- DISCLAIMER this is my own personal approach to cel animation, it has a bit of quirk to it and is not a traditional method
Here is a good walk-through:

In this demo I go through drawing, inking and painting, scanning and editing a 6 second cel animation.
Here's another demo I've done that details painting and scanning more

Too bad cel animation is obsolete for today's standard of animation. Let's not forget that _Ed, Edd, n Eddy_ is the last cartoon to use cel before transitioned into digital ink-and-paint. Times have change when it comes to digital drawings but at least there are some people, like you, can managed to bring cel animation back, even if it's not popular as it used to. What a mad respect!
There was a Japanese cartoon still using cels until 2013.
@Mr. Will Yeah, I know all about that, and I believe the 2013 episodes are on RUclips, if you wanna see the last of cel animation on TV. I also think King of the Hill was a contender for the final cel animated American TV show with Rich Hank, Poor Hank airing in 2004.
@Mr. Will The Simpsons also used cels up until December 2002.
@AutismoGamer is that true?
Also, spongebob used in Season 1 at 1999.
Wow you're the most patient animator i have ever met on RUclips
@Wakko is Cool yes ur right he is cool
You are a legend for keeping this ancient tradition alive!
I Like how you treat this humbly, and how you don't try to shame computer animators. It's cool to see people use this style, either way. I've made cel paintings myself, and they're a lot of fun to use.
Sweet! I do a lot of digital too but I'm documenting what I'm learning with these cel animations, it's a strange artform but it is pretty fun
@@andrewdude1 That's really cool. I love the way cels are made, It's interesting.
That green screen background idea is genius
I want hand-painted cel animation to come back. We all do. Not because of nostalgia, that is because they are made by people who can draw and paint. Cels and backgrounds are art pieces that when they are better preserved, there is value to them. If it's time consuming to do this, even doing 30 frames a second or anything that can be considered an upgrade, that's why they should hire more people. Maybe 100-500 people to do a 30 frame a second, 10 minute video? Had traditional animation continued, there would have been a cost and time effective way to do this by now.
Spongebob still paints their backgrounds at least
Now THIS is how animation was done for years. No computers (even though you used premiere and a scanner), no fancy software like flash or ToonBoom. Just frames authentically drawn and painted by hand. Yes computers make things more convenient, but it will never come close to traditional animation. You're doing God's work my dude 🤩👍
just curious, in the past when there were no remiere and a scanner, how the film be scanned?
@@johnsontang9560 they used a camera and took a picture of all the scenes, then arranged all the pictures together into a film
the way you animate is so appealing to me and i have no idea why but i love it
i genuinely can’t believe you go thru all this trouble
Cel animation is Coming back.
Heh, I wish...
@@Kodeb8 Don't worry I'm bringing it back.
@@CinemaGatesPictures I wish you the best of luck!
Cel animation is the best animation, I like how the paint glows out of the cel and how good the style looks.
I am Impressed with your Artwork and Cel Animation Tutorial.
My God the amount of patience and effort it takes to do this is staggering.
Thanks for the tip I’ll be sure to come back to this soon, I really have a fondness for traditional animation even if I’m not great at it but this is a nice guide to more than just making a cell itself, the animation at the end was also really charming
That background music you have there sounds like I'm watching an old VHS tape From like some sort of employment office, or job you know where they kind of sit you for an interview and they make you watch these old videos of how to properly work and safety concern stuff and then the same videos have music that sounds almost like this it's so old fashioned. But it's also nostalgic feeling And a good sign that you're getting old and becoming one of those dinosaurs people. But you were able to just pop it in there without a second thought goes to show how young you really are. However Because this is a tutorial it pretty much fits the narrative of it this is the type of music you will hear in tutorials anyways or music meant for it! It's just Feels like it got to sound old fashioned and daunting.
Very interesting! Your way of explaining is clear and easy to follow, keep it up
Neat! I’m planning on doing a cel animated project and this really helps. :)
I love your animations are cool
thanks for sharing your process! cool cartoons!
this is a cool technique, it looks pretty much indistinguishable from "proper" cel animation (and you are still actually painting cels) but it's much easier because you do all the compositing digitally and don't have to worry about getting the camera set up right. i've done a similar technique where instead of tracing the drawings in ink onto cels i traced them in ink directly on the paper and colored them with markers. after scanning the papers i would remove the white backgrounds with the magic wand tool and then layer them in my video editor just like you did. it creates a very different look because instead of the muted colors and the separation of layers you get the grain from the paper and the marker coloring. your method looks awesome though and i'll definitely have to pick up some overhead projector sheets and try it out sometime
looks so cool!
The dat weasel and rahul crossover we needed
How cool! Thanks for sharing! :)
This is really cool man!
Ah man that's Awesome! I'm not Truly an Artist, but I think I would like to try and pull this off.🤔 Thanks for the great video!👍😉🇨🇦
great job 👏🏻👏🏻🎬😍👍🏻 i really love it
Really great animation keep going
this is awesome
You are awesome dude
excellent stuff
I'm so late to this but looks like you could use one of those gloves that manga authors wear to stop smudges. I don't know their real name but I googled 'mangaka glove' and it's those - like they only cover half your hand so you can still grip your drawing tools :) love your channel!
Good work bro!
I don’t think anyone could have explained this better
pretty cooool
Good job!!!
Very cool, and interesting:-)
Very cool
4:11 Ma boi got swag
Good job!
I love how jiggly cel animation can be sometimes, It's impossible to trace something the exact same way every single time, No human has a perfectly steady hand, I wonder how Disney was able to make Their outlines consistent?
I think Disney just did alot of frames per second so it looks smoother
God I love cel animation
I actually miss this type of animation a lot because what I can remember is that all the great shows use cel animation like spongebob.
5:59 Looks like a 70s or 80s Clip, If you Put a VHS Effect with a Program Called "Uber NTSC QT Edition 3000" Will Be 459345673463407% More Nostalgic!
very cute
I've been really interested into animation lately, and cel animation is weirdly more affordable to me than animation programs, other than the light table, the rest is really affordable (I discovered the cels are used for baking here in Brazil, so instead of buying 10 cels for 14 dollars, I can buy 20 acetete sheets for 20 reais (5 times les valuable than the dollar, yup, 20 dollars is basically 100) I'll learn more and I'll see what I can do
COOOOL
Cool tutorial I’m working on a Homemade Cel Animation Show I’m just working on the intro
Can you make a tutorial on how to draw backgrounds and gabe workman
How is music called? I heard it in a lots of vids and I kinda like it
Great tutorial for real though!
Good animation
Could you do a tutorial on background scrolling?
TheLegend27 of youtube animating
I like that one it went viral lol
i might use hand drawn animation. but it would take tones of work. so should i ink and paint it myself. or get my sister to do so
hey question what kind of plastic film paper you use for your animation?
Hello, will there be an alternative for transparent paper? In my country they do not sell this material :(
Personally for me, I would digitally color it in because I don’t have any of the cels. I only have paper, sharpie, and a scanner
How did dragon ball do 3 tone shading with cell animation. This is crazy
I see you painted the cels how i suggested
Can I paint with markers instead? Great job.
Have you ever tried using those drawing gloves that cover the paper side of your hand? Or is the fabric on those wrong?
Tee Jay no I haven’t that sounds pretty nice tho
great video and animation. what's the outro music from?
jack thanks I can’t remember 1920s stock music
Why not use clothes hanger pegs to hold the cel with the paper, or clips?
Cactus I’ll try that!
what is the soundtrack to this video?
i like the soundtrack as well..is it your own music ? where can i get such tracks ?
Ron Abraham it’s Kmart music from the 70s
Can you wash the cels off and reuse them like they did back during the 40's?
Cactus never have but I suppose it’s possible I think it would be hard to wash the paint pen off
Is it possible to buy these printer slides and just take photos of the slides with my phone? I understand lighting will be hard but.
What's the beginning music?
Okay my goal is set, now time to set it in action. Peace ✌🏻
How is it going
@@Clipster77
Slow. I've mostly been occupied with work.
I'm trying to set up a little workshop in the garage, but again it's going slow.
Well try to do it as much as you can
@@Clipster77
Thank you that's very kind.
whats the point of cel animating if u will then fully manipulate in after effects - like either get the full feel from purely hand mechanics or use a wacom and directly draw in digital - u jus now lost the hand feel yet still took the disadvangate of manually doin it - like a loss loss -
What happens if you put the cels in the scanner without a green screen or any background but only the painted cel? Would everything be transparent but the actual paint or would there just be some kind of dark background behind the paint?
Ya the scanner background will just show up white from my experience
Ghost in the Shell 1995 used that method of putting transparent cels without any background into a computer scanner.
What is the music in the background?
Kmart muzak
Music? 3:40
5:58
why are you so cute
I don't like to be that guy but you should watch your arcs man. The kick breaks the arc for a frame and the movement is a bit wonky. Other than that, it really impresses me that you animate like this, I feel like if you made a big project on cels it would stand out for sure from the rest. Are you planning something like that?
this rules, man. that's a like
also, I was mackin' on an app' while watching & yr bite synchronized with mine, so we're officially married in 13 states (& the Virgin Islands)
5 stars
I feel like this was from the early 90s
3:37 song?
It’s Kmart Muzak
You do know you can just stack the cels on top of each other without having to green screen them. Or is it because of them making the background blurry?
Slayer of Guys Yeah when I stack them they can be blurry with a lot of layers or wiggle too much in the scanner could be because of lofi process but I found the green screen is a nice trick
@@andrewdude1is there a way to do it without a green screen without getting the background blurry? (Lighting? Camera angle? Laminate before use?) Thanks for any feedback made.
@@jimbobsclayworld2439 ya there’s another tutorial on this channel where I photograph them instead of scanning
@@andrewdude1 thanks for letting me know! : )
Didn’t cup head use this?
Yeah
Can you get rid of the auto-generated chapters please?
Jesus
Unlike disney's 2d cartoon, the animation is bad!!!
Speaking as someone who only works traditionally and has a very big intrest in animation, I have to say your video was great! I like digital animation, but the colors are too saturated in my opinion. Thanks for the links, man! I'll bookmark them in case I need supplies, your a true inspiration.
