- Tortuga, maties! First settled by hunters and adventurers, this rocky spit of land eventually developed into a nest of French filibusters, until it finally developed into a buccaneer haven that kickstarted the Golden Age of Sea Roving. This was the Kingdom of Jean le Vasseur, an engineer who built himself a fort on the tallest mountain, cut all ties with France, and craved golden tributes from the buccaneers that named his town their home. In this video we will explore the history, geography, economics and social structure of this mythical location in pirate lore.

I live in the Dominican Republic, the Spanish speaking side of La Hispaniola. And my guy, you have no idea how little about piracy is taught in history class.
I have been in 2 different schools and 2 different universities, and the Tortuga Isle is basically even ignored, even if it was a Pirate's safe heaven,literally next door to such important colony
Tortuga has a mystical feel in pirate lore. I'm always amazed at how many pirate festivals or events use Tortuga in their names! I have sailed around Cuba and visited Dominican Republic and Grand Turk. I was never close enough to sight Tortuga on the horizon. I enjoyed your telling of the history of Tortuga!

Great info. I wrote a novel which included pirates and especially maroons, who form a confederacy with southern tribes such as creeks and seminoles. Yr history of early buccaneers is most informative. Much thanks

I'm also preparing a tabletop RPG campaign to play with friends, and you give a lot more in-depth insight than my Wikipedia exploration so far.
I couldn't even find anywhere on wiki where was this goddamn fort on La Tortue. And the oh-so-many articles citing and recycling Exquermellin are a mess. (At least in the french wikipedia. I might not have wandered so much on the english one.)
I also had no idea the european control of the island was so loose until the arrival of Bertrand d'Ogeron. Now I've got a solid track on the atmosphere of restriction the flibustiers might have smelled with his arrival. At least that's what I'm gonna exploit.

Really appreciate your channel man! I've been using your videos together with Wikipedia and "the way of the pirates" etc. for my complete "Golden age of piracy" history from 1715 to 1721 with all the major historical figures and their stories. Your videos are really well made and full of information so thank you! Who knows, maybe I'll end up making a book or something from my writing ;)
Please don't write a book if you base your research on Wikipedia, its a shit site full of false fact. Read actual history books instead. The Golden Age of Piracy has a lot of period sources written by pirates or witnesses that you can find in entire books, in collections, or even online. Just don't use wikipedia
@@GoldandGunpowder don't worry I just use it as a tool to have some foundation where to build on. I don't take anything from Wikipedia as a fact. I've watched a lot of documentaries and read a lot of different sources on online. Wikipedia is only because it's easy access to find some basic info at the start when you don't know yet where to look for, then I usually go search more about different things individually to get more accurate information :)
Have you written anything else or would this be your first book? Did you study history academically?
@@stehfreejesseah7893 atm it has turned out to be more like a loooonnggg movie or TV show script than a book. And no, I've never written any books or studied history academically. This is more just something I'm doing for myself for fun. And at this rate that I've been able to slowly write it, it'll probably be ready in 50 years if I'm lucky lol

Tortuga..was the pirate island....but do you know there was a island call Mona 73.6 km ( 45.7 miles ) west of Puerto Rico whit 200' cliff's and full of natural Caves, wild boars, goat's, iguanas and a hideout for repairs a base from which to raid passing ships....( there's only 2 beach's in mona whit 200' ciff's )...Pirate's like Captain kidd's, Sr. Francis Drake and one of the last pirate's of the caribben ( Puerto rican pirate Roberto cofresi the real inventor of la pina colada some time before 1825 ) were active near Mona...

Hey could u maybe do a video on forts in the Caribbean I always liked the shape of them and wondered why they were stars
Every fort built by Europeans during the 1600s were built like stars to better resist cannon barrages and to make them easier to defend against assaults. If the enemy scaled from one side, you could shoot them from another angle. I won't do a separate video on forts but they will be covered in an upcoming video

Provides the most efficient platform to fire in/from any angle or direction. It is also a very stable polygon that indeed can withstand more damage. Many shots would be forced to hit at angles, which could deflect a lot of force. I can't remember which channel but there's a video on the topic by another expert of the era. Sandrhoman Is his name
POLICE DOG. When HMS Greyhound sighted two ships to the east of Long Island, America, the crew had no idea what dangerous pirates they were tangling with. The ships belonged to the infamous Edward Low and his crew. After an eight - hour battle, the Greyhound was victorious. The pirates were brought to justice in the summer of 1723 when 26 of them were hanged.

In puerto rico west cost...Mona island...a real parate island use by captain kidd's, sr francis Drake and spanish pirate Roberto Cofresi ( one of the last 2 pirates of the golden age of pirates and the inventor of the pina colada back in the end of 1700's and early 1800's )...yes there's a bar in old San juan that said the pina colada was made here in 1963...and the caribe hilton said they have it in the 50's..in the 20's there was a drink made whit pina , coco and run...yes that's a pina colada....but Roberto Cofresi the pirate have it in 1800's ....if you like more inf...look his name and the island of mona in the internet....🏴☠️🍹

It would explain one of the reasons why the Barbary pirate's avoided the western isles of Scotland and didn't take the islanders as slaves, when they traveled through the Atlantic ocean to Iceland
Many of the barbary corsiars where actually Dutch. The Dutch liked the life so much that many converted to islam and took wives from north africa.

the island is too large for all of it to be a single plantation and by the 1710s the island was still in control by the french

John, check the upload date of the video and then check when advanced AI voice modules able to generate audio for RUclips videos became accessible.

AI voices have been used for more than the last two years, and you don't need RUclips-specific AI voice modules to generate an AI voice, do you?
Are you saying that this is not an AI voice? My frustration stems from the fact that so many channels are using AI voices, and it's hard to figure out which is which. It makes me feel like a lot of RUclips content is completely soulless.
My apologies, if I offended you. If it's a real voice, there's a compliment in there, because it's smooth and consistent, which was a sign of professionalism before the scourge of AI voices on RUclips emerged.
