Dude, every time someone asks me why I still watch old cartoons, like all theatrical shorts by Disney/Warner/MGM (and others), like... it's art. The amount of work that went into any 6-7minute long short is amazing. Not only the plotting/writing/conceptualizing/gags/etc, but the actual drawing, inking, painting and filming. Heck, the organizing of the cells themselves, those sheets they used, they needed to label each cell and know the order to film them in, etc. It's baffling how most people don't even know how these things were made. They are a true art form.

It’s more challenging and a creative challenge, like that always creates good art.
Which is why i think old animated stuff generally was so much better, because
      1. aesthetically it just was more beautiful because it wasn’t too clean or cheap
      2. it challenged the artist, they literally didn’t have much access to digital programs and shit to copy paste stuff. Or loose the little nooks n crannies and detail.
      It didn’t loose the ✨Aesthetic✨
While it is more expensive and a pain in the ass, it in the long term created SO Much better art.
      Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust,
Street Fighter, Old Superhero Cartoons, old Family Guy, Old Ghibli movies, old Anime.
They all were so much, more unique Because of Cel shading.

Cel animation has a very specific roughness that can’t be replicated with digital animation. The imperfections like cel shadows and rough imperfect xerox lines.

    • @BlackbeltHitoshi
      @BlackbeltHitoshi 5 месяцев назад +1

Can't you just put cel shadows and rough imperfect Xerox lines in each frame while drawing digitally?

Nice work! It’s cool to see your experimentation with a medium that’s not used as much anymore.
Great tip about the cheaper acrylic paint puddling better. I’ve been making some cels myself, and expensive acrylic doesn’t puddle nearly that nicely.

  • @pianoatthirty

I LOVE this. Thank you for keeping this process alive! Both the minor imperfections and the energy that goes into each frame can really be felt and is something you just can’t achieve with digital. I hope you inspire many others to do the same.

Hey Dude1, I just watched The Secret of NIMH again and it inspired me to create some cell animations of my own. This is the first video I'm watching on how to do it and a lot of the technique shown here can easily be translated to using software to make cell-style animations using only simple software. That is, if someone wanted to get into making animations but only have access to a PC.

Hi, just wanted to share that I think the painting technique is called floating because cel animators would actually float the paintbrush above the cel sheet and let the paint flow down. This is, like you say, to achieve a brushless finish. There are tricks to thin out the paint so it flows better too, it's cool that you figured out the cheaper stuff is good for this.
Anyways, thanks for sharing. Very instructive and straight to the point video.

Great video dude! I’m pretty new to animation but I’m training myself to do it. I really dig the old school style and I do pretty much digital only animation wich is cool but I prefer the old way. Once my animation studio is open this is what we’re gonna do. I’m just curious on a lot of it. Like how to get the hole punched paper and all that stuff. It would mean a lot if you could make a video or somthing on more detail about how to do this stuff

If you want to take it another step further, and a step back in time, get yourself a super 8 or 16mm movie camera that lets you take one picture at a time and capture it on film. Maybe even on reversal film so you can project the finished animation back the old fashioned way.
That was my first thought, anyway. I have a 16mm camera with that capability and totally want to try this.
