- This is the other issue with this Honda. The Clutch barely engages and it needs a new transmission. (Geared axle) At the end you can see it ratchets going forward and not backwards.

Useful video. However, I think most "won't roll back" issues are caused by seized bearings. I dismantled mine and polished them and the mower now rolls back OK. However: I think I could have done it by just removing the wheels, the cogs and the clips behind them. The axle will then move sideways and you can clean the axle with sandpaper. You might even be able to free them without dismantling anything and just spraying WD40 into the bearing from the inside. Having freed mine I think I will spray lubricant into the bearing from time to time. If I ever take it all to pieces again I'll drill a hole and put a grease nipple in. Pity Honda didn't do that!

We have a Honda HRR216 that came with our house, 20 years ago. It was at least 3 years old at that time. We opted to buy the contents of the shed and it was a deal. The Honda mower and a 70's Troy Bilt tiller (in perfect condition), along with a host of other high quality tools and power equipment, all for $1,800.
We used the mower for 10 years without any issues, then, the drive started to slip. Eventually, the wheels would not drive at all. The mower is too heavy to push on our partly hilly grounds so it had to be fixed. Honda wanted over $200 for a new tranny. I had a look at the transmission without removing it from the machine, just removed the spring to allow cover (and spring anchor point), removal, far less work.
What I found inside (besides no oil), was the bevel gear that engages the worm drive when the clutch is engaged was worn to the point it did not mesh anymore. At the time Honda would not furnish any parts, full trans unit or nothing. So, we were stuck. But, then I realized that if I took the bevel gear out and flipped it around, I'd essentially have a new gear. So, that's what I did. Then I filled the case with 90 gear oil and put the cover back on.
The fix worked for 10 years. Then, last week the wheels refused to roll backwards (they did not do this when I made the original fix), and, the drive was very weak. Once again, I opened the trans case and for a second time found no lubricant. The bevel gear did not show any wear though. What I surmised was that the clutch cable had stretched and could not actuate the gear to worm drive. With these earl models there was no cable adjustment. This time before putting the bottom cover back on I filled the upper half of the case with grease and gear oil. Then, after setting the mower back on her wheels, I took a small bolt and, after forcing the cable back through the conical spring at the bail handle, dropped it "down" the spring so it acted as a chock. That effectively shortened the cable. The drive then worked like new once more. After this cutting season ends I intend to drill and tap the case and install a drain/fill point so the Lub. can be replenished far more easily. I'd like to get another 20 years out of this machine.
We have an acre of grass so the mower has high hours after at least 23 years use but the engine remains strong. It does not burn any oil !. I change the engine oil twice each year and use crank flush each time, that goes a long way. With the first fix 10 years ago, the drive wheels were completely bald so going uphill was frustrating. Honda was asking way too much for new ones. So, I bought a bicycle tire (the knobbiest one on offer), measured the wheel circumference and cut the tire to match. Used self tappers to "retread" the wheels. As the rubber is very much more subtle than the OEM plastic, the grip is impressive, better than new.
I'm getting older now so, giving some thought to fixing-up our 62" three blade Massey garden tractor mower and using it with our 1977 Massey Ferguson 1655. No more walking those many kilometers to mow......................

A much easier way to attach the heavy duty clutch spring is to remove the belt from the engine pully and transmission pully. This will allow you to rotate the transmission around the drive axel giving easier acess to where the cables are mounted. Much much easier to remove/attach spring.

Nice video, but can’t believe Honda would make a plastic transmission case,. I’ve seen a few these fail. They totally streamlined their mowers that they sell at these big box stores. These newer style Honda’s will never be around like the older HR 214-215’s!

I use a nylon rope tied in a loop and passed through a hammer handle, then I pull the spring back onto the arm. Afterwards, I just cut the rope. No crazy spring tool needed. Nice video though. I worked on More Honda and Toro mowers this year than any other brand.

Had the same issue with my Honda HRR216VYA. Just removed and adjusted the direction of the pinion gears on each drive wheel and adjusted the Smart Drive cable. Works fine now nice job Bruce!

I hate reinstalling those springs. I was hoping you had a better trick ;) I had to replace a tension spring on a zero turn and the hook of the spring had to actually fit into an eyelet thing. I ended up using a ratchet strap attached to a tree on one end and a cabiner one the other to stretch that spring out and fit the end into that eyelet. I wish I could say Honda transmission tension springs seem easy now but they are still a PITA.
Springs are often tight. If i had an actual small engine shop there would be something I am sure. Remember I am a self taught back yard small engine mechanic.

They are not labelled. Mt advice is to buy a set where each size is it's own plier.

great job on the repair bruce,if you can get a trampoline spring puller it would be easier to use than the spring puller do hicky thing you was using,even tho it got the job done it just seems a bit frustrating trying to work around the blades,do you plan on looking into the other trans and see whats wrong with it

@@BrucesShop hahahaha.... Yeah my favorite is an old 82 snapper high vac push mower, 3.5hp briggs, with points and condenser, that thing runs like no bodies business, I use it from time to time, and for the leaves during the fall months it's truly a vacuum doesn't leave a leaf on the ground.

Depending on the brand/model of mower, transmissions can be expensive. Although I've only had to replace a couple of them, mostly I have to replace the drive wheels (the type with the plastic ring gear).

When you hook the shift cable back up, what position is the speed selector in at the handle?
It set itself to what it was and the trans.
Is it possible to swap a different transmission in? I’ve found that transmissions from other Honda mowers are only about $50 (20001-VL0-S00) and while I wouldn’t have the 3 gears, it would at least have some drive to it.
The cables would be an issue. Deck size too, But It would be fun to try. Let me know if you do it.

I changed out my trans.. and now when I engage the clutch.. it dies. Doesn't seem to go when running.. but if I manually turn the blade, and have the clutch engaged, I can see the drive shaft and wheel turn a bit... I don't get it.
It is very hard to shoot a trouble over the internet. Can you tighten the cable that engages the trans?? It may have adjustable collars.

You can make one those easy just get some good wire and a piece of metal.
The 1/2 moon part under the pinion gear is a Woodruff Key.

Whats the mower speed after replacing the transmission? I have a mower like that but it’s really slow, maybe a new transmission will make it faster
Have you done cable adjustments or a cable replacement? Much cheaper to try that stuff first.

No It came out and was plastic.
It's quite a job using that improvised spring tool. Although it does work, you might want to get a more efficient tool if you do a lot of springs. Harbor Freight (maybe Princess Auto too) has a t-handle spring tool with a small hook at the end for under 5 bucks (last I knew). I have two. They work well on automobile brakes, trampolines, and various other devices that have extension springs. Just an FYI. If you're happy with what you have, that's fine. 👍 Are you going to tear-down the bad transmission to find out what the exact problem was?

@@mgomez5606 it depends on who makes them and what they're for. There are some specifically made for trampolines, auto brakes, washing machine door gaskets, and furniture springs. There's at least two kinds of pliers types that I've seen, and I have one kind for drum brakes on cars. Just search EXTENSION SPRING TOOLS, or SPRING TOOLS.

I Bruce. I just ordered s 3 speed transmission for this Honda commercial grade mower I paid $35 for. I intend to disassemble the old transmission just to see why it croaked. My guess is corrosion. I had to replace the transmission, the carburetor, the cables for the extended front wheels. all 4 wheels and I am hoping thats it. It has NOT been a good time fixing this mower. My Next Honda has a badly bent crank shaft. I plan on replacing that.I have about had enough of working on Honda mowers. They suck.
They are sure hard to work on. I am doing one this afternoon too.
