  • The Rode VideoMic NTG has the ability to plug into a Camera, Smartphone and a Computer, but I noticed it sounds very different in each of those things.

    Hope you guys don't mind all these nerdy vids, but since the VideoMic NTG is still fairly new I wanna go over everything I learn about it. One this winter season passes we'll be back to making dope videos! 💪

    Did you notice that, when connecting to iPhone, you need to open the rode recording app to adjust the input volume before using on other apps. If no pre adjustment at each plug in, the volume sounds really low.

    • @FrogyProd
      @FrogyProd  2 года назад

      I didn't notice that actually. I don't really think I tried using the mic in other apps

    Is this bad for talking heads and podcast, as it's super focused to one direction with the audio? I'm just afraid that if I move around, it will sound weird. They say that the video mic pro on the other hand, has a wider range.

    • @FrogyProd
      @FrogyProd  4 года назад

      If it's just one person on a podcast it should be good. If you're trying to get 2 people on the one mic it might be a little strange or you gotta sit close together and face the microphone.

    Great video FrogyPro, I have seen many reviews on the VideoMic NTG but you're the first to compare it using different input devices.. Well done and a great video. I look forward to more.

    I was wondering if it's possible to plug the NTG to a phone via USB (using a usbc to usbc cable or usbc to lighting cable or something). It's not really advertised or talked about (I couldn't find anything) but I don't see why it can't do that.

    • @FrogyProd
      @FrogyProd  4 года назад +1

      That's a good question but unfortunately I don't have anything USB-C. I feel like it would work though I don't see why not

    I have a Sony a6400 and I hear straight static when I plug in NTG. I’m not sure what settings I have to have everything on but it’s a lot of static and I don’t see that coming from other peoples videos. Do people edit it out every time when recording as a shotgun mic or what?

    • @FrogyProd
      @FrogyProd  2 года назад

      Hmmm I don’t really get static, but it may be your cameras internal audio recording levels are too high. I usually keep my internal audio at a 9 and then boost it in editing. Try that out!

    Good video, but the audio is pretty bad, you have some high pitch background noise, fyi you probably need headphones to hear it.

    • @FrogyProd
      @FrogyProd  4 года назад +1

      Yeah good point, although I did have to use my old broken video mic to record this video since I was holding the NTG in all the shots :P

    Fantastic video! Hopefully, a USB C to USB C from the Rode to my Samsung S20 will improve the audio onto my smartphone compared to the set up you did.

    Hi, wondering. Will it be sound better with Rode SC-15 usb C to lightning cable direct to iPhone?

    • @FrogyProd
      @FrogyProd  2 года назад

      Yes it will! I actually got the SC-15 cable recently and it unlocks both channels of audio instead of the one. Basically a higher signal

    Was thinking about the NTG for my on the go setup to plug into my iPhone, but with the sound quality lowering from when it’s plugged into camera to when it’s plugged into the phone. I’m questioning if it’s worth it. I run a Rode video Micro atm and I’m wondering if there’d be a difference?

    • @FrogyProd
      @FrogyProd  2 года назад

      There's a new cable Rode sent me called the "SC15" it basically connects to your iphone through thunderbolt and allows a higher qualtiy signal as well as dual channels into the iphone. Really stepped up the game for using the NTG and a iPhone

  • @switchunboxing
    @switchunboxing 4 года назад

    yeah man it can sound different depending on the device. Also, the settings. If you have it connected to a camera, you're going to hear more noise because of the camera's pre amp I believe. In this case you would want to use the features designed to help with that. Also, I was waiting for the smartphone test.

    • @FrogyProd
      @FrogyProd  4 года назад

      Yeah I just had the camera audio set to Auto because when you flip it to Manual, there's infinite possibilities with it. Just wanted this to be a simple plug and record test.

    That hiss in the camera is the Canon preamp (they are notoriously bad).

    What if I leave the Rode NTG permanently connected to my computer via USB? Will that degrade the NTG battery?
    I assume it will because my computer is on all day when I work and it'll probably trickle charge the NTG battery, just like when you leave a laptop connected to the wall socket.
    I'm hoping this isn't the case though, hence why I'm asking.

    • @FrogyProd
      @FrogyProd  3 года назад

      Honestly I'm not sure, but you're probably right about that. My question is why would you leave it in the computer all the time and not just plug it in when you need it (unless you use the mic all the time)
