One of the most common questions people ask has to do with the styles of tattoos pirates had. Next to peg legs, earrings, and eye patches the image of a pirate with anchors, dragons, or ships tattooed on their arms is iconic. But did pirates actually get tattoos and, if so, what would they have been like?
Getting inked with a sharpened bone tipped in gunpowder is just about the piratest thing I've ever heard of.
I dont even need to watch the video now, I have the answer. Thank you

The facial tatoo you showed is a moko and comes from New Zealand not Tahiti it has great cultural signifecance and mana ,men had full face tatoos and women chin and lip they must get permission and there are many traditions and rules about how they are appled and how they are worn, hope this info helps.

That Pirates Port accepts Bitcoin is fitting in many ways. 😁 Rebellious, international, fair, non-establishment / no middle men, etc. And hopefully, something that appreciates. Modern day booty if there ever was some.
Great research sir!
Thanks!
Your videos got me interested in pirates. Nice.
That's awesome to hear! Thank you!!
There is a story surrounding sailors having the crucifiction on there backs in order to avoid a flogging as this would be considerd an act of blasphermy to dissfiger said picture, true or not not sure but sounds plausable.
On a related topic, when I served in the US Navy during the early 1970's I recall a couple of crusty sailors who had a propeller tattooed on each butt cheek ... yikes!
Dont get it
@@mannyman3vevo650 they had propellers tattooed on their butt cheeks. Whats not to get?
Just found your channel, and I love your work! Keep up the awesome work!

I just discovered your channel, and it is very informative for far more than just piracy! I enjoy your videos, well done sir. I like the history of origins regarding a lot of common phrases and practices most people don't even think about anymore.
Thanks Tom!
More content, I'm hooked....
Glad you like the videos Jim! I am working on the next video now, it'll go up in 2 weeks. 🏴☠️
I'm loving your channel, you're covering the world of pirates in a very interesting manner.
Could you maybe also do a video on the Berber pirates of North Africa?
Many sailors tattoo's were superstitious in nature. A swallow for every 5,000 nautical miles traveled because swallows unerringly find their way home. Anchors to help the ship hold fast in a storm. Hinges in the crook of the elbow to add strength when aloft the rigging. Christian crosses on the soles of the feet to ward off sharks if one went overboard. On a side note, the issue of rum was started by the Dutch to give the men courage before proceeding aloft - hence the term term 'Dutch courage'. They needed every ounce of strength and courage they could get.
Yes they did. Pearl of the Orient (Manila) was a infamous Pirate port. Lots of tattoo culture in Philippines.
thats sweet
People have allways found ways to modify and make one self stand out from everyone else.
Very interesting. What kind of tattoos do you reckon pirates would have had? Their initials or country names maybe?
Well, looking at the information it seems initials were very popular, so maybe the most likely.
Hey Thomas, great video ! Just a question; What map did you used at 0:49 ? looks so interesting, so many old cities.
Its called Romani Imperii Imago by Abraham Ortelius, 1581
@@ThePiratesPort Thanks
There really isn’t more paintings or images of pirates with tattoos and what those were? Thats pretty surprising.
Not very many no.
@@ThePiratesPort too bad!! I’d love to get a real life pirate tattoo. Could do one of their flags but it be cool to have something like real pirates would tattoo mermaids w/ swords or pistols, or their favorite rum logo. Maybe I can find a popular logo or name of rum that pirates would have surely drank, or their favorite gunsmiths logo or signature.?.?.?
@kinetickutz the images toward the end of the video are the closest to authentic.
Thanks
Thank you!
Is it possible that Pirates had tattoos? Yes. This video is great as it gives a description of the tattoos a sailor of the 1720's had. Good info!
ta'oos
Wonder how many got a infection and their arms fell off after getting one of those tatts with the gun powder and what ever was on hand to pierce the skin
I would be curious to know too
Your welcome
a tattoo to get into church
I have a tattoo. I'm I not piratey enough for the pirate club?
Not unless its a stick and poke colored with gunpowder. I'm not in the club either.
Can we get one about pirates and sea shanties???
Pirates didn't sing sea shanties.
@@ThePiratesPort interesting response. I won’t bother you with asking how you would disprove this. And it may not have been common practice for pirates in general. But I find it hard to believe that a group of men aboard a ship for months at a time, never sang a tune to keep entertained. It is just an assumption though.
They sang songs, but they weren't shanties. They came much later.
@@ThePiratesPort Thanks for the information and your response, I really enjoy your videos.
