If we're going by the screen metaphor, I think swansea trashing the entire screen says something. By then, he knew of Anya and Jimmy. Swansea basically saw this "dead pixel" of a rapist and crashed the entire screen in response. Makes sense considering once Daisuke and Anya die he immediately goes after Jimmy out of rage.
Agreed. The worst part is that it's technically not Curly's fault. It's not his fault he can't sense emotions that are being deliberately concealed from him. It's not his fault he can't read between the lines and isn't as emotionally intelligent as other people. He couldn't help not being more observant, those flaws are human and some people just have them, wether they like it or not. But he was the captain. He was their friend, and it was his responsibility to notice that something was going on. And he was held accountable for not seeing it, by the story, by the characters and by himself. It was all his fault, but paradoxically he genuinely couldn't have prevented it with how everything has played out. A little scary how responsibility works.

Also highly doubt he could get through the vents as easily as he imagines. Also doesn't appear that Swansea was even tied up on the chair. If Swansea was going to kill Jimmy I think he would have done it immediately after Daisuke.

There's a lock on the medical room to keep people out from the medications - people can be tempted to imbibe in pain-killers or whatever else for reasons that aren't evil. There's a lock on the cockpit because, well - the same reason why there's a gun for the captain. If the greater collective decided that they weren't happy with the captain, it's imperative that there be a lock on the cockpit so the captain can - at worst - ensure they get to their destination. This could either be from a place of (unknowing) selfishness, he's concerned with his own safety or sees why there could be a reason to worry about it, or just knowing of past experiences where such a thing has happened. None of us need to question why the cockpit on planes lock, after all. But why no lock on the bedrooms? Well, what if someone locked themselves in their room and hurt themselves? What if someone went to bed, locked their door, and passed in their sleep? Or worse, needed help after an accident and couldn't get it because they locked the door? There's so many reasons why you might need to get into a locked persons bedroom. Curly doesn't think about the many reasons why someone might *want* to get into a locked persons bedroom with bad or evil intentions - because he doesn't believe it to be possible, in his mind. He is too naive for the good of his crew - to the chagrin of Anya.
@ASHU-Asher I agree that he’s no child, and he has to “TAKE RESPONSIBILITY” - but in no way are the events of the story Curly’s fault. I dislike the narrative that Curly is just as responsible as Jimmy because of his reaction to Anya’s confession of what happened. That’s not to say what he did was good or even fine, it was - as we can tell because of the events of the game - the wrong way to handle the situation… But he could not have known the effects of it.

It's even more ironic than that. Having a lock on the med bay prevented the crew from saving Anya. Instead of preventing drug abuse it ensured she could do it without interruption. The cockpit wasn't locked when it should haven been which allowed Jimmy to override the controls thus leading to Curly's injuries.
The moral of this story is that some people don’t deserve a second chance. It’s not your responsibility to “fix” this person if said person takes no effort in fixing himself.
True... still based on the working conditions they are in, the consequences when the company knows will be catastrophic even anya would force to consider. In short, everyone is in a way a victim to the company's negligence.

Curly tried so hard to be a good captain by letting Jimmy slide to prevent conflict but by not doing anything, he let a monster run rampant within the ship and Curly himself ended up as a bad captain.

I know people sometimes point to this scene and say that Curly blew Anya off on purpose and pretended he noticed nothing. But I actually really like the delivery here. He's just genuinely being an oblivious dumbass, only for the reality to hit him later on after the worst has already happened. Also huge props to the VAs, they did a great job on this scene.

This was an unplanned, chance encounter. He has no prior context to Anya's dilemma. The conversation started out chill and friendly. Curly would have to be a mind reader, or a hyper-microanalyzer partial to tragic undertones to gleam that Anya is hinting at her SA. And why would he do that for a casual nighttime conversation? He's not picking up hints because he's not on the lookout for them. And there are also people calling him dismissive? For one once again, no context; so it isn't even intentional ignorance. And two, if we're still looking at the dead pixel literally (which Curly is) Curly took Anya seriously, gave it a solid good look, quit because he couldn't find it, but said he'd go nuts continuing to look for it, then signed it off playfully, because once again Curly thinks we're literally talking about a singular black 1x1 dot on a giant fucking screen with a "bigger picture" of a still functioning, beautiful night sky. Hey! Here's an experiment we can all do: the next casual conversation you have with someone, aggressively look for signs that might be a call for help. Now, some of you might be wondering, "Why would I do that? I don't know them like that." Congratulations, you are now in Curly's shoes. you know what? i also think that the bedrooms are unlocked for safety reasons. those bedrooms are small with no windows since they're in space. anything happening in there would instantly become a fire hazard. plus, easy retrieval if anything happened to a crew member. the company is too stingy to comply with fire hazard regulations otherwise.
That's the whole point of the story, Curly didn't INTENTIONALLY let Jimmy fuck everything up, but his lack of action allowed him to do so. Way more terrifying than bad man let's other bad man do bad things and it backfires on the first bad man. Curly was just a man, and his simple mistake of inaction caused him, (and everyone) everything.
It's amazing how people reduce Curly as "100% innocent" or "100% evil" when the truth is that the character is simply realistic and well written. His main problem is how his empathy is directed towards all the characters including his friend, Jimmy. He was the captain, he wanted everyone to be in a good mood and satisfy both parties, and in his mind the best way to do that was to ignore the bad and avoid confrontation at all costs. Yes, he was a bad captain for trying to give Jimmy a second chance (we all want to believe that horrible people, and especially those close to us, can change) and for not properly handling the Anya situation. But does that make him a bad person? Honestly, in my opinion, no. He's not good and he's not bad, but that doesn't mean he's responsible for Jimmy's actions, every decision he made was with a positive intention, and that's what led to his downfall.

He’s kind but he’s kind to a fault. An incredibly dangerous fault in the end. He’s that one teacher who won’t step in and do something about the kid who’s bullying another student, because he’s aware the bully had had it hard too. So he feels bad stepping in and having them removed from the classroom or having some sort of action in place because he doesn’t want everyone to be hurt. Does that make him cruel or make him deserve to have anything bad happen to them? Of course not. Deep down you might even like that teacher because they’ve always just been really nice to you. But as nice as they are, god damn are they so useless in situations like this. That’s the kind of person Curly is

I may be wrong, but from what I've been told, real cargo ships genuinely don't have locks on the crew sleeping quarters. Large, long-haul shipping vessels are constructed with the expectation of potential failures. In case of an emergency such as a hull breach or fire, the most likely places for the crew to be in need to remain unlocked. In general, it's far more likely that a fire could start while the crew are sleeping, and locked metal doors are more susceptible to becoming damaged shut in case of a fire than unlocked ones, for instance. What needed to have been accounted for that wasn't was the inherent risks associated with having a mixed-sex crew on an isolated ship that were expected to work together for over a year at a time. There should have been emergency contraceptives and a brig on a tulpar.
Curly makes me so sad because he takes responsibility in the end in the most cosmic and uncontrollable way. He can't save anyone, and he can't do anything to help them. He just has to watch and know, which is what caused this to happen.

The way she cuts Curly off: “8 months”. She’s a nurse, she’s smart, she did the math, and the numbers crushed her soul. The voice acting is incredible.

There's such a genuine warmth when Anya says, "in the back of my mind, it's always there", and I just hngh- Like she really genuinely was only thinking of the dead pixel at that moment, and she's here with her friend Curly, talking about something inconsequential....until her tone changes, and she isn't.

The true impact of this scene did not hit me until much later in the game and replaying it made everything about 100000% more intense. This game was phenomenal

Amazing job realising this scene. You did such a great job capturing this tender moment, this glimpse into a tiny shred of normalcy and humanity the crew might have had, that’s over all too soon. The dialogue in-game isn’t voiced. It’s up to the player to imagine how those lines are delivered; and I really love your interpretation.
When she asked about the pixel Curly looks for a FEW SECONDS and finds no effort whatsoever to find it. This is an example of how he sees Jizzzapointment. “Maybe I’m just used to looking at the bigger picture” Curly's body was also an example on how Jimmy saw her and treated her mentally.
The pixel is super important. Curly always looks at the bigger picture, meaning that he cares more for peace than anything. He didn’t complete his duty as a captain and didn’t care for his crew other than Jimmy. Which led him to die for Jimmy and remain the bad guy in other’s eyes as an attempt to keep the peace instead of simply taking action to give Jimmy the consequences he deserved. Anya, on the other hand, went through traumatic ordeals and watched out for every single mistake she made or little things she overthinked about. Which lead her to her death.

@ASHU-Asher I agree that he’s no child, and he has to “TAKE RESPONSIBILITY” - but in no way are the events of the story Curly’s fault. I dislike the narrative that Curly is just as responsible as Jimmy because of his reaction to Anya’s confession of what happened.
That’s not to say what he did was good or even fine, it was - as we can tell because of the events of the game - the wrong way to handle the situation… But he could not have known the effects of it.

It's even more ironic than that. Having a lock on the med bay prevented the crew from saving Anya. Instead of preventing drug abuse it ensured she could do it without interruption. The cockpit wasn't locked when it should haven been which allowed Jimmy to override the controls thus leading to Curly's injuries.
Curly is so clueless it can feel frustrating. It makes you feel even worse when he doesn't get the message Anya was hinting at.
The moral of this story is that some people don’t deserve a second chance. It’s not your responsibility to “fix” this person if said person takes no effort in fixing himself.
True... still based on the working conditions they are in, the consequences when the company knows will be catastrophic even anya would force to consider. In short, everyone is in a way a victim to the company's negligence.

Curly tried so hard to be a good captain by letting Jimmy slide to prevent conflict but by not doing anything, he let a monster run rampant within the ship and Curly himself ended up as a bad captain.

I know people sometimes point to this scene and say that Curly blew Anya off on purpose and pretended he noticed nothing. But I actually really like the delivery here. He's just genuinely being an oblivious dumbass, only for the reality to hit him later on after the worst has already happened.
Also huge props to the VAs, they did a great job on this scene.
Thank you! Sad to see that some people cannot POSSIBLY fathom that Curly took the whole convo literally and at face value. Y'know... Like a normal human being? This was an unplanned, chance encounter. He has no prior context to Anya's dilemma. The conversation started out chill and friendly. Curly would have to be a mind reader, or a hyper-microanalyzer partial to tragic undertones to gleam that Anya is hinting at her SA. And why would he do that for a casual nighttime conversation? He's not picking up hints because he's not on the lookout for them.
And there are also people calling him dismissive? For one once again, no context; so it isn't even intentional ignorance. And two, if we're still looking at the dead pixel literally (which Curly is) Curly took Anya seriously, gave it a solid good look, quit because he couldn't find it, but said he'd go nuts continuing to look for it, then signed it off playfully, because once again Curly thinks we're literally talking about a singular black 1x1 dot on a giant fucking screen with a "bigger picture" of a still functioning, beautiful night sky.

you know what? i also think that the bedrooms are unlocked for safety reasons. those bedrooms are small with no windows since they're in space. anything happening in there would instantly become a fire hazard. plus, easy retrieval if anything happened to a crew member. the company is too stingy to comply with fire hazard regulations otherwise.
That's the whole point of the story, Curly didn't INTENTIONALLY let Jimmy fuck everything up, but his lack of action allowed him to do so. Way more terrifying than bad man let's other bad man do bad things and it backfires on the first bad man.
Curly was just a man, and his simple mistake of inaction caused him, (and everyone) everything.

It's amazing how people reduce Curly as "100% innocent" or "100% evil" when the truth is that the character is simply realistic and well written. His main problem is how his empathy is directed towards all the characters including his friend, Jimmy. He was the captain, he wanted everyone to be in a good mood and satisfy both parties, and in his mind the best way to do that was to ignore the bad and avoid confrontation at all costs.
Yes, he was a bad captain for trying to give Jimmy a second chance (we all want to believe that horrible people, and especially those close to us, can change) and for not properly handling the Anya situation.
But does that make him a bad person?
Honestly, in my opinion, no. He's not good and he's not bad, but that doesn't mean he's responsible for Jimmy's actions, every decision he made was with a positive intention, and that's what led to his downfall.
he was so good he ended up being bad. so obsessively trying to keep everything together he was actively ignoring the problem, knowing that adressing it would cause further distress, especially with his friend Jimmy, who I think he was partially in denial about what he did.
He’s kind but he’s kind to a fault. An incredibly dangerous fault in the end.
He’s that one teacher who won’t step in and do something about the kid who’s bullying another student, because he’s aware the bully had had it hard too. So he feels bad stepping in and having them removed from the classroom or having some sort of action in place because he doesn’t want everyone to be hurt. Does that make him cruel or make him deserve to have anything bad happen to them? Of course not. Deep down you might even like that teacher because they’ve always just been really nice to you. But as nice as they are, god damn are they so useless in situations like this.
That’s the kind of person Curly is

I may be wrong, but from what I've been told, real cargo ships genuinely don't have locks on the crew sleeping quarters.
Large, long-haul shipping vessels are constructed with the expectation of potential failures. In case of an emergency such as a hull breach or fire, the most likely places for the crew to be in need to remain unlocked. In general, it's far more likely that a fire could start while the crew are sleeping, and locked metal doors are more susceptible to becoming damaged shut in case of a fire than unlocked ones, for instance.
What needed to have been accounted for that wasn't was the inherent risks associated with having a mixed-sex crew on an isolated ship that were expected to work together for over a year at a time. There should have been emergency contraceptives and a brig on a tulpar.
Curly makes me so sad because he takes responsibility in the end in the most cosmic and uncontrollable way. He can't save anyone, and he can't do anything to help them. He just has to watch and know, which is what caused this to happen.
He ignored the dead pixel, until it covered the whole screen.

He was a good man who didnt realize you need to establish boundaries, that without them you can be terribly unkind to everyone else and himself by being kind to the sort of person who doesnt deserve it, who would manipulate and use that kindness against them. Especially when said person crosses a line.

There's a reason why you can't joke about bringing a bomb on board at an airport. That kind of thing has consequences to big to treat as a joke. He should've at least held Jimmy somewhere after that crashing nonsense. Curly was more than a poor manipulated bystander, my guy was an enabler. He essentially saw the manifesto of a school shooter and allowed the students to still attend the next day without alerting the police.

The true impact of this scene did not hit me until much later in the game and replaying it made everything about 100000% more intense. This game was phenomenal

When she asked about the pixel Curly looks for a FEW SECONDS and finds no effort whatsoever to find it. This is an example of how he sees Jizzzapointment. “Maybe I’m just used to looking at the bigger picture” Curly's body was also an example on how Jimmy saw her and treated her mentally.
mixing a man like curly with a voice actor like gianni creates a concoction that hits harder than that mouthwash cocktail that Swansea drank.

The pixel is super important. Curly always looks at the bigger picture, meaning that he cares more for peace than anything. He didn’t complete his duty as a captain and didn’t care for his crew other than Jimmy. Which led him to die for Jimmy and remain the bad guy in other’s eyes as an attempt to keep the peace instead of simply taking action to give Jimmy the consequences he deserved. Anya, on the other hand, went through traumatic ordeals and watched out for every single mistake she made or little things she overthinked about. Which lead her to her death.
