What a deal! I've never seen anyone drive such a hard bargain on a gift! I'm going to take a wild guess that SELDON has made a remarkably brilliant marketing move in gifting the 2 greatest Warriors on RUclips with an astonishingly useful and easy to install and universally helpful sailing tool as an electric winch! I thought it was nice of Carly to go ahead and let you install it to get you some experience! 😄 You didn't say how Carly got the offer from SELDON but I think we know! Hank arranged it!
I think I might have ground down the nubs on the anti-skid pad under the winch so the winch could be sealed to it so water doesn't run under it. I didn't see the wire hole get caulked so water could run down the wires, or it could just accumulate under the winch and dust would turn into dirt then mud.
It didn't look like the overhead panel that would cover the bottom of the winch would fit snug up against the underside, so the switches protruding down below wouldn't be a problem. If the bimini is ever off when the rains come in, just blow some air under the winch with a straw and see if water is accumulating under it. Then I suppose you could then just caulk around the winch.
If you ever get back to SELDON, ask if they could give an explanation about free-standing cylindrical masts! I think that would to be interesting!

Excellent video again guys! Just a word of caution, there may be a problem in the inherent strength of the support for the winch. Embedding the aluminium plate into the core, rather than epoxying the initial drilled holes and then placing the plate under this, may have weakened the structure. The effect is that all the forces are now being placed on the upper fibreglass layer only. The strength of the original construction is by virtue of the use of a core with a layer of fibreglass above and below. Normally, a winch is installed on a deck with large washers, or spreader plate, that refers the forces to the full thickness of the deck. Also, would suggest that the rubber is removed from underneath to ensure a firm surface or you may get movement in the bolts. Huge forces can be generated by electric winches (we have 3 on our Amel), so I advise caution as to the mounting methods employed. Sorry to put a dampener on an excellent video.

Agree with above. An alternative approach is to epoxy a sheet of 1/4" Garolite (G10) to the lower fiberglass skin, then fill the old voids and plugs for the new machine screws from above with un-thickened epoxy & chopped glass fibers, and re-drill the holes. Attach with extra-thick fender washers. Super strong.

In case of electric/electronic failure, you will be out of winch. My main use is to hoist my 60 kg main sail. To proper adjust/fine tune the tension, I also use the 'mechanical' handle.

But at east marine here i found the e wincher 2 electric winch handle. For 2,600 usd. I bought it and i love it. Its made all 6 winches on the boat electric. It lifts the 150 kg inflatable into the davits w zero problems, furls the jib in 30 knots, and does it all day long on 1 charge. More like 5 days on a charge.
I use it every day for a year and its been awesome.
On a bigger boat above 60 feet i dont think e wincher will be as usefull.

Another excellent video. I installed the E40i last year and I agree it was easy. It is pricey if I’m honest but we love it regardless. My challenge is on our Bavaria has a moulded ceiling so we have to go wire fishing for every install in those locations (so we try not too. ;-). ). I’m interested that you guys and Mads feel it’s worthwhile with electric winches when you are still young. It was killing my back winching in that location - so a real help, plus I’m more willing to trim with the extra help. But regardless makes me happy to see also young people fitting such help (and I feel less old if only for a moment)

It would be wrong to say that we needed the winch, we are indeed still young and able, but it was offered to us for free, plus we have a lot of power of Cadoha now with our lithium bank and solar, so didn’t see the harm. I feel like it’s an improvement on what was there, certainly in terms of fitting anyway 🙏🙏⛵️😬

One of the first youtubers I've seen that's done mastic sealing correctly, well done. i.e. lightly tightening the screws until the mastic has had time to set and then tightening fully. I've seen too many times people applying mastic and then winding the screws up tight before the mastic has had chance to set squidging out out of the side and reducing the depth and effectiveness of the seal. Also use of Duralac gets a 👍Belt 'n' braces.

I always put a grommet in any metal so that wires do not wear with the ship motion and create a short circuit. Where I have to run wires through metal tubes, I try to use the irrigation plastic pipe which is thin-walled, and push it through the pipes first. This happened in the bimini and solar panel racks.

Nice video, personally i would have removed the Treadmaster non slip from under the winch to get a better seal. Also always if you can apply fibreglass or epoxy onto a previous layer that has not completely cured, this way you get a far stronger chemical bond rather than a just mechanical bond. Personally I would put the box under the overhead much less noticable, also use several layers to make a 'plywood' rather than a box, but I'm sure it must be annoying when people critisise your work. We really enjoy your videos, so well done and keep it up.

And there is no mechanical backup for when you run out of power - if it has a 100amp breaker in the supply feed then it’s going to draw 50-60A, may be more on a real load, how long will that last on most boats House bank?

    • @CadohaAdventures
      @CadohaAdventures 2 года назад +2

Well spotted there. Well, I don't think there's much danger of us entering Cadoha into a race any time soon, but you're right, there is no way to manually operate it, so in that case you need to piggy back it off of a manual winch in such a circumstance.

    • @milesbuckhurst504

@@CadohaAdventures that’s also why Seldén also recommend not replacing all winches with this type. By the way take care if winching someone up the mast. It is not recommended to use power winches for that because if it jams on, a foot getting caught in rigging or similar would be a nasty accident. With that in mind I’m sure careful use could be considered (just not recommended)

I looked at this when I replaced all my winches recently. I sail single handed sometimes and if you hurt yourself, you still need to be able to grind winches. I decided against it because should you need a powered winch, an electric handle turns all your winches into powered for a fraction of the cost, and without the installation headache.

I have to say that the aluminium threads are a major weak point in your installation. You should turn the bolts upside down, add a large thick steel washer to bottom for better load spread and then add a washer and nut to the top. Or add a washer and nut to the bottom (but I guess you don't have room). It will probably be fine, but I would rather have these loads going into hard steel than soft ali.

Interesting. I was excited until I looked at the Selden E40i and realized it was hard to justify the much great (160%) cost. That is, the Defender costs compared to a Lewmar 40EST at $2800 vs the Selden E40i $2800 + PSU $740 + ContPack $800 = $4,340. Ouch! I want an electric halyard winch for my cabin top, and it would be nice not to have the motor seen from below, it not that much space nor critical. That said, if it the cost was closer to $2800 + PSU/CP $800, then I would be tempted. Sorry, I'm just try to be honest.

Unless I missed it, you do not discuss WHY an electric winch in that location is an improvement. It appears that your starb'd coachroof winch serves just one line - is that your main sheet? Mainsheet loads should not be a significant challenge on a 38' sloop. And what about redundancy, when the the electrical winch operation (multiple points of failure) lets you down during critical conditions, when the loads will be highest.

You probably did not need that massive aluminum plate, the way it’s in bedded in the structure does not really add much strength as it is just basically an extension of the winch and only as good as how it’s attached to the boat, that has not changed very much (3 layers). I would just have filled out that void with epoxy and fibers and be done with it.

Did you and Mads plan this Selden doubleheader today? If so, well done! One might ask why does the Selden E40i have multiple sides in lieu of a round part that has contact with the boat lines? My guess is that as the line contacts the E40i there is actually more surface area in contact with the line, not to mention the corners of the multiple plates have greater holding power without causing chafe. Yeah, picture a plan view (looking down from the top) of a dodecahedron versus a circle. One other observation, when shining a flashlight (torch) on the mirror-like body of the E40i at night, then powering it to rotate, you have the making of a disco chandelier that could serve your party quite nicely. Hmmm... :¬) Webhead USA

No, I was actually meant to have my video out weeks ago, but the install kept calling for things that I didn’t have, then I was working away a lot, after that I edited all of our footage and realised I had bits missing and had to re-shoot some shots for the story, and eventually it took getting Covid to sit and finish it.
So it’s just by pure chance that Mads is super efficient and works well in real time and I was a bit slow that led to the happy accident of similarly timed release dates for the winch.

The principle of vertical ridges rather than a round winch drum is fundamental to Andersen Winches. I believe that rather than friction between the line and the drum, the friction is internal to the braid where the line bends over each ridge.
