    The AFC in the 1970's was an absolute meat grinder.
    Miami may have the GOATS of the Decade if Csonka and Kiick didn't bolt to the WFL. Steelers were better in the draft and finally had financial capital for the first time ever. Along with getting picks from Rozelle for switching conferences.
    The 1976 Raiders were the Best of The Best for one year. The organization deserved this title. And left no doubt on the field.

    Fascinating that the narrative of the opener vs. Pittsburgh omitted the infamous Atkinson forearm shiver on Lynn Swann and Mel Blount’s cheap shot on Cliff Branch Atkinson was retaliating for.

    • @haroldmccoy6748
      @haroldmccoy6748 3 года назад

      Opener was in Oakland my fellow NFL Fan,not Pittsburgh .Objectively speaking, congratulations to the Oakland Raiders fans , on a splendid well earned 1976, SB Championship Season ,16 wins 1 loss ,one of the Unfortunately forgotten or dismissed great seasons in NFL History , by many so called NFL Historians or simply not known by young niave , millennial novices .Truly one of the pinnacle NFL organizations who's transcended contributions to the NFL Corporation is one of the primary reasons behind the leagues apex North American Team Sports popularity .A organization which is first in many endeavors which have paved the way inthe NFL, first NFL organization to employ a minority as it's head coach Tom Flores ,first to have a minority and Mexican American win a SB " achieved twice" ,employ a Afro American as it's head coach Art Shell ,hire a female as a team ceo "Amy Trask" ,ole Oaklands loyal ,maniacal, raiders fans ,the unique brand of team characters ,the swashbuckling owner Al Davis ,the uniform logo ,the none cookie cutter mindset off and onthe field indentity of the Raiders was incredible to behold "I'm a objective Steelers fan stating this" . Now to your innacuratte, purely subjective , nonobective ,testimony ,my fellow devoted, NFL fan .Blounts hit was legal ,Branch wasn't down ,he was still in the process of trying to secure the catch , if you watch the replay Branch dosent lose ball possession completely untill his noggin hits the turf . Atkinson's Bush League hit was illegal ,it wasn't even actually involved inthe play , the ball wasn't anywhere near Swanns vicinity whatsoever ! Raw , nonobjective emotion is what your using to support ,Atkinson's horrific actions ,Blounts guy was actually involved inthe play ,Swann wasn't .Great season ,the raiders fan fraternity should be very proud of this 1976 SB Championship Team ,it was desperately needed to authenticate the Raiders ,as being a relevant NFL entity amongst the decades best as oppose to being a mere gate keeper to the SB Championship, good ,but not quite elite enough to sit at the table with the cream of the crop ,,,in every sports genre,during a decade , a team or individual in a sport has to overcome adversity in order to successfully scale Mount Everest , 1976 Raiders did that in order validate they were 70's decade elite team .

    • @balrog322
      @balrog322 3 года назад

      @@haroldmccoy6748 Blow that smoke someplace else. Blount-the dirtiest player in the HOF-could have paralyzed Branch. Doesn’t matter whether ‘Atkinson’s guy was in the play.’ He had it coming. The rest of your post sounds like the rejected first draft of a poorly educated millennial. Calling me one is a dueling insult, Ace. I’m 65 & I’ve forgotten more NFL history than a plebeian hack like you will ever acquire. Shove off.

      @@balrog322 typical emotional , nonobective rebuttal ,complete with the narcissistic,antagonistic, key board warrior spirit .I never intended malicious , disrespect towards your character ,I merely dissected your assessment with objective factual evidence ,which is authentically validated by game film and historicall NFL data .The Atkinson clothesline onthe back of Swanns head is not a part of the actual play ,which is across the field away from him ,he's literally running a route away from the live game action ,he was literally hit when the ball was completely distant from where he was situated at .Mel Blounts actual tackle on Clift Branch "Should be a hofer " was with the ball in Branch's grasp ,no whistle was blown to dismiss the proceedings ,no penalty called onthe tackle ,no former contemparies of Mel Blounts ever accused him of being a vile,dirty ,player . Factual content and context ,you can't dispute that ,,, irrelevant , zealous ,name calling amongst two udult men dosent merit a keen sense of wisdom , you also stated Mel Blount is the dirtiest player inthe hof ,despite never being labeled dirty by his peers ,hmmmm,there's several gentlemen,two by the name of Dick Butkus ,Gene Upshaw particularly who openly has admitted to loading arm pads with a hardening substance as well as his thumb wraps to create a club on his arms and hands who's bust occupy a place in canton ohio . So I highly despute that theory of yours also ,if you stated a enraged Joe Greene ,or Jack Lambert ,I'd agree 100% with you .Now to the concept you agressively tried to convey that age constitutes intelligence ,which is a complete farce ,a bunch of old politicians have proven over the course of decades to be inept at everything except loading their pockets up with loads of cash .The youth are lost because the so called elders haven't invested in teaching them their moral ethnic cultural doctrine , economic, educational ,moral tenents of the past lost generation into them ,if the youth are in oppression it's because the elders also lack true wisdom and intelligence or just to lost themselves to educate the youth ,so you boasting about being 65 " your blessed to be at that cherished age " dosent mandate wisdom or intelligence ,and at 65 dude you attempting the often bad practiced key board warrior routine should really be beyond your routine . I fully respect your energy ,which is why I relayed to you the compliment of devoted fellow fan , you selectively left that out huh? Wonder why ? Where is the toxic disrespect from me,to you at ??? I'm baffled ,if i was fueled by emotional bias , subjectively stated Franco Haris was a superior RB then Jim Brown ,or Walter Payton ,I have to be enough of a 3 dimensional thinker to acknowledge somebody is going to disagree with that false assessment and present factual context that will disprove my theory ,and yeah tell me I'm being nonobective for making such a innacuratte claim .Where is the disrespect baby boomer ? Are we now at a point in society ie liberal feminist empowerment, mixed with the conservative branch that we can't learn to humanly agree to disagree ,can't handle when a objective person corrects us for a fallacy ? Nobody is perfect,I've certainly made my share of mistakes in life ,it's ok 😆 to be humble enough to say ,yo I slipped up on that one ,my bad ,that's humility ,I've had to utilize that many times ,and if I'm blessed to live longer I'm probably going to have to again ,I will do it with ease . Your wrong on this subject ,but as I've stated before I fully respect your energy .Final note , I m.not a millennial ,I've actually witnessed live almost every SB .

    The Vikings just couldn't break their Super Bowl habit of coughing up the ball at the goal line. They were over-matched by the Raiders anyway, but it might have made things a bit more interesting if the Vikings had started off with a 7-0 lead.

  • @jeremythompson9122

    I'm a Bills fan but I always rooted for the Raiders once Buffalo was out of the playoff picture...which was pretty much every year besides a few(1974, 1980-81) until the Bills first started getting really good in the late 80's. I always hated the Dolphins and Steelers and those two teams were the Raiders toughest competition in the AFC throughout most of the 70's. So I always found myself going for the Raiders late in the season to win the AFC. Couldn't believe when Denver beat them in the 77 AFC Championship. I think Raiders-Cowboys would've made for a much better Super Bowl than Broncos-Cowboys. In fact that would've been even better than the two Steelers-Cowboys Super Bowls I think. The Raiders had alot of big game experience and the 77 Broncos were more of a one hit wonder who ended up turning the ball over 8 times against Dallas in the Super Bowl. No way in hell Dallas would've beat Oakland that bad in the Super Bowl. The 77 Broncos had a great defense but their offense was average at best

    Jack 'the assassin' Tatum, that dude was insane, I loved Ronnie Lott but Tatum was a more vicious hitter (sorry Darryl, I still feel bad about what happened). Tatum didn't try and stop a guy and just want to hurt them, he wanted to kill them! Man that was a great time to be a kid in the 70's and live in the East Bay. Snake Stabler used to frequent one of the bars in our town, Mike Siani owned a liquor store in our town, Madden lived one town over and two houses down from my step brothers, Sal Bando & Joe Rudi lived in the same sub-division as us and threw block parties, Rick Barry used to flip us off whenever we would yell at him when he would drive through town (and we were yelling nice things, he was just a prick). Screw New England and the sports era they've been living in with Mr All Star clean-cut Tom Brady, the East Bay Area was the place to be in the 70's. I learned how to smoke after seeing Stabler and Biletnikoff lighting up in the players parking lot at the coliseum after a game. How's that for role models? Yah yah yah, I quit smoking years ago, I bet fred hasn't.

    Without question, the best team in the NFL in 1976, 1980 and 1983. The Patriots were valiant in defeat in the ‘76 AFC Divisional Playoffs but Ray Hamilton DID hit Stabler in the head (deliberate or not makes no difference). And people forget that that was THIRD down and not fourth. So even if the penalty had not been called the Raiders still had another shot coming. It would not have been easy because they had 18 yards to go to keep their season alive. But even with the penalty being called the Raiders had to march down the field to score, which they did. The Patriots were excellent but the better team won the game.
    As for the Steelers being without Franco and Rocky Bleier and their ground game, there was nothing wrong with the Steel Curtain defense and the Raiders shredded it. Even if Rocky and Franco had been healthy it is hard to imagine the Steelers being able to keep up with the Oakland offense that day.
    The 1976 Raiders were my favorite of their three Championship teams.
    One question: why are Cliff Branch, Jim Plunkett and Tom Flores not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame? All three, ESPECIALLY Branch, deserve a home in Canton.

      Glad someone understands what happened in that game. Boston fans were the only ones whining when it happened. It was a blow to the head illegal then as it is now. My favorite Raider team was 1980, what a comeback story. 1976 was almost anticlimactic. My favorite Stabler led team was 1974.

    cmon eric,that was a terrible call. in today's game,it's a hit to the qb head. but bk then,the way the game was played,no way was that a flag. no way. but I do give the Raiders props that year. they played 5 strait games on the road in the beginning of the year. that's unheard of today. 3 strait road games and the players are complaining. if not for the pats,the Raiders would of had an undefeated season. the pats beat them handily in new england. and should of won the playoff game. The pats were the better team that year... just like the Raiders were a better team the year of the tuck rule.

    In 1976 the Patriots lose to the Raiders in the AFC Playoffs 31-28 with a questionable call. Fast forward 25 yrs later in 2001 the Raiders lose to the Patriots and Brady with the BS Tuck rule.

      Not a questionable call, it was a blow to the head of the QB, Not legall now and not legal then.

    They beat the Steelers in the AFC title game because the Steelers were without their rushing tandem, Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier...had both played in this game, the Steelers would represent the AFC in Super Bowl XI, not the Raiders...the Raiders got away with it and clearly had a huge advantage...lucky them, really

      Jay Hicks you cant just say what if. There are multiple instances in the steelers SuperBowls that i can say were just lucky but they still won.

    • @jaythebus
      @jaythebus 8 лет назад

      Wrong! I can say what if! Think about it...the Steelers relied on the ground game, and without their two top guns, their ground game was rendered moot...hence, the advantage went to the Raiders...

    • @geminijetsnewmexico2238
      @geminijetsnewmexico2238 8 лет назад +1

      Jay Hicks If if if. I can say so many ifs. If Jackie Smith did not drop the touchdown pass in the endzone in superbowl XIII the cowboys would never have had a point deficit of 4 and would have had the advantage going into half. Giving the cowboys the advantage in the second half most likely winning them the game. See what ifs do.

      Jay Hicks I think you're wrong. What, were the Raiders supposed to do to make it fair, take out Mark van Eeghen and Clarence Davis? Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Gives Steelers fans a good excuse. At least Patriots fans have a bit of an excuse with the Sugar Bear Hamilton call. C'mon man!

    the real Raiders when the NFL still played real football. it is a shame Al Davis took his feud with rozelle more seriously than his team, should have never moved to LA. even though the Raiders wona Super Bowl in LA, the 13 seasons in southern california began the end of the famed Raider Mystique. Oakland was such a part of their identity.
    when they returned to Oakland, it was too late to rekindle that mystique. yes they had some good seasons, but really, that Raider feel was gone.
    Al Davis ruined his own team. look at what he did to probably the greatest player in team history, Marcus Allen. it was Davis that talked about the greatest times being in the future and yet, Raiders have been to one Super Bowl in 36 years and got blown out.
    and now Al's loser son moves them to vegas of all places. blaming the stadium for not putting a winner on the field. as John Facenda stated in the video, "long on injuries but short on excuses." well those days are long gone.
    i was a Raider fan for 40 years, i will never cheer for las vegas nfl team. they are not the real Raiders.

      Lafayette Cathey I want the Raiders to do well, it is good for the league. Matt who threw 6 picks vs Florida? The guy that played for Penn Sate and when Hackenburg came and....after Matt he looked like Troy Aikman. That Matt? Hand the ball off as much as you can. Actually I am a PROUD Cowboys fans...not at all cocky but I am a realist and your team, I am sorry, is DEAD this year. WIsh we still had Andre Holmes though, LOL, you probably did not know he used to be a Cowboy. I will say this, I am glad the Raiders are doing well and have a future. I know Mr. Del Rio and he is class, so happy for him. See JDR was a Cowboy as well. So let me ask you this...if Matt started the entire year, would your team be anywhere near this position? If you ever busted on Trent Dilfer...just know, Matt is not even that good. Sorry, but look forward to great things with the Raiders this year. Oh yes, I must say this...it is the RAIDERS PR and website putting out the notion that the Raider Oline is as good or better than the Cowboys. LOL LOL three years together for this Cowboys line, and three different 1,1000 runners. Hey, do not listen to me..cool, listen to your boy McFadden. I rest MY case.
