You know, compared to the other games, it's not fucking fuck awful. I mean, it's bad, but there was some effort put into it, instead of: "HURR DURR LET'S THROW IN ALL THE FUCKING UNITY ASSETS!"
It sounded fine to me. I mean, not GREAT given what I was working with but it didn't hurt my ears in playback. Then again I have no understanding of audio.
The jump speed, collision response and overall animations were dull, another thing is that this is not pixel art (some assets look like pixel art but overall it is not) , if the developer had gone the pixel art route it would have looked much better.
Johnny Ostad My thoughts exactly. This looks and feels like a '90s PC game. A good looker held back by technical limitations. Or in this case, lack of technical understanding.
You are right. This would still not be good enough for Nintendo or Sega at the time but for PC in the early 90s and late 80s very little is out of place (PC platform games were kind of awful).
Yeah, no jumping animation is hard to ignore. Also, there's a too high resolution for it to look 8 bits, or too few details for 16 bits, so it looks like early nineties cheap games a generetion too late. Not the best era for a retro style. They should have gone full Master System.
When I refer to 8-bit graphics/colours i mean that i have used a limited palate of 256 colours, and a maximum of 256 sounds, which are 8-bit, however when it comes to the look i've adhered more to the 16-bit console limitations era aka: scaling and the amount of colours available on each layer, also the boss fights were cut down for the trailer and game will be more than three levels long.
Hey, well done for not being a dipshit like most debs replying here :). And for actually knowing what 8-bit and 16-bit refers to I have the feeling a lot don't... Cheers! And good luck with your games. Wish you all the best!
When Beethoven sat down and wrote Symthony No. 5 I wonder if he could have ever envisioned that 200 years later it would provide the background music for Max the Cat. What times we live in.
It looks like the developer actually put some heart into this game. I just think it would be better on something like itch.io and not Steam. The game looks ok, but just not good enough to cost money.
Considering what we've seen in this series, this game looks by comparison good. A bit more polish and Waggtail could have a competent game on its hands. Somewhere, someplace, someone's mind has been blown by those parenthesis.
Honestly not sure I like videos attacking devs who actually made an effort to make a game rather than a shameless asset flip. Yes it looks bad but at least they made the art, programmed it themselves. It shouldn't be on Steam but it's not an obvious scam like a lot of games on GreenLight.
They probably made some effort, but the result is still awful and they plan to sell it against actual money that could go toward better devs. It's not because they aren't the worst of the worst that they are above criticism.
Peter Crosland If you do a bad job, you should be told that you did a bad job. Just because you do better than the students who got a D doesn't mean you deserve a B. Criticism is not inherently malicious as by its nature meant to tell you what you did wrong so you can improve. Whether or not your feelings are hurt in the process is meaningless.
You meant 'Than' rather than 'Thank' didn't you. Also maybe the word 'it' before 'to be'. And in your description you forget to put 'put' between 'developer' and 'more'. I presume hotel hospitality was rather good then? ;).
I guess you all make good points about criticism not being an attack/ malicious but it still seems unnecessary. I don't know I might just be being overly sensitive :3
Hey Jim, I just wanted to say the past month has been a nightmare. Aside from being diagnosed with stomach cancer, breaking up with the love of my life and losing a friend to suicide, its just general been a nightmare. But your videos are the one constant and humorous thing that I cam enjoy thats been getting me through this. Especially at the 10 O clock hour when I used to talk to my love. Its been a big help.
Honestly I feel really sorry for Poor Lion Smith. Like if your parents decided your middle name would literally be the word evil, how could you ever end up anything but a villain?
I swear I've heard the jumping on a bird sound at 3:25 from some other game. I want to say it's from meat boy, but I can't place the exact thing that causes it.
Second, I honestly do hope the developer keeps trying to make games. This game clearly doesn't look good, but it is clear they're passionate and just lack the skill to effectively implement their ideas, and hopefully with practice that can change.
I think the endeavor and imagination is to be praised. I love the spirit of this game. Continue challenging the cynicism of the industry Jim, don't add to it. Hard balancing act, I understand. Keep up the awesome work.
It's not a bad looking game at all. Animations could be worked on, but god, why that face for the cat? It's just so uncanny valley. And why underwear? Why not make him wear pants that shred when health is lost so he goes in his underwear like Ghouls n Ghosts?
Volume warning! Very loud at the beginning! Hope someone manages to read this before they start the video....I know it is unlikely but thought I would try. Still a great video like all the rest although it could use more boglins.
A lil-explanation of "8-bit vs 16-bit": "8-bit graphics" means 256 colors max, "8-bit audio" means low quality (usually chiptunes), BUT "16-bit game" means it runs either on CPUs like Intel 386 or consoles like Sega Megadrive (which, btw, could show only 64 colors at once - meaning, while being 16-bit console, it had 8-bit graphics). So, while the game description sounds ridiculous, it is technically correct. Today's computers are 64-bit, but use 16-bit audio and 32-bit graphics.
I mean in a world where lazy asset flip shit and cynical meme filled garbage are drowning the market it's refreshing to see someone actually give a shit and try to make something original. That being said I still don't think it looks very good, both from a artistic and game mechanic standpoint. Too simplistic and generic I guess, nothing really stands out. I'd rate it a good first try but maybe pop it onto newgrounds or whatever first for free and keep working on it.
i think this one could have potential, if the dev spends a couple more years improving his art skills, and developing skills and has another stab at it. i like lion evil smith, i like max the cat. its a simple light hearted concept, no pretentious silliness going on. its definitely not there yet but i dont think the dev should give up on it
Lion Evil Smith... I don't know how but somehow that reminded me of a song called John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt. Jingleheimer Schmidt sounds very similar basically.
I like the game. Smoothout the animations a bit, adjust the sounds a bit and have a graphics enthousiast touch up the assets a bit. My daughters (4 and 6) would love this game. I see no problem paying 4 or 5 euros for the finished product.
First Person Sterling is the true meaning of FPS.
At first, I thought the trailer was going to be in first person too and this whole thing was a gag cause of that
I thought the trailer would be filmed like that too...
You know, compared to the other games, it's not fucking fuck awful.
I mean, it's bad, but there was some effort put into it, instead of:
"HURR DURR LET'S THROW IN ALL THE FUCKING UNITY ASSETS!"
stride99 Honestly, if it was/is a pre-Alpha, I'd be interested in seeing where this goes.
If this is what happens when someone puts in effort, they probably shouldn't. Sometimes it's really just better to walk away with your pride in tact.
Yes, indeed, but if you never try you'll never know that you suck...
Jim if you're going to be making a habit of severely abusing my ears the least you can do is dress in latex ok?
comment posted 12 minutes ago, the video was posted 18 minutes ago and it's 10 minutes long... I'll leave the math
Pietro Pedone oh god! he must've heard the audio and commented on it before hearing all of the audio!
It sounded fine to me. I mean, not GREAT given what I was working with but it didn't hurt my ears in playback.
Then again I have no understanding of audio.
Jim Sterling
I'm mostly having a laugh :)
By the way, just trying to be helpful, I think you blanked on a couple words in the description
So this is how jim sees the world.
hears the world is more like it
Surprisingly lacking in penises and Boglins.
I thought there'd be a lot more flying pigs and talking sausages.
...At least the creator made their own assets for the game?
Fors Clavigera HEY RAVEN!!!!! 😃❤️
I can draw assets in MS paint, too
Honestly, this looks a lot better then most of the games in this series.
alot of these assets are stolen
Except the background music which is blatantly just Symphony number 5.
I don't think it's the graphics and art style that is lacking, it's the lack of animation and mechanics.
The jump speed, collision response and overall animations were dull, another thing is that this is not pixel art (some assets look like pixel art but overall it is not) , if the developer had gone the pixel art route it would have looked much better.
Johnny Ostad
My thoughts exactly.
This looks and feels like a '90s PC game. A good looker held back by technical limitations. Or in this case, lack of technical understanding.
Nailed it. The art style is neat, but the animations look stiff and that cat face is fucking atrocious.
8 bit graphics plus 8 bit sounds equals 16 bit game. Boom!
AlexDaEvilPig lol
You add 8 bit gameplay and you have yorself a 24 bit game!

What a good dude. I might go check out some of your games if they're on the store.
Well, this is the Dark Souls of not being Dark Souls.
Also: Cathulhu He? HE?
Also: beat me to it :P
Lawliet I prefer Cthunx
When Beethoven sat down and wrote Symthony No. 5 I wonder if he could have ever envisioned that 200 years later it would provide the background music for Max the Cat. What times we live in.
I mean I think this dev has the potential to make a really good platformer with some more experience
It looks like the developer actually put some heart into this game. I just think it would be better on something like itch.io and not Steam. The game looks ok, but just not good enough to cost money.
Lion Evil Smith's past is grim dark. I would talk about it, but I don't wanna cut myself with the edge.
I think Jim actually wants to tell us that there will be a Jim Sterling Simulator soon.
Someone already tried to greenlight that.
Ah, yes, the Jimulator.
Nel_Annette
You. I like you.
Jim Debébé's Incredibly Trick Lifestyle. 👌
*The sad thing is, the developer put more into their game than I did into this video.*
Jim plz. Now you're being too generous to them.
It's a homage... I think... to the typical GL page description.
Somehow, "Lion Evil Smith" (or even just "Evil Smith") is one of the best villain names I've ever seen or heard. I wish to learn more about him.
You drink coffee with your eyes?
You don't? Fucking casual.
I'm sippin' it with ma' butt: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee_enema
Rectal intake isn't advertiser friendly though.
Obviously, the game uses the 8-bits so well and efficiently, it feels 16-bit.
It feels like Jim has tied me in a chair and is holding my head to make me watch the video
Considering what we've seen in this series, this game looks by comparison good. A bit more polish and Waggtail could have a competent game on its hands.
Somewhere, someplace, someone's mind has been blown by those parenthesis.
Theese kind of episodes should be a running joke for greenlight trailers that were recorded on a handheld camera.
For a brief time, we got to feel like we, too, were the Beatles of people.
Liono: And I'm afraid that little Ringmaster outfit doesn't fit our All-BDSM dress code. No, not even if you have a whip.
You know, if this developer keeps at it, keeps learning and putting the effort in, they could make a good game one day.
Honestly not sure I like videos attacking devs who actually made an effort to make a game rather than a shameless asset flip. Yes it looks bad but at least they made the art, programmed it themselves. It shouldn't be on Steam but it's not an obvious scam like a lot of games on GreenLight.
I wouldn't call it an attack. I deliberately aimed to be more light hearted than outright brutal.
They probably made some effort, but the result is still awful and they plan to sell it against actual money that could go toward better devs. It's not because they aren't the worst of the worst that they are above criticism.
Peter Crosland

I don't know I might just be being overly sensitive :3
should have filmed it vertically
If the art style was touched up and the platforming was improved a bit, this could be a decent little game.
I thought I was the only person thinking it
Hey Jim, I just wanted to say the past month has been a nightmare. Its been a big help.
like others surely mentioned, i think making this game wasn't a mistake, but trying to sell it was
I really love these non sequiturs he makes during the videos. Lion Evil Smith at an interview deserves its own internet short series.
This is great!. All videos should be shot in first person mode from now on.
FPJ
are you saying Boo or Boo-urns?
I was saying "Boo-urns"....
Ett Gammalt Bergtroll I do not know why, but I am always glad to see your comments...
Paxxlee Your flattery sickens and disgusts me.
Go on.
I loved the change of pace! Great video Jim!
The dev must have looked at Bubsy and thought "I can do this!" then proceeded to smash their face on the keyboard.
Its always nice to see other people using the steam green light backer on their videos.
first person mode is the best can we get more. Thanks for the video. I know it ain't easy away from home.
Update: I think it's commander video's death sound.
First off, the happy little clouds are genuinely super cute.
Second, I honestly do hope the developer keeps trying to make games. This game clearly doesn't look good, but it is clear they're passionate and just lack the skill to effectively implement their ideas, and hopefully with practice that can change.
True, but i hope they publish a good game on steam next time, and stick to kongregate, or newgrounds, or another free to play site.
That possible would be a better place to start, I'll agree.
I thought it was candyfloss with faces one which are sort of cute.
I get a real Bubsy vibe from this game. They even have the same death animation.
"the developer more into their game than i did into this video" indeed
It's not exactly steam quality, but the developer clearly put in some effort, and I'd even say they have some potential.
Haven't watched it, but quite the immersive episode so far.
Mmmm yeah but not quite cinematic, right? Should have rendered at 24 fps...
this is the quality content i subscribed for
I think the endeavor and imagination is to be praised. I love the spirit of this game. Continue challenging the cynicism of the industry Jim, don't add to it. Hard balancing act, I understand. Keep up the awesome work.

Jim, I think you forgot to "have put more effort" into this video's description. Or was it intentional?
It does sound like the average greenlight page description.
Volume warning! Very loud at the beginning! Hope someone manages to read this before they start the video....I know it is unlikely but thought I would try. Still a great video like all the rest although it could use more boglins.
Lion Evil Smith... you know, "Evil is my middle name".
Yeeeesh...
A lil-explanation of "8-bit vs 16-bit":
"8-bit graphics" means 256 colors max, "8-bit audio" means low quality (usually chiptunes),
BUT "16-bit game" means it runs either on CPUs like Intel 386 or consoles like Sega Megadrive (which, btw, could show only 64 colors at once - meaning, while being 16-bit console, it had 8-bit graphics).

Thanks for this comment
I bet there would be a market for a game designed to actually look like a Bob Ross painting.
I'd buy it.
Hardcore Henry 2 is looking great
oh great, a camcorder shot gaming video.
can we get retsupurae on this?
Could he not have used an egyptian lovecraftian horror like nyarlathotep or something
8-bit sound+8-bit graphics=16-bit game? We have some Jaguar logic over here.
Haha, you're going to start a new letsplay trend Jim!
Next time jim can you just get a collection of soundbites of yourself and put them all together for a trailer like this?
Love how Jim warmed to this one towards the end.
I think its safe to say that Jimovision is a CATastrophe......
90% sure his name is Lion Evil Smith so he could say "Evil is my middle name!"
I actually got a cup of coffee before sitting down to watch this.
I’ll be honest, I like it. It needs much more work in every aspect, but it’s got potential.
First Person Jimvision? I was expecting all the o's and circular shapes to be POGs...
Well I mean I can see some sense of... someone knowing how to draw things in this. But I can also see that they need to improve a lot.
Watch out Bubsy, there's a new cat in town!
Lion Evil Smith: the best villain and username
Welp, Jim found his new villain for his short films.
So If I recorded this video straight from screen with my cam,...would it be Ultra-extreme First-Person mode?.
As someone who used to draw in Paint, this is reminiscent of when I started out.
awesome idea love it, so unique. feel like im you!
why are you talking about video games on a porn review channel?
First person mode, woah so immersive
8bit visuals plus 8bit sounds equals 16bit game, Jim.
Sorry Jim, I couldn't watch this with the camera wobble. Felt rather unwell. Thanks for that. But thank God.... for you trying while at a hotel.
i think this one could have potential, if the dev spends a couple more years improving his art skills, and developing skills and has another stab at it. i like lion evil smith, i like max the cat. its a simple light hearted concept, no pretentious silliness going on. its definitely not there yet but i dont think the dev should give up on it
This video is the Dark Souls of audio quality.
This is why we need RUclips VR
"You don't have enough bits, son!" - Jim Fucking Sterling Son 2016
Jim Sterling - The Not so VR experience
Would pay many dollars for that
I wish I was good at art so I could animate that whole Thundercats bit.
It's about time Jim took a page out of DSP's book. Things can only get better from here
Lion Evil Smith... I don't know how but somehow that reminded me of a song called John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.
Jingleheimer Schmidt sounds very similar basically.
that back ground music in the game, judge judy is gonna sue somebody
Oh god, this VR Jim simulation is making me feel nauseous. My body can't handle pretending that I could possibly be Jim. It isn't ready.
This video is the TRUE Jim Sterling Simulator 2016!
What is the music on that graveyard stage? It's a known melody I think, but I can't recall the title.
Ain't that Beethoven's Fifth?
Omg I noticed that too!
When will Jim Sterling Sim be out for the rift?
It's Dontrel the Dolphin: Remastered.
Nintendo has Mario, Sega has Sonic, Steam has Max the Cat
recording on a camera XD really jim.... something something... potato... much love
Cthulynx!
Love the immersive view, my eyes are just as bad as the camera
The Extreme First-person audio hurts my ears
I'm surprised there isn't a Jim sterling soundboard yet.
is this an action 52 game?
I can't help but feel this was developed as an official sequel to the last Bubsy game, but the changed the name and protagonist at the last second.
8 bits for graphics, 8 bits for sounds. There's your 16 bit game Mr Sterling lol
Still a better camcorder video than most who ended up on retsupurae
I'm starting to think that developers are upgrading from MS Paint, to Joining The Dots for adults
I like the game. Smoothout the animations a bit, adjust the sounds a bit and have a graphics enthousiast touch up the assets a bit. My daughters (4 and 6) would love this game. I see no problem paying 4 or 5 euros for the finished product.
