You took the words right out of my mouth , I'm 62 then listening to this song since my teenagers , And i have never seen or heard the live version , it was actually really good ! Nothing can beat the studio version though !
I've seen him in concert a dozen times. Of course he always plays this. He says there are two kinds of people in the auditorium. Those who have all his albums, and their significant others who got dragged along. And they probably have never heard anything of his but YOTC. So he plays it for them. Also, he says, he makes all his money off that song, so it has allowed him to live the lifestyle he loves -- touring and playing music. Every time it's different, never the same as the album which is total perfection, but always great to hear.
I’m 64 years old. And I’ve been a metal head most of my life. But in my teenage years I loved this song, and still do. Time Passages is another great song by him. I love your reactions guys.
Modern Times is a great song by Al Stewart meeting a friend he hasn't seen in 15 years at a bar and reminiscing about the good old days. It is a very smooth song with a superior guitar solo at the end.
Like pretty much all Old Grey Whistle Test performances, this was a great live take -- but the studio original is legendary for the quality of the instrumental performances and the engineering. Real strings, spanish guitar and electric guitar, and a stunning sax solo. Check it out some time!
Pardon me for saying but I'm disappointed you didn't do the studio version! But now that you're here there is so much of this genius for you to explore ❤
This is partly about the movie Casablanca (1942) “In a morning from a Bogart movie, in a country where they turn back time/ You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre contemplating a crime…
The studio version of this song is definitely a must listen. This live version is laudable but just doesn't compare to the lusciousness of the original.
I saw Al Stewart a few years ago live and he east still fantastic, it was a double header gig with Iain Matthews and both of them still have it. When they played year of the cat at the point the where the saxophone played, the saxophonist appear at the back of the theatre and and walk through the audience to the stage it was amazing. Dominica has it spot on at its best music touches the soul and makes you glad to be alive and there are still people out there doing it of all ages, and despite nostalgia you have always have to know where to look : listen for it despite many people rise tinted view of the past.
been a fan since '69. back then, he was acoustic folk and told stories about life. then, in '76, he brought out the folk/rock album, year of the cat, and completely refused to have anything more to do with his earlier work. he won't even say why. he is the master story teller. this whole album is masterful, having been produced by alan parsons, who had produced dark side of the moon. he once said that he had wished that he the voice to become a 'real' rock singer, strong and husky, but i'm so glad he didn't, as he became the totally original artist that he is here. road to moscow is a great song of his
Possibly the greatest song I've ever heard. A testament to the genius of Al Stewart and Alan Parsons, to say nothing of the consummate skills of some very gifted musicians.
The best storyteller and lyricist by far in music. You should try Roads To Moscow, Modern Times, Hellen and Casandra, Merlin's Time, Night Train To Munich etc - so good. He used to share an apartment with Paul Simon and at that time he was the one more famous! Seen him 4 times and every time was great!
As good as this live version was, (and it was!) you owe it to yourself to hear the studio cut from the album. It's an absolute masterpiece produced and engineered by Alan Parsons. The entire Year of the Cat album is magnificent.
This was a studio version. Live versions don't just fade away. They end with definition. Check the sax player. His cheeks aren't even full of air. It was an elaborate promotion video. 😮
I was fifeteen years old when I first watched this same broadcast of the Old Grey Whistle test in October 1976 it used to come on at 11pm on a Thursday night, i could not believe what i had just heard and the next day at school i was still humming it. And then low and behold i got it for Christmas that Year. The year of Cat album, still got it 48 years later. Great reaction guys
Al Stewart is a great Scottish singer-songwriter & folk-rock musician. He was big in the 70's. I had his album "Year Of The Cat" & "Time Passages". All the songs on both are great. "Year Of The Cat" is one of my favorites songs. Love the sax solo.
Great song and artists, probably my all time favourite, no, not probably, it is in fact. Unrelated, Andre, have you ever been told that you resemble a young Jean Reno, the actor?
The whole album is fantastic- I really like “Lord Grenville” as it is a historical song about a real event and the melody is gorgeous. It is off the same album - The Year of the Cat.
Hello friends! They chose the wrong version to react to this wonderful classic. The studio version is simply magical! The instruments didn't sound so good live. If you liked this, you'll love the studio version even more! Greetings from Tandil, Argentina! 🇦🇷🤗
I remember watching this the evening it was broadcast,.. and of course I had the album on the turntable.. on repeat. The point about those ties were there were so many bands of this quality that every week there would be an album coming out that you needed to get... I loved Al Steward then and I still love his music... And he's still touring. Which is the wonderful thing. And yes, I still play this album.. take it off the shelf and let my mind float back to those times... Keep on Rocking.
That song takes me back to maybe the best year of my life. Just out of the army, back from overseas, and into the warm arms of civilian life. "Incense and patchouli" is my memory also.
A transport song for me. Right back to the warm summers of the mid 70’s. Just driving around with nowhere to go. No worries, no stress, just slow paced fun nights.
Old Grey Whistle Test was a wonderful show; no audience, just the music played live. Thank goodness for the BBC. This is a great live version of a classic track.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written…
My favorite musician and my favorite song since 1976.
"She comes out of the sun in a silk dress....running like a watercolor in the rain"....BEAUTIFUL LYRICS!!! ❤❤❤❤
yes very beautiful lyric and easy to remember
Absolutely...!
This has always been one of my favorites. The studio version is absolutely stunning and gorgeous. Please listen to it, even if just for yourself.
I agree the studio version is sublime. From a time when musicians created beautiful music.
I agree. I enjoy this live version, but the studio version is a sonic masterpiece!
Music IS such a joy .... these folks are right - you MUST listen to the studio version. It is a masterpiece.
I cringed a little when I saw a live version. This isn't bad, just missing a few strings.
Couldn't agree more. The studio version is just brilliant.
Painting pictures with melody and lyrics. That is Al Stewart.
Songwriters like Al Stewart should be called troubadours
This song has withstood the test of time. It still feels fresh even after all these years.
I’m 63, 70s music was and remains to be the very best. ❤
The studio version is one of the best produced ever. You owe it to yourselves to listen to it. Love your reaction. Thanks.
a great song, one of my very favorites....it came out in 1976 during my freshman year of High School
In all my years (69) I have never seen a live version of this incredible song. Thank you for this!
Pity though that this live version is not as good as the original.
You took the words right out of my mouth , I'm 62 then listening to this song since my teenagers , And i have never seen or heard the live version , it was actually really good ! Nothing can beat the studio version though !
Enjoy being 69.I lose that tag in 12 days....lol

A favorite. So well written and performed. I love the transition from guitar to sax. So beautiful. Thanks for enjoying. ☮💚🎶
Great song. Almost everyone of my age (68), some younger, some older (music minded) do have this album (with the same name) in their collection !
I do . I'm 62 and the vinyl àlbum still with me .!!
I proudly owned this album. The whole thing is wonderful!
"She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain . . ." What a terrific lyric. Great reactions as usual, guys.
Still my favourite lyric:)
Modern Times is a great song by Al Stewart meeting a friend he hasn't seen in 15 years at a bar and reminiscing about the good old days. It is a very smooth song with a superior guitar solo at the end.

The Studio Version is also worth listening to. Time Passages and Dark Water are also great tracks! Al Stewart is a great story teller!
GOAT for me. Saw him in Cincinnati, awesome even at almost 80❤
I had Al Stewart's greatest hits on cassette around 40 years ago. When discs came around this was the first one I purchased.
It’s a perfectly recorded song on the album.
this has always been one of my favourite songs, i remember when it came out.
Do yourselves a huge favour and listen to the studio version. It is so beautifully put together. Much much better than this live version.
"Year of the Cat", then "Time Passages", then "Song on the Radio". All masterpieces.
This came out while I was deployed to the Carribean while serving in the Navy. Great memories.
Love me some Al Stewart. This song is the perfect soft rock of the ‘70s. You’re right that we took this for granted at the time.
Y’all are beautiful people. Thank you for the joy you show.
Studio version a must
One of the classic songs of the rock and roll era. Brilliant instrumentation.
In America, his song was *So* big- it defined the late 70's for a lot of us. All over the radio for years.
Hear after the studio version.😊
Pardon me for saying but I'm disappointed you didn't do the studio version! But now that you're here there is so much of this genius for you to explore ❤
Iconic, brilliant song. Great memories.
This song is a masterpiece. The use of instruments in that order in that composition is genius. It's in my top 10 ever.
LOVE AL STEWART!!! SO GOOD!! There are many by him that are VERY GOOD! ENJOY!!! Thanks for the GREAT REACTIONS, YOU-TWO!! HUGS!!
Check out Al Stewart "Times Passages".and
Gerry Rafferty " "Right Down the Line"
This song just takes you on a journey of pure magic, I have loved this song for decades.
You will most likely enjoy "Roads to Moscow", 'On the Boarder", and "Modern Times" by Al Stewart.
You have to listen to the studio version as it's fantastic!
Excellent. Live. No auto tune in-those days. Wonderful
Master class in Musicianship ❤️
What a Classic! Music is a joy with beautiful songs as this.

One Million Per Cent.
Awww, I've always loved this song. Thanks for your lovely reaction!
Love the Song and the album❤❤

Now you need to listen to On The Border by Al Stewart!
Masterpiece!🎉
Love this song !

I think you should listen to the studio version which is perfect with production by Alan Parsons.
"Time Passages" is a most excellent tune. Much like "Year of the Cat". It reaches down into me. 👍👍😎🇺🇸
Both of you always put a smile 😊 on my face with your modesty & comments. ( Thanks )
Our pleasure! 😁💚 Thank you for enjoying our videos 🙂

When you put the brilliance of Al Stewart lyrics together with the Production of Alan Parsons, you have perfection.
Never saw this live version, pretty neat!
You should also check out "Time Passages", another huge hit of his.
As good as this live version was, (and it was!) you owe it to yourself to hear the studio cut from the album. It's an absolute masterpiece produced and engineered by Alan Parsons. The entire Year of the Cat album is magnificent.
Al is a British (Scottish) singer/songwriter/performer. One of our finest.
You mentioned that you couldn't hear an accent. I can, but I would not have guessed Scottish. It sounded like northern England to my American ear.
This was very good, but the studio version is great.
Such a great song from a stellar album!
This was a studio version. Live versions don't just fade away. They end with definition. Check the sax player. His cheeks aren't even full of air. It was an elaborate promotion video. 😮
hes such a great story teller!

One of my favourite singer songwriters.such a classic song.

Very good song and so is Time Passages
Love this song ❤
Amazing tune. Still on my playlist.
Inspired in part by the characters, (and actors,) in the movie Casablanca.
This is a universally loved song. Picture a bazaar in Morocco.
Great song and artists, probably my all time favourite, no, not probably, it is in fact. Unrelated, Andre, have you ever been told that you resemble a young Jean Reno, the actor?
Oh my...yes, i see it! (Dominika here) Young Jean Reno! It's the eyes! 👀 Many thanks 😊
Try On the Border from the same album..great songs from a sadly underestimated musiscian..nice reactions, folks, thank you
Gah..musician..
The whole album is fantastic- I really like “Lord Grenville” as it is a historical song about a real event and the melody is gorgeous. It is off the same album - The Year of the Cat.
On The Border and so many others. I have just ordered The CD for my car. I am always about 20 years behind:)
The lyrics are so beautiful they give me chills every time i hear them.
I have 8 cats (and 4 dogs) and play this song to them on guitar all the time - they love it!
Amazing 🐶🐱🎸💚
Studio version is so much better. More refined, longer and clearer. Give it a try when you have time!
Hello friends! They chose the wrong version to react to this wonderful classic. The studio version is simply magical! The instruments didn't sound so good live. If you liked this, you'll love the studio version even more! Greetings from Tandil, Argentina! 🇦🇷🤗
Time Passages another must listen by him recorded around the same time as this song.
From his bigger hits, I'd say Time Passages is my favorite. Same feel as this song.
Al is still touring at nearly 80 years of age. I saw him a few months back in Los Angeles with the Empty Pockets!
I don't know why, but when I hear this song I picture them in Marakesh.
I prefer the studio version of this song.
Watching this live has changed my entire perception of this song. Thanks for another great reaction.❤
I forgot all about this artist. Thanks for the video.
Just a note, the comments are so informative.
Al Stewart's songs about historical occurrences are masterful and beautiful. ROADS TO MOSCOW. Eyes of Nostradamus, etc.
And Palace of Versailles, as well as Man For All Seasons . . . Many brilliant songs.
Such a cool arragement.
This version 8/10. STUDIO VERSION 10/10=Musucal Perfection.

What a great song!!!
Lyrics are remarkable, considering the story, musica too. Alan Parson's producción appears allá around. 👏👏👏👏👏
A transport song for me. Right back to the warm summers of the mid 70’s. Just driving around with nowhere to go. No worries, no stress, just slow paced fun nights.
has to be studio album version….never do live first time listening
Classic!
Love the show
Old Grey Whistle Test was a wonderful show; no audience, just the music played live. Thank goodness for the BBC. This is a great live version of a classic track.
