    Hey Mr. Build It!
    As an industrial hygienist I really appreciate you putting this video together to remind people about the safety aspect of doing home remodels. I have a few things that I’ve learned in my experience performing asbestos inspections that I’d like to share with you and your viewers: A material is considered to be asbestos containing if it has 1% or more in it, so those floor tiles do need to be disposed of properly. However, floor tile is your best case scenario as long as you keep them from getting broken, then the fibers will stay locked inside. Please use plenty of water when removing the tiles to prevent fibers from spreading in the air, and use the purple P100 filters on your respirator when working with asbestos. One more thing, you might want to get one more drywall sample tested. You took a sample from the middle of the wall, but we typically sample around corners and seams because that is where you’ll get the paper and mud included in the sample, and that can often be where the asbestos is found. Good luck with the house!

      thank you for writing up everything so well that I wanted to add! Hope he sees this comment and re-does the testing and follows the safety guidelines. I also want to say- that if its medium or high risk- its not worth your health to do yourself. hire someone to remove the material and dispose of it properly. I worked in restoration for years and asbestos abatement and removal is very very specific and needs to be in order to protect you and future people who may come into contact with that material. my province has specific area for asbestos waste to go.

    Careful with the drywall a lot of times athe drywall itself was negative for asbestos but the mud they used had asbestos mixed in, so unless you took a sample of the joint it may be a false negative.

    • @cardcowsports
      @cardcowsports 9 месяцев назад +1

      This is what my house had. The mud had 2% asbestos in it.

    • @MisterWoodBaron
      @MisterWoodBaron 8 месяцев назад +1

      I highly suggest taking samples of the drywall plaster. The asbestos was often mixed in with the plaster manually. Hazardous waste testing companions often will take 3 samples of plaster from different locations because some may have it and some may not. Inside corners of rooms are usually the easiest way to get a sample.

    Asbestos is a massive thing over here in the UK. There are a lot of people in the older generation who worked with asbestos (including my Dad) who had no idea of the danger. I've seen first hand someone who's no longer with us that was using a machine to help him breathe. It eats away at you and over time, the simple tasks such as getting in and out of a bath tub become more difficult. It's a really horrible thing and it's so important to make sure you don't come into contact with it. Nice video bro.

      I’m in the same situation. My grandad worked on boats, ships and subs in Plymouth docks. He passed away 8yrs ago. Basically due to lung cancer which took over the whole body due to asbestos.
      Can’t believe how mad it is in this country that we used “this holy material” kinda scary really.

    cellulose insulation is basically ground up paper, like newspaper. Also, when breaking up anything with a small amount of asbestos in it that you are able to handle yourself, wet it down to keep dust from coming up.

    Check the paper looking backing on your vinyl floor. The asbestos is in there not the linoleum ands it’s like 80%. Look for Armstrong stamps in the floor backing. Double check that joint compound too.

    I’ve been in so much asbestos over the years. When I was in my teens and early 20s I used to remodel a lot of homes and some commercial buildings. The pipes in those old factories and stuff were always wrapped in it. I’m hoping in the coming years that I’m lucky, because I for sure wasn’t safe.

When I worked in demolition just after the service, I know for a fact we were "living" in asbestos before testing and remediation became a thing. Like you @westvirginianminer3046, I hope I don't "hit the lotto" on that one. Take care amigo! 👊

    Should have that Asbestos professionally remediated, the disposal is also important to get correct as the asbestos shouldn't go into a landfill. In MA you have to hire a air quality person to test the air after remediation. When they remediate, they create a negate air space with hepa filter air purifiers and dispose of the material in marked bags.

    Great video! Very educational and great information. I liked the change of video too. I do have to mention that there's specific remediation companies that do this work because it's so dangerous. Certifications are included to know what to test and look for. It doesnt appear thorough testing was done and just like other people said, any trace amount of asbestos is dangerous. Because the house is so old, there's also other contaminants to look for like lead paint. I'm sure you know all of this but I just felt like I had to say something. Be safe!
    P.S. I work as a commercial contractor and this is the first thing we check before we demo anything.

    We had a community well where I grew up. Paid $50 a month for water (I think it was more like $20 when we moved in). Very convenient filling a 12,000 gallon swimming pool for $50 while my friends were paying a $1000 water bill for theirs 😅 but yeah, the whole neighborhood was piped into one well. Something like 50 houses or something were serviced by it.
    Also, I hadn't considered the fact that my mobile home was built in 1974 when we started talking about renovations. Time to get some tests done...

    Drywall might be safe, but if you hit cement sheeting (popular in your wet areas or high heat areas) then it will more than likely contain asbestos. Same for any fibro sheeting used as external cladding.

  • @ThyerHazard

    Not sure if it's already been mentioned here, but should you have checked the drywall in the wet areas (bathroom etc) as asbestos was used a lot in wet area's instead of the fibro that is used today. Also external eve's are common for asbestos sheeting too. Either way, enjoying the series, keep up the good work and can't wait to see the rest of the action.

    The issue I'd be concerned about is whether those sections you sampled in the kitchen area were remodeled at some point in the last 30 years or so. If so, then a negative result makes sense. I'd sample other areas of the house. Given the newer furnace in the basement, that insulation could have been added at the same time, covering up other dangerous materials, you may expose gutting parts of the house.

    • @mattbrown1463

Wetting it down is a good idea but add soap to your mix. Also, don’t brag about what you’re doing. if your city finds out. You won’t be happy with the fine that they dish out because you didn’t take proper precautions and procedures. Lol.

    I hope your viewers re-search and check other items that people use every day. Items that are currently being made as of 2023. That has asbestos in it. Like brake pads for your vehicle.
    Asbestos is as dangerous as they say it is. But I still say the number one cause of cancer is your past family. Cancer is hereditary. If you have a history of it in your family. You are more likely to develop it from things, like asbestos, smoking, and other things.
    This is a great video, and I fully agree with getting things checked out. If you do have a lot of asbestos in your house. If you are renovating it. Do everything you can to keep safe. Also, check your city code. Most likely you may be required to remediate it in a specific way.
    I just wanted to make a point that asbestos is still currently being used in quite a bit of stuff that we come in contact with every day.
