- Why 2CV Ice Racing is the Funniest Motorsport - Fwd drifting. In this special episode Jonny Smith headed to a Southern French ski resort to take part in possibly the world's slowest motorsport - racing Citroen 2CVs on ice. Never has 15 mph been more entertaining. With spiked tyres, less than 30bhp and ski trousers, Jonny tried both piston and EV converted classic 2CVs on a track ploughed by the piste bashers.

A joyous film. Thanks Jonny. Who knew that watching little cars go sideways at 10mph would be so therapeutic. Who needs fucking yoga when you have Jonny Smith films.
I've owned my current 2CV since 2002 and I've done over 205,000 miles of its 275, 600+miles, driving all over the UK from Land's End to John O'Groats. We've been over to Orkney, lived in the Shetland Islands for over 7 years, been over to the Isle of Harris and Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, as well as Skye, Isle of Mull, and a fair few more remote corners of the British Isles. We've gone over to the west coast of Ireland, around the Ring of Kerry, and all over western Europe from France, Spain, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. I also own a 1932 Morris Minor open two-seater with a 3-speed 'crash' gearbox, cable-operated brakes, and solid axles front and rear. Last summer I drove it 1,200 miles in 8 days on a tour up to the Scottish Highlands from the English Midlands. The 2CV feels like a sportscar in comparison to that little 92-year-old Morris! I never thought I'd be able to say a 2CV feels like a sportscar 😂 Love them both and massively enjoy driving them all over the UK.
This is quality 👏🏼 I’ve just picked up a MK1 Golf and was a little nervy about driving it from Denmark to UK as it’s only a 3 speed auto box. This has definitely put my mind at ease 😂 good luck with the next 205,000 miles!
@@robbiebarnes Excellent! You can't beat a good long road trip in an old car. Though a mk1 Golf is almost a modern car 😄
quite the inspirational story there is there another chapter it can't of all been plain sailing...cable operated brakes bet they make ya feel alive
How many bodies did you go through in that many miles?
How about using a bicycle instead? Or walking? Sure, a Landrover would have been worse, but have you ever considered that you're still selfishly destroying the planet you evidently like to see so much? Please slow down, I want something left for my grandchildren and beyond!
This kind of grassroots motorsport that is genuinely approachable for anyone is so rare nowadays, this is brilliant. I love everything about this.
Petition to get the whole F1 grid to do this for one race a season just to keep things interesting… double points on offer as well
Great episode. Props to Joe for being a massively good sport and letting you drive his (no doubt beloved) 007 machine.
Indeed, thanks to Joe for being so relaxed, even when I kissed the ice on the back wing....
Cheers man👍
39:40 secs of joy. I was sold on buying a 2CV and making this trip after just the first few minutes.
2380
YES, NO, YES, NO.... YES.
This episode was great.
😀
Oh. My. God. What fun!!! The type of racing wherein the drivers can point out scenery and passing airplanes. I absolutely love it.
'That's Not a Crash'... Best Dad quote of the day...
It was simply a kiss.
What a superb episode. Awesome (tin) snails pace racing and some incredible scenery. Excellent cinematography to boot. Feeling the urge to go out and buy a 2CV now!
The summer tires on the rear is not a great idea. But the 6 hour lunch is
Loving the Cool Runnings team. What a vista!
The perfect vista for....
Many years ago I went to Brands Hatch to watch Truck racing and before the trucks started to race, we had some other car racers... I watched Citroen 2 CV cars race it was hilarious, there was about 20+ cars racing and at the 1st bend/corner they were about 6 cars abreast and to see them all leaning on each other through the bend was amazing but also hilarious 😂
Captain Slow's favourite race. Brilliant.
You don't care about how cold it is when you have this much fun.
Exactly!
"Toddler argument" drift..."No, Yes, No, Yes, No."
Wow that looked so much fun! It so goes to show that horse power is not required for enjoyment, there is no way that you could have the same pure fun in a Lamborghini!
Thanks Jonny for doing what only you can do. Bringing an eclectic collection of automotive interest to a keen audience.
Do this in Italy, with Lamborghini tractors…
That looks sooooo much fun! I need to pop and see Darren down the road (2CV Shop) and see what he’s got… probably too good to go racing 😂
I need a 2CV in my life and do this! Brilliant episode Jonny.
Even low speed can feel fast when you're sliding towards an immovable object with zero grip. 😂
Interesting continuity with Jonny's blue and white 2CV on the second day, starting the race with a broken headlamp, which appeared to've mended itself a few laps later, only to be hanging off again towards the end. I was looking out for the incident during the race that caused the injury, but nothing was mentioned. Did I imagine the whole thing?! 😵💫
Excuse me this video progressively gets more sweary… indeed it would for me too, much earlier. Great work Johnny.
Now I know what i use in choosing my cars: Smiles per gallon! Such an important metric!! Thank you Jonny again for putting a smile on my face and now even grant me a new metric to boast about! :D
Beautiful, friendly, absolutely bonkers and the only way to do it. Well done mate!
Had a CV2 Charleston as my first car for 8 yrs. Loved it!
Drove it in my home area, which is mid level mountais and back then with lots of snow in winter. With normal winter tires, I got through anywhere. Often smiled at the BMWs that stood on the side unable to get up the hill.
It is a very exciting race because a short touch of the harder snow sides would probably let it fold. 😂
FANTASTICLY BONKERS!!!!
Great video. A follow up video with the 4WD 2CV having a go on snow tyres all round would be ace.
🫶 this gives you a grin from ear 👂 to ear 👂! What could possibly better then this….. nothing! 👍🏻👍🏻🆙 Can’t wait for the Mehari!!
*This* is one of my favourite thing to do in winter, preferably with awd or rwd. you dont need a new, expensive and powerful car, making it cheap, just use your daily car, and the strain on the undercarrige and drivetrain are minimal.
Loving your 2CV era Jonny... this was great fun, brilliantly filmed and I'm looking forward to your other 2CV content going forward!
One of my favourite memories of my 1956 Morris Minor was playing in the snow one year - sideways and smiling at 12mph! 😅
I raced in rally at a fairly high level then decided to do some stock car racing. I put together an entry level car, $600 claimer class. It was so much fun at this grass roots level I never went any higher. The first race I actually had a car on the track for $200. Man was I slow. Then better tires $200. Then some suspension mods = some hours of cutting welding. And I had a mid pack car. So much fun.
My dad (Colin Howard) helped to introduce 2CV racing to the UK on dirt tracks - they used to run the tyres at ultra-low pressure so that they'd pop off the rims & reduce the gearing lolz
You just topped my bucket list, tomorrow buy 2CV & 2 spiked tyres!
Top fun! Thanx for sharing🙏
What great fun! Like driving to work on a snowy day before the roads are cleared. My favourite type of driving.
Keep smiling Jonny, you’ve made my day!
My first car was a 2CV, my Dad had 4 before that.
That’s my favourite hill, which I’ve cycled up so to combine that with a car I love is amazing.
Best vid ever Jonny, thanks for this!
Oh my goodness. Such fun. Fantastic video production too.
Just to prove speed isn't every I remember watching 2cv racing at donnington in the 80s
A Jason Potato 'ooh you fighter' nearly snuck out there when in the electric car Jonny!
The organizer has the most fitting surname for this kind of racing 😅 Thankfully, no recoveries had to be made and everyone had fun.
Great fun! It's just one continuous slow motion crash waiting to happen. I imagine a certain Mr Hubnut is a tad jealous.
I've come to realise that you Mr Smith are a big fan of the 2cv, and I am totally on board! ❤
More of this please. Brilliant stuff and great to watch the slo-mo-joy of it all. Hill climbing next please!
Jonny Dares Season 1! 😁👊🏼
That looks like T-Shirt weather! 😎
You had me smiling all the way from start to finish. What an episode...
Thanks for the video, brings back fond memories fae my youth, when a mates parents had a 2cv and use to take us around in it! Loved the tuna top roof on it! Loving the Channel!👍🏻👌🏻
Absolutely delightful episode. Loved The almost constant chuckling and joy. Keep them coming!
Thank you. It really was a hoot from start to finish. OK, maybe not when we crunched the 007 car of Joe's...
Your best episode so far!!!
And what a grand little car the 2cv is!
A car that in this new reality of not using to much resources, deserves a grand comeback as a "smart classic" to own!!
I hope to see your 2cv in some video in the future! :)
A 6 hour lunch is the most French and lovely thing
Thank you Jonnie. That looked like so much fun. I used to own a 2cv and have gone from the Nethrlands to Austria several times (Snow chains included). Maybe....
What a blast!
I love this - and the only time I used the brakes on my Dyane back in the day was to pull up ✌️ love these cars forever and what a great vid!
Looks like a lot of fun. I always found that my 2CV was particularly competent on snow with the combination of narrow tyres, low power and front wheel drive. These days I go to a lot of hivernales on my motorcycle. I usually wear ski/snowboard clothing for the events as they are reall warm, comfortable and practical.
This is why I tune into this channel. Brilliant.
Smiles per mile, incredible fun. and you did ok Jonny!
That looks so much fun!
It really was Andrew. It was such a hoot.
Looks amazing and simply stunning scenery 😮❤😊
This is fantastic, it looks like such a great thing to take part in.
What a wonderful film- beautiful scenery, a hilarious but skilful motor sport, and a great guy having fun with it and taking us all with him. Love the variety you bring us, Jonny! 👏
Thank you. It was a special thing to tick off the list.
This is why we love this channel.
What a hoot. Brilliant. I got to try 2CV cross many years ago which was hilarious but this takes the cake.
james may ( captain slow ) would love this race hahaha 🤣🤣👍
This was a fun one Jonny.
Hopefully more driving stuff like this in the future.
I used to take my Dolly to watch the 24 hour 2 CV racing at Spa Francorchamps. That was a lot of fun too. Five 2CVs abreast coming through La Source has to be seen to be appreciated.
Production level is phenomenal Johnny!
This is just totally brilliant! As a 2CV owner and fan, I would love to have a go at this one day!!
Another great Video Johnny looks so much fun 🥶
This is so joyful!
Looks like you had an awesome time. Have a good week. Marc from Australia 🇦🇺
That looks the most fun ever! ProKarts around Peterborough speedway track at midnight in the 90's was our fun. had to turn in halfway down the straight and keep your foot in. on slicks of course!
Similar concept, I spent a very fun day at Phil Price rally school a few years ago sliding knackered Mk2 Escorts around with knobbly tyres on the front and road tyres on the back. The cars all had MIG spec diffs.
The technique was 'Lift, Turn, Kick.' Get off the throttle, turn in and then boot the throttle. Spent the day doing full lock drifts.
16:50 - the best vista, but not Jonny's usual sort of vista chat!
that looks awesome fun :D the 2CV is a classic in every sense, you either love them or loathe them, im starting to love after 52 years of loathing :P
Loved loved loved watching that as a child my mum has 2 cv 4 ,2 cv6 and a dyane 6 so I love these cars can’t wait for the mehari video there is next to none on you tube
Just brilliant! Can tell how hard it is by the,(slightly) forced laughter...
Just brilliant. We had a 2CV for 3-4 years in the mid-late 80s. Loved it then and the affair has never ended, although I no longer own one
Looks like fun. Reminds of another Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. I love the ice race car chase scene.
WHAT?! This is incredible!
Tres, tres bon Monsieur Smith! This was absolutely amazing and we need some races like this in the UK. Ok, maybe it'll only work in the far north of Scotland where it actually snows properly. 😀
The late Great Paddy Hopkirk was also a fan of 2CV racing.
Absolutely brilliant!
Another great vid 👌
This looks so fun!
That looks like such a lot of fun - bucket list ❤
So Loved this weeks offering. It’s what makes your channel so genuine and interesting Jonny.
I also appreciated the Tamiya frog hoody put to work battling the cold. 👌
Pleasure sir! Great that someone noticed the Tamiya garment too. 👍🏽
@@TheLateBrakeShow Tamiya played a huge part in so many of our upbringings. I know you have a soft spot for it too so if you ever venture down the route of childhood loft finds I have probably 20 of the first 100 Tamiya’s produced (it would possibly take longer to dig them out than unloading some of the garages you stumble across).
Thanks again.
At 01:13 host says "It's Citroen 2CV ice racing" as a Citroen Diane slides gracefully past the camera. Well it made me smile anyway.
I loved my wife's 2CV. The gear champ 2-3-2 was superb.
Looks to be excellent fun!
Great content well done 👍👍👍
Excellent video Jonny, you need to bring your 2cv to the world meeting in Slovenia next year, it's well worth the drive to have a week of fun with a lot of nutty people 😁
So damn cool, and what stunning scenery.
I wish I still had a 2CV, owned 3 over the years each time in gaps between working overseas and then coming back to the youth. Callow youth that I was I let each one go.
Fantastic driving
The only kind of drifting that actually looks very fun without all the stink and waste of resources... Most cool! Hope to see it live someday!
Just brilliant, fantastic
That looks like so much goddamned fun!
Fantastic
2CV FTW
I used to go to Brands Hatch and watch the 2CV racing series. Nobody wanted to come last, but also didn't care about coming 1st either. They simply had a great time.
Oh wow! Jonny I am going to have to do this race. Can you imagine an Aussie on snow? What is that white stuff? Thanks mate that was a great video and a great story.
That looks a hoot, in a stunning location 👍🏻
Good practice for winter in wales at 20mph, I had a 2cv6 five years ago it was a portugeese one 1987 wish I had kept it now it would be 40 years old in 3 years time and MOT exempt, I paid a grand for it ten years ago and it was the best surviving one for sale at the time with no front floors in it, it needed new shock absorbers and king pins on the front hubs the sender unit on the tank repairing and a lot of welding but I got it on the road in 12 months and in total it cost about 3 grand to do it up but it wasnt being used enough so I sold it on. The welding was done by Barry Annells who took part in a lot of 2cv racing back in the day.
Three lug life. Excellent choice 👌
I'd love a lean machine. They look like fun on the ice
