Pirates, by definition, were criminals. In the Golden Age of Piracy, between 1650 and 1720, the law was very clear on what punishment would befall someone convicted of piracy and that was punishment was hanging by the neck until death. Depending on what the pirate was caught doing and where would change what the pirate was accused of and what punishment he would receive. For example, if a pirate was caught stealing on land he may end up getting whipped or spending some time in the pillory.

some of them endured months of lashings? that's horrific. I wonder what would have been going through their minds and how they felt about their crew mates afterwards
Somehow, my mom forcing me to eat veggies in my youth doesn't seem like such a hard punishment anymore.
One of the worst offences onboard ship? Smoking in the powder room.

"The cat's out of the bag." (meaning that the cat of nine tails has been taken out of its carry bag and it's lashes for you.) Thanks for clearing that up.....
This channel deserves way more subscribers.
It must have been so much fun, those good old days.
You could get rich, in the West, you know? Pots full of gold!
@@voornaam3191 Bro, how old r u?

Gruesome and terrible.
Human beings can be so amazingly cruel.
Yeah holy shit, months of flogging...
Some very fascinating, grizzly details.
Pls keep doing this content
You know, this all started months ago with Sopranos clips. Really cool RUclips algorithm find.

Thanks Mike glad you like the videos!
Black Sails having pirates with Australian accents has triggered my inner historian I have enjoyed your series of pirate histories immensely
Gratsaa great video!
Had no interesti n pirates but I'm going through these videos. It's interesting to learn where some sayings come from. Given how boating and shipping have been and still are one of the most important things we do, it makes sense a lot of our phrases originate there.
very good vid, and extremely intresting. we dont really learn anything about pirates at school etc, its like a uknck time for most of us
up to 1978 in Victoria, flogging was still a punishment. Last used in 1955, a guy called Rattan who was in Pentridge for life without parole and he attacked a prison guard and the judge said “what am I going to do with you?”.
The flogging triangle can still be seen in a museum, Old Melbourne Jail, I think. The sign said it was On LOAN.
It is vlogging, today?
@@voornaam3191 vlogging a dead horse
Fascinating! 👍🏻
Cool video! Could you perhaps make a video on quartermasters? Who were they, what was their role, etc?
Eventually I hope to do that!
The pacing and voice are obviously different but this channel has the vibe of a Ken Burns documentary. Thats about as big a compliment I can give IMO.
Thanks Matt glad you like the videos!

Every great story includes pirates
After watching this. It is good reason why I would never be a pirate. Argghhh great video.
There were numerous disadvantages being a pirate. Were there any advantages, eg, women, grog, gold, pieces of 8, travel to exotic places, diamonds, time to reflect?
Discipline was far less severe on pirate ships compared to those in a navy. Many pirate ships operated as a semi-democracy, with men electing their officers and captains from among their fellows.
The opportunities for enriching oneself through piracy were also much more lucrative than service on a naval vessel. Sailors on a naval ship would win some prize money if they captured an enemy ship in wartime, but in peacetime they would often be laid off or would only be paid the meagre base wages for sailors in those times.
The downsides were they could invariably expect to be executed upon capture, the threat of which was constant for any pirate crew. By the mid 1700's the naval forces of France and especially Britain were strong enough that pirates were becoming fewer and further inbetween.
Love ❤️ pirates 🏴☠️
Love the symbolism in gallows in the tide. But good God keelhauling sounds horrific.
That it does!
Keelhauling is absolutely ghastly!
🌊💙🌊
I lived up the street from where they hung captain Kidd. Whapping near St Katherines dock.
marooned mateeee
If 9 strands are on the flogging whip and the saying goes -- "The cat is out of the bag," then does that also translate to criminals (as piracy is viewed in this light) who make it difficult to surpass them because they are hiding behind you as you hold your tongue or are otherwise unable to speak out in accord? This must be a way to read deviance?
Ah, the good old days . . .
Oh....
The Pirate code is more a set o guidelines!
"Put him in the bed with the captain's daughter
Early in the morning!"
Yo ho yo ho it's a pirate's life for me.
Preposterous. Offense taken.🏴☠
The king and his men stole the queen from her bed
And bound her in her bones
The seas be ours and by the powers
Where we will, we'll roam
Yo-ho, all together
Hoist the colors high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die
Gregor Justin Verbinski / Hans Zimmer / Ted Andrew Elliott / Terry Rossio
I wish I could be a pirate
The Jack daw
And people say we are cruel in 2022.
Id rather die than get captured.
So what finally happened to Blue Beard and Jon La Foote?
The same laws should apply to politicians.
I'm now of the belief Pirates were only irate Captains of the bs from the bureaucrates.
Thanks. What happened to Henry Avery?
Nothing verifiable about Every after 1696.
@@ThePiratesPort I thought so. Most of the men who sailed with him were arrested and hanged for piracy by the English authorities in New England. Mainly Massachusetts and Connecticut. Rhode Island's different altogether.
AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
Bring it all back. I bet crime rates would go down 😆
Sepsis will set in with just a very few floggings or caning. Recently in Iran two sisters bailed to Canada but their brother was caught for driving them to the airport. Media in Canada had them bouncing off the plane in their tight, tight western jeans a al Kim Kardashian. Meanwhile, the brother was caned forty times, and died three days later of sepsis.
Comment
We need these kinds of punishment on land.
It's pronounced Jibbet although it is spelled gibbet.
3:07 Back when NO GIRLS ALLOWED was fine. Just look what they took from us
why pirates aren't allowed to bring women on the deck? Did they have certain reasons?
Well, occasionally they were welcomed aboard. Most famous are Anne Bonny and Mary Reed from Calico Jack Rackham's crew. The issue that would have caused a crew to outlaw women onboard would have been the fighting that sort of situation would cause. Pirates agreed to share ALL of what they had with their shipmates and that would have included women. If the man who brought her didn't like that idea violence would almost certainly follow. After all, a group of men out at sea for days or weeks at a time will do just about anything for some alone time with the opposite sex.
No, i didn't enjoyed it. How cruel they were those times.
AAAaarrrrrrrr !!!
