As an aircraft painter I used the Mirka pneumatic palm sanders along with their Abranet papers and I also use their sand papers for my auto body paint and repair hobby. Their Palm Sanders and sandpaper are excellent products and I love them both.

Great review. It really looks like Mirka is trying to bring some solutions to our sanding problems. I can definitely see the value. Even their abrasives seem innovative from what @eightquartercustoms said about using Mirka abrasives on a Bosch.
I wont disagree with you, the Mirka Deros is a wonderful machine, a pleasure to use and designed very thoughtfully. I work in a boat yard and my company decided to upgrade all of their air powered DA's to Mirka Deros. They purchased 3 units. Within a year, we had sent in our sanders atleast 4 times due to failure. It was the same issue every single time. Red blinking light and no power. Apparently its a pretty common event in production shops. Because of that experience, although it killed me to buy the festool, I couldnt justify the Mirka as an option. I hope they've fixed this problem.
Pretty much every RUclipsr who's used this machine has had the same issue.
Apparently the control board fries itself when the backing pad has slight wear. (Or at least that's the excuse for Mirka to deny warranty claims..).
Were they to fix this I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
Such a major flaw in a company's flagship product is sure to kill the brand, so we can only assume they want to/have fixed it.
But as they deny the problem exists, they can't put out a statement saying it is. And I just can't afford that gamble.
I was getting ready to order the Festool (really hate that brand!).
But recently there's a generic red Chinese sander going around getting some great reviews, beating the Mirka at every step. (It's also being sold in different colours, rebadged by a number of professional niche brands).
So I've ordered that. It might crap out after a few months, but at 150 bucks that's a gamble I am willing to take..

As a hobbyist, and not a wealthy one, I can't justify the price of either a Mirka or Festool sander, but I have been using the Abranet discs for awhile now and absolutely love them. They are not that much more expensive to buy if you get them from the right vendor, and they outlast every other disc I have tried, so I believe they are less expensive in the long run. good summary. any opinion about the new deos 3x5 sander's capabilities vs. the deros that you tested? at these prices i can only afford one system for all my sanding needs (painted surfaces, raw wood, fiberglass etc....) and many of my workflows will have corners that a round sander will not reach.
Yeah I like Mirka. Never used the whole system (looks awesome), but the discs are great. Mostly for flat sanding. Watch out out for edges, they tear easily.
being a user of both the rotex and Abranet i can tell you that its the Abranet being the better paper. i have to say i do love the Mirka easy use and size. also the numbness i get after using the rotex going up to 320 on large surfaces is an experience i try to avoid.

Im using deros fir about two years now and really like the sander ergonomics but im really having problems with swirl marks and im not sure what the cause is , but i have feeling that it is more scratched up than some cheaper sanders

Best sander! It doesn't make sanding enjoyable but it really helps. Works perfect with a regular shop vac/cyclone/auto switch too and also comes in precious plastic (sisstainer) just like Festool. I was quickly able to fetch $40 for mine. A lot of folks are really into P.P. no matter what color it is.
I'd have thought that with a username like Slow and Expensive you'd be right into using systainers :) So impractical and yet so many people would sleep in one if they could. *facepalm*

I own both Festool and Mirka and they are both amazing sanders. If you are really on a tight budget Bosch and Dewalt making good sanders as well for a tight budget quality tool.
Mirka make the Rolls Royce of sanders. They are just perfect in every sense.
I chose this over the Festool as well. Even though I have the Festool extractor the Mirka sander is definitely better. That said I really dislike the paddle switch as its too easy to accidentally turn the sander on while changing grits, and the Abranet paper rips very easily, which is annoying when you are sanding narrow stock.
I never had a Mirka sander but I have used a few Festools and the quality is really good. Of course I would expect that with either brand. They are both expensive high-end brands.
At $1200, I'd say you're right--it is expensive...but I'm guessing the Festool is in that price range, too. As a hobbiest, I'll be sticking with my $60 sander that makes my hand numb for a good 20 minutes after I use it. If it were something I did all the time, this system would make more sense. Looks like a beautiful machine.

Please let me know your opinion regarding 3M Cubriton 775L which is very strong promote here in Europe. Are you using 3M sand papers? Is Abranet more durable on wood?

Believe it or not, I won this unit ( earlier model ) on the Popular Woodworking 30 days of Christmas drawing three years ago. I would probably have never spent the money to buy it, but wow, what a machine. If you can afford it, it’s the “Fizz” as another You Tuber might say.
How is it holding up?
@@mihalylajko381 actually I did have to send it in for repair. The on/off switch broke. They fixed it under warranty and even expended the three year warranty to four years. It’s the best darn sander I have ever used. I would never spend that kind of money for a hobby , but I can see a professional getting their money’s worth easy.

Can you swap out the pads between 125 mm and 150 mm? Also what orbital scratch pattern was on the sander you used 2.5 mm or 5.0 mm? Nice video thanks for the review.
I am not sure about the pads but this sander was the 5mm orbit

Hey! Really cool new sander. I have a question though, if you are worried about some of the stuff you mentioned, why not get a drum sander or even a wide belt sander?
Either of those would be a welcome addition to my shop. Space is the biggest issue. Even if I made them mobile, dust collection is an issue since you can't rub either of those without adequate DC. Plus I don't think I could run a shop without a good RO sander even if I had a drum or wide belt
Wonder how it would perform on end grain butcher block. I have a Bosch ROS 6" that I have been using Abranet on and it's pretty amazing but, this looks far superior. How would you rate the actual dust removal?

im a wood floor renovator, we use bona abrasives on every machine we have. have you ever tried them?
we dont use the festool abrasive cuz the quality is bad vs the bona
we have 120 grit polishing net abrasive with diamonds in them. they are 10 euro a piece

I also use mirka and its nice but i start recently using mesh sand papers from wurth wood group and they are half price of mirka and will not tear as easy as mirka , would recommend it !!
Thats interesting. I use them for my higher grade cabinet plywoods. I was unaware they made a net paper. Ill check them out.

You need to try the new 3M Cubitron 2 sandpaper - all 3 styles, Net, Pattern and solid back with the Mirka...

what is the cost comparison between this and the Festool?
For the sanders alone the Festool is around $500 and the Mirka is around $600
I know after a few hours of using the Rotex or ETS may hands ache for a day . How does this sander compare ?
This is seriously the most smooth feeling sander I've ever used. It's, dare I say, almost enjoyable to use.
Your hands ache with ETS? I sand several hours at a time and love the way the ETS feels. The rotex is a different story, but also a completely different animal.
@@JLP2224 yeah repetitive motions like hand sanding, chisel work and even machine sanding . It sucks when your old.
Now Paul is being spammed with a hundred emails asking how to get a free sander lol. I've loved the Mirka paper for a long time, and will be looking into the Deros next year after the shop is fully set up in the new house.
Having used a Festool Rotex, I will say this is very appealing, however I still am unsure as to whether or not it would actually keep up with a Rotex; however I'd probably be willing to potentially sacrifice some power for the far superior ergonomics of the Deros. I will say I have to disagree on the matter of this being "the best setup", since Festool makes the best dust extractors in the industry and nobody really would argue against that; so I'd say the best setup would be the Mirka Deros and a Festool dust extractor in the size that best fits your needs. I'm wondering what you and others have to say on that, but these were just my notes and opinions.
Thanks for the video. Would you chose the 2.5mm orbital or 5mm for smaller/medium tables? Any significant benefit for swirl marks?

You should compare with FEATOOL ETC EC but u choose rotex 90 for dramatised :))) i bet you’ve thought even on rotex 150 at the beginning :)))

I paid $600 for my Mirka DEROS 6-inch, and it was worth EVERY PENNY. Love that thing.

I love the Mirka, but you can’t compare the Mirka Deros to the Festool Rotex. They are completely different sanders. Like you mention in the video, comparing the Deros to the Festool ETS would make a whole lot more sense. When you’re getting into heavy removal of old finishes the Rotex is the way to go. Maybe that’s not what you need a sander for, but both serve their purposes well. Again, I love the mirka, but love my Rotex as well.
The link to the other video compares the Deros to the ETS and the Deros still gave better results.

@@wmwalkerco I have no idea as Im in Great Britain but someone said that mirka deros and metabo sxe150 is the same sander just rebranded. But nowone compare them. Just want to see them together to check is that true or not. On pictures they looks same but there's no videos with both of them nowwhere. Wanna know as Metabo is £100 cheaper so that's would be huge saving. Thanks anyway. Great video.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that model isn't available in the US. Hitachi and Metabo just had a merger not too long ago. I'm interested to see if they bring it in to the US market. The Deros is by far the absolute best sander I've ever used. I'm sure the Metabo is great too, I just don't have access to one.
Mirka doesn't seem to sell the exact version in this video in the US. The US version doesn't have the weight adjustment screws under the pad.
I'll have to check with my people but mine came from the US offices. Not sure why yours doesn't
Mine has a US 110v plug on the end.
I just checked the Mirka USA website and looked at the exploded view of the 5" 5mm Deros and it includes the balancing screws
looks like the 6" U.S. version does not include balancing screws... you are correct that the 5" does.
This isn't a like for like comparison I'm sorry. The Festool that is comparable to the Mirka Deros is the ETS EC 150/5. Both great sanders, we chose the Festool as they have a very large range of sanders that allow compatibility between tools (vac hose connections, leads etc). Can't go wrong with the Deros though and you can get a 125 pad for it too which the Festool doesn't have. Abranet paper great for flat surfaces but rips on edges so we don't use it anymore. The 80 and 40 grit come in an HD which isn't mesh and is very strong, and pricey. No better than Festool's Granat though in our experience. Festool goes down to 24 grit too which we use in extreme situations.
I referred to a like for like comparison video that already did an in depth comparison to the ETS. I did this video because Festool claims their Rotex is for rough and finish sanding which I have not found to be the case. I've used an ETS and prefer the Deros. I have found the Abranet can rip easily if there is anything to catch on. I find it interesting that both Festool and Mirka hoses fit on both brands of sanders

Yes we bought two in 2018 and the both had speed control issues ,both fixed under warranty .. while the mirka is a fine tool, unfortunately it's fragile in my experience.

The Deros is a very capable machine. The only weakness I've exposed through fairly light and careful use of mine is the power cable where it enters the machine. The fact that your one shown here features a hose clamp to provide futher strain relief to the connection is a good sign in terms of Mirka's continuous development. They aren't just giving it the Apple "we know it's shit, it's always been shit but you mugs will keep buying it anyway" attitude.
They missed a trick with this, should of had an auto plug thingy bob like most hoovers got where you push a button and it sucks the plug up into the machine another thing could of easily had fold up/down pull bars it’s a heavy machine and hurts ya back pulling it around allday making it so tempting to pull along using the sander itself which can snap the hose
RE: cubitron discs. "A" weight backer too flimsy. Abranet backer is a "C" weight or better. Abranet discs make excellent hand sanders upon being worn. cubitron wont shed very well

Great video, but… The Mirka sales person link is almost useless - or certainly not reasonably prompt. While the phone number worked and I presume the email address was accurate, I never received any response with either contact method. Sorry Wm Walker, but it appears your endorsement does not carry much clout with Mirka anymore. Bottom line, getting a half-way prompt reply / response appears impossible; I waited a full week for a response. In the end, I just went to Infinity Tools and got about as good a deal as is available, way more flexible than anyone on eBay (particularly relative to options & accessories available). With Infinity, or, likely, any other vendor, at least there is a customer service number to call. If the Mirka response is any indicator, I am unimpressed with them as a source of support.
what's the point of comparing these two sanders? even in RO mode it makes no sense, the festool spins at like less than half the speed of the mirka, so of course it isn't going to be as quick in random orbit mode. who's using a rotex in random orbit mode? compare it with the ets ec from festool. I cant imagine who this review would be helpful to.
it's almost like Bosch and festool had a love child.

My issue with trusting reviews like this is when I hear, the tool were sent to me by so and so. How can we the viewers know we’re getting a honest and unbiased review? I know people always claim that they are giving their honest opinions not influenced by the fact that they got the tool for free, but IMO that’s just BS.
This is a very biased comparison. You should be comparing this with the Festool ETC EC 150/5 not the Rotex. As for the sandpaper, why didn’t you compare it with the Festool Granat Net?
I believe I linked to a direct comparison to the ETS from another craftsperson who did a thorough review and tests of both which would make my review redundant.
Mirka shot itself in the foot, as the CEROS was MUCH better.
I can't imagine what I could want more in a sander. In your opinion what made the CEROS much better. I never had the chance to use one so I'm truly curious.

Soooooo many misleading biased comments in 7 minutes.
1.Comparing Abranet to Rubin2 is exactly like comparing an apple to an orange. Completely different abrasives for completely different applications.
2.Why not compare the Deros to Festools' ETS EC 125 with the same orbital stroke (John Stein neglected to use the same stroke as well)?
3. Comparing the "crunchy and gratey" sound of Festool Rubin 2 designed for bare, rough wood to Mirka Abranets' "pleasant dull sound" (what does that mean?) designed for fine finish sanding is misleading and dishonest. A comparison with Mirka Abranet and Festool Granat would be a head on (honest) comparison with different results. I would be interested in seeing your objective "comparison" of an ax vs. a circular saw, provided the ax manufacturer doesn't provide you with free tools. We know what your results would be......…
4. Mirka does not manufacture their own dust extractor; Festool does.
5. This was not an unbiased, objective comparison of 2 comparable tools. This was a paid endorsement by a manufacturer with predetermined results.
So much so that I gave my Festool away? I have read so many other reviews of people getting curly cues with ETS. The fact is. I love using the Mirka Deros and Festool DOES market the rotex as a rough and finish sander which it just isn't. All I care about are the results and user experience. If you thought I wouldn't get comments like this from Festool fanboys you're wrong.
First off, Mirka makes a great tool. This test went "South" in the hands of a paid spokesman/ amateur. You lack a fundamental knowledge of sanders:
1. All Random orbital sanders (regardless of brand) were never designed for "rapid stock removal." They are (in the hands of craftsmen) finish sanders. In regards to rapid stock removal, the Festool RO 125 in "Rotex" or aggressive mode will shame ANY RO sander, even Festool's own RO sanders. Remember the apple and the orange?
2. RO sanders have different orbit strokes- 2, 3 and 5 mm and more. Your "comparison" or staged ruse used a 2.5 mm stroke on the Deros and a 3.6 mm on the Rotex. If you want an objective test, use the Mirka Deros 5mm RO and the Festool ETS EC 125 5mm both using the same sandpaper.
3. The Festool RO 125 does not "balance" (per your staged example), as it was designed for dual use in finish and aggressive mode (you knew it was a dual purpose sander right?). The Festool ETS EC 125 and Mirka Deros both have excellent balance.
Maybe play some southern rock in the background on the next comparison...…….

And for the record this Deros is a 5mm stroke i.e. wider orbit than the rotex and removes stock faster and more enjoyably than the rotex with aggressive grit and still finishes finer. I was not paid for this review. I've been in the trades since I was 12, working on the jobsite for my dad, then went on to art school. I'm far from an amateur. I now work on high end commissions and have been published in multiple publications. Popular Woodworking being one of them. I've used the Festool ETS and have talked to a lot of people who have made the switch. Dont assume I'm just some rube that doesnt know what hes talking about.
