- Suzuki invited me out to Greece for the launch of their new Vstrom 1050 and 1050DE models. I spent the morning on the 1050 for the road ride, and then the afternoon on the DE model in the mountains.
I had a lot of fun testing these new bikes, although, I did NOT expect to be riding in near freezing temps with MORE snow - IN GREECE!

Very good Richy and refreshing not to hear the word 'cheap' used for once. Suzuki's are great, not overly flash but they deliver on their promises. Look forward to your long term review.
Well said Colin!
Looking forward to seeing what you do with it 👍 great to catch up buddy! 🍻
And you mate. We had a bloody good laugh, eh?! 👍👍
I like to ride from mid February to mid December, as long as there is no snow. If you're scared of ice, i recommend you not riding below 3°C. Of course ice freezes at 0° but the thing i want to share is, the road is usually 3° colder than the air in winter. Or if youre riding to work, watch temp at night!
Just a piece of info for people who also try to ride all year long.
See my recent snow series. 👍
Had the DL650 now on the DL250, love Vstroms, they always sound good, easy to ride, and will do the job all day long
With its renowned engine, it’s definitely the one you’d pick for a round the world adventure. Great bike that continues to over deliver and under sell.
Totally agree!
Greetings from snowy Northern Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 😀. I have a 2019 650 and am looking forward to upgrading. I think the 1050 regular with heated grip option is a great fit. My local dealer is awesome. Cheers, fellows. Chops review was very insightful as well.
It's great to show everyone that riding a motorbike is a good year! 🙂
great review Mr. Veda. Who'd have thunk it. Snow in Greece for the second time in many, many years
I did order the regular 1050 and it should come in few weeks. Always loved the Vtwin engine and for 2023 the bike has it almost all, great to see TFT and quickshifer.
Congrats. I’m sure you’ll love it 👍
Fabulous Film Richy, I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with the new 1050DE as you welcome it to the Wildbad Stable.
Great review Richie, thanks, cannot wait to see some of the videos with the long termer, if they are as positive as this one then I think you'll have helped me make my mind up for an adventure bike. This video is the only one I seen so far that properly gets the sound of the engine note for the VStrom ( I may be doing Lamb Chops a dis service there) and it sounds great. Keep up the great work.
It really does sound good. We passed comment about this several times on the launch 👍
Awesome review buddy that’s a bike to really consider with how it sounds and looks I’d buy one👌🙏
Good video Rich, looks like a hoot out there and I'm looking forward to seeing more when you get your long-termer. I used to own a Vstrom myself, 2010 650 GT, K9 with the big cat eyes, and it was a brilliant bike. Reliable, economical*, practical, and it remains the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. However, with Suzuki removing the V from the V-Stroms and moving now to a parallel twin, I'm very concerned that the Strom will lose its heart and character.
* Economy wise, I had a camping trip with a mate in Wales. I filled the tank in the Brecon Beacons, fully laden with panniers, topbox and tent on the seat, and then rode all the way back to Lincoln, where I had the misfortune of living at the time, and then rode to work the next morning, and then finally filled up again on the way home. I averaged across that, even with the commute, about 66mpg. Cannot go wrong, really can't.
no ned to upgrade there all brilliant bikes no matter what year.ATB
Damn, Suzuki, you've outdone yourself! Content to stay with tried and true but stone age tech for the longest time, they've finally untracked themselves. This is the only true V-strom anymore; not some imposter parallel twin that somehow rates a "V" in the name. Call the 800 just a Strom, or I'll never touch it 🙂 Scratch that, I just can't go with a parallel Strom.
Great review 👍 VStrom is unfairly overlooked, either the 1050 or the 650 (had 2 of these). Oh, why am I not surprised to see you and snow associated in the same vid, again 😂
You and me both! Haha
Great video of the launch Rich. Be interesting to compare to the Big Lad, and see what you do to and with it. Love the 'Bullseye' music and the outtakes at the end!!! Thank you
A lovely balanced review Richie. Great sound track and personable. All the best.
I get the impression that once I get tired of the mindblowing power of my GSX S-1000 GT, this will be a nice bike to switch over to.
Same here, although I'm not so sure I could part with the GT. I really like these VStroms.
Styling reminds me of the DR's from the 90's
Hi Richy,
This video with all the nice new VStroms makes my VStrom 1000 from 2018 feel very old now, but it is still a very practical bike.
It will be interesting to hear your thoughts in the future after you've spent some time with the long term bike and to see how it measures up to the Big Lad:)
I've got proper clocks and an LCD screen on my Strom and gurt great mirrors too:)
The snow made the V-Strom stand out. I didn't see any motovlog in that weather before.
Check my current series “outer Hebrides” you’ll see plenty of it! 👍
Great video again love the music and the bike sounds nice also Great riding shots and photos, nice to see bloopers I think you should show more of them if you do any more it adds to it all I think the blue colour is differently the better choice. I hope the big lad doesn't get upset with the suzuki when you get it .
I am such a fan of your videos! Watching this makes me want one, even though I'd never buy one...too much for me to handle & it's way too expensive. The quality of your vids just draws me in; the crew took such fantastic clips of you on the bike, too! The bloopers at the end were hilarious! Thanks for putting out vids...really appreciate all the nuances of scenery, people, places, and the positive outlook on life. It is truly inspiring.
Thank you, Wheels! Really great to hear from you. Hope AZ is treating you well? I’m sure it’s a lot warmer than Greece! C
Nice one, Sir.
Safe, happy travels 👍
Nice bike. I own a 2014 model myself. Nice to see the gold colored front fork again.
As bike reviews go that was a great watch Richy, although I did pucker up when your back end let go on the gravel!
The intro shot was stunning!
Yellow for me only cus i loved the old Dr Big when I was a kid.
So you'll have the Big Lad
And call the new one Dr Big 😂
Looking forward to seeing the comparisons and the journey unfold.
Safe travels 👍
Ohhhhh I like the look of that. I'd have the yellow please! Way back in the day, I had a DR 750 Big. Very similar style. 😁👍
Great ride mate. Ride safe.
Just brill, looking forward to seeing you on the Suzuki when you have changed the tyres and you give it a bit of stick. 😜🤗👍
Some great scenes there Richy
I have the 2014 vstrom 1000 love it. Only wish I had cruise control. Hopefully you like it and if you want it to sound good. Put a two brothers racing exhaust on it 😎👍
Bruce Bruce Bruce, what can one say ? Another stonker (no not one of those 🤣) I’m not sure if your wheeling sometimes or you got ya throttle on the stops anyway that’s what I like to see absolutely fantastic with the added bonus of like minded, keep safe 👍 and keep it on the stops !.
The yellow is even a grower but that blue and white is nice. The glass sparkle black on the current bikes is a nice colour also
Love the outtakes, Richy. You and Chopsy should get together and collaborate. That V Strom looks good.
Maybe one day! 👍
another great vid riche
Something that everyone wants to know but Ive yet to see a reviewer of these two bikes mention is the difference in handling characteristics between the 19" and 21" on the road..as the VSTROM with 19" is such a sweet handling bike on the road..Would upgrading to the DE with 21" compromise the road character and to what degree ??..Also with the longer travel suspension ? and how that performs on and off road.
Great question, Dr. Sous.
Genuinely, I couldn’t feel any difference to road handling on the DE. Not sure if that’s because I’m used to a 21” on my AT or not. Certainly didn’t feel any less confident or connected with the bike on road. 👍
@RichyVida Thanks Richy.Appreciate the info.Great vid as always love the content.cheers.
Refreshingly relaxed review Richy, ( that’s some R’s😂)
Certainly makes you think about taking a look at it instead of jumping straight to the usuals 👏🏼👌🏼
That’s me, Simon! Cheers 👍
They both look good, nice to see a TFT on them now. Nice vid👍
Yes it’s a lovely screen. Nice and crisp.
Felt uncomfortable but still cracked on with it 😂😂😂. Cracking viewing as usual chief.
It’s surprising how cold it is in Greece this year. Loutraki is an awesome destination for holidaymakers in the summer. Love your show Rich. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts about how it compares to the Africa Twin. Thanks again and keep the great content coming.
It actually snowed for just 3 days in that region but it happened to be during the testing! Tough luck
Totally my fault, Dimitris!
@@RichyVida hahaha I'm sure it'll rain on my wedding day as well, no worries😂
Your channel is growing slow but steady 👍
Slowly is the main word there 😂😂😂
Richy you are a blessed bloke. 👍🏼 I’m surprised by the look of this one. Quite a handsome ride. Let’s see ya get on with her for the long term test, (🙏 the blue). Ride Often and Ride Safe 😎 🇺🇸 🌎
Thanks Bradley 👍
Looks a blast.
Interesting bike, looks like it’s got the Africa twin in its sights. In fairness Suzuki make some great motocross bikes so they should be good at this. They need to get the weight right.
looks like a great bike Richy and pricewise also at a great pricepoint! For looks they definitely went for a look back at the infamous Dr.Big 800 which is not a bad thing in my view !
Great video
Looks the part just wish that massive exhaust had been slimmed down also who was it that dropped there demo bike ?
Can’t remember his full name, sorry. Lovely bloke, and all is ok 👍
Good review richy 👍 nice bike prefer the DE one be decent with decent tyres more off road orientated.! Be good to watch it on your long term review , hope the big lad isn't the jealous type 😮😁 ! Like a spring day for you compared with your trip up here .😮👍👍
Looks like chopsy had a good Christmas he he
Hello Richy, sorry not been commenting recently, haven’t had the time to watch the videos, tbh some have been a tad long but I can understand why they were. Keep up the good work
Great review, looks a great bike, too tall for me at 5'4", lovely 💯
Looks a lovely bike Richy, love the blue
Me too. Really stands out.
Would be great if we saw more shaft drive bikes on the market.
It's already 554 pounds, a shaft would make it even heavier and it's already overpriced for what it is or lacks.....a shaft would make it even worse.
I might see you on it up at the cafe on the Yorkshire moors , the secret hidden away one that no bodies aloud to talk about 👍🏻
Haha 👍
Looks like a very capable bike, I do like the Vstrom, its one I considered when I got my 2014 Explorer XC last year. You looked like you were enjoying sliding the back end around, think the display looks better with the night colours.
Yeah me too. Have the AT in “dark mode” all the time, too 👍
Hi Richy enjoyed the review you snow magnet you. Must say in todays inflated bike prices I suppose the new V-Strom is the Dacia of the bike world, I think their has always been a snobbishness towards the 650 and the 1050, but it's always been a bloody good bike, and with a bit more tech it's spot on, I do hope it's a success, just sad the 650 has been retired in the UK. Looking forward to it being a long term loan bike of yours. Thank you.
I hope so too! Always the underdog, but always does the job intended without a single bit of fuss. This new one has definitely stepped up a notch. In all areas. I really hope so, too.
Great reviews Richy, pity about the snow - again !! Is that Dango gripper the one fitted to helmets on the Dango link ?
That’s the one. That’s what it’s designed for, but I use mine for everything but that. Stick/stand/grip it to anywhere. 👍
Nice bike .
Looked like fun .
Nice looking bike! It's interesting we haven't seen the bike yet here in Japan. wondering how will you compare it to the Africa twin?
Oh really? Strange! Looking forward to getting one to play on for a bit 👍
I have yet to see a Suzuki Adv bike on the road in SA? Think new price it too high against its competition.
Interesting to see how it sells in SA.
Improved it a lot.
greetings from Turkiya! I just discovered your channel, you produce really good content, I wish you success...
Thank you very much!
@@RichyVida You're welcome
This bike really grown on me! I think is gorgeous
Me too!
Very quality bike I'm lacking this bike
Looks an awesome bike Richi ,cheep aswell ,for what size bike you get
The DE looks a great bike and good value but what was Suzuki thinking making the front travel 170mm??(Unless my info is wrong).Thanks.
What boots are those? I see that they're TCX but I can't see the model and they're not listed in the dooblydoo below the video.
TCX Baja. Superb boots 👍
Be nice bike, lot less maintenance cost than a gs. 🤓 be interesting how Long Term review goes 🍻😎🏍💨💨💨💨💨👍🏻🇨🇦
Wif of ice and snow nowts a bother to richy snowman☃️😉😉 ps owned a xt for two and half years brilliant bike but im getting auld for its weight so sold ...atb 👍
Happy that you're getting one of these. I just hope it doesn't become a successor to the big lad 😉
Since you've got it for a long term loan I'd love to hear how it compares with the GS1250 and Tiger 1200...
Wow that blue1 nice.....are the foot pegs still slightly high like all the other vstroms?fine machine I really like that blue 1 you rode.would you trade your africa twin???
I didn’t notice pegs being higher than normal? Will see how I get on when the blue one arrives! 👍
That engine sounds sweet! For reference, could you provide your height, weight, and inseam, please? Were you able to touch both feet at a stop? Thanks for the insights. Shaft drive a BIG plus, in my book.
Engine sounds great and something a lot of us commented on when hearing the bikes go past. I’m 5’10. The DE version is noticeably higher than the 1050 (which you can easily flat-foot)
its a long way from the orkneys richy/so richy which are youv getting a LHD or a RHD bike?
Oh it’ll be the RHD 😜
my main issue with this machine in the showroom is the footpegs are too high for my 6'3" frame.
Great review. I'd love if Suzuki brought out an Orange/ White colour scheme like the old XT.
How does it compare with the Tenere WR?
Never ridden one, so can’t comment. 👍
Nice video Richy with some great observations the bike looks good and especially in that blue, You've seen enough snow lately to last a life time, take care mate.
Yes I have. I’m totally done with it now 😣
Hope you get paid well riding in that weather 😬🤣🤣🤣
But are you keeping the ATAS ?
I’ve never been sure about this bike.
A few years ago I nearly bought one.
This does seem better..
Can I ask. Did you ever get your suspension set up on your twin ?
If not I recommend going to Kais suspension specialist in Atherton, for off road set up 👍
Oh sounds good! No, all I’ve done is stiffen both front and rear quite a lot. No, not getting rid of the AT 👍
@@RichyVida oh that great news that your not getting rid.
Well what you have done probably is okay.
But I had mine done the other day, ready to give the trails a try.
And wow. What a totally different bike it feels.
But yeah you probably know what your doing with the suspension.
Anyway. Can’t wait for a bit of riding videos. From the suzuki. But so glad your keeping Big Lad.
Yes I hope to meet you one day as I keep saying 😂 don’t know if I’ll be able to make the ww3 this year. So I might have to just bump into you somehow this year 😂
All the best. 👍
Nice doesn’t look too bad mate
Look like you had a bit of fun on that
Seriously richy how can you rid with that pinlock
All them bubbles in it that wood do my head in
Can you actually see clearly for it?
If It was me , I’d give it another go mate
Looking out you can’t see any of that. It’s just outside looking in. I’ve since shaved a bit out of the Pinlock, so it’s seated perfectly now with no touching 👍
@@RichyVida that’s a good thing you can’t see them bubbles m8 but I still wouldn’t be able to ride with it it would drive me insane lol
One little question that helmet you are wearing is it comfy? And does it have speak cut outs for Cardo speakers my helmet is doing my head in
One side of the helmet, the speakers always
Pushing against my ear thinking of getting the one you got i like it
Sorry did I just hear you say the 2023 suzuki still has linked brakes? Not front and rear abs? Thats crazy they still using linked in 2023
Front and rear (switchable) ABS, yes. And yes, linked brakes 👍
@@RichyVida oh switchable abs? Nice
It’s not a bad way to earn a crust is it?
Is your Pinlock sticking to the visor? It should not, mayby needs readjustment on the pins.
Yeah, pins at the loosest setting, too. I have since filed out a tiny bit each side so fits spot on, now 👍
HOW YOU SET UP MICROPHONE WITH GOPRO
Media mod and external mic 👍
Which mic model? Can you tell me 🙏🏻
👍👍👍
Given the expense of hosting these press launches, it would seem to be cost effective to put better off-road tires on the test bikes, something like TKC 80s. I wonder why they don’t?
The bikes have to have the recommended tyres as per manufacturer but yes, I agree. 👍
Are the de tubeless?
Bizarrely only on the rear!
@@RichyVida how stupid is that 😵🤣 thanks for answering sir🇳🇴☕
To me riding in the snow is just out of the question, not even worth questioning.
You are much older than me, you seem to be long into motorcycle, so you must know the definite probability of slipping away so why do you ride in snow? Or i should ask, how and why do you ride so surely in the snow, almost any other rider would rather walk to poland than ride to work in winter.
This is a genuine question, i am not mocking you for riding in snow i find it great to see people in the community take a challenge and enjoy riding.
No issues here, Ibraham 👍 check my Outer Hebrides series - particularly Ep4 👍
Great review on a underrated bike.
What’s happen to global warming 🥶
Be brave; stay wild.
Top man!
Nice vid mate,i reckon they'll sell shed loads just on the back of changing the headlight,
PS That white stuff seems to follow you everywhere,so do me a favour mate, dont come visiting family,,,lol ;-)
Ride Safe Mr B \m/
Haha mate, I’m so over the snow now!
It's $20K in Canada !!!! That is way too close to other premium brands for it to be a success !!!! The 800 DE is going to sell well but this model will struggle at those prices. You can buy a Tiger 900 GT Pro for the same money!!!!
Wowzers!
One criticism that end can isn't a good looking thing 😕
Are they ever? 👍
First (from Iceland 😂)
Oh cool! Are you riding, Pilts?
@@RichyVida unfortunately not. Just doing the touristy thing. Stunning place 👍
Tube front and tubeless rear, 554 pounds and $16,600 USD before tax and registration without some basics like heated grips ah ha ha. Fail before a mile is ridden. DOA
A good value bike ,but not a fan of the looks of the two bikes
too much tech for me , good review though
