  • For special commemorations, photo charters and just for fun, many locomotives that met with the cutters torch have been recreated in preservation.
    We take a look at Bulleid Light Pacifics 34052 Lord Dowling (34046 Braunton) renamed to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, 7800 Torquay Manor & 7825 Lechlade Manor (7822) recreated for a Llangollen 1960s Weekend, 6141 (4141), 5026 Criccieth Castle, 4492 Dominion of New Zealand (4494 Bittern), 44860 (45337), 45066 & 45049 (45428), 52345 (52322), 1251 Oliver Bury (61264), 80007 (80072), 75001 (76079), 80096 (80072), 80043 (80072), Hurricane (Whiston) and NCB 35 (65).
Some recreations are more appropriate than others, while there were differences in Jubilees 45699 Galatea and 45562 Alberta, Galatea contains many parts that where originally on Alberta.
48121 (48624), 44814 (45305) and 47203 (47406) all recreated at the Great Central Railway's Woodford Halse Commemorative Gala.
34098 Templecombe (34053 Sir Kieth Park) all recreated at a West Somerset Railway S&D Celebration.
Two locomotives that feature are 5775 (7714) and 92220 Evening Star (922124), while both locomotives survive into preservation with both out of traffic (the 9F in particular unlikely to ever steam again), the opportunity was taken to renumber the Pannier for the Worth Valley's 50th Anniversary Gala, while the opportunity was taken to renumber 92214 as the last 9F on a series of occasions, with the 9F already repainted into Brunswick Green, a livery only carried by Evening Star.
Last but by no means least is Ffestiniog Railway's Single Fairlie Taliesin. A complete new build recreating a long scrapped locomotive. While just missing out on my 21st Century Locomotives special ( • Steam Locomotives of t... ) being completed in 1999.

Isn't it strange how much the character and appearance of a locomotive is changed by simply swapping names
    and numbers?

I never forgave BR(WR) for transferring the nameplates and plaque (GeorgeV drove Windsor Castle on a visit to Swindon Works) over to Bristol Castle for GeorgeVI's funeral. Windsor Castle had been undergoing repairs. The plates and commemorative plaque were never restored and the BR-built ex-Bristol Castle retained the false identity and stating that Geo.V had driven 'this engine'. These swaps are pretty meaningless, but they doubtless generate revenue.

@@johnjephcote7636 The thing is when locos went in for general repair in steam days, boiler swaps took place, and all manner of parts could be replaced from tenders to cabs to driving wheels. So to say one loco had a single identity is also pretty meaningless.

@@SouRwy4501Productions Unless you count William Staniers ‘Hooter’ Whistles as pipsqueak, most all british engines have them, to separate from the american locos, and i prefer them.
Also USA S160s have USA Whistles (I Believe)
