  • Cliff Burton of Metallica is considered by many to be the greatest BASS player in the metal genre. Unfortunately, Cliff passed away in a bus accident while on tour with Metallica in 1986. Cliff and Dave Mustaine of Megadeth were close friends, so when Dave heard the news of Cliff's passing he had an emotional meltdown. He went to downtown LA and purchased heroin to medicate his pain. It was during this time that he wrote "In My Darkest Hour." A track inspired by the accident. This track is a brilliant piece of music that utilizes guitar orchestration and music theory. Get on Dave Mustaine's level and take my music theory course below. It's time to sign away your soul to the dark side muhahahah!

    My favorite megadeth song.
Burton's death was the inspiration for this song, but the lyrics are not mostly about him. Hes in there though, just Dave is talking about being so isolated and also Mustaine explained that he treasures his relationship with his fans, who have shown him the kind of support he didn't get as a kid and relationships and pain of losing someone close.
Dave is a complete genius. Hands down. All there is to it. His songs are so dynamic and straight forward. He hides nothing. He lets it all out.

I think sometimes he got too much criticism for not having enough feeling or sounding robotic on his solos. Dave might not understand the terminology but he definitely understands music theory. It is much like Eddy Vanm Halen. Eddy railed against theory passionately and yet there was so much about his writing that conveyed an intimate knowledge of how scales and chords are supposed to fit together. The beauty of what they do is that they are not bound by the rules so they can go off script in a moment's notice and yet somehow they always manage to make it work in such a tasteful and beautiful manner that makes us mere mortals scratch our heads in disbelief. Dave Mustaine is a Metal Guitar God! When "United Abominations" came out with the opening track "Sleepwalker", this was a total realization. The Guitar break is too insane.

I love this song! So Far, So Good...So What is my favorite Megadeth album!
By the way, the music was written with Cliff in mind. The lyrics are about Diana once again. Dave loves to write love songs about Diana. 😂

Kiko said Dave doesn't know music theory? Jeff Young said the same thing. Chris Broderick and Dave both said he seems to understand theory even if he doesn't know the proper terminology.

💥😎💥Shred, I would Reckon that some of Cliff and Dave's conversations may have included topics such as, I don't know, perhaps Music Theory! Shred, before you even got in your first rebuttal to Kiko, I knew one, that Kikos vid was a rebuttal to yours, and that two, Kiko was wrong...Dave must've told him to be quiet because we haven't heard a peep on the matter after his second limp wristed respone...great guitar player, though Kiko is, Open Source and No Gravity, the one with Enfermo as its first track are the best...AHT HAHAHAHA!💥😎💥

To be fair, you can establish a solid grasp of something without technically "knowing" it in an academic, textbook type of way. You can even demonstrate this understanding without being able to explain your process within the parameters of the prescribed academic formula. The fact that someone isn't able to articulate their actions using the conventional language of a particular discipline doesn't necessarily mean that they don't understand said discipline. Ppl absorb things differently and conceptualization can vary wildly from one person to the next. Maybe it all comes down to how you want to define "knowing" a particular thing... I guess some ppl mostly look at it through an academic lens while others see it as having more to do with application. One aspect might tend to overshadow the other in some cases, but I don't think they have to be mutually exclusive. Either way, Dave is definitely an extremely talented musician who thoroughly understands the finer points of writing incredible songs and his application is like no other. I'm just glad we've been able to enjoy his music all these years and I'm really glad he finally seems happy with everything he's accomplished.

I prefer Chris Broderick as Megadeth’s lead guitarist. Check out Headcrusher and Death from Above*, they really showcase the guitar work both Mustaine and Broderick were capable of. I just don’t think they’ve been able to replicate that intensity since Broderick left.

My oldest sister has the same birthday as Cliff Burton. 10th of February. She died of a heart attack last year, at the age of 30
Ironically, I share the birthday of Lars Ulrich. 26th of December. Although I was born in 2001, but anyway.

Look folks , Metal and Rock Guitarists don't want the public to know they know Music Theory because these Guitarists want to seem self taught . Being a Music Student like
    EVH
    Randy Rhoads
    Steve Vai
    Jimmy Page
    Paul Gilbert
    Slash
    Steve Lynch
    Reb Beach
    Marty Friedman
    Chris Broderick
    Russ Parrish
    Michael Angelo Batio
in a Music Institution or getting Music Theory lessons is looked down upon
George Lynch once said he didn't know Music Theory / Modes / or Scales if someone put a gun to his head . But he makes countless instructional videos in the 80s demonstrating Paganini instrumentals . Then he mentions 3rd 5ths 7ths , Major / Minor Notes / Chords Shapes Phrases Passages in his instructions that would contradict his assertions .
