    Have you ever made a pom pom for a hat and had it just fall apart? It is so frustrating to go through all that work just to have the pom pom fall apart. Not to mention how unsafe that is for a kid's hat. In this video I show you my technique for making pompoms that stay together.

    So glad I found this video. Had seen another about making pom poms that don't fall apart, but, they used a store bought pom pom maker which allows you to tie the center part tighter than normal. I was wondering if these pom poms could be made without that particular maker. TYSM for sharing this video with us.

      I’m so happy you found my video. I have a few of those store bought pom pom makers. I’ve never enjoyed the way you make a pom pom using them. Not to mention the fact that I’m always misplacing the tool. By using whatever I have on hand I can also change the size of my pom pom. I hope this little tip works for you.

    I used to make ponpoms with the kids in school and then turn them into animals, I have a book that shows how to combine them. You can also make little ghosts with white yarn and googly eyes.

    I just made a hat with two pompoms and now I'm half tempted to take them off and make some new ones like this because they'd probably hold up better, haha 😅
    I'm almost out of the yarn I used though so maybe I'll wait until they do fall apart before I replace them....still though, great to know about this technique for when I need it in the future, thanks for that. 😊
    I dont know why I never thought of trying them on both sides/in both directions, it makes so much sense!

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  3 года назад +1

      Maybe wait and see what happens. You could always make a me pom pom if needed later. Even if you only have a little of the original yarn left you could add in a complimentary or contrast color and have a two color pom pom.

      Trying to find something around here about the width I need to wrap. My hat for my daughter is tight on my head so I hope it fits her. I did the basic chain count for adult.

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  3 года назад +1

      @@cathyprusinski2420 If you don’t have anything the size you need you can use something a bit larger and trim the pom or cut a couple of pieces of cardboard the size you need.

    • @cathyprusinski2420
      @cathyprusinski2420 3 года назад +1

      @@rsislandcrafts I actually used a small paper tablet and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately my hat after following generic instructions for chain length does not fit. To tight.

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  3 года назад

      @@cathyprusinski2420 I’m glad you found something that worked. I’m guessing you crocheted your hat? It sounds like your initial chain was too tight. You could use a larger hook for your chain and then switch to the proper size hook for the rest of the hat. You could also try chaining a bit looser but if you go too loose then you’ll have a weird looking edge on your hat. Or just add more chains for a larger hat.
      If you used wool to crochet your hat then you might be able to make It a bit larger by blocking It. Otherwise you can find someone with a smaller head to give It to or donate It. Too tight hats make fun hats for teddy bears.

    You can stop them from rolling around by pulling from the center. They stay put & the yarn acts like a dispenser. You won't need a bowl. Nice tutorial!! :)

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  6 лет назад +1

      Very true. Some of my leftovers are already rolled in a ball so getting to the center would be near impossible. My newer scraps are wound with my yarn winder so those can be used as a center pull ball which is very nice. Thank you!
