I loved watching your face as each instrument is introduced. The level of perfection and grace in this song is unparallel. The beauty of it brings me to tears
Every instrument showed up in one of the greatest songs ever written...Loved and appreciate your reaction to one of the best Rock & Roll songs in history. Brilliant!.
When you put the brilliance of Al Stewart's lyrics together with the genius of Alan Parson's production, you have something so unique, it's incomparable and timeless. They will play this in 100 years and it will still be loved and enjoyed.
Not only is Al Stewart immensely talented but also just the most humble, engaging dude on the planet. Hearing him talk about the making of this song is a masterpiece in itself. Love your reactions Cynthia!
Al Stewart is a great musician and singer, I mean to say that he released this song in 1976 and it still sounds so good now and the guy still tours solo and in a group, transposed all the instruments to the guitar, when he does perform solo is amazing! I really love his song "Time Passage", that's my favorite!
I truly love watching young people discover the songs that were every day common place during my adolescence and young adulthood! Basically the 1970's sucked, BUT our music was GREAT! Getting into the top 40 and staying there was a true accomplishment.
A perfect example of letting the actual music create deep emotions instead of being too verbose, which most modern singers are.As a singer you don't have to fill every minute of a song with vocals.Lyrics can affect emotions as well but most people react to the tune first and then listen to the lyrics. If people aren't taken by the song they won't listen to it at all.The sax solo in this song is just magnificent and sends it to a new level. One of my favourite songs ever.
My dear Cynthia... I want to thank you with all of my heart for finally reacting to my suggestion and I think you haven't regretted it. ;-) If you could only have seen me watching this video with a constant smile on my face and in my heart. This was - to be honest - one of the loveliest reaction videos I have ever seen from you. Watching you enjoying this song needs no further explanations, indeed. If you want to hear some more from Al Stewart, I can recommend "Time passages (the whole album, there is no bad song on it !)", "On the border", "Broadway Hotel" and "Running man". I'm sure you will love all of these songs as much as you loved this one here. Sending you virtual love, hugs and kisses... your friend Gerry
From the moment I first heard it, “Year Of The Cat” has been my favorite song. Your reactions are priceless. Best music to heal whatever needs healing.
Your reaction to it was so amazing… it was so wonderful to see someone truly float through the song in its many layers and appreciate it. So awesome to watch you enjoy it.:)
This is one of those songs that if you hear it you will stop and rock your body and sing along, full warmth in your heart and chills all over your body. Never becomes old, it is frozen in time, never ages. I remember dancing this in 1977? 1978? when we still slow danced. LOVE IT!
The way this song was created is beyond bizarre (and a long story). But that was his thing. He was making movies in his mind when he created songs so it's not surprising watching Casablanca influenced the lyrics. Year of the cat came from a Vietnamese book his girlfriend had open. lol Alan Parsons is one of the best producers there has been and he had a lot to do with the sound on this album. As a guitar person, I was always drawn to the Spanish guitar on On The Border (another hit song on this album) but it didn't have anything to do with Al Stewart. Alan Parsons thought Spanish guitar would sound good on it so Peter White, who neither Parsons or Stewart knew could play guitar to that level stepped up and did it in a couple takes. It's amazing how some of these songs come together.
I've seen Al Stewart live three times and it's always a great show. On top of everything else, the guy is really funny! His live album called Live / Indian Summer is one of the greatest live albums ever produced. The quality of the songs and the musicianship of everyone on stage is beyond belief, as is the flawless production. Incredible music! Some of my favourite studio songs by Al Stewart are: Lord Grenville, On the Border, Broadway Hotel, Old Admirals, Roads to Moscow, Valentina Way, Life In Dark Water, The Palace of Versailles, Song On the Radio, Running Man, Merlin's Time, Rocks In the Ocean, Here In Angola, and Princess Olivia. From the live portion of the Live / Indian Summer album I would recommend If It Doesn't Come Naturally, Leave It, Year Of the Cat and Nostradamus/World Goes to Riyadh. Cheers, Cynthia!
I remember when this song first came on the radio. It played all day, everyday on different stations for a long time. That's what real hit songs do. All ages loved the song from 17-100.
The 1970s AM and FM radio airwaves were a veritable cornucopia of musical styles and genres produced by a great group of artists and bands that refused to be pigeonholed. We could not switch stations without coming across a great song! We were spoiled! 😊
This is a song about a man traveling in a different country who sees this exotic creature “in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain”. She captivates him immediately and all she will say about herself references a year in the Vietnamese Zodiac calendar “The Year of the Cat”. She might be Asian but the reference to “blue tiled walls of the market stalls” seem to point to Morocco or some other North African setting. The man ends up spending the night with this exotic beauty waking the next morning to the realization that he is going to stay with her a while longer. This alludes to the possibility that while he knows he will leave her someday he will never forget her and may regret leaving at all. Old cliche but they do not write songs like this anymore.
Great reaction, you obviously enjoyed it. Some songs/tunes have the ability to remember emotions you've forgotten, and visit your imagination whether you want to or not.
The more I listen to this the more attached I become to the poetic lyrics, his vocals, the complete and ingenous arrangement, the Alan Parsons engineering (who else could've done a better job?) and the players. It is my opinion that there is no song from the 20th century more beautiful than this masterpiece by a master musician. Thank you for loving this as we all do and thanks for your reaction Your face says it all.
I look nothing like you (obviously), but I must have a similar expression every time I hear this record. You have an instant instinct for beauty, and this is beauty. It's how we rocked when I was 17 in 1976. Really happy days. So glad you love it.
Thanks for this! I saw Al Stewart live, playing an acoustic threesome, several years ago. He played all of this album, plus a load more. And he explained what most of the songs really meant - often not what you thought! It was just brilliant. As is this whole album, and plenty more. Check out the live version of "Nostradamus", with "The World goes to Riyadh", or the live version of "Roads to Moscow". And, of course, the superb "On the Border".
Love how the Spanish guitar takes you right to the mountain top and then you gently roll down the other side with the Sax. If you love mood and violin, you should listen to Broadway Hotel. Same album.
You became lost in the dream that is YOTC like the rest of us who appreciate musical brilliance. Please check his other work. Time Passages will bring you nearly to tears, yet you don't want it to ever end........ You are a lovely young lady. Best wishes to you.
One Stage Before is another song from this album that I think you would enjoy. And if you want to hear what Al Stewart is capable of on acoustic guitar, might I recommend his epic Roads to Moscow
Hi Cynthia, what a lovely reaction to a great classic from the 70's. Al Stewart is a master poet/songwriter and a fine musician and vocalist, he has so much wonderful material. Year of the Cat is a fantastic album, be sure to check out from the same album: "Lord Grenville" & "On the Border", also his other big hit "Time Passages". Best Wishes.

I miss the Fu Fu. My soccer coach when i was younger, was Nigerian. I wonder where Joseph Takon is now? Anyhow, this song ive been listening to repeatedly since 1977. Great Tracks never get lost in the dust bins of time!
A study details and forwarded for you: Co-written by Peter Wood, "Year of the Cat" is a narrative song written in the second person whose protagonist, a tourist, is visiting an exotic market when a mysterious silk-clad woman appears and takes him away for a gauzy romantic adventure. On waking the next day beside her, the tourist notes that his tour bus has left without him, and decides to stay where he is for the time being. Thanks for sharing - Liked.
Lovely reaction Cynthia - you certainly felt this one!! This is a great song and it was a huge hit when it came out in the mid 70's. Another couple of songs to add to your list of songs to react to one day: "Heart of Gold" by Neil Young from 1971 concert and "Lucretia MacEvil" by Blood Sweat and Tears! Keep up the great work on your channel!
AL STEWART, "YEAR OF THE CAT"... IT WAS A PLEASURE WATCHING YOUR REACTION. THEN SURPRISES KEPT YOU IN WONDER...AS THE DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS KEPT YOU IN SUSPENSE...
The LINE UP for YEAR OF THE CAT (Stewart-Wood) : AL STEWART Vocals and Guitar / PETER WOOD Piano / DON LOBSTER Keyboards / TIM RENWICK Lead Guitar Solo / GEORGE FORD Bass / STUART ELLIOT Drums / PHIL KENZIE Alto Sax / ANDREW POWELL String Arrangements / ALAN PARSONS Producer - A MASTERPIECE !!!
1st time watching your channel because I can’t not watch a reaction to this song. I recommend you listen to the whole album and also All of Time Passages. Both were produced by Alan Parsons. You will find similar journeys with the other songs. 24 P/carrots is also worth a listen.
The long instrumental is the couple making love, from foreplay (strings) to intercourse (acoustic guitar) to post-coital bliss (saxophone). Then the song ends with a cat meowing.
I loved watching your face as each instrument is introduced. The level of perfection and grace in this song is unparallel. The beauty of it brings me to tears

Undoubtably the greatest song of all time AL Stewart Kicks ASS!!!!!!!!

Yes waouhhhhh❤❤❤❤❤sa touche l âme est le ❤️ un chef d œuvre
Al Stewart really lets the band shine here with several solo's
I am so happy you got to experience this song! One of the best ever written. Haunting lyrics as well.
Those lyrics tell the tale of all of us when we meet THAT woman. "...you've thrown away your choice and lost your ticket, so you'll have to stay on."
one of the finest and prettiest easygoing laid back rock songs ever
Everything about this song is beautiful. So many instrumental highlights that all create a masterpiece.
Not only is Al Stewart immensely talented but also just the most humble, engaging dude on the planet. Hearing him talk about the making of this song is a masterpiece in itself. Love your reactions Cynthia!

why did the 70s suck i disagree
I did a tour in Nam in 1970... from there everything was up!

One of the best songs of all time….a song that has it all.He has another beauty called “ Time Passages”.

I can remember listening to this song in the morning in 1976 while getting ready for elementary school
Al Stewart "On The Boarder" while short, is astonishing. The Spanish guitar is so beautiful.

The instrumental break you wish would never end!
One word: masterpiece!
This 45 years old song is one of my alltime favourites and what makes it so great for me is its interesting chord progressions..
I remember when this song first came on the radio. It played all day, everyday on different stations for a long time. That's what real hit songs do. All ages loved the song from 17-100.
Good Reaction :)
Al is one of the finest musicians AND Songwriters of the last century IMO :)
It just has everything for everyone, you don't even have a chance to pick and choose a favorite! LOL It's just all totally beautiful.
I think this is the most genuine reaction to my favorite song I'va come across on youtube. Thank you Ambrose for making my day.
The 1970s AM and FM radio airwaves were a veritable cornucopia of musical styles and genres produced by a great group of artists and bands that refused to be pigeonholed.
