  • I forgot to mention its interesting at the end of P5 how Morgana retains his form as a cat despite the metaverse disappearing, black cats go back to Faust as it was one of the forms Mephistopheles disguised himself as. Along with the final persona being a demon lord Satanael and the overarching theme of Rebellion against the existing order of reality it seems there is a very strong Luciferian/Gnostic theme in P5.

Persona is an interesting take on psychology, the first game was about a mentally ill girl who's fears and depression become reality, and all of this is a spin off of a series called Shin Megami Tensei which is more based on philosophy

I agree with your points on the forced change of hearts kind of going against a lot of the spirit of growth and a lot of the concepts tying back to Jungian philosophy the other games have. But I will say that that Persona 5 is a pretty heavy handed commentary on Japan's collectivist culture. So the thing with the palace rulers is that their crimes are often not even that well hidden, but they're able to slide by because challenging them would put you against the status quo and be punished as a result. The only way to truly take down someone like that is to either convince everyone to go against their best interest for the sake of exposing evil or to convince the criminal to come clean. You can even see how, for example, forcing Kamoshida to come clean effects the school and students negatively with the adults clearly preferring to overlook the abuse so as not to draw negative attention. The game presents this idea of the change of hearts as sort of a shortcut to overcome this, but making a handful of criminals confess to their crimes can't fix society at large. The holy grail at the bottom of mementos represents society's fear of making meaningful change, which is why it's assigned the sin of Sloth. It's definitely stuff you can still relate to outside of its cultural context, like a lot of people relate to the Kamoshida storyline because they had a similar incident at their school. What a lot of them can't always relate to is that the idea of Kamoshida being exposed having consequences for basically anyone even tangentially involved.

Shadows in Persona/Jungian psychology are repressed thoughts in the unconscious mind. In the case of Futaba, her repressed thoughts were the truth behind what happened to her mother, as she was gaslit into thinking it was her fault she died. Thus her shadow represents the part of her that wants her to know the truth, that why she like that. The P4 shadows do this also, all of them talk about accepting some sort of truth.
I guess it's a game of semantics, but the PT can't force someone to go through a change of heart, as in the change happens as an extension of power or something. It's a conclusion the other party must come to on their own, like with Futaba. She had to come to the conlusion herself, it didnt just happen without her action entirely. They're just opening up the possibility. We see this in every shadow fight where the PT have to convince the shadow with words. I don't see it as anything fundamentally different from 4 where the party tries/helps to convince the person to accept their shadow after a fight. The only real difference is that they are convincing the shadow of something in specific.
Shido also doesn’t have direct involvement with creating Mementos or Yaldabaoth. His team was just talking about the government system, like how they could still continue to operate without Shido. The game was more about making a point that taking out Shido wouldn't fix the systemic issues of Japan, which Yaldabaoth represents by being the collective desire for collectivism.
Carl Jung did write about the demiurge, specifically he viewed it as an aspect of the mind that is arrogant and sees itself as the center of the world, which has a desire to control everything around itself. This also plays into the game he was playing with Joker and Akechi. He wanted to see if humanity could truly overcome their desire to be ruled, to prove to himself that he's right, but his arrogance leads to his downfall (Goro Akechi: An Analysis by SnicketySlice goes into why Akechi is Yaldabaoth's champion and in contrast, Joker is Igor's as he believes humanity can overcome. It was a bet they were both making before the events of the literal game but he cheated and tried to control the game, as in the bet between them). He was also using the PT for his plans with the whole prison thing, so it was multi purpose as to why he did it. Them beating him is more about giving humanity another chance, to momentarily push back the desire. Like in P3 and P4, they don't stop humanity from feeling that way, just push back against it for a moment.
Also, why was the Sae palace twist dumb? They establish from the first palace that it's very easy to confuse the real world with a palace because only one place is heavily changed. Like before they see the castle/school, Joker and Ryuji thought they were in the real world. And they knew the cognitive Joker would be there because Sae in the real world knows he's there, so it creates a cognitive version of him, like other palace rulers. All the things they did were established rules (unless I'm forgetting something).
Small nitpick but all entities that are said to come from the collective unconscious come from/need humanity. In the case of Persona and the larger SMT franchise, humans come first, and gods and demons are born from us. And I don't think Persona 5 is saying power always corrupts or something; we just see a lot of people misuse it, like the PT have power, and that's seen as good mostly. I get the impression that it's just about being responsible with the power you have. Like during the Okumara arc, the game questions the PT themselves and the message I get is that they need to be more aware and responsible but that the power itself isnt bad as it can do good. There are also several people in the cast who want to get high positions of power to make changes, and this is potrayed as good to want power for that reason (ex: Haru wanting to be the head of her Dad's company and Makoto wanting to be a police commsioner).

Okay watching through this I think you'd really enjoy Shin Megami Tensei, its where all the shadow and persona designs come from, and it's a series more focused on the religion usually giving you as the player the option of choosing which side (God and the angels, Lucifer and the demons and Humanity) you wish to support, they have a lot of religious references, the most recent game SMT V is about the main character slowly gaining strength to take the throne god, the story is that God (usually based on the abrahamic god) has been killed, the world is fading and his throne is open for the next god to come in and create his or her own world, and you are the one who's closet to taking it
And you get 4 choices (6 in the enhanced version on its own storyline)
    Recreating the old god's order
Creating a polytheistic universe where all gods have power
Leave humanity to fend for themselves
Create a world for humanity without gods or demons
Create a perfect world of harmony
Or destroy the current world and create a new universe without the cycle of different gods claiming and losing their throne.

Brilliant video, as always your approach to video games and literature is greatly appreciated. When it comes to Persona, I'd recommend you check Persona 2, which is in my opinion the best of the series and a genuine life-changer, Maya is easily the best Persona protagonist and my favorite character. On another note, if you're ever in the mood for another visual novel (seeing as you've read Umineko and enjoyed it), I highly highly recommend Full Metal Daemon Muramasa and Wonderful Everyday. These both have considerable sexual content, but I cannot endorse them enough, even if someone is averse to it. I can confidently say that both of these are of the same quality as Umineko's story and carry just as much philosophical importance in terms of the ideas and particularly the way they are tackled. The former is set in an alternate early 20th century and plays out like a classic tragedy, with the added benefit of insanely cool mecha fights and a truly deep dive into justice and morality and how they relate to killing. On the other hand, Wonderful Everyday is to Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus what Umineko is to Dante's Divine Comedy. Just wanted to type this since I found your channel recently and it's been a joy to watch and listen to, cheers.

@@leafread2429 Yeah, it's a fascinating display of the ideas of TLP. Another one I'd recommend is Dies Irae (full of literary references). It's such a fun and insane ride I'll just let this plot synopsis do the talking:
In Suwahara City, high school student Ren Fujii's relationship with his best friend Shirou Yusa comes to a crashing halt after an unfortunate incident. The fight that resulted lead to a two month hospitalization for Ren. In December 2006, Ren leaves the hospital hoping to live a new life...but that never happens.
In May 1945, as the Red Army storms Berlin and World War II nears its end, a group of Nazi officers use the resulting bloodshed to complete a dark ritual to summon the Longinus Dreizehn Ordennote , superhuman harbingers of the world's demise. It wasn't known if the officers succeeded in their goal and with the Third Reich's collapse the incident eventually faded into obscurity.
Sixty-one years later, the Orden makes their appearance in Suwahara City. Despite Ren's desires for an ordinary life, he finds himself forced into a war against the Orden, drifting further away from what he once held dear. Like Shirou once said, "If you live in this town, you'll go mad sooner or later."

32:57 I think you're somewhat misinterpreting Jung's idea of the Shadow Archetype here. The Shadow represents parts of ourselves pushed down below the surface into the subconscious (which, as a student of Frued's for half a decade Jung was very concerned with). Futaba's story was one of self-loathing. She was a traumatized pre-teen whose mother had just (apparently) committed suicide right in front of her, and who was convinced she drove her mother to do that. Futaba's entire arc in that palace was pushing past her self-loathing, and so the fact that her Shadow was trying to help her shows that one of the parts of her personality she had sublimated was her own sense of self-preservation, or even her ability to want good things for herself. Futaba reaches out because she wants help getting out of a self-destructive cycle.
And regarding the hypocrisy over power, evil, and the use of power, the game itself calls that out. A big part of P5's themes is an exploration of political anarchism, and the innate contradictions associated with it. If a system is oppressive, it is just to oppose it, but new systems innately emerge, _even from the actions of those tearing down unjust systems_ (the manipulation of the Phansite, Okumura's situation, the prison in the end). A challenge for political anarchism is that a) some level of order, rules, and hierarchy ends up always being required for society to function, b) that hierarchy is inherently corrupting, but is apparently inevitable, and c) there are always going to be people who prefer to be led by others, for whom true, unfettered freedom, is horrific. (Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, also by Atlus, explores the idea of being unable to really grasp and utilize freedom, especially in the character of Ms. Takao; in fact, mainline Shin Megami Tensei tends to focus more on the social conflicts between freedom and security, duty to the self vs. duty to the collective, etc.). So now you have these kids dealing with oppressive systems, but at a loss for how to replace the things they destabilize (which is not just a problem for kids; look at real-life revolutions and how they tend to go).
And the Grail is basically like the antagonists of the previous Persona games inasmuch as he's supposed to be a manifestation of the desires of (at least a sizable portion of) humanity gone amok. Nyx was nihilism and despair, the embrace of oblivion and apathy, Ame-no-Sigiri in P4 represents the desire to hide unpleasant truths (he's the literal Japanese god of fog), and the Grail represents humanity's desire for an easy answer, to not have to make tough decisions. I actually think they handle the concept better in Persona 5 Strikers with the Arc of the Covenant, but because it's basically a retread of what they did with the Grail here, it's not as interesting. But a huge part of the Persona games' mythos is the idea that the Collective Unconcious is ever-changing, and morphs as a result of the views, feelings, and desires of humanity. Inaba as the small town with dirty secrets would value a fog to hide the truth they're unwilling to face. Almost every named character in Persona 3 suffered immense personal trauma, so the idea of embracing oblivion and giving up on life entirely would be attractive to them, and a repeated motif in Persona 5 is the difficulty of taking responsibility and breaking free of systems that make all the decisions for you. That theme of rebelling against authority figures then runs up against a literal manifestation of many people who _yearn_ for an authority figure whose orders they can just follow without having to think.

It's very very heavily features erotic graphics and long drawn out erotic sequence that you get no option to blur, hide, or skip.
Anyone thinking of playing it themselves must know whether that's a deal breaker for them or not. Otherwise I think there were some let's plays of it on RUclips that black out all the graphic stuff while still giving you all of the dialogue, so that's definitely an option.

These are the only games that I have sat down to play and wanted to play them to the end without it feeling like a drag (except for some of the grinding in Tartoros or some of the longer palaces of Persona 5), whereas I sit down to play most video games and am sick of it after three hours. Inner Journeys and Fictional Ultimate Conflicts are a way to explore proposed solutions in a distanced manner as to where they can vent (Yaldabaoth isn't too subtle if you understand that Persona 5 is a very Japanese game and he represents what Atlus sees as Japan's biggest issue, it's stagnant and conservative attitude). Inner journeys are very important to your growth as a person yourself, don't go believing it's fictional just because it's represented often in fiction. Totally agree that the switcheroo in P5 is really bad, especially with how there's no explanation for the most important part (shadows/cognitions immediately disappear when killed and they don't there), and the game can't decide if it wants Goro being the traitor to be the twist or that they knew all along, so neither actually works. Persona 5 has a lot of trying way too hard and wanting to appeal to literally everyone energy in the first place.

@@Seth_blessingSozo I disagree. There's no reason for them to drag out the last bit of the interrogation where Sae and Joker avoid saying Goro's name in every possible way and instead play the pronoun game, there's no reason for Joker to get flashbacks of Goro's voice where the game hides his name, and there's no reason for Morgana in the flashback to say "Show it to the true culprit, you know, the traitor" without that at least partially being the twist they were going for. There's also no reason for that to be where the reveal about Goro happens period if it wasn't going to be a twist there. You have to reveal he was the traitor BEFORE you reveal they knew about it. Go rewatch the interrogation with Sae and you'll see that the focus was not the identity of the culprit but the phone. It's the same with that conversation with Morgana. I'm more convinced by that 'cause of how nonchantly the game shows Akechi's reveal compared to how it shows the Big plan. Akechi's reveal is only there as a stand point to emotionaly engage the player in the following events as well as a quick shock scene to people who didn't have any clue.

    • @Pystoria
      @Pystoria 8 дней назад

@@Seth_blessingSozo There's no reason to have more buildup or emotional engagement considering the entire game was buildup to the interrogation room's events and there's no reason why they'd be coy about saying his name at all. I know the primary reveal was about the group knowing, that's why they spent so much time explaining it compared to Goro, but the reveal about Goro still happens and they drag it out for no real payoff. I think it would've been so much cooler if instead we saw Goro call Shido or something out of earshot of the party but not the player at some point during Sae's arc. That way the player would be prompted to think about how and why Goro would betray them and lead to the interrogation room's events, only for whatever they may have imagined getting subverted at the reveal they knew all along. That's what I mean by both reveals falling flat - having both at once robs the story of so much potential and forces the characters to speak for the audience over themselves. I'm curious about your comment about Nier Re[in]carnation, the one about how you 'kinda had to pay' for the story content, and I'm wondering in what way. I, personally, was able to F2P most of the side content, and the stuff I didn't finish was from not wanting to deal with the tedium of constantly building parties for the Recollections of Dusk. I mean, you could argue that any game "locks story content" behind a paywall just by costing money, right? I think the game was very forgiving with giving out powerful units the whole way through as long as you played semi-constantly, so I'm wondering what you meant.
    Oh yeah, and good video.

It's a real shame you have played the base version of P5, because the Royal content is much, much better than everything else. One thing it touches upon that you mentioned is the fact that Phantom Thieves' brainwashing is kind of messed up and goes against the message of the series, it also tackles the topic of trying to force one's vision upon society instead of working on oneself. Royal redeems P5 in my books, the base game's story is kiiind of ass .

Hard agree - I wish *spoiler 3rd semester villain* could replace Shido as the big bad where that storyline is even more embedded into the based game (along with the grail bc I don’t hate the idea of speaking to collectivist culture), and just making Shido a lower stakes opponent (like replacing Okumura).
3rd semester arc is so strong, I’d honestly have just taken that game

Speaking of bad video game remakes/remasters. Persona 3 Portable on Steam was a pretty bad remake (I guess port is more accurate but whatever). They barely changed anyything from the PSP version. Also, all the textures were AI upscaled.

Persona 5 has the strongest story out of the 3, by far. Everyone tries to connect the themes directly to psychology -- the parallels of which are far too obvious -- but existential philosophy is the true point of reference to analyze. The one criticism of this series is that the tonal incongruence, the whiplash of lighthearted and edgy anime tropes, can cause many to tune out from the overriding themes about personal identity and responsibility, but when you know what to look for, P5 fulfills the existential philosophy more faithfully than anything.
It's a minor spoiler for the ending of P5 and for the opening of NieR Automata, but here goes: P5 ends on a cathartic climax where you, let's say, send a sinful shell through the demiurge. Juxtapose this with 2B's quotation from the cold open of NieR:A, "I often think about the god who blessed us with this cryptic puzzle...and wonder if we'll ever get the chance to kill him." The simple difference between the two games is thus: one game feigns being philosophical by name-dropping philosophers, hence eschewing much of the subtext of the "existential crisis" (NieR:A), while the other game (P5) fulfills Sartre's desire to usurp the cosmic authoritarian, bringing freedom back to the masses. The symbolism in P5 is both direct and subtle, such as Joker being the inmate of the Velvet Room who is allegorically "condemned to be free." P5 is not the game about crappy adults; it is unabashedly the story of all our lives, how "man makes himself" and how we must take off the mask to be free.
It's here that Persona 5 not only goes above and beyond what any video game narrative has ever done, both in scale and scope, by attempting nothing less than to examine and reconcile the granular problems of every day life (friendship, romance, opportunity costs, the bonds we break and mend) with the macro (impermanence of life, the impossible synthesis of the divinity, our dispositions and our moralistic responsibilities to each other), but it achieves the perfect narrative for the subject matter, the only one which it could have pulled off given the ambition and nature of the themes.
P4 is about self acceptance, but it botches the god complex, focusing more on the mystery of you know who doing you know what. P3, while similar in scope to P5, does not go as deep in connecting the themes through symbolism as Joker and Arsene's bond, and the PT and their Personas, respectively. All 3 games are excellent in their themes but P5 is the one that combines elements from all of the others into the most coherent statement, even with some of the padding left in. It doesn't just retain the best production values; it has the biggest heart, no pun intended.
