    The editing sets just the right pace to clearly demonstrate the steps without boring me with unnecessary details.
    The trick of jamming the crank pulley bolt with a bar and using the starter to crack it loose is sketchy, but I ran out of other options, and it worked perfectly for me.

    Thanks for putting this procedure to video. My 2005 accord has 145k miles and although there are no signs of any issues, I'm afraid I'm pushing my luck. Honda quoted me $1,500 to do the job with parts.
    That's about $1,000 more than I have available. I feel way more confident now.

      It is always dangerous for the engine to drive on hopes. I have destroyed a personal car’s engine that way. Doing it yourself you should spend no more than about $200 so this will save you a lot and keep the car going!

      Larry B How did it go? My accord has 162k miles and the belt just snapped this Saturday. I was quoted $380 for all the parts, $50 for the towing, and $250 for the labor. So around $700.

    great video for the nontechie. suggest to remove motormount earlier in the removal process for easieer access to sub assemblies,also for those who lost-thew belt, how to check for bent valves. 2 methods, rmove valve vover and use a straight edge to see if theres are any valve stem tops that are lower than others. if found remove and replace suspect valve and this the best time for valve grind, 2nd method is with cylinder head removed turn upside down keeping combution sursafce as level as possible, now add fluid (water?)to the combusstion chamber check intake and exhaust port runneres for liquid , identify and replace. I did the belt on my 1998 Toyota T100. Easy, it is all right there on the front of the engine. Lots of room. We had to manufacture the tool that holds the crank while you loose the center bolt and we were surprised by a 1x use bolt on reassembly! I had never heard of that. But basically a breeze because of access. This on the other hand... not for me! Thanks for the video. Saved me a lot of time and trouble while contributing to the local car mechanic economy. Thanks for doing this video. I'm probably going to be doing it on my daughters 02 Accord V-6. Looks like fun...er, not really.
    Makes me appreciate my two Mercedes V-6 and V-8 engines (M112 / M113) both have chains, not belts. On MB they are said to last life of engine, which is normally 250k-400k miles. I guess MB figured out how to make trouble free timing chains.
    Boy do I remember doing the timing chain tensioner & guides on the 1970-85 Nissan L series engines in my Datsun 510 / 240Z. Too many to count. If you did it right, chain didn't slip down inside. If you did it wrong, job went 3x longer. Old memories, not good ones !
    I think overall, the cars today are better off. Be it the Honda or the Mercedes.

    Your tutorial was a tremendous help! And it saved me untold amounts of money. It helped me know that there is no way in hades I should ever attempt something like this with my beginner Craftsman tool set and short-term memory issues. It would cost me a lot more to have a real mechanic fix all the things I would do wrong. I have a 2004 V6 Accord coupe with 6-speed manual tranny. It just went over 200k miles, and I had the 105k mile service done on it at the Honda dealership, which included changing the plugs, water pump, and timing belt. I’ve done much of the work on my 2004 ZR2 Blazer, and routine maintenance on the Accord. But I’m not gonna tackle the timing belt on it. Do you do service calls? LOL Anyway, great video!

    You don't need to clamp the power steering hose, you actually risk cracking the hose if the car is old enough. All you have to do is to take something and wrap around the opening of the hose then use rubber bands to seal it tight, move the hose to the side. Use the 19mm Lisle Honda harmonic balancer beefy socket and you can break loose the crank bolt.

    Great video. Have done this before but needed the refresher and found your video very clear. Do you have a video of the install sequence? Last time I did this and released the tensioner, the front cam moved about one belt notch and I had to pull down again, retension the tensioner and realign. Would be good to see the install or if you have any suggestions on how to avoid this issue it would be much appreciated

    • @TheFeesher
      @TheFeesher  2 года назад +1

      I do have an install video! The trick I currently use isn’t in the video though. I set it to TDC, and move both cams half a tooth clockwise. Then I put the belt on the crank, pull it as tight as I comfortably can to the front cam (should have some slack in it). Then turn the cam back to TDC, it should stop on its own once the slack is out. Then I pull the belt under the water pump, and comfortably tight to the next cam, then turn that cam back to TDC, everything should be tight and should be perfectly timed, also very easy to install the tensioner

    Wow!!!!! This video was aFRIGGINmazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You just made me an expert!
    Two questions: #1 - what if the front cam is not lined up? How do we "line it up"? Same as with the crankshaft pulley? #2 - "dumping the key" means exactly what? I have a manual. How does one do this?

    • @TheFeesher
      @TheFeesher  6 лет назад

      +Charlie Vélez thank you!!! As long as the belt isn't on there you can very slowly turn the camshaft with a wrench and use a big ratchet with an extension to put the crankshaft bolt in and slowly turn it where you need it to be. If you you use an impact on the crankshaft bolt be careful, it could pull the threads and destroy the engine.
      It took me a minute to realize what you meant by dumping lol sorry, my bad, I said "bumping" just turn the key into the start position for like half a second to turn the engine with the starter. If the belt is off though, do not to this. This one is a manual as well.

    Best way to remove the water pump is to insert a screwdriver in the hole on top of the water pump and pull away from the engine. It separates very easily. Just sold my 2007 accord V6 with 483,000 miles. Also, always use the Aisin kit (OEM quality)instead of the Gates kit.

    • @TheFeesher
      @TheFeesher  6 лет назад

      To an extent. It is interference, meaning that if it is too far off, the pistons will hit the valves when trying to line everything up. So everything will need to be turned incrementally. You will probably have a harder time damaging the valve train by turning it by hand than turning the crank by hand (that's just an assumption based on the leverage required to turn the two) so I recommend turning the cams as close to TDC as possible, then SLOWLY turn the crank it you feel any resistance. At that point it becomes a game of whack a mole trying to move everything into place, but it can be done. The problem being that it's a V6, there are far more chances for valve contact to happen, it it was a 4 cyl you may get away with setting the crank at 3 or 9 o'clock to safely set the cams. It may just be a matter of finding and angle of full clearance like the 4 cyl would have, and since I have never been in that position I would not know where that is.
      And yeah those crank bolts are stupid tight!

    • @melder5770
      @melder5770 6 лет назад

      the front cam is spot on but the back is off and the crank is as well. Everything needs to move clockwise correct? Crank is just past 12 o'clock and the back cam is closer to three o'clock

    • @TheFeesher
      @TheFeesher  6 лет назад

      You should be fine moving those into place. I've also had the rear cam jump. Set the crank right, and then get a wrench on the rear cam and throw the belt on

      That should be all you need to do, in some cases, the valves can damage the pistons when they hit, but that’s pretty rare for it to be significant, you will be able to see this when you pull the heads off though

Now, good grief!! is it going to be that difficult? I've changed three timing belts. Two on an 89 accord and one on a Toyota ( nightmare! You need toddler hands to get to the bolts!). How much time should I plan for?

    • @TheFeesher
      @TheFeesher  6 лет назад

      So it sounds like you have mechanical ability so it shouldn't be bad. There are only like 2 timing cover bolts that are easier if you have small hands on the rear upper cover, the rest are easy. Those old accord are bad about no room for sure though!

    I just bought a 99 accord with the v6 for 300 bucks and it needs a timing belt because the old one failed. I would like to know if this is an interference motor. Are the piston tops on the v6 capable of hitting or bending a valve if the tonight belt breaks? I would really like to know before I start breaking into it

    • @TheFeesher
      @TheFeesher  5 лет назад

      Yes they are interference, it doesn’t hurt to throw a belt on and see if it runs, it is possible for the belt to break and not cause damage, but it’s unlikely, you are probably looking at an engine replacement or cylinder head replacement, whichever you would be comfortable doing or paying for

    My timing belt on my 2005 Honda Accord EX V6 3.0L snapped while driving. I'm told I need an entire new engine because the valves would've hit the pistons, but I'm reading conflicting information online regarding whether it's an interference or non-interference engine.
