Can My Dog Adapt to a Bike Trailer? First Time Try | VLOG 5

  • Winston and I used to go on a lot of bike rides together, but he's 12-years old now and can no longer run the distance. So, I bought him a bike trailer.
    The plan is to be able to go on bike rides together, and when he gets tired, he can chill out in his trailer until he's ready to run again.
    This video is of me introducing him to the trailer and seeing what he thinks of it.

    I started watching this channel because I'm thinking about building a teardrop trailer. I'm checking-out people's experiences camping in mini-trailers. Now I've become addicted to watching videos about Winston. I love his happy tail; it spins like a powerful propeller, moving him along. He's got such a sweet personality. It also looks like he did a pretty good job selecting a human companion.

      pressure lower is great. Super hard is form on the road only, dangerous even on gravel. You still need to feel enough pressure when you press you thumb into the tire to feel if it is right.Being able to press it lightly in is often good enough.@@Roz.S

      @fourbyforester 6 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, tire pressure is science, not rocket science luckily :) The trick is to adjust the pressure according to the load. So, Winstonon 2 wheels under his carrier can have a lower pressure than an dult person on a narrow wheels bike. Just any pressure under super hard will make a great difference. I cannot talk about exact numbers because every tire width ans size needs another pressure. Have fun 😊@@Roz.S

    Hi. To give Winston a softer ride you can lower the tyre pressure on the trailer, 20 to 30 psi would make a good stating point. I think your front mudguard is on the wrong way around.

    • @Roz.S
      @Roz.S  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah I thought it looked funny, but I actually took it off and tried to do it the other way (longer bit down the other side) but it wouldn’t fit and then I stared at some poor instructions for a while before fitting it the way you see in the video. it will be easier to attach a bike rack to a trailer attachment point on the back bottom of the van rather than putting everything on the roof and taking it off. most pet trailers have a leash attachment point inside the trailer to keep dogs in side. some pet trailers do not have a solid floor inside. I would look for a foam or honeycomb core fiber reinforced panel. any piece of plastic is likely better than what is in the trailer. a synthetic or wool blanket will be sufficient cushioning. not cotton which will not insulate when wet and never dries. hardware stores will have different types of pins to attach the wheels easier. Roseanna Sunley is a great mother and friend to Winston.🙂

      I always tow a caravan so I don’t want a bike rack on the towbar because I think the nose weight would be too heavy, hence it’s best if the bike just goes on the roof. The trailer does have a leach attachment that I can tie him to, but I think he would panic more if he was restricted. But an extra pad for cushioning is a great idea 👍🏼 Thanks so much for sharing, watching, and commenting.

    Front mudguard is on the wrong way round I think. The shorter section should face forwards not backwards.
    The trailer looks like it's bouncing around a lot because you have the camera mounted to your bike, so the movement of the trailer looks exaggerated, as half of the movement is the bike but as the camera is fixed it looks like the bike is not bouncing around and the trailer is bouncing around excessively.

    • @Roz.S
      @Roz.S  6 месяцев назад

      Yeah I tried to fit the front mud guard the other way but it doesn’t fit. I took it off and tried to refit it a couple of times (edited that bit out) in the end I just left it as it was. It kinda does the job and I was more bothered about the rear mud flap (and they were super cheap) Good point about the camera!! I didn’t feel that bad to me on the hike, but looked like a terrible ride for Winston 😅

    We have the same trailer for our dog - I believe it’s a DoggyRide trailer, we have the Mini as our dog is quite small. We’ve done rides of up to 40 miles with her in the trailer, but we stop and let her out for regular breaks. She also likes to run along with us, but we only let her do this on off road trails and only for about a mile or so.
    We’ve had the trailer since she was a puppy and she’s now nearly 4, so she is well used to it. We put a memory foam cushion in for added comfort.

    Another excellent vlog. Thank you! My dog - a patterjack, is a senior too, but last year tore both her cruciate ligaments, successfully surgically repaired, but this has massively affected her mobility. I did the Monsal Trail last Autumn and hired a bike with a dog trailer. It was so bouncy in parts and the gravel kick up from the bike wheel left her covered in grit, a lot went in her eyes. It made me decide not to buy a trailer. I have instead bought a K9 kurgo back pack and think it is better for me than using the bike carrier, although 10kg of dog on my shoulders and back is hard! I have also succumbed to buying a dog pram for away days in more urban areas. We just adapt as they get older so when tiredness or lameness happens, it doesn’t stop the adventures!

      I love this!! I hate having to leave my dog at home. They may get older and not be as physically able, but they still enjoy being with their human on an adventure. So happy to hear that you and your dog are still making memories together. 🩷 Thanks for watching and commenting.

    What a little trouper he is!! Great video. That trailer looks like a miniature Go Pod when it's behind the bike.😂 To perhaps make it a little more conformable for him when on the trails, have you thought about lining the floor of the trailer with a thick sponge pad to absorb someone the bumps and shocks. You can buy different sizes and thickness of sponge from places like Dunelm.

    I enjoyed the ride...Winston did really well, my dog would jump out. Is it possible to lower the tyre pressure or fit balloon tyres onto the bike trailer to soften the ride? You've probably thought of this already...

    We have a Bichon Frisé called Dolly who is about the same age as Winston. She hasn't quite got the same energy levels as he has though. We had a similar trailer when our two kids were small and they loved it. I refrained from making them run ahead though. LOL
    In the main I used it for the school run, when my daughter was in primary school. Before I bought Mega Breadvan.
    Unfortunately, I gave our trailer away. It could have been a good thing to use for Dolly!

      I plan on putting the bike on the roof next to the roof box which will have our paddleboard in, and then put the dog trailer in the back of the van, and then the caravan behind. I think all of the weights should be fine, but I need to take it to a weight bridge just in case.

    I bought the same trailer for my dog. Taking the wheels off I find quite easy, but on assembling I find it needs a lot of strength to fix the cross bar into position as it seems a really tight fit. Did you find this so?

    • @Roz.S
      @Roz.S  6 месяцев назад

      I did find the cross bar a bit fiddly and tight, but managed to get it in okay after a few tries. At least it feels secure when it is together (and I know the wheels won’t fall off since I can’t get them off anyway 😅)

      Yep, the front mud flap isn't right. I tried to fit it the other way but it wouldn't go fit - I had it on and off several times (edited that bit out of the video). In the end, I just left it.
