She has such quick wit for someone who learned English a few years ago and has dealt with trauma. I also love how strong-willed she is and how she doesn’t come off as a victim but more as a fighter and survivor.

As a Korean man with family in NK, I don’t see any civility or compassion here, and couldn’t watch more than 15 minutes of it. @ 6:50 “so you’re like bears, you eat for one month and starve for the next.” (Everyone laughs) - is that keeping it compassionate?
Andrew’s people skills are off the charts. That joke when Yeonmi was having a hard time talking about the survivor’s guilt she feels for her father was masterful.
I don't normally enjoy this podcast bc personally it's hard listening to 5 people laughing really loud at nothing and talking over eachother all the time, but this one was great! Bc there was a good balance of genuine questions vs comedy and they interviewed a person that's story was genuinely impactful. It's a great use of your platform to educate ppl w comedic relief!
Andrew is becoming a really good interviewer. When Yeonmi started crying while she was talking about her father and he comes in with that well timed joke to lighten the mood and redirect the conversation. Top tier.
I can't believe this podcast is real.. truly the wildest timeline we're living in and this crossover makes it all worth it. As a Korean-American, I think this was such a masterclass of melding global human rights issues and comedy, and shows how comedy is so necessary to spread information on such heavy topics, such as this topic on Korean history and the current travesties still occuring in North Korea
Yo, you copy my comment bc I don't see anyone else saying this and for the life of me I can't figure out why. This should be a part of highschool history curriculum for its efficacy to get young men to listen to a woman's story about political suffering and truth.
The ironic part of that is Americans who watch only one news outlet, whether it’s more left or right, become influenced by that channel/news outlet’s content/bias. Which is exactly what propaganda is meant to do. Not to the extent of brainwashing like in North Korea, but anyone or everyone knows at least 1 person that’s been influenced (to be polite) by the news/media.
This is one of the most wholesome interview I ever saw. It gives a whole new perspective altogether. Comedy brings people together. Wanna find common ground? Find what you can laugh to together. She is damn funny.
This is the most comfortable I’ve seen Yeonmi. I’m glad you guys injected a lot of humor into the conversation and also not a lot of beating around the bush and I bet she really appreciated it. *This is my favorite interview of Yeonmi. Don't get me wrong, she's great in other podcasts but it's always so serious & somber. And although I'm not trying to downplay her horrific past, sometimes things can get too dark, and you need to uplift yourself & others. Plus it's make her more human and shows different sides to her - she's not just a victim but someone who's survived and now thriving. This podcast has a good mix of both and also shows she knows how to take a joke*
Didn't many North Korean refugees in South Korea actually called out her story as bullshit, with it having changed multiple times as well, with the first accounts describing her family as pretty well off?
genuinely such a beautiful combination here. such heavy topics yet we can all laugh through it at the same time as we learn so much. artfully done and i love all of yall
She not getting offended by their jokes shows how mature and down to the ground person she is. I mean their jokes were not mean spirited at all but just reliving the horror memories and laughing about it shows real character and that she doesn't let the past determine who she is.
The way she casually talks about execution and her life being threatened is terrifying. She had faced a completely different reality than most of us. Great interview.
This is so amazing and powerful. New world revolution started with this survivor. 💚💚💚 protect your soul. She is the definition of the word. She says true God believers saved her and gave her hope.
Yeonmi is so honest and refreshing. I know there’s people that don’t believe her and accuse her of the very things addressed in this interview… but I like her and I believe her and I will buy her book.
I noticed at 1:11:59 when Yeonmi started talking about her dad Andrew reeled her back in so she wouldn’t cry and feel that pain again by cracking a joke. I’m pretty sure someone else would’ve taken it further and had her cry even harder for views. Great job Andrew 👏
Bc when your life is actually hard, the little shit doesn't even register to you. Most Americans have it so well, they have to make up struggles to be upset about
Yeah her level of intelligence is fascinating especially for someone from NK being smarter than the average westerner… Just watched the Joe Rogan pod with her right after this and they had some really important conversations about what’s going in the west which even people born here cant acknowledge
She knows comedic timing and perspective like the best of them too. A weekend improv/gricean maxim course and she'd have a killer comedy routine that really teaches people.
You can tell how intelligent and how self-aware she is as she acclimated to the jokes and the atmosphere of the room. Her insight and perspective is invaluable to the current discourse in the west and her honesty is a shining example of understanding the trade-offs in the ideologies we believe in. One of the best guests of the show thus far
I was so nervous about this episode and maaaan, what a great atmosphere. Shultz's interview skill keeps improving. The other guys navigated the interview tastefully without sacrificing humor, and it allowed us to see her playful and extremely witty side. Great episode.
This was an incredible interview. I liked that you joked around with her and asked her about things she like/doesn’t like or thinks that doesn’t have to do with her past. It makes her very human. This was something special

This was one of the best podcast episodes I’ve ever seen. Thank you for bringing awareness and thank you Yeonmi for sharing your story🥺
Yeonmi saying this is the first time someone made fun of her in person really exposes whats great about comedy. No matter our background, everybody deserves to be part of jokes. Nobody is above or below them.
Hearing her laugh was the highlight of my day, I dont think I've ever heard of someone more deserving of a wonderful life then this lovely girl. What grit and determination.
She certainly needs some alliances that are not for personal gain and there is no doubt that kim did nt get her but right winged views did, I personally have similar right wing veiws but something about the arguments verbatim, disproportionate comparisons, she is incredibly naive despite her trauma but most Koreans have very similar view points collectively pre 1950 so i do believe the conservative views are hers .

She’s so captivating. So articulate and self aware. All while being incredibly strong considering all the horrific things she’s seen. And to top it off SHES HILARIOUS! She has a brilliant sense of humor, very self aware. This podcast is one of my favorites of all time I think.
How sad is it that this woman grew up without the privilege of education and is now more educated about our country than many Americans. She is more aware and appreciative of our rights and freedoms than half our country is.
When you've been in a hundreds of interviews, your lies would be firm and detailed enough to make it seem like it actually happened and so you can benefit from it.
"Victim crowd"? Wtf are you even talking about? If you're talking about the fact that police disproportionately beat and arrest black people in america, what does this have to do with it? What are you saying, that they're not as brutal as they could be?? American police are known to be excessively punitive, jumpy, poorly trained and violently disposed. If you think the fact that the North Korean regime is genocidal is an excuse not to reform American police, I don't even know what universe you're in.
I cannot get enough of her laugh. I don't think that people really take into account how much this woman has been through, and the fact that she is alive, happy, and laughing right now is an absolute miracle. Not many people would be able to let themselves be happy after half of the stuff she has been through happens to them.

With that kind of a past, jokes can't never penetrate that thick skin. But Americans have no hardship thats why everyone is extremely sensitive. No WW2 veteran would be up an arms by a dark joke.
Yeonmi is such a beautiful and amazing woman in so many different ways... One of the most awesome and inspirational people I've ever had the opportunity to listen to.
I feel like this interview with her was way better than the one on Rogan. She showed a lot more personality here. Rogan focused on her being a victim and survivor, it was too serious. This one was much more interesting and the boys asked great questions. Thanks Flagrant ! She is an awesome guest !
idk if it was better, but it was definitely more entertaining. i think its good that her pod with Rogan was don first though, because it really was more effective in showing the heaviness of all the shit she went through than it did here.
She’s seriously the best guest they’ve had in a while. She’s been through absolute hell and the fact she’s an actual example of someone who has every right to be a victim and act as such but she refuses . It hurts to know someone with her outlook went through so much I’m glad she’s here 🇺🇸♥️
Not gonna lie, she came off as a liar at one point. So I looked her up and yea, she has history of exaggerating her story knowing she could make money off of it.
