This always confuses me when people say this. To me, the deeper tones are WARMER, and the miss and highs are brighter. I don’t get how a GA with louder miss and highs sound warmer. Just a mystery to me, and maybe this speaking it are saying what they have heard others say. Let’s take two singers, a tenor and a baritone. Which one would you say would have the warmer sounding voice? To me, it would be the deeper baritone. Just giving you all something to think about. You may have it right in your head, but are calling it by the wrong name.
Dreadnaught is too big for my everyday guitar, but it's nice to have one for moments when you just want to strum away all your stress! The boominess of dreadnaught just can't be replaced (except for jumbo?)!
As a beginner lucky enough to have access to 5 guitars at home, I chose comfort over sound quality every day. For me , Dreads are to big, Parlor to small, classics nut to big. My folk size is just right
I went from dread to OM, exactly for the he reason you mentioned...my shoulder at 50yo does not enjoy the depth. I have been able to get a bit more depth of sound with a bit of body modelling in the Katana, and soon zoom pedal. I do prefer the OM soundwise for finger picking.
That's a good point. I'm shopping and although I prefer the depth of the sound on the dread, I'm worried how my older, non teenage shoulder, would handle the depth of the box
Can't agree more with you. Dreadnought has fuller tone especially obvious during strumming. However for flatpicking and fingerpicking, the difference is not so obvious and I prefer the refined sound of cutaway. I recently just bought a slim guitar about 6.5mm body thickness. I'm quite dissapointed as the sound is so tiny even more tiny than my 3/4 size guitar. Luckily it is semi acoustic, so I can still plug in to amp. So yeah, size does matter. Last but not least, I must say you are by far the best channel in doing acoustic guitar comparison because the tone you choose to play is subtle yet still seem skillful thus I can appreciate the tone better. Some channels, they seem to play super fast and agressive as if showing how expert they are, until the tone & tone diff can't really be appreciated. Acoustic guitar is supposed to be played beautifully not harsh and aggresive. Anyway, good job dave! Keep up the good works. 👏🏻
I have played a dreadnought pretty much forever, but I’m always surprised by the brightness in the mid tones the smaller body shapes have, not being swallowed up by the ocean of sounds a dreadnought booms forth.
This was so cool because if you were sitting in a music store and someone was handing you the guitars, you would hear the difference but not as well as you have presented it here. Great video!
Thank you very much for doing this video. I’ve been trying to decide between these two body shapes and this helped immensely. The dreadnought is the choice for me.
I was just thinking that I always prefer the ones with cutaways(?) since back then because I like the access to the lead and then you mentioned it. I'm always gonna be more comfortable using a cutaway. The wholeness of sound with the dreadnought is so noticeable though. Hope you do a throwback guitar chords/how to play of Marry Me by Train. Always loved that song.
Wow, I didn't think the difference would be so easy to hear. Dreadnoughts sound better, no question, in every style. Sure do like playing the smaller ones though LOL
@@quinnreierson thanks for your reply, yeah I'm leaning towards the Hudson as well. I guess I'm pondering if I would like to reach those 15-20 frets? Most likely won't use them much.
I am a dreadnaught guy. That being said, I liked them both. Flat picking goes to the dread. Finger picking goes to the GA. When plugged in, it was not enough of a difference to tell. I could hear it, but I am saying it was such a slight difference through the pick up that if I need one that way, I could go with either one. Now all that being said, I am a bluegrass player, and nobody treat reviews these plays hard enough for me to really hear how it would sound in a bluegrass group, but I do prefer the louder lower end of the dreadnaught. I love the looks of the other , but it’s not loud enough for me. I don’t play even half way up the neck, but still love the look of a cutaway grand auditorium. Great review.
Sitting here looking at both these orangewood styles, but the Austen and Morgan mahagony live versions. So glad I got to hear at least these body styles. I have an Oliver. I love it but I was looking for a little bit bigger and or a cutaway.
Great video! I have one acoustic guitar, (it's not my main instrument). I went for a full body, thinking it must be the better sound. From this video though, the cutaway body does give a nice gentle sound & seems to be better for some songs.
Just bought an Orangewood Brooklyn GA and I have a Fender Dread...I can’t put the GA down. Although not as loud, it’s much warmer and so much easier to play. I really like Orangewood GAs in general.
Man I love this kind of videos as much as the guitar lessons. I'm a beginner 3 months into playing and I'm obsessed. I love learning all the differences and nuances. Out of curiosity, if you are interested could you do a video about the differences caused by materials? Like how the types of woods affect the sound (if the do which I'm assuming but not sure).
Between these two examples, I'd use Dreadnought for when you want that intimate sound. The grand sounds more lush and better for when you want a more smooth, big and dreamy
Yeah... I prefer a cutaway, but I already have a Fender acoustic with a cutaway. So...... I OBVIOUSLY need a real sounding wood type tone for my finger picking etc...... Thanks P.S. I already have the Hudson in my cart :)
Strumming = Dreadnought Others = Cant decide. My concern is when I am travelling ( for example as an international student), dreadnoughy may be big for carrying.
I think between these two guitars, the string you use can make more of a difference. Changed out the strings on my Sage live with StringJoy Foxwoods and they made the guitar come alive. In other words, choose the size and shape you like and fine tune the sound with the string choice. And, of course, if you are playing solo or in a band makes a big difference. If in a band with a bass guitar, you’d want the sound guy to roll off the acoustic’s low end so either guitar will work the same.
Very good point. Especially in stores. Hard to say how much oil is on those strings. Bought my daughter a Mitchell exotic and it sounded better than most of the 700-1000 range guitars.😂
It's my first time watching this channel but your accent got me, haha.... Great vedio btw, I'm buying my first guitar and I'm hella confused between a cutaway and a dreadnought, I'm gonna do some research and then come up on a certain guitar and then probably gonna buy it! Thanks this vedio really helped alot!
Generally Dreadnoughts sound fuller and great for using with picks and strumming. GAs are better with fingerpicking and the individual notes ring clear and balanced from top to bottom. I’ve both sizes and would play either depending on song played. 😌
For me the Hudson is a richer fuller sound. The sage is a bit brighter tone and seems great for picking. I give the Hudson the nod over all, but I can see the Sage filling a niche too.
I think it's guitar to guitar. I have played dreadnoughts such as the Yamaha fx830 which are light and very comfotable to play. In your comparison I thought the Sage actually sounded much better. To me the Hudson sounded a bit dull and muffled where as the Sage sounded brighter and much cleaner. It also seemed to have decent volume.
Once you go dreadnought you're never going back.. literally you can feel the vibration through the body of the guitar, the sound projecting feels very full.. i once bought a parlor, folk, and GA body.. but i always back to dreadnought..
I preferred the dreadnought played unplugged. That extra power is just too good even though the Grand Auditorium had better clarity. When plugged though, I felt the pickup in the dreadnought was being overwhelmed and I preferred the Grand Auditorium.
for me i like the bass and depth of the dreadnought, as those low end frequencies can not be created later on in the mix. Also peoples, please be aware mic placement has a HUGE IMPACT.

The Sage had a brighter, more distinct sound. It seemed to separate the tones better. I like the sound of the Hudson when using the built in electronics. The Hudson sounded more "natural" in electronics mode, there was less of that "ticky" sound of the pick as compared to the Sage.
I've got a Orangewood dreadnought been seriously thinking of a Sage or a Morgan cutaway tossing it around with Yamaha and Ibanez cutaway grand auditorium's so many choices 😆 no way can i afford a 3-4k higher end😞 but I'm very well pleased with my current Orangewood. Thanks for the vlog i enjoy watching yours when i see them pop up👍😁
The sage sounds more balanced to me. Bright highs and clear mid and low. The dread had the typical droning. Sometimes overpowering low. Highs were slight more subdued. Overall the dread sounded a little less refined.
I currently have a dreadnought, but I want a cutaway so bad. Almost went to the store to check and buy a cutaway, but then this video.. God.. Tip for the shoulder ache with a dreadnought: hold the neck of the guitar more upright(like 70 degrees) , like some classical guitarists play
