I believe not letting his live concerts be available on RUclips was a mistake. I’ve seen many comments where people who were not as into him when he was alive say that they did not realize how great a musician and live performer he was until RUclips began showing more of the live stuff after he died. Many have subsequently become fans or, at very least, have come to appreciate his talents more as a result.

His disastrous promotion strategy for the "Sign of the Times" record is another huge mistake he made. That record could have sold 10 million copies worldwide, if he had bothered to make proper videos, release the right singles in the right order and done a proper North American tour.

Which singles would you have liked to have been released (and what order)??
And anyway, I agree with you wholeheartedly about what you said. Especially about the music videos - this goes for pretty much all of the videos from the 80s.

For the people saying Prince shouldn't have let so and so go, fired, whatever you want to call it; they're wrong. In order for Prince to "grow" and be a better artist he had to bring in fresh ideas, fresh people. I liked the fact that he changed up his musicians. I think it would have been boring for him to keep the same people. I see someone said the worst mistake was letting Lisa and Wendy go. NO ! They served their purpose for a certain space in time.

There’s SO many things he could of done differently to be more of a commercial success. That’s not Prince though. Part of what plays into his mystique is the decisions that he did make. It’s unfortunate that there’s a whole generation out there that doesn’t really know him. In the end, there’s no one that even comes close to his genius. Everything that he did is part of his story and it’s why he’s the greatest artist to ever live.

I appreciate this video/analysis. Too often too many followers of Prince want to pretend that everything he did was perfect or the fault of someone else, but the truth is, he made a number of glaring mistakes, several of which are highlighted. Too often, he refused to listen to counsel of others and surrounded himself with 'yes men." As great as his career was, it could have been so much better and there is so much more we could have experienced. The one thing I would have added/included way the way he went about suing the fan sites. That caused a lot of bad blood among some of his fans, and signaled a number of problems that followed.

I think Prince and MJ both made the mistake of falling for the industry created illusion that they were rivals. They both had the same message: LOVE, heal the world, take care of the poor, take care of children, respect animals as sentient beings, etc. Not only were they born just a few months apart they were both musical and artistic geniuses and black men in America who rose to enormous wealth and power. There are a number of parallels in their lives. I think they were both sent here by God to help humanity ascend from this 3D reality that is dominated by the very same negative souls that in the end took them down. They were different in many ways and yet similar enough to have done something enormously powerful together.

I believe one of Prince’s biggest mistakes was not touring SOTT, Nude and D & P tours in the US.
SOTT was very successful in the states, as was Batman, and D & P spawned a #1 single. The span of time between Purple Rain and Batman albums... Prince could do no wrong! The decision to focus on Europe and Japan, excluding the fan base in the US was a mistake financially, but also I believe he lost many of his fans in the US as a result of out of site/out of mind.

  • @JoeyDamocles
    @JoeyDamocles 4 года назад +49

Prince is tied with The Beatles as my favorite musical entities of all time... HOWEVER, you could do a whole series of videos on Prince's bad decisions. Especially post Purple Rain. Releasing Around the World in a Day while Purple Rain-mania was still in full affect. Although Under the Cherry Moon is actually my favorite Prince movie (Well, it's tied with the Sign 'o' the Times concert movie), making that film in black and white and having his character die at the end, were both bad choices. Christopher Tracy could have been shot but then pulled through and learned the error and his selfish ways and lived happily ever after with Mary Sharon and Tricky... all in beautiful living color. Haha. Then not making a legit music video for any songs off Sign 'o' the Times until the album had been out for months! Crazy mistake. You could go on and on... When you mentioned that Prince might have just needed better advice from those around him, I believe he was getting that advice but was ignoring it. If you read the book "Let's Go Crazy" about the making of Purple Rain, Prince was so focused and open to ideas from others to make that project a success. It's a shame he couldn't have kept that attitude for the rest of his career. But ultimately, the music is what's most important and he made so many incredible songs you just have to accept the stubborn, paranoid, control freak quirks he had as part of the overall package. :)

    My “food for thought”...
    1. Prince not singing Bad with MJ - I think he made the right choice. Two completely different artists and they both wanted that individual spotlight. And the two big egos would have prevented it from becoming a reality anyway. I love Susan Roger’s story about Prince getting that phone call!!
    2. Prince should have kept Jimmy and Terry on PP label. I agree, it would have been a HUGE success for him, but his ego and need for control would have never allowed it to happen. I don’t think they would have ever agreed on $$$ terms either.
    3. $100m record deal: Agreed, big mistake during that time. His sales were way down compared to just a few years prior. Another poor decision made by his ego.
3.TMBGITW/Come/Gold/1-800-NEW FUNK: What I have read is that the intense WB feuding began even before he recorded TMBGITW, and WB thought he would fail at promoting his own song. Prince wanted to release a triple set at that time - The Dawn - to which WB refused. The conflict delayed any releases, until Prince relented and gave WB the final track list for Come, but he refused to promote it. He had already moved on to Gold. WB refused to release Gold with Come, so Prince had to “sit” on it for awhile. Many interviews during that time (94-95) where he discussed his frustration about not being able to release Gold. Yes, a big “CF” all around, but I don’t think entirely Prince’s fault.
    4. Prince banning his music on YT: Agree it was a huge mistake. He lost SO many young new listeners. Also a bit hypocritical, as we know he spent many hours searching YT to find new talent. He should have realized that new fans discovering his music via YT would certainly have resulted in higher sales for his music while also keeping him relevant.
All that being said, he had an amazing career in music even with some seemingly poor decisions along the way. We all learn from our mistakes - even musical geniuses like Prince 😊💜

  • @blackgargamel

Here are some Prince's mistakes imo:
    - not doing a video for Pop Life
    - not releasing the Black album or another heavy funk project like Camille late 1986 /87
    - choosing IIWYG as the second single of Sign o the times instead of Housequake.
    - not touring in the USA for SOTT
    - Graffiti Bridge, shoud I say more?
    - the 1992 contract
    - releasing the masterpiece Power Fantastic at the end of the B'sides record.
    - bad choices of singles after Let it go.
    - not releasing Love Sign on Warner, it should have been a mega hit.
    - not focusing properly on the 2nd Jill Jones album and letting her go.
    ..

I dont think If I Was Your Girlfriend being released was a bad thing, even though it did poorly.
And Black Album and/or Camille being released in 1987 alongside Sign o' the Times wouldn't have been a good move, since his album sales were starting to dwindle (even though he was one of the biggest stars on the planet), and adding a second or third albums would have saturated the market

I say the following with peace and love, peace and love. Prince had more talent in his toe nails than I will ever have.
    1. Losing touch with childhood mentor, Pepe Willie.
    2. Not giving enough creative credits to childhood friend, Andre Anderson. Relationship went sour thereafter.
    3. Not giving enough creative freedom to members of the original Revolution and distancing those relationships as well. The Revolution, including Dez, were more than just side/back-up musicians. They knew how to make his songs even better.
    4. Building and maintaining Paisley Park. A home studio would have sufficed. It was way too costly to maintain. Otherwise, he should have rented the space out or turned it into a music university, particularly for disadvantaged kids.
    5. Not starting a family with Sheila Escovedo.
    6. Wearing those damn high heeled shoes which messed up his back, which in turn, led to abuse of painkillers (allegedly).
    7. Paying lawyers and others to take down all his stuff from RUclips.
    8. Not releasing the Minnesota Dance Theater benefit concert in 1983 as a cd. I think that was one of his best performances- no BS, just straight, soulful music.
    9. Using too many horns and other instruments that made his baNd in the mid 2000s sound like a cheap Vegas act. Should have gone back to his roots like on the Prince album or the Dirty Mind album- but I get it- he wanted to try different things.
    10. Expecting others who do not own the music publishing to work as hard as him. I see this mistake even in the corporate world. The bosses who own the business and who have much more to gain when there is success expect worker-bees to work as hard as them. Ain't gonna happen. Prince burned out the people around him.

I like you guys... I think that one of his greatest mistakes was not being apart of We Are The World... I feel that this hurt his opportunity to be apart of an ICONIC moment in music. I also feel that it confirmed other artists opinions of him at the time. Many other artists felt that he was rude and self centered back then. It was said that his thgts at the time were that there were people who were starving here in the US, and that was not being addressed. But later we learned that he didn't want to be apart of the system, and this event was somewhat of an initiation into the system.

I think disbanding the Revolution without releasing DREAM FACTORY 🏭 was a huge misstep. Creatively he hit a wall after LOVESEXY. Batman was halfbaked and a hurried effort. He stopped trying to put out a viable record with GRAFFITI BRIDGE 🌉 Thieves In The Temple was the only new track while everything else was regurgitated vault tracks. It still baffles me how Prince went from true innovator in 1986/1987 to New Jack Swing Poser in 1991. I am a diehard fan but when he came out with the New Power Generation fluff I tuned out on his music for years and embraced the Alternative music of the 90s. What Might Have Been?

Excellent analysis, The Violet Reality. By the time Prince was against RUclips streaming his music for free, he'd already reacted against illegal music streaming platforms, such as Napster and Limewire. His position on artists being paid for their music was definitely understandable.
But, as someone who grew up in the '80s and '90s, I could kind of see it from both perspectives: the MTV generation and the internet generation. (My first album purchase was Controversy by Prince in 1983; I was in 3rd grade. I think I was in 4th grade when my teenaged cousins took me to see Purple Rain at a drive-in movie theater.) Radiohead definitely took one of the most forward-thinking approaches to the whole sea change in the music industry by, at one point, releasing an album online and having fans pay whatever they wanted, or whatever they felt the album was worth.
But I will say this: I grew up during the 1980s "MTV era" when I got to hear Prince music for free (relatively speaking) on MTV, not to mention radio. That made me ask my parents to buy me Purple Rain when it hit the stores. By the days of Napster, Limewire, and RUclips in the mid- to late-1990s, MTV was no longer the culturally powerful or relevant 24/7 music broadcasting channel it once was during its heyday in the 1980s. So, it's interesting that Prince, a very savvy businessman, didn't notice that. It's like the internet, particularly RUclips, had filled the void left by MTV fizzling out. And, of course, Prince was too stubborn to adapt to the changing times, which, admittedly, have hurt the music industry to a certain degree. But, as Aphex Twin once said: I don't see how [blocking music from RUclips] makes the music any better.

You kind of touched on this in your section about his WB contract, but I'd say his biggest career mistake was fighting and leaving Warner Bros. By the standards of the time, WB was extremely kind to Prince right from the start, allowing him a ridiculous amount of creative freedom. Not only did he throw away an important business relationship that had fostered him through his entire career up to that point, but he alienated a ton of fans (especially casual listeners) who were turned off by the weird behavior he exhibited in that time, changing his name to the symbol and writing "slave" on his face, among other things.

My very 1st TIME commenting on anything on this platform ever.. I am such a passionate admirer of Prince that I'm moved to speak. I enjoyed & respect your comments as a 1st time watcher of your channel.. I believe that not only firing Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis was a HUuge mistake, but also not giving THE TIME artistic freedom at all! Think of the music THE TIME could've imagined with the production talents of the ORIGINAL 7, had they been unleashed! Plus as you mentioned could've been P.P.s version of FUNK Inc. ala Motown.. Morris. Jesse, Jellybean, Monte, even Jerome potentially! Were hit writers & producers in their own collective rights! Another mistake, not releasing certain songs as singles in the 90s hurt him as well.. " One Kiss at a time" Surely could have been a smash!! Thats just the 1st example that comes 2 mind! Possibly not collaborating with Any legitimate Hip Hop artists.. His autonomy with his "dabbling" with hip hop, never gave him any real "cred" within that culture.. Even though songs like "Irrisistable Bitch" opened the door for H.H. to go more "Gangsta", so to speak.. And 1 last little mistake.. Not negotiating with Vanity to where she stayed & casting her in Purple Rain! The chemistry would've been even better between the 3 main characters!, Any way thanks for a place where purple minded people can honestly share!

Hard to say "mistakes" - maybe the part of his personality that made him make some of those less than perfect choices, also made him and his music edgy and interesting.
You could even say these mistakes made him brilliant! 🤷🏽‍♂️

Prince probably didn't like where selling music was going and saw his music as his children. He was very protective when it came to his intellectual property. I understand him. But, I never had the massive hits he obtained in his life. So maybe he could've been flexible when it came to the evolution. I'm happy now a new generation can discover his music.

Thank you Violet Reality. This video production of your's opens the door for a topic that will encourage an articulate and riveting discussion. Your assessment of Prince' career is very insightful. In my humble opinion there were other decisions during Prince' career that could have provided more fruitful results. Certain decisions made by Prince had the affect of applying brakes to the acceleration of his career as a Popular music recording artist and prevented him rising to even greater stratospheric heights. Earlier on in his career, Prince had tapped into a formula that attracted fans who loved his 'Rock genre' inspired compositions. This was evident with the movie 'Purple Rain'. The next two movies produced by Prince, 'Under The Cherry Moon' and 'Graffiti Bridge' departed from that successful formula. It was interesting that the 'Batman' soundtrack presented a 'synth/pop/Rock opera' context that was received by the greater pop buying public with great enthusiasm. This reflected the appetite of a large portion of popular music fans and the commercial market of the time. Prince could have continued producing his 'artistic' love of Funk RnB genre for his loyal fans while continuing to tap into the popular genre mass market of 'Synth/Rock/Pop' genre, which was his bread and butter. This particular genre 'Synth/Rock/Pop should have been continued as the primary music content within his two movies 'Under The Cherry Moon' and 'Graffiti Bridge'. I also believe the decision to produce the movie 'Under the Cherry Moon' in monochrome was a bad idea as that movie was received with bad critical acclaim and disappointing box office receipts. Prince was without a shadow of a doubt a creative musical genius. I believe he let his artistic emotional brain rule his business decisions. He should have created an executive board of project managers to analyse his marketing strategy and direct his career and investments in order to maximise his revenue generating potential. The Rock band U2 are an example of an 80s/90s main stream Rock band who realised good sound business advice that enabled them to capitalise on mass market popularity.

A lot of people bought Diamond and Pearls due to hit songs like Cream and Diamonds and Pearls being on the album. The actual album itself was however very disappointing and included very bad tracks like Push and mediocre tracks like Walk don't walk, Strollin' and Willing and able. There were some other great tracks like Live for Love and Thunder, but they got lost between the bad and mediocre ones. Many fans started to move away from Prince after the success of Purple Rain and this album got many of them back, due to Cream being such a killer hit single. They then bought the album and found it disappointing and it was the final straw for most Prince fans. This was one of his biggest mistakes. Many of those fans never bought a Prince album again and the systematic demise in popularity of Prince began, those that stuck around to buy the next albums "Love Symbol" also reached a stage where they had the final straw and they then too stopped buying more albums. By the time The Gold Experience was released, which by far was the best Prince album of the 90's it was too late and a very good album did not get the credit it deserved.

With all due respect. I am tired of people putting mj as just a singer dancer but prince as Mozart. Complete BS. MJ had instinctively great musical talent and learn lots from stevie wonder in the studio as a kid making songs in the key of life master piece. Go and listen to the demos for songs from Thriller that he did himself they were pretty much complete songs before Quincy Jones even saw them who I felt always got more credit than he deserves on their albums. He even had to fight Quincy for the production layout of billie jean to keep the long intro well they kept it mike was right quincy was wrong. Yes he could not play 54 instruments but it is lazy and unfair to jump to the conclusion that he was more media hype than great artist also.

Interesting video. I do agree that as talented as he was, Prince obviously did have missteps (every artist does). I definitely agree that withholding videos from RUclips & "The Internet Was Over" was among his biggest blunders. But I would also add in his distribution model when he did finally adopt the internet. I'm thinking of his multiple websites that went up & folded soon after, the promise of winning concert tickets (that never happened), & his debacle with the distribution of Crystal Ball where retail customers got access to it first. Yeah, The Truth was a nice consolation, but still. I'm not sure about Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis though. If they remained in the employ of Prince I can't help but think they would've still been subjected to Prince's tight control. Whereas separated from Prince they could do their own thing, which is maybe why they were successful. But that's just speculation on my part. I could be totally wrong! & collaborating with Michael Jackson would no doubt have been financially successful, I don't disagree with that, but it does make me cringe thinking about if it had happened. Keep up the good work!

Other mistakes: 1.) Coming late to the Rap party ("Dead on it" anyone?), then trying to catch up by throwing any ole rap on his tunes. 2.) Coming late to the Electronic Dance Music party, then trying to catch up with any ole EDM producer (I'm looking at you Josh). 3.) No online consistency. Remember npgmusicclub, npgonlineltd, and lotusflow3r? They each had so much promise that delivered for a while, then disappeared. Had he kept up with just one, his online presence would be a force to be reckoned with. How many more albums would we have by now?! 4.) Talking about technology in his songs. That instantly dates the tune. "I scan my computer looking for a site." WTF does that even mean? "Give me a page on your 2-way" is that some kind of walkie-talkie? 5.) Trying to re-write history. You can't take curse words out of the songs. Luckily, he didn't make it too far with this (thanks to Mr. Hayes). Remember the Purple Rain line "You gave it to me, it's not yours any more." That's what I think music is once it's released. It belongs to the fans (not legally, but spiritually), so when you try and change something that belongs to us, it sucks. and finally 6.) Promises, promises. How many projects were promised then never came to fruition? Prince always had musical ADHD. Once he gets the least bit tired of a project, he was gone. That being said, we got lots of great stuff. What do you think?

Not being on RUclips until he died means that he's fresh it means he probably reaches less of an audience but for those who do a little work and get there the rewards are greater because you're not tired of something you're just finding it's new and fresh which may or may not be good for his career since he's not here to enjoy new fans but as a fan from the old school all the stuff that's coming from the vaults all the available stuff on RUclips is a joy to partake in

Your point about Princes refusal of his music on RUclips and streaming services is definitely unfortunate. I’m 26 years old and big fan of Bowie, Madonna, Michael Jackson etc. But never managed to get into Prince for this exact reason. I obviously had heard the most popular songs but very rarely if by chance I was listening to the radio. It’s a shame because I feel like a fake fan for loving his music after his death because I only really started listening to the majority of his discography after his death when it was made available on streaming services.

On 1 hand, I understand why Prince didn't want his music to be accessible on the internet. And that's because artist don't get paid when their music is put out there on the internet. On the other hand, RUclips is a major marketing tool for artists to showcase their music and talents, and Prince would have reaped the rewards by allowing the public to become more aware of his music and talent. I'm glad that the Prince estate is allowing for Prince's music and videos to be shown on RUclips. Now the world will understand why Prince is such a revered artist!

Some may/may not remember when Prince kinda alienated most of his music base by shutting down fansites, fan zines and trying to assimilate others. I'd have to DIG deep to find the exact year but, people sold years worth of collections and put him on the back plate. Some of us came back arms opened and ears ready. However, the Purple community was not happy. How many came back, I don't know... This is my opinion and my memories. Does anyone else remember the year this happened and how it may have hurt his career?

I believe his biggest mistake was signing the $100,000 deal with Warner Brothers. Prince was looking at the money and biggest deal at the time and not what the fine print on the contract. Especially how much each album had to sell in order to get the 10 million per album in return. Michael Jackson and Prince working together on "Bad" or "Batman" I don't think would have worked because their styles were so different and their egos would have also gotten in the way.

I definitely AGREE with your opinion that Prince really should've collaborated with MIchael Jackson! OMG, both of those guys were AWESOME musical artists. I imagine that the COMBINATION of their TALENTS would've been one of BIGGEST FINANCIAL WINDFALLS in the history of the music business!! Working with MIchael would've been a TEACHABLE moment for Prince, I think. I thought that Michael was more of a businessman than Prince was. But if Prince had worked with Michael, I imagine that Mike would've probably given the 'Purple One' some GREAT business advice. I imagine that MJ and Prince did eventually form a friendship towards the end of their careers. R.I.P. to both of them!!

@Saffire Channing OMG thank u for saying this. Michael had purposes with his bussines moves, such as spreading message to more people and putting his race on higher level. He knew how to do things like that, if Prince collaborated with him, he would get attention he deserves and I bet they would make masterpiece together. The thing is, commercialising urself and doing bussines things doesn't make u worse artist or smth. For example, Michael was way more then just a singer and dancer and his real abilities many people dont recognise. So yeah they should do stuff together. At least I am glad that Prince has great estate, they do really good job💜💜

YES. He should've made more rock songs (and not necessarily funk-rock like Chaos and Disorder). But at the same time, he should've done more straight-up R&B songs, without mixing in other genres (like his first 2 albums).
