"She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain" Love this song!
Yeah, such a cool line. I “got it”once when I walked around a building on a corner and saw a beautiful woman silhouetted in the setting sun behind her, coming toward me. I immediately thought of this song.
Always been my favourite line in this song. Paints a picture in your head that puts you right there in the frame.
So many masterfully poetic lines in this song. "And the drum beat strains of the night remain in the rhythm of the newborn day" I mean c'mon...so beautiful.
mm-hmm!
One of the finest lyrics I've ever heard. You can actually see this in your head.
This song is definitely pure magic....OMG...it gives me a feeling that I can't explain.
Al Stewart definitely takes you to a special place and time.
The " Year of the Cat" and " Time Passages " albums are masterpieces
So are "Past, Present and Future" and "Modern Times"
Yes they are! Having been 14 when these came out they are bookmarks of a couple of critical chapters in my life story....
I’m 59 and Year of the Cat is still my all time favorite tune.
Best song of 1976 for sure
Also 59 and this one will never get old for me!
@Chris M I was a teen when they came out, now I'm 56 and these are bookmarks to critical chapters in my life story 😃🤣😃🤣
The whole album is good
I'm 56, this was my favorite song when it came out. It's one of those songs that still amazes me how good it is, no matter how many times I hear it.
If you look for the extended (yes, I said extended ) version, they play part of "As Time Goes By," further cementing the song to 'Casablanca's memory.
5:03 that face says it all. That transition into the sax solo gets me everytime.
Yeah..........................nailed it man.
I've watched a few videos of people listening to this song and every one of them is blown away by the way the sax comes in
This song is one of my favorites. When I used to listen to radio in the late 60s to early 80s I just took it for granted that we would always have great songs like this day in and day out. I don't even listen to modern radio anymore.
On the Border is another tasty track from this Scotsman. And yes, he puts on a great live show. A born storyteller, and a humble guy, too.
Love his live performance of On The Border
Had the luxury of seeing him a couple of times, most recently the 40th anniversary of this album. Beautiful concert.
Although born in Scotland he was raised, from a very young age, in Wimbourne, Dorset where he knew many other famous future musicians including Robert Fripp.
On the Border is my fave
@@iamreg1965 OH! I did not know this! Thank you!
Paint by Numbers - Al Stewart. Masterpiece.
Besides the fact that the whole song is so good, especially that main piano hook, that is one of the coolest and inventive solos ever: cello, to acoustic guitar, to electric guitar, to sax! Genius. Just love how this song paints such a strong picture visually, sonically, and emotionally. A long standing favorite of mine, and many others.
This song is the shizz. Haunting. Gorgeous.
This is a MASTERPIECE.
Just a great, great song. You said as I thought it, lovely. A lovely guy, having a lovely time, with a lovely woman, for a lovely song.
One of my favorite songs of all time
A Classic in the true sense of the word Chod, Engineered and produced by Alan Parsons, pedigree right there.
The whole Year of the Cat album is a masterpiece.
Alan Parsons produced this album
Also Dark Side of the Moon
There are very few other recordings that can top this for the orchestration and variety coming into our ears, a delicious treat. Suburb, just outstanding.
It really is a lovely tune. Engineered by the master Alan Parsons. Yes that's Al singing.
This is a song about a man traveling in a different country who sees this exotic creature “in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain”. She captivates him immediately and all she will say about herself references a year in the Vietnamese Zodiac calendar “The Year of the Cat”. She might be Asian but the reference to “blue tiled walls of the market stalls” seem to point to Morocco or some other North African setting. The man ends up spending the night with this exotic beauty waking the next morning to the realization that he is going to stay with her a while longer. This alludes to the possibility that while he knows he will leave her someday he will never forget her and may regret leaving at all.
Old cliche but they do not write songs like this anymore.
I’m glad that you are under the impact of one of the greatest Classical Master Pieces of all time , a Real Classic from 1976.
Al Stewart is from Scotland and yes, he is awesome , now I recommend another song that was inspired by this awesome song and it is called Baker Street.
Try to get the video right here on RUclips and you can see and hear Al Stewart and you will see the guy at the piano and the guy at the Saxophone and the whole group, get the video right here on RUclips.
Nobody seems to catch the fact that what you are hearing in strings is NOT the violin, but mostly the beautiful cello. that deep mellow sound..
...
A beauty from another Scottish song writer was "BAKER STREET" Both of these are treasures from the 70's.
YES!! Thank you I love Al Stewart! Check out the songs Midnight Rocks, Time Passages, Road To Moscow, Life In Dark Water and Many others. Al Stewart makes music that you get lost in. I love all the songs in the albums Year Of The Cat, Time Passages and On The Border.
The man is a genius storyteller. I first heard him when I was 12 and that was some years ago. LOL. Al Stewart is one of a kind.
It catches your soul and captivates it!
I saw him live at the Tower Theater in Upper darby, pa in 1977. Six rows from the stage. Fantastic concert.
"But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the newborn day" A favourite lyric of mine. Classic song from a classic era.
For me it's "she comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a water color in the rain" but the song is a masterpiece
This is lovely and is one of my favorite songs! And don't forget the drums in there too! I knew you would love this song. Who wouldn't? 🙂 "Time Passages by Al Stewart is awesome too.
The best Al Stewart song.
Hanging out in the park, keg of beer, a few J's , the party would sometimes go until dawn... 70;s
Well said!
I KNEW you'd be blown away by every aspect of the song.
Great video with him, about making it. It's an opus.
One of the finest transitions from acoustic >electric> sax ever concieved amazing.
Time Passages Al Stewart....⭐
I SO enjoy your reactions. Your unaffected delight makes me smile.
This is one of those songs you just never get tired of hearing. It’s soothing and takes you on a journey. 🎵❤️
The whole album is a sonic masterpiece.
I have the MFSL vinyl pressing and the equipment to play it.
Heavenly.
A man with not only great taste in music, but in LPs and equipment!
I also have several MoFi LPs!
Is your equipment vingage? Love to "hear" a rundown!
one of the greatest songs ever writen
I've always loved this song. It's such a wonderfully sun tale if you really listen closely to the lyrics. Obviously he's just come from seeing Casablanca (the "Bogart movie" and the reference to "strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre contemplating a crime") when he meets the woman who comes "out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain"... Just the beginning of the song is masterful storytelling! The music is amazing and quite diverse in and of itself... And for anyone interested, the year of the cat is from the Vietnamese calendar, or so I've read. The year the song was released, 1976, was the year of the cat...
A master story teller and historian. Al Stewart is brilliant. Check out Roads to Moscow and On the Border.
Roads to Moscow is a pure Masterpiece!
and oenophile
Time Passages is another great album of his - I've seen him (and met him!) numerous times and he never fails to amaze!
Lord Grenville is another magnificent track from the album.
Roseanna Smith you are so right, he is totally down to earth and as humble as they come, he apparently doesn't think he is any more than just your run of the mill singer/song writer, if you met him on a commercial flight and talked with him for two hours you would have no clue who he was or what he has done in his life, I should know, I had no clue until one of the flight attendants approached me later and told me who he was, and this wasn't even on first class.
One of my absolutely favorite songs of the era! Haunting...
Oh, Chod. He brings EVERYTHING to the table! A full meal plus dessert and after-dinner drinks! An utterly gorgeous song! And I’ve never heard a bridge guitar solo that reaches a peak...but it’s the saxophone that takes you back down into the beauty. I LOVED the looks that crossed your face ❤️
I too, was having so much fun watching his facial expressions! Then again, I always do. :)
Peter White, who later became a well known Smooth Jazz artist, played the guitar in this song. Alan Parsons was the producer. I’ve had the tremendous luck and pleasure of seeing them all live, although not together.
I have loved this song from when it first came out. It still gives me chills every time.
Well produced, lots of instruments, everything blending well. Al singing, great mix, the acoustic guitar solo followed by the electric guitar solo followed by the sax. The string arrangement, the great synth hook at the end of the song. It's a masterpiece and a classic.
Alan Parsons - Genius.
A true melodious masterpiece.
This is a big song..............................it carries a lotta water.
Very good reaction. Intelligent and thoughtful. Well done young man.👍
To Sir with Love by Lulu
Produced by Alan Parsons. Al came from Scotland but lives in USA now. Great reaction.
I’m almost embarrassed to say how much I have taken this song for granted. I have a new appreciation for some of the old songs that I only listened to on radio. Such a different experience through headphones. Love it ❤️
5:01 No one is ready when the sax kicks in. The whole track and album is a production and arrangement masterpiece.
This is one of my favorite songs. My niece (33 years old) hates it so I make it a point that whenever it comes up on my play list I send her a screen shot. xD
Al Stewart/Roads To Moscow
This is an epic album cut that is Must Hear Good!
Yes, great song!
One of my favorites along with Modern Times!
Al Stewart is a masterful artist. He has an immense music catalog, still performs, too. He writes a lot of historical songs. His Past, Present and Future album is great. Listen to Roads To Moscow. It will give you chills. I think I've seen him live at least 50 times over the past 45 years. So glad you appreciate him.
If you like "Road to Moscow," listen to the Waterboys' "Red Army Blues." It's the same subject-matter, and another phenomenal song. It's a strange coincidence that both songs were written by Scots: Al Stewart and Mike Scott.
I agree, P, P & F is a wonder! And Roads to Moscow is a heartbreaker! You jogged my memory when you mentioned that song....I haven't thought about that in decades.
This song hands down, one of my favorite songs ever!
This story is about a love story set in North Africa and uses references from the famous film "Casablanca" like "Walking through the crowd like Peter Lorre contemplating a crime".
MAGNIFICIENT :)
Time Passages is another great song. His voice is a mixture of silk, velvet and cotton.
Patchouli is an aromatic oil very popular in the 60's and 70's. Everyone wore it.
Greatest song ever!
Next up, Gerry Rafferty; "Baker Street". Another song with iconic sax riffs.
A song also engineered by Alan Parsons who suggested the sax solo, as he did with The Year of the Cat's iconic tenor riff.
@@sooutrageous007 Yessir! Alan Parsons is an unsung genius. His work with Pink Floyd, and many others created some of the best music ever, arguably the best at his craft. He works magic in the studio.
Chod: I like the way you react to each instrument that comes into play; must be the drummer in you......FYI there is a live performance of this on RUclips showing Al Stewart singing and playing the piano (if they haven't deleted it)....you have good taste in music! The other song he does which sounds a lot like this one is called "Time Passages."
great album, not a bad song on it. However it's the Album graphics that are really outstanding. check them out...
This is when something good matterd
Never get tired of hearing this song. Such glorious poetry. You can see it, feel it. The orchestration...that sax coming half way through. Such a wonderful treat for the ears and an instant mood enhancer.
Cool song, right? Yet another one which makes me so grateful all my high school years were in the 1970's. Radio was magical back then and made doing homework an almost-fun thing. (Thanks for letting us watch you enjoy it!)
Well said, my friend. We were there!
What a great reaction to a wonderful song! Along this vein, you might want to check out Traffic, Low Spark of High Heeled Boys... If you haven't already.
Bro, Thank you for reacting to songs that no one on RUclips would even consider doing!
I would love to suggest some I know you'd like but I'm a disabled vet and our govt don't give us diddly to live on!
Every instrument you can think of showed up in this masterpiece. "The Year Of The Cat" is in the top 500 greatest songs in music history. The music arrangements by Al Stewart is genius. What more can you say about one of the greatest songs ever composed...Brilliant!.
I'd say,,,in the top 50
@@jrm8899 Agreed!...
Al.Sings and plays Guitar in later Years
He played with Peter White
This song has to have one of the greatest instrumental breaks ever recorded, and THAT SAX!!!! Just amazing. So many memories from the '70's. Love it.
dude that was not a violin. it was Al playing the guitar sounding like a violin. what most people miss is the perfect tonal change. it was perfect
It makes you feel good.
Time Passages and Song On the Radio are great ones as well. These songs bring me right back to the time they were released. A much happier and simpler time...simply because I was young and didn’t have any worries.....
One of the best albums of the 1970’s, a great singer songwriter! On The Border is another great tune on the same album. Roads to Moscow is one of the best stories I’ve ever heard in sock/ pop songs, simply amazing!
Roads to Moscow has some great acoustic guitar as well
Another one you'd like isn't Al Stewart, but as a 'blind-side' it'd be great! Lobo 'Me and You and a Dog Named Boo' or 'Midnight Ghost' or 'Of a Simple Man'. Your choice (or all wouldn't hurt my feelings :)
Sonic perfection, produced & engineered by Alan Parsons.🧔👏
Never tire of hearing this. So so so good! Great solo too! Phil Kenzie on sax is awesome. He plays on "Time Passages" also which is another great song
Such memories of a beach in Florida 😢
Notice that Peter Wood has a songwriting credit on it. Wood was Stewart's piano player, and Stewart heard him warming up one day with the piano riff that starts the song. Stewart asked Wood if he could use it to write a song, and Wood said sure. Stewart wrote the music, but he struggled with lyrics until he saw a book his girlfriend at the time was reading about Vietnamese astrology, in which one of the years in the twelve-year cycle is the year of the cat. He combined that with references to the film "Casablanca" to suggest the image of a traveler in an exotic locale. Then Alan Parsons stepped in and suggested elements of the arrangement, such as the saxophone part, which Stewart hadn't considered.
This song has a special place in my heart because from the time my son was an infant, if I put it on, he would have the most amazing reaction. I discovered it by accident. Even if he was crying, he would stop almost instantly, and by the time most of the instruments come in at about the 35 second mark, he would have a beatific smile on his face and be enraptured as long as the song played. He liked other songs, but nothing else elicited that reaction. Everyone who saw it couldn't believe it. He's almost five now and still absolutely loves it.
Best Live version of this is "The Old Grey Whistle Test" version.
I think it was a cello, acoustic guitar, electric guitar...then sax
Incense and petiole oil, wow that’s a late 60s early 70s great smell and memory
Wow we were SO Lucky, but sadly, we took all of these great songs for granted. As they say.... never know what you had 'til it's gone. Greatful to hear them again !!!
A great song, especially that solo's, from the guitar and the saxophone. His song: On the border, also is great. And you will be surprised by his very short Fruit Song, that begins with fantastic guitar music. Enjoy it.
You gotta do a reaction to Gerry Rafferty Baker Street
One of the greatest compositions ever
Yup, he’s the singer... also co-wrote the song... and he and his band toured this song and LP... I am sure there are live videos out there! Great song😎!!!
OnThe Border next
That's Al Stewart singing Chod. Such a great song and I still get blown away with the line "silk dress running like a watercolour in the rain"...beautiful!
While I believe Year of the Cat is not one such, Al Stewart is known for being a musical historian. As you delve deeper in to his discography, be sure to research the story behind the lyrics to many of his songs.
Al Stewart's vocals are perfect for this song.So light and airy.Just
floats over this Musical Masterpiece like a cloud.
Perfect drumming throughout.
If I had to pick one for you to hear next it would be "Time Passages". Loved seeing each layer get added on, guitar too, both kinds, and yes, your face lit up, even when the percussion came in early on. Keep on, Chod!
The whole album slays.
Al is the singer and also plays guitar. He is a masterful storyteller through music. A model singer-songwriter. "She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain" - are you kidding me?!
Suggestions: "Road To Moscow", "Nostradamus", and "Time Passages".
That was violins. That was an organ and my friend is playing it.
Was not violins
There is a live performance from the 70s on the show old grey whistle stop.
Its the real deal, all instruments on deck. That is Al singing tho.
His voice is so relaxing and the story just flows so smoothly.
Such a beautiful song.
Al Stewart is an acquired taste in most instances, but because almost all his songs have historical connotations he is fun to listen to. One of his albums has a wine as the central role in all the songs. Always smart writing and tasteful music.
