Jeffrey Northrup death: “Relief” as Umar Zameer found not guilty in Toronto cop’s death

- A man accused of fatally running over a Toronto police officer sobbed with relief on Sunday after a jury found him not guilty in the officer’s death.
Umar Zameer and his family members burst into tears when the verdict was read out on the fourth day of jury deliberations. He had pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Det. Const. Jeffrey Northrup, who died on July 2, 2021 after he was hit by a vehicle in an underground parking garage at Toronto City Hall.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw was seen hugging Northrup’s widow after the verdict was announced.
Ontario Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy addressed Zameer briefly before exiting the courtroom, offering “my deepest apologies for what you’ve been through.”

Police corruption is real, and they are never held accountable. Ever. Shame.
With all of the gang shootings and car thefts going on in Toronto, it's not shocking to me that Zameer thought the plain clothed cops were criminals ambushing them to take their car and rob them, especially when these officers didn't identify themselves and got aggressive when Zameer locked his car doors, banging on his car, then blocking him in with an unmarked van, having his pregnant wife and kids with him, I would have done the same thing and got the hell out of there in fear for myself and whoever I were to have in the vehicle with me, the justice system in Canada when it comes to self defense, they always try to charge you with the highest crime, then make you fight for your life in court, we need better self defense laws. It's tragic that someone lost their life, but the officer screwed up, not all cops are bad, but the good ones have to set the example on how to police the country.
Agreed, plain clothes officers should never have been deployed. They botched it with their aggressive tactics. A marked car and uniformed officer should have been used. Toronto police need to take a lesson from Arkansas State Troopers in how to properly approach a vehicle.

These plain clothes police had no lawful reason to detain Zameer. And the way they went about it by running towards a parked car in an underground parking lot late at night and banging on he windows, would lead most of us to believe it was a violent carjacking. If the police had genuine reasons to question him regarding a stabbing at Nathan Phillips Square… a marked police car could have pulled him over as he exited the garage. Or they could have used the license plate information to interview him at a later time. Why did they believe this family in a BMW had anything to do with the stabbing in the first place? Surveillance cameras only showed them walking past the stabbing victim, but having no direct interaction.
Probably because of his skin colour.
Scary stuff.
Presumably wanted to interview him regarding what he saw?
I'm very sorry the officer died, it's tragic for his family.
The officers did show ID, however, if it had been me, I doubt I would know if ID was real or fake.
There are enough incidents of criminals claiming to be police, especially in plain clothes.

It's insane that Zameer was ever charged. The blame for Jeffrey Northrup's death is very clearly on Northrup himself and the other undercover police who were there that night. Their actions caused his death. If anyone should have been charged in Northrup's death, it's the other cops who were involved.
He would have been charged if he accidentally ran over civilians. It’s terrible this happened to him and the police are at fault. This man and his family will never be the same.
But zameer was the one who was driving car and used his car to hit a person because he was sacred ....in Canada laws stipulate citizens can't use lethal force that why it had to go to trial ...if an ordinary citizen defends himself from an intruder in Canada the kill intruder they still have to be charged its the law
@@databank5478 I see you didn't follow this case. Zameer didn't use his car to hit a person, he used his car to try to drive away from the people he thought were carjacking him. The video evidence proves that the cops lied about Northrup being standing with his arms out when he was hit: he was actually lying on the ground where it was impossible for Zameer to see him. Zameer didn't use lethal force. That requires intent. He wasn't trying to hurt anyone, he was trying to get away from his attackers. He never should have been charged.
@randalthor741 actually this has happened in Canada before ..where someone accidentally ran people over and yes they were charged....I do believe he was scared and didn't know he was a cop and used his car as a weapon...I probably would have done same but he did kill an innocent man as well this is a tricky case but in similar senerios in Canada people have been charged and found guilty of manslaughter ...in fact sometimes drivers accidentally hit pedestrians are usually always charged ....look it up

The crown being weak doesnt automatically give more credit to the defense. The judge was overzealous, i hope they claim mistrial
You know what's nice? When police, public officials own up to mistakes made. Instead of always sticking to the party line being sold.
I’m so sorry you had to go through all of that. The P.T.S.D you face is insurmountable. It’s just heartbreaking. I can’t wrap my head around it. God bless you and your family moving forward.
Poorly trained police on the prowl. Oh well there’s always next week
Sad, there's a dead person involved! John P.
Umar had his family in mind including his wife who was pregnant, and tried to get out of a sketchy parking lot getting approached by some guy, hell if I seen him whip something out of his pocket I’m not taking the time to clarify if it IS a gun or a badge, or a wallet, WHATEVER, not taking chances. Umar definitely seems shook up by all of this and I hope he’s okay. It’s tragic it played out the way it did but Umar seems like a rather kind man who just acted with his family in mind and it cost someone’s life. It’s tragic.
Doug Ford should be called out for declaring Umar as guilty before the court case had completed. What a horrible person he is
Ford never said any such thing...
@@mic01keeps on deleting the link. Google it there is a national post article from 2021
The Toronto Star:
Later, Zameer was subject to further scorn when he was granted bail in a rare decision for such a serious case. Premier Doug Ford said that ruling was “beyond comprehension” while then-Mayor John Tory said it was “almost impossible to imagine” why Zameer would be released.@@mic01
The real question is why these cops approached Mr Zameer in an aggressive fashion. Looks fishy, may be the deal with the real criminal busted and they may have lost them
It's just acting, they possess nothing..
Global News, that title is stupid!!
It was an accident
Accidents have consequences so no justice in this case.
@@emstirling-is4nu the blame for the "accident" is on the police.
@@emstirling-is4nu You are right. This gentleman should receive an apology from the chief and the officers that caused the death of one of them with the reckless maneuver and then lied in court should be fired immediately.
Complete injustice for the family & friends of this police officer. Shame on the jurors and the whole court system. A man still died and Zameer should be held accountable.
It was JEFF WHO WAS WRONG and his wife trying to put a inocent man behind bars PUT HER IN JAIL JEFFS WIFE😂 SHES A CRIMINAL
White guy? GUILTY!!!
Horrible accident . I blame stress . Without that, nothing would have transpired.Bad times we live in . Just my opinion .
The full quote from Defense lawyer is " Today is not a day for celebration, but today is a day for relief for Zameer family". Global News Headline writer needs to use the words as they mean in clear way.
