  • A man accused of fatally running over a Toronto police officer sobbed with relief on Sunday after a jury found him not guilty in the officer’s death.
Umar Zameer and his family members burst into tears when the verdict was read out on the fourth day of jury deliberations. He had pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Det. Const. Jeffrey Northrup, who died on July 2, 2021 after he was hit by a vehicle in an underground parking garage at Toronto City Hall.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw was seen hugging Northrup’s widow after the verdict was announced.
Ontario Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy addressed Zameer briefly before exiting the courtroom, offering “my deepest apologies for what you’ve been through.”

With all of the gang shootings and car thefts going on in Toronto, it's not shocking to me that Zameer thought the plain clothed cops were criminals ambushing them to take their car and rob them, especially when these officers didn't identify themselves and got aggressive when Zameer locked his car doors, banging on his car, then blocking him in with an unmarked van, having his pregnant wife and kids with him, I would have done the same thing and got the hell out of there in fear for myself and whoever I were to have in the vehicle with me, the justice system in Canada when it comes to self defense, they always try to charge you with the highest crime, then make you fight for your life in court, we need better self defense laws. It's tragic that someone lost their life, but the officer screwed up, not all cops are bad, but the good ones have to set the example on how to police the country.

These plain clothes police had no lawful reason to detain Zameer. And the way they went about it by running towards a parked car in an underground parking lot late at night and banging on he windows, would lead most of us to believe it was a violent carjacking. If the police had genuine reasons to question him regarding a stabbing at Nathan Phillips Square… a marked police car could have pulled him over as he exited the garage. Or they could have used the license plate information to interview him at a later time. Why did they believe this family in a BMW had anything to do with the stabbing in the first place? Keep in mind that the judge told the prosecutors in meetings without the jurors, that he did not believe they had enough evidence to prosecute and of course, the prosecutors kept changing their story. It's not so much whether or not he's guilty but of how bad the argument was. Retribution without a valid case is also not justice. I'm sure the police and the family would love to see someone suffer but they have to prove it was intentional for both first and second degree murder, maybe they should've tried for negligence. They needed to prove there wasn't a blind spot and that the driver could deyermine the man was a policeman and not a mugger and changing their story constantly didn't help. There's no doubt he drove over the policeman, the problem is the prosecutors placed charges where they had to prove that he intended to.

I could not understand why charges weren't withdrawn once the video came out and especially once the forensic testimony came out around where the officer was when struck... Perhaps they were mistaken in the heat of the moment, perhaps they created a scenario in their minds to feel better about the loss, perhaps they lied. The Toronto Star:
Later, Zameer was subject to further scorn when he was granted bail in a rare decision for such a serious case. Premier Doug Ford said that ruling was “beyond comprehension” while then-Mayor John Tory said it was “almost impossible to imagine” why Zameer would be released.@@mic01

The real question is why these cops approached Mr Zameer in an aggressive fashion. Looks fishy, may be the deal with the real criminal busted and they may have lost them

@@emstirling-is4nu You are right. This gentleman should receive an apology from the chief and the officers that caused the death of one of them with the reckless maneuver and then lied in court should be fired immediately.

Complete injustice for the family & friends of this police officer. Shame on the jurors and the whole court system. A man still died and Zameer should be held accountable.

The full quote from Defense lawyer is " Today is not a day for celebration, but today is a day for relief for Zameer family". Global News Headline writer needs to use the words as they mean in clear way.
