I became a Yes fan in '71 when I saw them open for Jethro Tull. I had never heard of them (it was their first US tour).
I went to see them every time they came to Dallas.
Once my mom drove a buddy and I to see them and she sat out in the parking lot reading a book. My mom was great!
My mom had been a singer in clubs before I was born and even toured with Trini Lopez as a backup singer when I was a child.
Anyway I would play Yes records a lot. My mom would say that music was really weird. By the time they got to Tales From Topographic Oceans and Relayer is was really getting weird.
When I was in college I told her I was going to see Yes.
"I want to go with you"
    "Really?"
"I want to see what they look like and
    how they sound"
So I took my Mom to see Yes
It was the Tormato tour in the round.
She was impressed and blown away.
    She said I loved everything!
All the way home she talked about what great musicians they were and the great voice of Jon Anderson.
But it was that "Rick Walkman" that mesmerized her.
I consider it a special moment in my life that I got to shared something I loved so much with my Mom.
So she got it and she loved it.
    I miss her so.

I'd heard the same thing about this song being inspired by War and Peace. Not sure about the Battle Kurukshetra as mentioned below. The lyrics are vague enough that I think it's really about the general case of war and fighting, and hope for peace after the bloody conflict. Obviously, this would be a difficult song to "react to" on a first listening because there's just so much content, and it's not as accessible as some of Yes' other music.

I remember hearing this piece and the album, Relayer, for the first time in 1974. It was challenging, somewhat like Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, not always easy on the ear but impelling nevertheless and frequently astonishingly beautiful. I never tire of listening to it. It's like a musical kaleidoscope and Soon is sublime.

This was amazing in concert! The Roger Dean designed stage and lighting setup was incredible, with the light "pods" over Steve, Chris and Jon come to life during the battle, moving and exploding with light and shooting beams of light into the audience. All the while flames are shooting up the stage scrim. Then, during "Soon" the auditorium was filled with lasers in a display that will never be repeated due to safety issues. Multicolored beams of light were swirling throughout the hall causing a magical flickering as it passed over the crowd, faces flashing as the lights passed by. Phenomenal!

Miss Ambrose, you certainly took on a song of complexity of many fronts (musical technicalities, lyrical understanding, the whole blending from one realm to another, etc.) and went through it like a champ. As growing up as a teenager listening to Yes records and concerts, it simply amazes me how you youngsters react to their music, for it gives me a variant perspective. In listening to Yes and appreciating them, as you did, you've bridged different cultures, genera, ethics and race together giving hope for humanity and for that I certainly have appreciated your reaction.
If you truly enjoy Yes you should one day, when you get time, react to their song, To Be Over, which is also on the Relayer album, although they have a live version as well...I personally feel it an all time masterpiece...

I've been looking forward to see you react to this. Especially the third movement, 'Soon' which represents the aftermath of the battle.
For me it is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard and will be the soundtrack of my journey from this mortal coil.
The first two sections are the lead up to the battle and the battle itself. Remember this is largely recorded in analogue, the band raided a scrap metal yard for junk they could put on a rack and bash the hell out of during the battle section, pushing the whole rack over at the climax. That must have been an odd one for the recording studio 🤣.
I know you are guided by the emotion in music so please react to 'Turn of the Century' it's a beautiful love story so please have the lyrics available as you listen.

You have jumped into the YES deep end with this one, so many emotions, so many themes. So difficult for a first listen. In this song YES takes you to war and back. Amazing that this band can paint such landscapes, emotions, experiences and adventures using sound and song. Jon Anderson was reading War and Peace and that inspired him to write this song about the pointlessness of war. Firstly about how conflict and armies build as nations use various methods to convince people to fight as those who question war are cast aside. Then they go to war. Next the war starts and you can hear the chaos and fighting in the music. Then the war is over and the time for reflection then peace arrives. This ending is so amazingly beautiful after the chaos of war. This song was relevant in the 70's as it is now and will be for foreseeable future. Just think a song that can take you to war and back nearly 50 years old, amazing. Listen to the guitar work, the drums, the keyboards and Jon's vocals so much talent all in perfect sync. Thank you for doing this reaction, this song is valuable to carry into the future.

Check the 2001 live version, orchestrated. Search YT for "gates of delirium symphonic".
The video helps understanding the role of each instrument.

I saw them play this live. There is no band to compare to them.

I saw them do it twice. 2000 Masterworks tour and 2001 Yessymphonic tour with half a symphony orchestra.
I remember when I first heard the band in the early 70’s thinking “there’s no way they can play this stuff live…”

It’s been a delight discovering how wrong I was.

After the almost pedantic build-up and structural foundation of the first section, followed by the controlled chaos and madness of the middle battle section, the last third of the song is so heart-wrenchingly beautiful that one is left speechless in its glory and light. Amazing achievement!
Cynthia, I think it might be time to react to The Court of the Crimson King. Please give it a thought. Cheers!

Some will argue that Gates is their best song. CTTE or Awaken could also be voted best. Honestly there are so many great Yes songs. Just yesterday I listened to 'On the silent wings of freedom' and as unpopular as that one is, it is also great.

It does, after all, start at the gates of delirium and ends up coming out of "this endless night" with the hope of the light. As with much of Yes, it is very personal and is what you make of it.

My biggest respect to you for picking "The gates of delirium", not the easiest song to react to, even to listen to. Musically - for me - it's one of the most complicated songs I know. And this is - again, musically speaking - the greatest way a rock band ever described war instrumentally. When I hear this song, I can see the chaos, the fear, ...The singer Jon Anderson nevertheless is a very spiritual and peace-loving person and so, like in a lot of Yes-Songs, it ends with hope and gets very uplifting in sheer musical beauty. In my thinking, this is a song against war, a song for hope and unity of mankind. But that's just my humble opinion. Love your reaction videos. Greetings from Germany.

Yes is more in the vein of ELP. or Vice a versa. Meanwhile the 2021 Genesis "Last Domino Tour" is selling for as much as the Rolling Stones Concert Tix.

I'd like to see you react to Jon Anderson's first solo album 'Olias of Sunhillow ' from 1976. Very Yes-like. He played every instrument on the album. He took six months to learn to play them and really put his heart and soul into it. It's a concept album that tells the story of the people of a planet that is on the verge of destruction from as eruption massive volcano and Olias builds a ship to take all the people to leave in search of a new home. Based on the 'Fragile ' album cover for Yes drawn by Roger Dean. I think you'd enjoy it very much.

Remains the question perhaps the saddest question with the saddest possible answer. Why do young men do this? We may be able to work out why given certain circumstances. However the saddest thing of all is that none of us can even imagine a world where young men did not fight and kill each other as this goes to the very heart of what a human being is. God designed us this way, for both better and worse. It is what both kills us and keeps us alive.
