All New Suzuki Vstrom 800 DE - Have Suzuki Done It Again?

  • When Suzuki design a motorcycle they do so with longevity in mind. The Vstrom 650 has been one of the best, if not the best, all round midrange motorcycles for around 20 years. That why when the Vstrom 800 DE was announced I wondered why! How could Suzuki improve on the 650, especially with a parallel twin. Could Suzuki have done it again?

Hi TAYM sat on this back to back with 650 at the nec show. There was a significant weigh size and height difference for me. I bought a 650 as I could barely get my leg over the 1050. I also thought it was less handsome than the 650. I like Suzukis and am sure it will sell in droves. Quite a jump up in price though

US based, was in the market for a good mid sized adv bike. I live in the mountains and the bikes are used for true offroad and twisties like Tail of The Dragon.
After 6months I had my choices down to a T7, Aprilia T660, Africa Twin and the 800DE.
The AT was 1100cc, out of the running, as it was big and also the airfilters are a pain in the butt to access.
The Aprilia was OK, but dealership in my area was questionable people.
The T7 was uncomfortable on long rides, but awesome offroad
The 800DE was good and comfortable but more expensive and the lack of aftermarket parts is not ideal.
I ended up buying the kitted 800DE with bash plate, crashbars and hard panniers for now.
When the aftermarket catches up, I'll get a lighter exhaust, soft panniers and a light lithium battery which will save weight.
I am an ultra light backpacker and my entire kit for a full week is 20lbs, including food, tent, sleeping bag/pad/clothes, water filter, 20k battery, etc.
When my friend with the t7 and I went camping for the week I was 20lbs lighter all together than he was. He brings alot heavier camping gear than I.
My point is, the paper stats are misleading in real world applications.
I was lighter all said and done, and retained all the comforts and tech, an extra gallon of fuel, and more hp.
The most underrated aspect of the 800DE?
The suspension. It is really really good. I'd say it is just as good as the T7, but my friend thinks it's actually better the his t7.
He is selling the t7 and getting an 800DE.
I've got the metallic black/blue and he is getting the yellow/blue.
If it had cruise control, Suzuki would have a real problem selling a 1050

No doubt it's a very good bike but for shorty's like me it's basically out of the question , a shame as the original Triumph Tiger 800 subframe design allowed a low seat option that could accommodate even the shortest of people ...(I owned one for 3 years). I have a wee just because it’s a great all round road bike, and I’m glad it has a 19” front and tubeless rims, means I’ll never be stranded as I always have tubeless repair kit with me. They were a commercial failure because the idiots in the motorcycle press didn't like them. It became one of my all-time favourite bikes and I'm glad to see the engine continuing to do well in the larger V-Strom. I'm now riding a Beemer 1250RT: bought it to match my pipe and slippers.

I test drove this bike and I do confirm high vibrations on the foot pegs around 6K-7K revs. Also an other thing I have to mention is the large amount of heat comes from engine when in traffic and moving in low speeds. It is like having heated legs with this. I do confirm that it has great torque from low revs unlike Transalp, great suspension, great breaks, great siting position and it feels much lighter that a 230Kgr bike. It is also very maneuverable in traffic. It is quieter from Transalp in term of exhaust sound.

Hello and thank you I’ve been waiting for this for a long time, for the color i prefer yellow the historic color for motocross at Suzuki.
For the power we can really think about it WE all love these! But on our road with repression and limitation is it reasonable ?? That's why I say I miss my 650 single cylinder so much.....to my Djebel.
But for me this bike is a real success too bad it is so expensive.....a little less power,so a little less electronics assistance, no need for quick shifter ....and we get an accessible motorcycle for freedom of all, Royal Enfield has und erstood this well with its Himalayen. They will just increase the displacement and horsepower a bit and thus win the mid-displacement trail market. And let's be frank all those bikers who ride 120 to 200 horsepower motorcycles without electronics the hospitals would be full.
But I admit I would pay for this Suzuki.😀👍✌️🇨🇵

@@TAYM Much like yourself the real naughty boy stuff either happens off camera or is cleverly edited. We had one bum twitchy moment ( on camera) in the Twisties on a damp road, which has previously only happened in much colder weather. The sooner those Bridgstones get swapped for Road 6's the better.
Off camera I was sitting next to a campervan at lights in a merging lane. The driver revved a couple of times so I revved back. He and his son were smiling. He then began a sort of drag launch revving on the clutch. I thought "he can't be serious" 🤔 Sure enough he launched off blocking my chance to merge. I opened the throttle to feel the front wheel lift, closed it, opened it, the wheel lifted again, soon he was behind me. I heard my son saying "did I just feel the front wheel lift there" "yes son" I replied, "thankfully traction control kicked in to stop it lifting further" 😕🥴😲😂

Not rode one yet, but from riding the 8S i know how good that engine is. But this new Strom isn't for me, not keen on the looks, the colour options, or its extra weight over my Wee. Also i wouldn't ride these big adv bikes off road, so i dont want 21" front, spokes and tubes. Yet to see if this new p twin will be as supremely reliable or as good on fuel as the 650 v twin. So engine gets a 👍from me, but i definitely wouldn't trade my gen 3 Wee for this new Strom.

A capable bike with a lot of useful features like adjustable suspension , but lacking in some areas ie no cruise , no tubeless tyres and heavy .
However Suzuki know their market and what they can get away with .
A competitor would be the Moto Guzzi V85tt at a similar price , but Guzzi has shaft drive and air cooling benefits .
Did Suzuki buy a job lot of paint from the Navy ? Battleship Grey and Yellow ? Yuck !
Like all VStroms , the styling is somewhat of an acquired taste , but that won't affect some folks who just want a reliable bike that will do long distances without bother .
If it were a dog , it would be a Pitbull , a big friendly grey one that wants to please everybody .
