    I have the same plug cutters as mine came to Oz with me from UK. I must admit to the screwdriver technique. Never tried the table saw trick but then I don't carry a table saw with me either. The old school way I still use also is a dowel plate. Big thick chunk of plate steel with various size holes drilled in it. If I want plugs of the timber I am using split off a piece a bit larger than the plug size you want and then hammer it through the required size hole in the plate forming a round peg. Cut off whatever plugs you want. When we used to do all the draw dowel tenons years ago that is how we made all the dowels on site out of the timber to match.

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  2 года назад

      Hi Dave. The dowel plate is proper old school, but fantasticly simple and effective, and keep meaning to get/make one🤓 It's cool just reading about how you make your own dowels for drawing up stair string/newel tenons as stairs are possibly my favourite thing to fit, and the more complicated the better🤯 Great comment mate, and thanks for watching😎

    Great tip Del . I plug almost everything because I hate to see frames etc with filler over the fixings, and you are right prizing them with a screwdriver makes them uneven with can lead to them going in on an angle. I will definitely be using your Method in the future.
    The plug cutters always end up burning out…. It’s a right pain!! I generally buy eBay ones. Which do you use out of interest?

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  2 года назад

      Hi Paul. I think my plug cutter is a Trend Snappy one. I've had it absolutely ages, and it's well past its best. I like this particular type as it cuts the plug slightly tapered👍You're approach is, ultimately, the best as the timber plug shrinks/swells with the timber, unlike filler which usually stands ever so slightly proud once the timber has settled down🤩 Great comment bud, and thanks for watching 😎

    Here is a question for you TC unrelated to the great video.
    I'm hanging rebated prefinished dark navy blue doors.
    Customer has brought your normal albeit decent quality flush bolts and wants them in the rebate.
    This is a quality job so no tiny grain tears or anything like that.
    Customer hates ball catches(so do I). Customer does not want face fix tower type bolts either.
    Have you ever come across other methods?
    I was thinking some type of magnet in the head but not sure if that would work on the slave leafs. To make matters worse they are fire doors.
    Any thoughts?

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  2 года назад

      Hi Benjanin. Your comment got worse the more I read down it🤯 You've pretty much got a full house of difficulties there and all on pre-finished doors😖. If I get the gist of it though, you need to bolt the slave leaf of a rebated pair, but the customer doesn't want to see flush or surface mounted bolts? Top, flush mounted roller catches are not great, I agree. What colour/finish are the hinges, latches and handles?

    • @benjaminhunt283
      @benjaminhunt283 2 года назад +1

      @@thetallcarpenter Hi TC. Thanks for replying. The hinges and ironmongery are are brushed stainless steel.
      The customer has purchased 100mm long flush bolts which he wants mounted in the rebate, which as you know with a 22mm rebate and an 18mm wide flush bolt machining them in will be fun.
      I will have to make a jig for most of the processes, can't be driving out a lot of the material because if any of the swarf/ drilling debris catches the stained prefinished rebate it is possible it could mark it. Not to mention the fact you only have a few mill to play with.

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  2 года назад

      @@benjaminhunt283 There's a real issue here though Benjamin, that the slightest heavy treatment of the doors, either slamming or falling into, could just shear the flush bolts straight out the face of the door because it's got no meat around it😵 I'm not sure you're customer is being realistic in terms of what's possible and is asking you to fit something in a position it is not designed to work in😬

    • @baldyslapnut.
      @baldyslapnut. 2 года назад +1

      If the doors have a RAL colour get some bolts coated to match is the only way to go. Could possible put the star key type shoot bolts up and down, and have some aluminium escutcheons anodised to colour match the door. Like Del says, hardware has been refined over hundreds of years to do specific jobs in specific situations, and do so reliably. As you note, working outside those parameters is pushing it too far. At home I have a pair of premanufactured oak veneered glazed doors which I rebated. There is

    • @thetallcarpenter
      @thetallcarpenter  2 года назад +1

      @@baldyslapnut. Great input BS, and thanks for putting it here. I think using a star key bolt will be cool as the escutcheon is really small, or you could actually colour coded washer and just bond it on, which might not stick out 👍Cheers bud😎
