    After 50 years of motorcycling on many different motorbikes, many of them so called premium brands, I bought a 1050xt new last year and it's up there along with a couple of other bikes from over the years as one of the best bikes I've ever owned ..........love it..

    Using a wide spectrum of metrics, of all the bikes I’ve owned over the years, over ten years the ‘Strom has the lowest cost of ownership. Sadly, the cool kids don’t buy it so don’t expect a crowd to goggle it at the café - damn near impossible to posture hubris. Decent bike at a decent cost.

    I bought my 2014 as a leftover in 2016 for a little over $8000 US. I’ve got 39,000 trouble-free miles on mine. It averages about 53 mpg US, and will haul my wife and me with no sweat. Mounting and dismounting can be an issue until you learn to treat it like a horse and climb on in a similar fashion. I told my wife it would be my last new bike when I bought it 7 years ago. I thought I was being facetious, but it’s still here. Other pre-owned bikes have come and gone in the interim, but I’ve still got the VStrom. I had a previous generation DL 1000 and a 650. The brakes and suspension are so much better I can’t go back to the 650. My bike isn’t that much heavier than the 650-they’ve gained a few pounds since the 2014. I’d highly recommend one to anyone capable of handling it.

    I think the 1050DE is a great looking adv bike, but every time i've test rode the 1000/1050 Strom i find myself preferring the 650 for its lighter weight and more nimble feeling. But if i rode a lot with a pillion, the 1050 would win with its extra power and especially its extra torque. Also the suspension is noticeably better on the big un.
    Horses for courses, but any Suzuki is all good by me.

    Haaha. Nice one. I've just got back from a trip to Scotland on my Vstrom 1000 2018 model. They all share the same engine which is actually 1037cc. Effortless cruising and plenty of tourque for a bit of squirt acceleration when you need to take advantage of a gap in the traffic, something you can't always manage on the Himalyan.
    Uncle Stu says people who have a small man sausage only ride the bigger bikes but I have to disagree as I don't have a small man sausage and the wife will vouch for that :)
    But on a practical note the larger bikes are more relaxed and as you say they feel "Planted". My Himalayan which I love for slower roads will manage the motorways but it is tiring to ride on those roads and your also riding it at it's maximum output

    Nice review!!! Moto-journalist typically do not get exited about V-Stroms. It's understandable, if you ride Italian spicy bikes, any V-Strom might seem bland. And they are a bit is bland. At the current price point the new V-Strom is playing with some pretty stiff competition as well. But a V-Strom will go 200k if maintained. My 2014 1000 has 38k. It looks and runs like new. Not one visit to the dealer. Not one mechanical problem. This why V-Strom owners crow so much about there machines. You can have a good day or a bad on any motorcycle, it has more to do with variables such as weather or your state of mind ( going through life issues? ) and less about whether or not you're riding the latest Ducati.

    I really like my V-Strom 1050xt (Bertha), it does the vast majority of my total annual mileage, it does the commutes, tours and scratches bends without fuss, it's comfortable, get about 56mpg no matter how hard it's ridden, only gets washed about twice a year and all without a single fault.
    Bombproof engine and handles quite well for a fat heavy old bloater.

    " The more things change , the more they stay the same ".
    The big VStrom has been around a long time in various forms [ rather like Dr Who ] .
    A rock solid bike . I have a Gen 1 that I cannot bear to sell , these days it only gets used when one of the other bikes needs work done on them .
    But I know that I only have to put a battery on it and it will take me to the other side of the world without fuss and bother .
    What does it taste like ? Well [V]Stromboli of course !
    This generation is the best looking .

Once upon a time, I fell off with the old super tenere 750 that belonged to one of my mates.. The fall was after I stopped and did not manage to keep the heavy and tall bike up. The V Strom 650 isn’t the baby of the V strom series the DL 250 is ,& there is also a newer V strom 250 single cylinder ,Sold in India Australia & Latin America . All the V Stroms are value for money & much more than the sum of their parts . I have never had a Suzuki break down on me ,in over 50 years of motorcycling , only ever had the odd puncture . Good review 👍

    • @TAYM
      @TAYM  Год назад +2

      Yes I had a DL250 as a winter bike a couple or three of years ago. As you say, it did everything I could have expected 😁 when I refer to the baby I meant the v twins. Like you I have had a good number of Suzuki s over the past 40 years or so 😁 never had a bad one 😁 thanks MA 😁

    • @maskedavenger2578
      @maskedavenger2578 Год назад +2

      @@TAYM The DL 250 is now my main bike as I am nearly 70 & have health issues ,& have been gradually downsizing for the last 15 years . I noticed riders of larger adventure bikes were only doing speeds of about 20 - 60 mph most of the time & only really going faster on motorways ,which I only ever do the odd section or two ,when absolutely necessary . I also have a couple of 125 machines for local nipping about . I don’t believe in such things as biking seasons or winter bikes ,any bike I own large or small ,has to cope with being ridden all year round in any weather . If I wanted more overtaking power & regularly used longer stretches of motorway ,I would choose the DL 650 or maybe the Honda CB 500 x . I have never had issues with Hondas or Suzukis ,but whenever I tried different makes ,I had nothing but issues & breakdowns . I get what you mean about the v twins ,it is a bit odd calling a parallel twin a V Strom ,but that’s Suzuki they like to be a little different ,that’s why I like them . 👍

    • @TAYM
      @TAYM  Год назад +1

      @@maskedavenger2578 absolutely agree 😊 I did a fair bit of dual carriageway on my 250 😊 no problems at all. I am not that keen on constantly cleaning bikes and so when I refer to a winter bike I mean one that is easy to clean or doesn’t matter if I don’t, some don’t do too well😂😂 I do well over 20,000 miles a year in all weather, riding everyday and having a bike I don’t need to worry about and has good service intervals is also important. 😁 thanks MA 😁

    • @maskedavenger2578
      @maskedavenger2578 Год назад +1

      @@TAYM I never worry too much about the odd bit of surface corrosion or the odd scratch in paintwork ,that can always be easily sorted . A bike that gets used regally is bound to get the odd chip or battle scar ,just from stone chips on the road alone . I don’t worry about service intervals ,I change the oil & filters regally ,do the valves when due ,the ones due every 300O miles are usually screw & locknut adjusted so really no big deal . All other things get changed or serviced as & when needed by me . I don’t do the kind of big mileage I used to do ,when I was younger ,& this DL 250 is a great utility & A& B road adventure bike & handles surprisingly well for this type of bike. I would need oxygen fed helmet to go faster than 70 mph these days,as my lungs are knackered ,& I would be gasping for air . The only fault I found with the DL 250 is the seat material is too slippy & I need a mesh cover off the bay of evil ,to stop sliding into tank .😎👍 PS I have subscribed been watching & enjoying some of your content on RUclips 👍

    Do i sell my 1987 gsxr1100h? Had her for 22 years, but now I find my back and neck ache after just 30 miles! I want a sit up and beg style bike. I like the 1050de, I like the African twin1100! They gota be some bike for me to sell my old gixxer!

    • @TAYM
      @TAYM  Год назад +1

      That’s a tough call 🤔 of course if money allowed you would keep the gxsr as an investment 😁 but if finances don’t allow, I think you would find the Vstrom the most comfortable of the two. Neither are going to make you feel like the gsxr does 😁

      @@TAYM I don't need the money. I'm a truck driver, they throw it at us for some reason! I rent a room, always have! I'm 48 with back problems! I adore my gixxer, work of art! Yes prices are going up fast! She not perfect, but she honest! Worth about 7k! Can't keep everything forever.....but I know I'll kick myself if I let her go! When was the last time you saw one?

      @@terrystratford1235 exactly 😁 in my view the Vstrom is underrated and the Africa Twin overrated. But the AT will possibly hold its value better simply because of the inflated reputation 😁 ps keep the gsxr 😁

    I'm keeping an eye on this bike, in the 21" version.
    But I'm looking at the africa twin crf110 and adventure sports. I think between Suzuki and the base version of the africa twin, I'd go for Suzuki, but adventure sports is superior to Suzuki (It's also more expensive.) The CRF has a tube tyre, has a small tank... Deep down I don't know if I should give the extra money to adventure sports... I'm really undecided.
    Can anyone give me an opinion? lol Between the 3? What would be your choice? Money to value decision also... Thank you

      Traction control on that bike be switchable Traction control & probably not road mode.
      Trident 🔱 had switchable Traction control but I leave on still very cautious since accident & Abs is not switchable.Definitely need switchable Abs on a Adv bike & nearly all do.
