  • Recently, I bought a car instead of a train ticket. Now the car has sold, did it make sense and was it cheaper than just buying a £118 train ticket? Also contains an update on the fleet: a 1972 Invacar, 1986 Citroen 2CV, 1986 Citroen GSA, 1999 Daewoo Matiz, 2001 Ford AU Fairmont, 2002 Citroen Berlingo and a 2006 Daihatsu Charade. And a folding camper called Bob. #waffle #cheapcars #reallife

In my head Scott (the train driver) got off the train, leaving *ALL* the passengers sitting there wondering when the train is going to start moving again.

As a train driver, here in Australia, I have often wanted to pop out at a station, with a good coffee shop, to get a flat white but the controllers take a dim view to leaving trains on main running lines. 🤪

In your calculations you ignored one thing. Time of travel. It seems to me that the train home was going to be horrendously long in terms of hours in transit. You would also be stuck on their timetable. By buying the car, you got home on your own schedule and saved not only money but time. So, adding up, you saved time and money, gained convenience on the day, had a fun collection caper, got to enjoy a different car for a spell, plus made more content for the channel. The only downside, such as it was, was the time it took to sell. I think you made the right decision to buy the car.

Letting Mini HubNut at Chemmy's old engine is an excellent idea. It'd give him some great insight into how an internal combustion engine works, along with some really useful life skills. Who knows, he may even be able to get it fixed.

Twice I’ve come across dual filament 21/5w bulbs where the filament had collapsed and caused a dead short between the brake light and tail light circuit. This can cause ridiculous faults. In the case of a Ford Escort 1.8D, it meant if you tried to switch off the engine with the lights on and your foot on the brake, the tail light circuit kept the stop solenoid energised via the brake light circuit and ‘ignition’ switch until you released the brake pedal. I had no idea how to start with that fault, so dealt with the faulty rear light first to give me thinking time and then discovered I’d also cured the inability to stop the engine! I then had to investigate to find out how I’d fixed it and discovered the fused filament within the bulb.

Can't believe how expensive your train tickets are there - 118 quid (close to AU$220), bloody hell. So yeah, buy a car is better. Wouldn't work here though, cars (at least roadworthy ones) are much more expensive, and our state (Victoria) government has recently placed a $10 cap on train fares within the state (as part of the recent cost of living relief measures). Love your video's. Cheers!

I understand the hesitance in getting the train back and opting to take the car. I recently travelled by train to pick up a car myself. Bought the tickets in advance, and arrived at the train station on the day, only to find my first train was cancelled (looking at you Transpennine!). Fortunately, I was in time to get another train which got me to where I wanted to be. Fortunately, my car purchase had no issues whatsoever (full service history, 6 months warranty and low mileage for a 13 year old car), so was quite happy to drive the 120 miles back. I don't think it's a Hubnut car, as it's a Honda CR-Z hybrid. What I will say is that it only costs £25 a year road tax, has relatively cheap group 17 insurance and has good mpg.

I only sold the cars I owned, never bought one to sell, and I absolutely hate it. I prefer making a loss to dealing with car buyers, especially when it comes to budget cars.
I remember trying to sell a Renault 4 and the guy during the test drive treated it like it was a Fiat Punto Abarth, wringing every last horsepower out of it. And then not buying it because it is 'too slow'. I recommended him to not buy any oldtimer... I had no idea you could make a Renault 4 fly like that, and I never want to live through that again.
Also if Top Gear has taught us anything, other than 'don't go to america' it is that even when you give cars away people can sue you. Go see the America special, where they try to buy cars instead of rent. They end up giving them away to the victims of hurricane Katrina. One of the three gets given away, one gets given away but they get sued for getting the year wrong, and there's on no one even wants for free. Not staged, that bit. To be honest, in those days Top Gear was way less staged anyway.

also, in our case, we pay 45 quid each time you buy or sell a car in transfer fees to the DVLA (Vic Roads). That is on top of the purchase price they also take motor vehicle duty as well which is another %5 of the purchase price which you must pay the DVLA again.

Fiberglass boats can live with osmosis for decades but obviously TWC's body is much thinner.

Not sure what you sold it for but considering 6/7 years a go even a 106 gti top spec model could be had for 2k, nowadays then are at 7/8k!
Cooking models like these less so but then again when they’ve all but disappeared, even things like Citroen c2s have gone too which used to be 500 quid cars no matter the spec.
That said the second market for cars these days has gone crazy, cars what were 500-1k 2 years ago are now 2k or more

These train fare comparisons always assume you are buying full price tickets on the day.
If you can book ahead and stick to a schedule you can get tickets at a fraction of the price.
Even if you can't stick to a schedule you can still get advance tickets a lot cheaper.
There are also all sorts of discount schemes like railcards.
I recently travelled 450 miles by car on a return journey and could have travelled cheaper by train despite getting 55mpg on my journey. The travel time would have been a little longer by train but only an hour or so each way.
I realise this is not always the case and if I had more than one person in the car it would not have been the case but train isn't as bad as often made out by car channels.

Public transport should be reliable and cheap - at all times. Greed has reduced the UK to a shambles.

    • @UnknownUser-rb9pd
      @UnknownUser-rb9pd Год назад

@@Codzilla71 Public transport is subsidised in the UK and cars are not subsidised and pay for themselves (though arguably cars should also pay for the pollution and health issues they cause).
So it is not accurate to say it is greed that keeps public transport expensive as the prices are kept down, paid by the UK tax payers.
Unless you want the UK tax payer to pay several times as much as they currently do like some European countries ?
Personally I think we should subsidise bus and train further and have a very high quality system like many European countries but many people will disagree.
From my experience services are better than they were in the old British Railway days though that might just be because things generally do improve over the years and comparing services now with services thirty plus year ago is an unfair comparison.
I'll just add that bus services in the UK are generally quite cheap and for most people it would be a lot cheaper than owning a fairly modern car (which most do) if you can put up with the inconvenience factor.
Obviously, if you live in a very rural area like Hub Nut and need to travel to a variety of different locations frequently (which is not typical for the majority of the population) then buses are not a practical method of travel.
