- There has been much debate on what flipping a sample actual is. In this video, I'll be providing you with my perspective on the difference between using a sample loop, flipping a sample and interpolating a sample. Feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

I assumed flipping a beat is like flipping a car. Taking something that exists, changing it, then putting it back out on the market. 😆
Dad Joke… but weirdly accurate lol 😆
WOW!! i was literally blown away by that thank you lord sample flip! would love to see more of your process flipping that
I’m glad that you enjoyed this video. I do have a played for a my series called #SAMPLESUNDAYS where I flip samples… (#SampleSundays 🎛🎚🎧
ruclips.net/p/PLS2MCznbYOZ38IVSMqh0Vd47J_bTEXJC- ) but I can create some video where I go about more in depth with process.
@@DaBlackMicTV dope, thank you! will def check it out
Finally someone addressing "interpolating" and not what RUclips search algorithm interprets as "interpretation". Then we get videos about copyright infringement, lol.
Right! Lol. I’m glad you enjoyed it… Thanks for watching. 🙏🏿
This makes so much sense thank you
You’re very welcome 🙏🏿
I subscribed because that Lift every voice was something I've always heard about but didn't know that Ed Sheeran used it, wow. mind blown, but thanks for that info
That Ed Shereen interpolation was crazy to me fr. Thanks for the Sub & the comments bro… more info to come.
words from the wise 💎🤲
Yessuh… Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏🏿
keepn it 100 i like to do all 3 just depending on wat im feeln or hearing at that time
YEAH! Something u have to switch it up because we all are inspired in different ways in different degree at any given time. Keep Going!
This video explained everything so well and I love that you used examples, thank you💜
You’re so welcome. I’m glad that you enjoyed the video and it resonated 🙏🏿
Perfect explanation champ!
Glad you think so!… thanks for watching 🙏🏿
The intro got my sub, the content is gonna get the likes.
Aayyyyyyyreeee 💪🏿
“Flipping A Sample” is basically what you said, “Flipping it on its head” or just flipping it around.
Basically taking it apart & reconstructing it into a new arrangement using only the elements of the sample itself.
Right!
Thank you this is super helpful.
Glad it was helpful! & I could be of service
Incredible video, brethren 🙏🏼✊🏼💯
As 4 the form of sampling love 2 use,
it's either chop & flip it into somethin' completely different or interpolation.
I like the latter, 'cause of the ability
of bein' able 2 learn the chords,
& possibly flip it by re-voicing them
or something of that effect.
My main thing either way
is 2 set the tone where the lyrics
that accompany can resonate
that much more.
The beautiful of sampling is perspective from something we all hear
my favorite interpolation is BasicBitchTearGas by Jpagmafia. the orignal song was no scrubs by TLC
I listened to the record “BasicBitchTearGas” and although it includes a lot of the “No Scrubs” lyrics it contains none of the musical composition; original key & chord progression making it unrecognizable. So this wouldn’t be considered an interpolation rather than a reimagined cover of “No Scrubs”
This whole video is a groove. Dope content.
Thanks my brother 🙏🏿
You Earned a new sub, love this video
Thanks for subbing 🙌🏿
Love the content my guy! Keep bangin!
Thanks my G… I appreciate that & I most certainly will 💪🏿
In the beginning i started looping a sample, now i love to flip it around 😅 the results of it are on my page 😊
Amen… thank you for coming to the page however you got here. I hope to inspire you in the future.
Cool vid. No matter how much i try to learn strings or keys i can't help but sample all these records
Thanks man... Sampling is everything to me lol. It is the essence of my production. I challenge myself whenever I can to learn more and play more but there has always been something about it for me.
@@DaBlackMicTV i feel you . Something about taking what someone did 30 years ago ( or whenever) and flipping it, even if your just looping it. The DJ in us, cause we djs first, (I'm assuming) still putting people on music they may not know or never heard in the same way.. it's magic.
Yea man, but reinventing the wheel, when you turn something the everyone know into a different vibe that most wouldn’t have through of feels like nirvana to me
@@DaBlackMicTV word. 💯 Enjoying the content man.
@@SauceSoundz much appreciated 🙏🏿
I instantly subscribed loved the break down.
Aaaayyee I love that, Thanks 🙏🏿
The second part of "90210" by travis scott was a sample from the track "itinerario romantico" by Rigol, but funny enough, in "bigger thën everything" by Yeat, BNYX interpolated the same track travis scott used in 90210...itinerario romantico basically gave us two crazy good songs lmao
wow had no idea
I gotta like into the Yeat track song to peep the interpolation… I love stuff like this
@@DaBlackMicTV Swear I live for little facts like that. Cause the mean so much!
@@kendalstokes8358 word up
A classic interpolation of a song that i think most of us recognize is Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio, interpolating Pastime Paradise by Stevie Wonder. Great songs.
That’s a straight up sample with additional instrumentation played on top to make it feel more dynamic… if u listen u can hear, Stevie’s snare at the beginning
This video so dope and understandable it made me subscribe
Awww man I really appreciate that & I’ve glad that You received value from it 🙏🏿
This is a dope video!!!🫡
I’m truly glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for the explanation
Glad it was helpful! 🙏🏿
Boldy James - Bentayga (Prod by Jay Versace) sampled The Imperial Wonders - Once in a Lifetime love pt-1
My goodness that sample is crazy
just heard No Days Off...that's a nice ass flip!
Thanks my G… most wouldn’t even understand where the sample came from. But that the fun part to me lol
Oh, dope video by the way.
💪🏽👑💯 SUBSCRIBED
Awesome! Thank you!
J Dilla and Madlib are the godfathers of flipping samples
Yeah but there are so many others, Bink, Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, DJ Scratch, Easy Mo Bee to name a few
Just like you said
🙏🏿 Thanks for watching
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for taking the time to comment and like 👍🏿
Quick question, if I sing a melody but change the lyircs. Like let's say singing "don't go chasing waterfalls..." but change waterfalls and some of the other lyrics. I'd that still interpolation?
The usage of the melody would be considered the top-line vs the usage of the music (in variants using chord progressions, sounds, key etc) would be more-so considered an interpolation
Thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching. 🙏🏿
Dope!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Much appreciate 🙏🏿
dope channel!
Appreciate it! Thanks for checking it out
I think you're on FB and we were talking about which MPC I should get, but, while I love this clip...why are you giving out secrets, lol
Thanks man. Knowledge is only effective in the hands of the right people who deserve it, by putting it out the right ones will receive it. Now the world will continue to have amazing music.
@@DaBlackMicTV Good point bro, moving along, much love, :)
@@bronzkhrome4024 🙏🏿❤️
It probably derives from the term “flipping the script”.
Maybe? 🤔… I was thinking “flipping _____ on its head” meaning to treat the present “something” (sample) totally different
What do you think of DJ Shadow's Endtroducing.....?
Tbh I’m not family BUT I did put it on my watch Later list 👌🏿Thanks for the inadvertent recommendation
Great video! Anyone here has the link for the songs he mentioned in the video?
Much appreciated 🙏🏿
So let’s get this straight, say I took this song from a video game and I did a replay/interpolation of it from memory. No sampling but it sounds very similar (the midi). Then I make a beat out of it (the beat melody SOUNDS are different than the original song sounds anyway). Would that song get copyrighted in anyway if the beat has the same melody, but it wasn’t sampled?
Technically it’s still an interpolation if the progression and melody are exactly the same. But if u deviate from the original composition “enough” (how much idk) it may not be noticed but the more blatant (same sound same tempo same melody line) the more likely it would be to be discovered.
@@DaBlackMicTV yeah so if you could imagine it’s basically just a lead that’s the same (if you could imagine just some synth lead). It’s only in the outro but the chords underneath it are made from scratch (so they aren’t exactly the same). But the tempo is different , sounds are very different, it’s just that one melody line. I’d assume I sound to be in the clear?
@@Breezyfl0w_official with so many different layers and changes it does make it difficult to make a definitive claim; unless you took a main med line that is sold known and ridiculously blatant. Otherwise, the influence is just known between you and God… And a few suspicious forensic audio files lol
@@DaBlackMicTV thats so true you take care man😂
The Barney theme song “I love you” is an interpolation of another childhood song “Nick Nack Patty wack give a dog a bone” - 😂 seriously though great video explaining everything. I subbed…
Much appreciated… I’m really going to listen to those to compare. That’s crazy if so, but then again besides baby shark there’s aren’t too many contemporary children’s song that ain’t borrowing from other existing melody’s
Im subscriber 2 thousand 7 hundeed and something. Will be great to see your channel gorow. We all should lift up each others channels etc. 1 up . Music is the UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE. I wonder how we sounded in Babylonian days when mankind spoke the same tongue?? Music must had been incredible. Like the tower of Bable was stopped only after mankind had become confused. I think its said that mens tongues became twisted and they no longer could communicate! That sounds like some illustrations of the past. No matter how inlightened the Egyptian and African countries and Indian continents pre historical civilizations were far beyond what we understand now yet idk if i would rather go back in time and enjoy the salt of the earth. The air and all the tastes and smells and wildlife I am glad that we have these technologies im not Matieralistic but these smart phones and all the analog devices before it have enhanced our way of expression. Do you work with analog drum machines and triggers for looping
Man, I truly appreciate your subscription… Adding and becoming a part of the community. My gear of choice tends to be a couple of drum machines mainly the MPC Live 2, K.O. II & O.P. 1…. Outside of that, I’m using Ableton and sometimes FL studio. Although I’m very curious as to how the music was in Babylonian times I really enjoy the electricity of now lol
I like to flip
Me too! Not with my body but with these samples 😁✌🏿
and I like to flip a sample. I've reversed samples as well are reinterpreted them, it's just how I love to do my shit, :) right now chopping up samples while awaiting my MPC Live, :)
That’s what I’m talking about get them samples ready for that MPC. U ready to go crazy lol
Curren$y & The Alchemist - Jodeci Tape sounds like Stevie Wonder's You Will Know. So i guess that's an interpolation?
🤣🤣🤣 Good Ear, it is similar to the vibe of Stevie but the 3rd & 4th bars are a bit different on the Curren$y joint
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Here is a great example of interpolating a sample. Re-creating samples: Nu:Tone In The Studio With Future Music. ruclips.net/video/TPPhWcoOSMY/видео.html
Thanks for the recommendation 🙏🏿
Lift every voice and sing ?? The level of appropriation is just fucking unreal !!!
They got Beyoncé on the remix so I guess they thought that made it betta 🤷🏿♂️
J Dilla.
He is one of my favorite sample flippers 🤴🏿
