The Vikings just couldn't break their Super Bowl habit of coughing up the ball at the goal line. They were over-matched by the Raiders anyway, but it might have made things a bit more interesting if the Vikings had started off with a 7-0 lead.
The Vikings got to the 1 or 2 yard line in nearly every SB before turning it over. The irony is that the fumbles usually were by players not normally the primary ball carriers. Question the play calling.
21stCenturyHandyman You can say the same thing about the 1968 Baltimore Colts, 13-1 during the regular season, and getting even with Cleveland, the only team to beat them in the regular season. Unfortunately for them,Namath and the New York Jets had their number in SB3.
I'm a Bills fan but I always rooted for the Raiders once Buffalo was out of the playoff picture...which was pretty much every year besides a few(1974, 1980-81) until the Bills first started getting really good in the late 80's. I always hated the Dolphins and Steelers and those two teams were the Raiders toughest competition in the AFC throughout most of the 70's. So I always found myself going for the Raiders late in the season to win the AFC. Couldn't believe when Denver beat them in the 77 AFC Championship. I think Raiders-Cowboys would've made for a much better Super Bowl than Broncos-Cowboys. In fact that would've been even better than the two Steelers-Cowboys Super Bowls I think. The Raiders had alot of big game experience and the 77 Broncos were more of a one hit wonder who ended up turning the ball over 8 times against Dallas in the Super Bowl. No way in hell Dallas would've beat Oakland that bad in the Super Bowl. The 77 Broncos had a great defense but their offense was average at best
Cliff Branch has better stats than Lynn Swann more touchdown's than Michael Irvin its an absolute joke he's not in the HOF not just Cliff but Tom Flores, Lester Hayes & Jim Plunkett maybe throw Todd Christensen in there
No idea how Cliff Branch isn't in the HOF. Tom Flores too. Branch and Ted Hendricks were the two main guys that played on all 3 Raiders Super Bowl teams. I think Dave Dalby was on all 3 teams too but I could be wrong
Jack 'the assassin' Tatum, that dude was insane, I loved Ronnie Lott but Tatum was a more vicious hitter (sorry Darryl, I still feel bad about what happened). Tatum didn't try and stop a guy and just want to hurt them, he wanted to kill them! Man that was a great time to be a kid in the 70's and live in the East Bay. Snake Stabler used to frequent one of the bars in our town, Mike Siani owned a liquor store in our town, Madden lived one town over and two houses down from my step brothers, Sal Bando & Joe Rudi lived in the same sub-division as us and threw block parties, Rick Barry used to flip us off whenever we would yell at him when he would drive through town (and we were yelling nice things, he was just a prick). Screw New England and the sports era they've been living in with Mr All Star clean-cut Tom Brady, the East Bay Area was the place to be in the 70's. I learned how to smoke after seeing Stabler and Biletnikoff lighting up in the players parking lot at the coliseum after a game. How's that for role models? Yah yah yah, I quit smoking years ago, I bet fred hasn't.
Without question, the best team in the NFL in 1976, 1980 and 1983. The Patriots were valiant in defeat in the ‘76 AFC Divisional Playoffs but Ray Hamilton DID hit Stabler in the head (deliberate or not makes no difference). And people forget that that was THIRD down and not fourth. So even if the penalty had not been called the Raiders still had another shot coming. It would not have been easy because they had 18 yards to go to keep their season alive. But even with the penalty being called the Raiders had to march down the field to score, which they did. The Patriots were excellent but the better team won the game. As for the Steelers being without Franco and Rocky Bleier and their ground game, there was nothing wrong with the Steel Curtain defense and the Raiders shredded it. Even if Rocky and Franco had been healthy it is hard to imagine the Steelers being able to keep up with the Oakland offense that day. The 1976 Raiders were my favorite of their three Championship teams. One question: why are Cliff Branch, Jim Plunkett and Tom Flores not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame? All three, ESPECIALLY Branch, deserve a home in Canton.
Glad someone understands what happened in that game. Boston fans were the only ones whining when it happened. It was a blow to the head illegal then as it is now. My favorite Raider team was 1980, what a comeback story. 1976 was almost anticlimactic. My favorite Stabler led team was 1974.
cmon eric, that was a terrible call. in today's game,it's a hit to the qb head. but bk then, the way the game was played,no way was that a flag. no way. but I do give the Raiders props that year. they played 5 strait games on the road in the beginning of the year. that's unheard of today. 3 strait road games and the players are complaining. if not for the pats, the Raiders would of had an undefeated season. the pats beat them handily in new england. and should of won the playoff game. The pats were the better team that year... just like the Raiders were a better team the year of the tuck rule.
In 1976 the Patriots lose to the Raiders in the AFC Playoffs 31-28 with a questionable call. Fast forward 25 yrs later in 2001 the Raiders lose to the Patriots and Brady with the BS Tuck rule.
They beat the Steelers in the AFC title game because the Steelers were without their rushing tandem, Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier...had both played in this game, the Steelers would represent the AFC in Super Bowl XI, not the Raiders...the Raiders got away with it and clearly had a huge advantage...lucky them, really
Wrong! I can say what if! Think about it...the Steelers relied on the ground game, and without their two top guns, their ground game was rendered moot...hence, the advantage went to the Raiders...
Jay Hicks If if if. I can say so many ifs. If Jackie Smith did not drop the touchdown pass in the endzone in superbowl XIII the cowboys would never have had a point deficit of 4 and would have had the advantage going into half. Giving the cowboys the advantage in the second half most likely winning them the game. See what ifs do.
Jay Hicks I think you're wrong. What, were the Raiders supposed to do to make it fair, take out Mark van Eeghen and Clarence Davis? Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Gives Steelers fans a good excuse. At least Patriots fans have a bit of an excuse with the Sugar Bear Hamilton call. C'mon man!
the real Raiders when the NFL still played real football. it is a shame Al Davis took his feud with rozelle more seriously than his team, should have never moved to LA. even though the Raiders wona Super Bowl in LA, the 13 seasons in southern california began the end of the famed Raider Mystique. Oakland was such a part of their identity. when they returned to Oakland, it was too late to rekindle that mystique. yes they had some good seasons, but really, that Raider feel was gone. Al Davis ruined his own team. look at what he did to probably the greatest player in team history, Marcus Allen. it was Davis that talked about the greatest times being in the future and yet, Raiders have been to one Super Bowl in 36 years and got blown out. and now Al's loser son moves them to vegas of all places. blaming the stadium for not putting a winner on the field. as John Facenda stated in the video, "long on injuries but short on excuses." well those days are long gone. i was a Raider fan for 40 years, i will never cheer for las vegas nfl team. they are not the real Raiders.
Lafayette Cathey I want the Raiders to do well, it is good for the league. Matt who threw 6 picks vs Florida? The guy that played for Penn Sate and when Hackenburg came and....after Matt he looked like Troy Aikman. That Matt? Hand the ball off as much as you can. Actually I am a PROUD Cowboys fans...not at all cocky but I am a realist and your team, I am sorry, is DEAD this year. WIsh we still had Andre Holmes though, LOL, you probably did not know he used to be a Cowboy. I will say this, I am glad the Raiders are doing well and have a future. I know Mr. Del Rio and he is class, so happy for him. See JDR was a Cowboy as well. So let me ask you this...if Matt started the entire year, would your team be anywhere near this position? If you ever busted on Trent Dilfer...just know, Matt is not even that good. Sorry, but look forward to great things with the Raiders this year. Oh yes, I must say this...it is the RAIDERS PR and website putting out the notion that the Raider Oline is as good or better than the Cowboys. LOL LOL three years together for this Cowboys line, and three different 1,1000 runners. Hey, do not listen to me..cool, listen to your boy McFadden. I rest MY case.
Everyone seems to forget that the Patriots not only gave them their only loss week 4,in a pounding 48-14, but beat them in the playoffs in oakland,if not for that lame ass late hit call. strait garbage... The pats had the best and most talented team that year.
damn right that was a bull-shit call. patriots were the best team in the league that year. the raiders then got fucked over in the tuck game so i guess it all balanced out for the fan bases

Cliff Branch has better stats than Lynn Swann more touchdown's than Michael Irvin its an absolute joke he's not in the HOF not just Cliff but Tom Flores, Lester Hayes & Jim Plunkett maybe throw Todd Christensen in there
Dale Gribble how about Phil Villapiano?
Dale Gribble how about Phil Villapiano?
Or Skip Thomas, John Vella?
Mark van Eeghen?
You are so right about Cliff Branch!!!
Branch has significantly better statistics than Swann.
He also has 3 RINGS!
He should be in HOF
No idea how Cliff Branch isn't in the HOF. Tom Flores too. Branch and Ted Hendricks were the two main guys that played on all 3 Raiders Super Bowl teams. I think Dave Dalby was on all 3 teams too but I could be wrong
Jeremy Thompson Dalby was on all three teams. Ray Guy was also on all three as well as Henry Lawrence.
There are different highlights as Bill King counts down the final seconds of the AFC championship game. This version is better.
How the hell is Cliff Branch not in the HOF?
easy, he played for the Raiders. same reason it took Ray Guy so long to get in and Kenny Stabler had to die to get elected.

The Vikings front four never touched stabler. The O Line dominated
John Madden was the coach
This was football glory
cmon eric, that was a terrible call. in today's game,it's a hit to the qb head. but bk then, the way the game was played,no way was that a flag. no way. but I do give the Raiders props that year. they played 5 strait games on the road in the beginning of the year. that's unheard of today. 3 strait road games and the players are complaining. if not for the pats, the Raiders would of had an undefeated season. the pats beat them handily in new england. and should of won the playoff game. The pats were the better team that year... just like the Raiders were a better team the year of the tuck rule.
Raiders need to come back to LOS ANGELES PERIOD...
In 1976 the Patriots lose to the Raiders in the AFC Playoffs 31-28 with a questionable call. Fast forward 25 yrs later in 2001 the Raiders lose to the Patriots and Brady with the BS Tuck rule.
Not a questionable call, it was a blow to the head of the QB, Not legall now and not legal then.
Today's Raiders 2019 👎👎👎
Or Los Angeles raiders
They beat the Steelers in the AFC title game because the Steelers were without their rushing tandem, Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier...had both played in this game, the Steelers would represent the AFC in Super Bowl XI, not the Raiders...the Raiders got away with it and clearly had a huge advantage...lucky them, really
Jay Hicks you cant just say what if. There are multiple instances in the steelers SuperBowls that i can say were just lucky but they still won.
Jay Hicks So, was that Chuck Noll 's excuse? Woulda, coulda, shoulda.
Sports greatest organization.....I respect the Old school Raiders, but they are NOT the DALLAS COWBOYS...AMERICA'S TEAM.Derek Carr 2016 RIP - Sad..
Don't get to cocky the cowboys Matt mcgloin is not a scrub some heads are gonna roll!!!
+Felony Strutter I would say maybe 10
+Lafayette Cathey But if Carr was there I'd say Superbowl.this year smh.
Lafayette Cathey That is fine, but the question was...if Matt was the QB all season, where would the Raiders be?
The raiders belongs to Oakland
Everyone seems to forget that the Patriots not only gave them their only loss week 4,in a pounding 48-14, but beat them in the playoffs in oakland,if not for that lame ass late hit call. strait garbage... The pats had the best and most talented team that year.
Satisfaction Guaranteed raiders were 13-1 that yr and that was not a garbage late hit
Eric Collins Cheatin ass pats always feel like they're entitled to something
damn right that was a bull-shit call. patriots were the best team in the league that year. the raiders then got fucked over in the tuck game so i guess it all balanced out for the fan bases
Get over it.... That's the past.... So SUCK IT!!!!!
Btw satisfaction guaranteed.... How many super bowl's have you won. .... Let it go.
