story. I found the anamorphic to be the best across the board.
I am a long time Moment gear user and I feel that this 2nd generation of lens is at the brink of their capabilities with the new iPhone14 pro max sensors. On your examples it's all very soft when the sky light is strong, one exception with the anarmophic that seems sharper and more contrasted most of the time. I would not be surprised if Moment announces a new generation of lenses for bigger sensors in a couple of months. Well timed review, thanks for sharing !
Yeah, my guess is they’ll wait for lens redesign for the iPhone 15 as that’s supposed to be a pretty big change. But for now the anamorphic performs the best and looks good across all the cameras, which was a bit surprising tbh. Thanks for watching!
Yeah, I think my moment lenses are going on to eBay. What they can offer the 14 Pro Max just…isn’t enough for me to justify carrying them around. If my 14 Pro Max can’t handle it, I’ll reach for my real camera, not the moment lenses anymore. Unless, as you said, if they have new Moment lens hardware coming soon. I’ll consider it then. But even then…the 15 Pro Max next year will again be better. I feel like we’re getting close to the limits of mobile photography with all these add-ons.

I invested in the 58mm Moment lens primarily for mounting onto the standard wide lens of my iPhone 14Pro. This gives me a wide AND tele option on the "main lens" accessing the iPhone's best resolution and low light aperture at all times.
Thanks for doing this. They do look soft. I think the problem lies a lot with these very small form factor lenses. They just don’t adapt well to the changing sensor sizes from Apple every year (anamorphic lenses seem to hold up a lot better). Companies like Beastgrip that use a larger form factor and update their lenses every year, seem to be able to get tack sharp results. Size appears to matter.
Yeah, the Beastgrip lenses, the latest ones importantly (like the MK2 anamorphic) are the best right now. The Moment anamorphic held up fine though and I think it’s the best currently from them. The other ones are OK depending on what you’re doing. Thanks for watching!
Awesome review as always. I own a 13 Pro max 1TB and all the MOMENT lenses including a GOVE variable ND filter and a SmallRig cage. I have found that all the lenses work well in most situations especially using the ND during the day really makes sharp photos & the video is super clear. Keep up the fantastic videos you produce. I had XS and with 58mm, it worked. When I bought the iPhone 14 pro and took shots with 58mm, I noticed a lot kf softness in the pictures. I sent email to moment re: softness of 58mm with iphone 14 pro vs pictures without 58mm in a well lit controlled setup. They confirmed that there lenses are outdated and they do not offer lifetime warranty for the product. Sad to say they do not even care anymore. So I bought Sandmarc 58mm for iPhone 14pro and was very pleased by the sharpness of the lens.
I mean I think softness in moderation can be good the thing with iPhones is they have extreme sharpness which in my opinion is too much I have yet to try the moment lens on my 14 hopefully the softness isn’t too much
Thanks for your review. Softness was what I worried for this year since they were getting worse from iphone 12 series. This lenses are designed for small sensors like iphone 7 or 8. First version was released in 2014-15 and this was renewed in 2017 if I remember correctly. Doesn’t make sense they still sell these old lenses.
Thanks for a very useful video. I'm using a iPhone 13 pro and have found that the Moment 18 and 58 really don't work all that well. The 1.33 anamorphic works pretty ok. I now don't bother with carrying the Moment lenses unless I want to use the anamorphic. Combined with the fiddly filter arrangement I'm rather disappointed with the Moment offerings.
Great review. Perhaps using each, especially the 18mm, in a vlog style video and see how the movement is effected by the larger sensor. I just did an outdoors vlog with the 18mm and it was warbled. The stills and non moving shots looked great. Once I stated walking the environment was wavy and shifting in a bad way. All this was done in the default camera app. Hope this helps.

Seems like it’s enough to have one single anamorphic lens to cover all “required” focal lengths for wide medium and close look. Generally it’s enough to make your b-roll look cinematic and natural, isn’t it?
Wow, ALL my Moment lenses worked fine for me on my 13 Pro (not Max); including the 58mm. So, not sure what you ran into. I won't be buying another iPhone, though, until it gets USB-C connectivity. Lightning connects just too slowly for all the data the phone can capture.
The 58mm worked on the 3x? I’ve never seen that with the 13. The other lenses did OK. It’s kind of hit or miss which is strange. But yes, the iPhone 15 Pro will be your next one! :)
Using image stabilization in the native camera app crops in on the full capture area. Since the anamorphic lens causes the stabilization to produce a jello effect while moving, you would really be shooting with a 3rd party app - stabilization turned off to avoid warpy footage. Please share some shots or observations with stabilization off. There are numerous folks posting vignetting issues occurring on the left and right edges of the frame, using the moment case.
Yeah, this was shot with a third-party app the CinemaP3 camera. When I’m shooting handheld I use stabilization. But on a tripod you can get away with it off. Haven’t used that one, so not sure. But seeing edges/vignettes is not uncommon especially if image stabilization is on as the image almost “floats”. So you could try turning that off. Also, you can reframe in editing by pushing in on the image to remove the vignette.
Hi! Does SmallRig on the new cages includes the option for 17mm lenses? Or only bayonet? I remember that previous models included two plates according with your model.
I have all three of those lenses and find 18mm and 58mm okay on my iPhone Pro Max, however there is terrible vignetting on the anamorphic lens that makes it unusable as it looks trashy, I am using a moment case 3D printed adaptor so not sure if there is an alignment issue. I don't understand why your images do not show vignetting with the anamorphic lens. Can you please give me your opinion why?
It’s probably what you said - the mount needs to be more precise and I’m using a cage and so that helps. The other thing is image stabilization can cause vignetting with anamorphic lenses. Typically I’ll turn it off, especially if on a tripod. And if I need to use it and then I’ll just re-frame in post production… Meaning pushing past the vignette.
So it works, just avoid the tele on tele 😮 so tele on tele works with the 11 pro max 12 pro max even the Xs max but not the 13 or 14 PM because it’s 3x lens is soft 😅

You might be able to find a third-party case or cage that would fit that and use them. Like the Beastgrip Pro. It’s universal, but can’t recall if they make a bayonet mount for it - they do for their cage, but that’s iPhone only. There’s probably a solution out there.

Yeah, that 3X Tele is problematic using any external lenses, but the 2X on the 14 Pro is pretty solid.
@@iphoneographers interesting 🤔
But the 2.5x on the 12 pro max was useable just very soft but not the 3x on the 13 pro max / 14PM
And xs max and 11 PM 2x is fine just not great in low light that’s so interesting
I was thinking of saving money by going with the 12PM OR 13PM
BUT
Looks like I’ll skip the 13PM AND maybe go straight to 14PM
Lots of planning but I love the tele anamorphic that seemed to do okay on the 3x lens?
Thanks for all these tests!!!
So basically I need to sell my moment lenses. Going to shift gears to Beastgrip. Their anamorphic lens looks amazing on iPhone 14 pro max
Beastgrip is making great stuff. 👍🏻
Does the anamorphic lens work with cinematic mode?
No it doesn’t. You can add filters though if you want to get flares… ruclips.net/video/jtMqkniRxhQ/видео.html
What prevents the anamorphic from working in cinematic mode? Is it the camera lens that’s used for cinematic vs what lenses the Moments work on?
How wide is the widest the ultra wide lens can go on the Iphone 14 (in cinematic)?
Standard wide which is 24mm, though it crops in some using Cinematic mode so it’s probably more like 26mm or so.
@@iphoneographers It would be great if cinematic mode would work on ultra wide too...
I have all moment lenses and I can't use it in my samsung ultra 22 cause moment did't make a case. My investmente is lost
You might be able to find a third-party case or cage that would fit that and use them. Like the Beastgrip Pro. It’s universal, but can’t recall if they make a bayonet mount for it - they do for their cage, but that’s iPhone only. There’s probably a solution out there.
Plenty of third party solutions
@@charliesaigon like wich one?
Have you tested this cage with moondog anamorphic?
No, but that’s on my to do list. But their bayonet mount should work no problem.
@@iphoneographers I had 13 pro max cage with moondog. No problems at all though. Just wondering if larger sensor changed anything.
Simple moment is not updating there lens, and are dying simply by not making the choice to Update there products.
❤
Beware, it degrades image quality
Are these lenses catered to content creators? I’m just your regular guy that uses their phone for pictures and video while traveling and do not see any differences whatsoever
Yeah, I would say for casual users the built-in lenses are fine. But if you’re doing anything, more professional, or want to have higher quality results, then adding a third-party lens onto the main camera can make a big difference, especially shooting in low light or if you want unique shots like using a wide angle or an anamorphic lens.
