This night my dear, 99 year old grandmother passed away peacefully after a long time of lying in her deathbed. In the hour of her death, my wife suddenly woke up in her bed and heard the melody of this song quite clearly. (We are living in Germany, so we are not familiar with "Ding Dong" and we found out on youtube, which one it was but now) Anyway, I can absolutely comprehend that they popped the corks and celebrated her arrival in heaven.
News has come through that Sir Stephen Cleobury - the conductor - has passed on. My very best to his friends and family. Thank you hugely Sir for providing us with the wonderful Music every Christmas Eve, and indeed throughout the year.
Lyrics: Ding dong merrily on high, In heav'n the bells are ringing: Ding dong! verily the sky Is riv'n with angel singing Gloria Hosanna in excelsis! Gloria Hosanna in excelsis! E'en so here below, below, Let steeple bells be swungen, And "Io, io, io!" By priest and people sungen Gloria Hosanna in excelsis! Gloria Hosanna in excelsis! Pray you, dutifully prime Your matin chime, ye ringers, May you beautifully rhyme Your eve'time song, ye singers Gloria Hosanna in excelsis! Gloria Hosanna in excelsis! Gloria Hosanna in excelsis! Gloria Hosanna in excelsis! Hosanna in excelsis!!!
In my not terribly humble opinion, this is by far the best arrangement of this beautiful carol. The fun harmonies in the second verse, the brilliant organ and the little coda at the end are without equal.
I remember when I used to sing this in primary school and I loved it. I still envy the children at King's choir because they get to sing it with the full S.A.T.B. choir and the beautiful accompaniment of the church organ.
I have loved this beautiful, classic, cheerful Christmas carol since I was 3! I was born in 1978. This is beautifully, excellently, and exquisitely performed and presented by the 2010 King's College Cambridge Choir! Thank you for posting and sharing! I love the beautiful harmonies, the brilliant playing of the organ and the perfect coda at the end!
I remember singing this is choir at some point in my school years. For whatever reason, I started singing it today (I guess I’m in a good mood?) and I had to find it on RUclips! What a beautiful song! Long live good music!
World's best choir, IMHO, and that is one dynamite organist, too! If you ever have the good fortune to find yourself in Cambridge, England, go see the Chapel at King's College, where this choir sings and where this video was recorded. It's quite an impressive example of Perpendicular Gothic architecture, built 1446 to 1515. The painting at the back of the altar is "The Adoration of the Magi" painted by Peter Paul Rubens in 1634. The huge stained glass windows are magnificent and the ratio of glass to stone is amazing -- lots of glass and relatively little stone -- and the fan-vaulted ceiling is also quite something to see 80 feet above the floor on which you're standing when you look up.
ToddSF 94109 Yeah! World's best choir. Although Sir David's arrangement of this carol is the only arrangement I like. But Stephen is my second favorite English choir director after the late Sir David Willcocks. My favorite choir directors and organists period, worldwide, are the late Sir David Willcocks, Ellen Johnston, (local in my area), Stephen Cleobury, and Scott Hayes (also local).
Hard to believe this is Stephen Cleobury's last Christmas at Kings. What a talent. There just HAS to Knighthood on his retirement for someone who has given so much to choral music over the years.
For any of you interested BBC Radio 2's ''Nigel Ogden: The Organist Entertains' have done a King's special. Includes interview with Cleobury about the Harris organ and how he puts the carol festival together. Senior organ scholar Ben-San Lau also talks a bit about this challenging arrangement of Ding Dong Merrily and how in places the melody is played on pedals. Only on BBC I-player until 27/12/2011. Seasons Greetings and Peace to you all wherever you are.
That is a lovely arrangement! I’ve sung other arrangements of that carol, such as the one in Carols for Choirs, but this one is quite special. Thank you, Kings!
The first time I heard this was in the " littlest angel movie" from family entertainment. Excellent movie and magnificent christmas carol! So wonderful to hear this again. 😊
Love the arrangement. Choir superb. Cleobury really is at the top of his game. Also great to watch and hear a flawless performance by Ben-San Lau on organ. He makes it look so easy even though it isn't. Well done all.
From an old ex-Cathedral chorister I can assure you that smiling can be done when you have completed your rendition. Our DOM would say that we could not pronounce any vowels if our lips were stretched......
♥†♥ Tis the season to conjure such songs & as an ex choir boy, (but not of this parish) this was a fav. Hosanna Excelsis ! : Glory To God In The Highest ! ♥†♥
This song sounds nice like those traditional church choir carols I am trying to sing this and wonder how they could have so much breath to sing the gloria part since it's so long
Top of the league is Chelsea! Bwahwehtaoahlfdgh! (Diego Costa Singing!) Now, seriously, what a great carol, I didn't know it and I loved it! That arrangement is beautiful! Congrats!
Great version! I have put together a playlist of traditional Christmas favorites, mixing pop tunes old and new with traditional carols, classical and jazz: A Ducks Christmas (-:
Ding dong! merrily on high In heaven the bells are ringing Ding dong! verily the sky Is riven with angels singing Gloria, hosanna in excelsis Gloria, hosanna in excelsis E' en so here below below Let steeple bells be swungen And io, io, io By priest and people sungen Gloria, hosanna in excelsis Gloria, hosanna in excelsis Pray you dutifully prime Your matin chime ye ringers May you beautifully rime Your eve time song ye singers Gloria, hosanna in excelsis Gloria, hosanna in excelsis
Hosanna doesn't mean God. "Gloria in excelsis Deo" is "Glory to God in the highest," (or more literally Glory in the highest to God.) Hosanna, which is almost untranslatable, has a rather complicated meaning - starting with the meaning "save" or "rescue," but also as praise for the one saving (the wiki article is fascinating!) So a closer meaning for the refrain would be "Glory, praise in the highest," or perhaps "Glory, salvation in the highest."
Still stunning after nearly 3 years. Outstanding performance from Ben-San Lau on organ, Stephen Cleobury on the podium and the whole choir. Sounds spectacular on the King's 'Nine Lessons & Carols CD' released in 2012. The audio captured by Arne Akselberg, Grammy Award winning classical Engineer gave me chills when I first heard it. The closest thing to being there ever. Thanks again spiritdei. Looking forward to the 2013 uploads. A peaceful Christmas to everyone.
Wow! That is my favourite performance of Ding-Dong Merrily on High. I love the upward 16th note patterns in the right hand, and the solo trumpet played by the feet, a real feat of virtuosity. I would like to obtain a D.V.D. of this performance to purchase for enjoyment down through the years.
Found this in 2010 and I come back every Christmas season to listen to it
Back again

me too.
currently listening now.

Hi👋
The organist is bloody good!
The organist is Douglas Tang
Yes, excellent and I know some very good ones and play (badly) myself. I've turned the pages in this one fairly often and even that is pretty full on.
@@xtrahandz Actually the organist is Ben-San Lau.
@@xtrahandz Douglas Tang was much later (2012 - 2015)
@@romainbornes22 Sorry you are correct and I was wrong.
Beautiful music. Love the everything especially the organ sound. The only complaint I have is that the song is too short.

GLORIOUS!!! God bless your grandmother, your wife, and you. Thank you sharing that beautiful experience! Love to you from Ginny in San Diego, Ca.
How wonderful. May she rest in peace.
That's amazing! Thanks for sharing your experience and may your grandma's soul rest in peace
Christian Günther There's a right Royal party in Heaven when a sinner repents-imagine the joy when a saved soul enters Heaven?!

The coda was a step too far in my opinion...Unnecessary and convoluted. The rest? Par Excellence! ❤
sang this in choir one year in high school. still probably one of my favorite pieces. i get the “gloria” part stuck in my head from time to time.
I remember when I used to sing this in primary school and I loved it. I still envy the children at King's choir because they get to sing it with the full S.A.T.B. choir and the beautiful accompaniment of the church organ.

Perfection by the choir and the very best organist to ever play in Kings.
All those beautiful young faces and glorious voices!! Thank you, spiritdel, for this great treat!!!!!
You're very welcome Ginny Lorenz
KUDOS to the organist!
Stunning arrangement. Stunning music making for the gloriification of God. Stunning!
I’m ready for Christmas
So glad it's Christmastime again so I can listen to one of my favourite carols!
Again at Xmas 2019 I'm happy for my lovely Christmas tunes!
That organist is just rockin'! I'm amazed by his performance

Ganz hervorragend! Der Chor des King´s College ist wirklich eine Freude. Vielen Dank! Thank you!
I swear anything that mack wilberg creates just has a little bit of magic to it.
I love the final deep note of the pipe organ! Very well done arrengement

The bells chiming in the organ is so well done..
Why aren't the boys SMILING??!!?? One of the most FUN Carols...
It might be because whenever you smile you start to make a sort of "Ee" sound which isn't a good thing in choir unless you need that sound
You don't smile when singing (if possible)
Craig K It affects pronunciation.
From an old ex-Cathedral chorister I can assure you that smiling can be done when you have completed your rendition. Our DOM would say that we could not pronounce any vowels if our lips were stretched......

Another great hymn / Carol from this fantastic Choir. Great Organ work also.
Brilliant and lovely singing!!
This is like before and after puberty with the boys singing vs the men
I’m singing this song for my choir concert that is in 2 weeks!! Holiday concert, I’m in woman’s choir and Voce 🙃
The best, most mellifluous choir in the world!

Utterly brilliant, wonderful music! God Bless King's College!
This song sounds nice like those traditional church choir carols
I am trying to sing this and wonder how they could have so much breath to sing the gloria part since it's so long
It''s all about training, and knowing how to breath deeply enough to do it. Keep practicing!
Gabrielle Blais-Jones Oh okay
So I need to prepare to breath a deep breath first
marisa liu yeah, a quick one right before and right after each Gloria
Gabrielle Blais-Jones Oh okay
