I'm fascinated by how universally accepted this song and this album is accepted by the younger generation on first listen. I was in HS when this album came out... After we cut our teeth on the Yes album, Fragile, CTTE and then Tales, our first reaction to Relayer was - WTF is this? We honestly didn't know what to make of it. Looking back, you are correct to say it was quite ambitious and risky to try to pull off a 21 minute song especially when its a departure from the sound you're fans were used to. The sign of greatness is that the album has stood the test of time and is even better now

I remember the cutoff point for Yes fans back then was with Tales. There was disappointment Wakeman was gone for this but Tales was too much for the casual fan. Their more pop 80s work really did them in. I had a very good friend who only liked this one and thats in 1975! It's a mixed bag.

The original production on this was awful. Its only the Steve Wilson remix, which has become the standard version, makes it listenable at volume. The pressing was shrill, shrieky, squealy, and smeared. So are Going for the one and Parallels. The new mix is like new prime era Yes album. This song is Chris Squires best power work. the bass wins the Battle of Poltava. Right here.

All while the stage scrim is bursting in flames! The lasers come alive during "Soon" reflecting out into the audience, safety regulations will forever prevent any repeat of this effect, causing people's faces to flash as the lasers passed through the crowd, filling the arena with a multicolored magical twinkling. I simply Love your reactions to the great band YES, to think I’ve been listening to YES since 1969, WOW, & after 50 years a young musician such as yourself comes along & clearly you hear they’re great-nest!! There’s so much more to hear, to think they recorded The Ladder Album in 1999, & then Magnification with an Symphony Orchestra in the early 2000’s. Plus they’re all very approachable, nice men writing great music who appreciated they’re ubiquitous group of fans, fans who worshipped them but they were just musicians who love they’re FANS!!! Great job Chod.

You speaking of the 35th Anniversary Tour, My NOT LONG LOST Brother of Mine & I saw that show from row 4 Steve’s side in Atlanta & it was magnificent!!! To think this would be the last time we’d see YES with Jon, even though I’ve see YES a few of times afterwards, 3x without Jon & once without Jon or Chris & we saw ARW twice, then Jon twice & Rick once in solo & then my wife & I saw Jon & The 1000 Hands Band in Nashville one month after I had the aorta valve in my heart replaced, it was magical!!! As you can tell I’m a huge fan, we also had great seats for the tour that Jon got sick & was cancelled. In the Fall of 2019 my great friend Nic Caciappo had backstage passes for us for Rick’s solo show but we should have gone to see him before the show because we were told he was exhausted & we understood since we know how it feels to get older. lol Saying I’m a YES FAN is absolutely True I have one tattoo & it’s the YES Bubble in the colors of the Tales album. Plus I’ve seen them numerous times in the 70’s, 90’s & 2000’s, they were always brilliant.

Even though this song is about Tolstoy's War and Peace Masterpiece Classic Novel which I have attempted to read several times....and never complete....this song is also about the War & Peace we humans are experiencing or have experienced in this Life!!!! When my friends and I first heard it we experience the struggle in and song and that ending brought tears and we figured that Yes was saying your struggles in this Life with your Life will all be over...you will past through to the world of Peace!!!! Man, that was a great feeling.....and hearing it again and watching you react took me back and reminded me it will all be over ....these struggles for Peace and Love.....and Peace and Love will win out and Remain. Now your next reaction is "The Revealing Science of God" and "South Side of The Sky" by Yes.

Chod!! You're ready to delve into, IMHO, Yes' masterpiece album, 'Tales From Topographic Oceans'
From the opening vocals of "The Revealing Science of God," through "The Remembering," the awesome percussion talents of Alan White on "The Ancient," and concluding with the spiritual "Ritual." The album is 4 side-long compositions that were woven together to create, arguably, an unintended divisive double record that caused Rick Wakeman to leave Yes for 3 years before his triumphant return for the final great album, 1977's 'Going For the One.'

It's become difficult in this modern world of distractions and momentary focus. Like an Opera?
I worked for years in the theatre, scenic construction, props, costumes lighting, and being able to hold an audience (or an individual) has become a great challenge.
We call it "the willing suspension of disbelief". You are no longer in a theatre, you are in that story, as a fly on the wall, or sometimes even a participant. The music you have been experiencing is very much like that, ( whether wil headphones or being there at a live show) inviting you in.
    Enjoy every minute....
It's why Yes, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, all of them and us(the elves in the workshops and the roadies setting up) do what we do.

Hi Wilburn; This is another great Yes song that I grew up with from the mid 70s. This time they take you to a war and back. Yes were amazing they could paint landscapes and take you on adventures though their music, like an Opera experience. For me The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans and Relayer are five of the greatest prog rock albums ever. This song that takes you through the build up a group pride (nationalism) and the building of a army to go to war. However there are some questioning voices. Then on to war, the clash of armies and horrors that follows. The after the war the renewal and rebirth. Which is a really beautiful sub-song within the song. You could listen to this song 100 times and pick up new aspects, sounds, sub-themes just so many layers in this work. Thanks for taking the time to do this review. Most people are scared of the song length but really it is too short. The amazing talent that put this epic together for such a sustained length of time really shows Yes for all their talent. And they did this for so many albums so it is not a one off. Yes had more talent in the first 5 mins of these epics then most bands had in their whole careers. Steve Howe, Chris Squire, Jon Anderson, Alan White and Patrick Moraz all at 120% producing amazing sound. Such a work is just as relevant today as ever. Thanks for letting it live for a new generation.

Yes has been my favorite band, by far, since the early 1970s. I've seen them live 7 or 8 times and miss their 70s lineup (although Patrick Moraz was playing keyboards on Relayer as Wakeman had left to do some solo work). The Relayer tour, like all their tours, was awesome and when the concert was over, you just sort of sat there and wondered, "Did I really see and hear what I just saw and heard?"
In 2002, they did a Classic Yes Tour, which I saw at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain view, Ca, where they played almost entirely 1970s material, and there were an amazing number of young people there who hadn't even been born when most of the songs were recorded.

Great reaction! Now we need reactions to some other classic over 20-minutes tracks: "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" by Van der Graaf Generator, "Supper's Ready" by Genesis, "Lizard" by King Crimson, "Echoes" by Pink Floyd, "Tarkus" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer", "Eruption" by Focus or "Song of Scheherazade" by Renaissance. To name but a few.

Good to see that you emerged from this reaction intact! The first time I heard this in 1974, I thought this is so different than anything I had heard from Yes before, but you still know it is Yes at the highest level of musicianship we had already seen before.
For sure, you need to react to the other tracks from this album. Then perhaps Tales From Topographic Oceans.

I love the chaotic middle section in this. The clanging sounds are coming from a percussion rig made from stuff Jon Anderson and Alan White found in a scrap yard near Chris Squire's home studio where this was recorded. The other sound effects are coming from a Mellotron modified by Patrick Moraz who played keyboards on this.

Here's a user's capsule review of "Gates of Delirium" on the Rate Your Music site that sums it up nicely: "Blimey, progressive rock has its critics, but without it we’d be missing out on some of the greatest music of all time, and ‘The Gates of Delirium’ is just so very special that hyperbole isn’t enough, because it really is that good." -- oceanrain

Yes, very much enjoyed your reaction and thoughts. Listening to this song once again and it never gets old. I don't know if anyone has done it yet, but this song should be picked up and played by a symphony orchestra.

Good morning! If ever there was a case for 33 &1/3rpm records to be 10 foot wide - this is one of many records by this group that'll fit the bill. 'Awaken' is another must. Both are being played by 'unknowns' on other planets'. Love the channel, it brings back so many good memories. Thank you & VBW x

One of the masterpieces by Yes (for me). And in the right order, "Soon" also has a very special meaning. Isn't it time to listen to the live album Yessongs now? Maybe the first three tracks ("Opening", "Siberian Khatru" and "Heart Of The Sunrise") in a row? I am sure; once you start you don't want to stop.

Yes is so mindful I think about human emotions. Gates really transports you through the gamut of emotions. Steve Howe's phrasing on this album is so unique and visceral. He really is pushing the boundaries of the guitar like Miles Davis did with the trumpet on Bitches Brew. It might seem like an odd comparison, but Howe was influenced by so many jazz guitarists like Kenny Burrell, the great Wes Montgomery and others. Great review! Very thoughtful 👏

I like what you said about a song this long having to really grab your attention. It's really good to see younger people getting really into songs that I got into when I was a teenager. (I'm 59, how did that happen?) Yes was my favourite band as a teen, even though punk was thing I was supposed to be into the late 70s in the UK. But the *first* song which grabbed me which covered one side of an LP was Pink Floyd's "Echoes", one the album Meddle. If you haven't already, give it a go. And the next was Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells. Your may like that less, but you never know! Anyway, keep up the good work!

And now you know why, for some of us , this is a go to band, their music is captivating. This is(unfortunately) not music for the masses, most will dismiss this as to long, or too complex, and pass it by. For me it is not only great music, but my drug of choice.Santana is just as good, just as complex, just as satisfying. Check out albums Abraxas, Santana III, Caravanserai, Welcome, and Borboletta.
