    Few things,
    - Paperback veneer is definitely not the best option for this,
    - Alternating the pieces at a shallower angle and 90 degrees is likely a better idea
    - You CAN run a sawstop without the brake cartridge, you just need to use the bypass
    - You should probably have MUCH more clamping force on the mold than you have been using
    - I think the wood blade might benefit from a more aggressive, lower TPI pattern with more support for each tooth

      Also, worth trying a harder wood than mahogany. Mahogany is popular, in part, because it isn't TOO hard, and is thus easy to work with, while still being hard enough for most furniture.

  • @HM-rz8nv
    @HM-rz8nv Год назад +43

    As a general rule, materials of the same hardness can cut each other under as long as they are sharpened enough and not so brittle to break under the required stresses to begin to cut the other material.

    • @off6848
      @off6848 Год назад +7

      I don’t think sharpness matters here the teeth are destroyed first pass. It’s the carbonization that makes it stronger so just use a flat blade with a harder wood than what you’re cutting. The friction is doing all the work here

    I like how the video unintentionally shows why carbon fiber (or really any) composites are so great. You can have a relatively weak fiber and a relatively weak matrix, but combine the two, and you have something with some incredibly strong mechanical properties.
    I’m assuming you are using epoxy resin, making this an epoxy-cellulose 0/90 laminate composite. I would recommend PFKK as a resin as it is generally better than epoxy but… well… it’s extremely hard to source and work with if you aren’t a professional within the composites industry.

    1. Mix the abrasive into some resin before putting it on the wood.
    2. Put the abrasive resin mixture only where the blades would be so you can go thicker using less abrasive.
    3. File the teeth so that they are actually sharp.

    What if you were water-cooling the wood blade? Lots of metal-cutting machines already include a spout that shoots milky water (water with lubricant) onto the cutting area, maybe you can fit the wood blade to one of those machines and see if it lets you cut much faster. I don't think the wood would get particularly wet because at the speed you're going the water will basically turn to steam at the cutting surfsce.

I'd also suggest quebracho, but it's really expensive and I doubt you could find enough that you'd want to waste it on something like this.

    I don't know if this would help, but when making fiber composites we do a layering direction of 0, 45, 90, -45, 0 which is called a quasiisotropic laminat. If you decide to try this again you could maybe layer the wood differently to make it mor balanaced. Not sure how much it would increase strength tho.

    What if you were able to coat the edges/ teeth of the saw blade so its not just the sides that have the mineral. Maybe it will give the teeth enough strength to actually survive against cutting.

    Should've used epoxy mould release when you were making that 5 layered blade, it would've made it much easier to remove the wood that was sandwiching it, just for next time :)

    Brilliant way to make a sawblade out of wood. But as long as you took to make it, I'd wager it's more expensive than metal anyway.

    ProTip: Using cedar or pine as the wood saw will make your experience more pleasant.
    But seriously, this is way under engineered here & I bet you could think of ways to make it better. More homogeneous resin:to diamond ratio. Maybe a blade designed to minimize heat rather than cutting?
    Also what would you call that metal & saw dust material?

    Can a Water jet show up on the Water jet channel??
    I’m sure everyone wants to know the answer to that!

    If I were to do this, I think what I'd do is similar but I'd change the following things:
    1 - I'd only make the core out of thin hardwood; the other layers would either be cardboard or paper. That would allow for a lot more cutting power, especially if you used a thin paper that tends to resist heat fairly well (like paper from a laser printer)
    2. It would have no teeth, though I might add a dusting of abrasive on the outside of the blade so it almost looks like an angle-grinder blade
    3 - I'd use the most heat-resistant epoxy I can find, though most of the best kinds need a degassing chamber
    4 - I would add something other than just silicone carbide - ideally a material that would act as an abrasive at low to medium temperatures, but ablate at high temperatures. That might improve the integrity of the blade and let the exposed grit along the edge rip more material off of what you're cutting before the grit is ripped from the blade's edge.
