  • Each of the "wonders" in the ancient world was intended to symbolize the builder's political and economic power, and to serve as a template for future monuments to such power. In most cases they succeeded: the statue of Olympian Zeus was used as a model for portraits of Napoleon and George Washington, while the Colossus of Rhodes influenced the design of the Statue of Liberty. This was no less true for the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, constructed for King Mausolus during the mid fourth century BC in southwestern Turkey (modern Bodrum). Created by the leading sculptors and architects of the Late Classical period, the design of the mausoleum was so successful that it was repeatedly used for buildings commemorating the burials of famous politicians, such as Grant's Tomb, while the word for a monumental tomb in most languages is "mausoleum", named after King Mausolus.

Hello, an excellent & enjoyable lecture, but I do think it contains a couple of errors: firstly the description of the excavation by the the Knights Hospitallers of their excavation (in 1522) clearly states that the tomb-chamber of the Mausoleum was not looted in antiquity, but rather that they uncovered it, but didn't have time to enter it before darkness fell & when they returned the next morning it had been entered & looted. Secondly I think that the lion captioned as coming from Halicarnassus is actually the Lion of Knidos, which is today in the British Museum Great Court - it looks much too big to be one of the many lions from the Mausoleum.

      Yes. Slowly people are beginning
to realise that Turkey contains just
as many Wonders as Greece and
Rome. ! I visited first time 5 years
ago and was quite stunned . I go
back regularly and tell everyone I
      know to do the same.

it would be apt to call the place Anatolia instead of "Turkey". The name Turkey didnt exist until recent times, namely, the 19th century. Nor were any Turks in Anatolia until the Battle of Manzikert in AD 1071--less than a thousand years ago, or the time of William the Conqueror of England! But the presenter is a Turkophile, speaks Turkish and therefore, at ease to inflate Turkish nationalism

I totally agree with you! In all of his videos he is not using the correct, standard archeological terms "Anatolia" or "Asia Minor" but he is rather abusively using the terms "Turkey" and "ancient Turkey" (a totally anachronistic term). The unsuspicious viewers are somehow making a connection between these great ancient civilizations and Turkey - as if these civilizations were mere constituents of "ancient Turkey"!!! So, apparently professor Brian Rose is supporting more the Turkish nationalism than the historical truth!

@@ThomasGazis The fellowship/grant money (in reality, a political bribe) people receive, along with the fringe benefits (exposure to media, advertising, conferences) and perks (free travels, more cash for "research")--all speak louder than truth. It has always been like that to all. B. Rose is no exception talking about "ancient Turkey." gabble, gabble!

Penn will not be welcome for future 'digs' in Modern Turkey if this 'professor' doesn't follow the Turk narrative.
I heard the same narrative by the 'professor' at New York University regarding the ancient Greek city of Aphrodisias in present day Turkey. He would not even mention that inscriptions were in Greek.
Also, as you state this is all part of a deliberate obfuscation of ancient history.

maybe you are just another turkophobe in the youtube comments. Is this consistent for all countries or are you writing this only under turkish-related stuff. I suppose so as you sound really biased with your "fascist arguments". I guess, you are from greece or armenia or you are simply deepl connected with the enemies of Türkiye. Ancient Türkiye is valid as ancient Anatolia because Anatolia is Türkiye and vice versa. Everything in Türkiye belongs to the turkish people, outsider ;)
(btw, it is already multiple times proven, that the current population is mostly native to these lands, thus it is their property by blood anyway :P )..
