I always think of the Caravaggio painting “The Conversion of St Paul” when I hear and read this story.

I often wonder if there’s a correlation between the Ananias of the Ananias/Sapphira story and this Ananias.
I pray that the Holy Spirit will just blow my mind every time I read the Bible! :)

Ahh, I was wondering if you were going to bring the KJV version into the sermon and explain why it isn't in other bible translations. I'm working through the same issue and had the same instincts to connect it back to Stephen's defense.

The words “And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him” (τρεμων τε και θαμβων ειπεν κυριε τι με θελεις ποιησαι και ο κυριος προς αυτον) are not found in any Greek manuscript. They are found in the KJV because they were inserted by Erasmus into his Greek NT (1516), which became the basis for future editions of the TR like the one used by translators of the KJV. Erasmus frankly admitted that he took the words from the parallel passage in Acts 26:14 and inserted them at this point in the Greek text. He did so because they are in the Latin Vulgate at Acts 9:6, and he thought his Greek manuscripts were defective at this point. Unfortunately, Erasmus was wrong. These words have no Greek manuscript support whatsoever, and thus constitute an indisputable error in the KJV.“ [End of William Combs comments].

This reminds of of the guy that asked Jesus what must I do to inherit the kingdom of heaven and Jesus told him to sell his possessions. We cannot look to ourselves and ask what must I do because we cannot do anything. Our works won’t save us. Instead look to God because he already did everything through his son Jesus. So I believe that the modern scholars who have translated the modern bibles like the ESV and NIV are doing the right thing of removing these errors in the KJV and the NKJV that point to self rather than to Jesus.

And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.
    Acts 9
The world has gone through a lot, and some of them so ridiculously atrocious that we wish we had a brain replacement to shield ourselves from reliving the horrors of the past, but yet, we got to live through them as they ,from time to times , crossing our minds. In the midst of those nightmares, we seek shelter or comfort to our faith, sometimes without being aware that we’re where we are because of our faith, but in the case of the pioneers of Christianity, they knew why and who were after them, and yet, under the recommendation of God himself, that servant was called upon to face the very man leading the avalanche movement of massacre against him and his fellow Christians. That sounds surprising, and even callous some might say on the part of God, to send someone running away, seeking to steer clear of high speed oncoming train , right back in front of it. As obedient that servant of God might have been, he objected to that demand, and obeyed until God provided him with the reassurance of his safety. But for that divine intervention to Saul, absolutely no Christians he would find in his way after securing the warrant would have been spared, if they did not consent to renounce their faith, which is antithetical to the recommendation of Jesus to them, should they do, they forfeit their prospects of entering heaven, which Jesus says he only could grant. In the flip side of that, Saul was out to enforce the laws of Judaism, that he believes Christianity violates. Maneuvering between the two extremes is quite puzzling, and leaves anyone to wonder what’s the deal, and what lies behind God’s mind to create so much quarrel between his people that he himself creates? To show you what does a deep-seated belief can do, the crowd of fanatics that Saul was leading, were lying in wait to kill him, after words were circulating about his conversion to Christianity, and had to leave that city secretly. Shortly thereafter, Saul became Apostle Paul and was immediately answering his calling, which was to preach the gospel of Jesus across the globe, and consequently he ,too, was being pummeled, persecuted , prosecuted rigorously, and eventually dead. That cannot be funny for anyone with a soul, let alone God. Though that might sound hypothetical to some, which it should, as opposed to complete obedience to anything said to be from God, which proves to be misleading and has had terrible consequences in society at large, if it turns out to be a joke when it comes to Jesus for whom millions have suffered a great deal , and those who ferociously caused their pains in the name of God, certainly wouldn’t be happy should they cross paths in heaven. What was all that about, and who was being that misleading scheme aimed at creating chaos in our midst, and what kind of consequences do they face? It’s quite amazing to see that most of the cold-blooded criminals thought they were being placed by God to destroy the lives of countless innocent people. Though no one dares question them on their beliefs, and even if you could, you certainly wouldn’t get a satisfactory answer, since they’re programmed animals who only act according to the devils by which they’re possessed, luring them to the delusions of being messianic. That’s the danger zone. If reasoning and sound judgement are the best tools to rid societies of crimes, fake religious beliefs impede them from taking roots, thereby, endangering the lives of many, and transform the world around us into shamble. The only remedy to the danger we face as always, is simply the removal of all the toxic remains of heaven (angels or devils) from our planet, and civility will run supreme across the globe. God, please , stop pampering your heavenly kids , hold them accountable for their actions, and stop putting saddling us with their nonsense which we have nothing to do with. Be responsible, God!

I enjoy learning from your sessions, but i dont like when you generalize all Muslim by saying that Isis is the true face of Islam. We must be careful how we label other peoples' belief.
