    great info! I dont use MDF for several reasons but I learned something new and I might have to consider it for future projects.

      Hi guys, the mrmdf is also lower in cfcs and not as harmful, it's also denser and machines so much better. If your going to be painting a project and want a great finish I can't think of anything better to use. 😊

      Awesome Davy, if a shelf is going to get a battering I'd put a pine edge on it about 10 or 15mm but if it's light use it should be fine. 😊 Wouldn't bother with iron on edge banding though, defo.

    The key take away here seems to be "good quality" and I have to agree. Probably the most important bit in my opinion is the MR MDF, it seems to make a huge difference.

    • @karlpopewoodcraft

      Hi Dirk, I'd definitely like to use an air sprayer and compressor, that can leave a beautiful finish. I definitely wouldn't use spray cans though I've failed using these before terribly. 😊

    I am painting a larger sheving unit made of MDF. I've got a acrylic sealing primer and acrylic paint but am planning to use a paint sprayer. If I need to thin out the primer or paint, I guess I would avoid water and use a paint thinner?

    • @karlpopewoodcraft
      @karlpopewoodcraft  3 года назад

      Hi mate if you are using acrylic paint then water is perfect for thinning.

    • @karlpopewoodcraft
      @karlpopewoodcraft  3 года назад +1

      Hi Mike no I haven't unfortunately, I know eggshell works great but that's all I've used really, oh and spray cans but they where terrible on mdf edges for me.

  • @richarddodd9770
    @richarddodd9770 3 года назад

    I have always found painting the MDF edges requires at least 6 light coats of paint consisting of primer, undercoat and the final paint finish. I have even tried MDF sealer before painting the edges, which being water based has caused the edges to swell. I think in future, as you have suggested I will use MR MDF. Is MR MDF much more expensive than just normal MDF? Don’t think I have seen MR MDF in B&Q where I normally by 8x4fft sheets. I really enjoy your content as you keep it pretty simple, and the end result is to a high standard, without the need for really expensive equipment.

    • @karlpopewoodcraft
      @karlpopewoodcraft  3 года назад

      Firstly thank you Richard I really appreciate your feedback. Well I pay £35 for a sheet of 18mm MRMDF and the regular brown mdf is £25 so definitely more expensive but 100% worth it in my opinion, time saved on preparation, painting sanding ext. You will need to purchase it from your local wood yard where the tradesmen go not the DIY shops. Hope this helps Richard 😊
