    Hi Jake! Cheers from LA for the great work (as per usual). An exciting camera. I'm definitely someone in the know, we occupy a lot of the same technical communities and speak a lot of the same language. But I nevertheless wanted to say, your explanation of global shutter in this video in particular, is the most articulate and most concise explanation of it I have heard. I've heard it explained by dozens of technicians, camera operators, and manufacturers in person, as well as hordes of youtubers and videomakers, and I believe the way you put it is the way that best describes it for the person needing an introduction to what it is. And that's no small task. So the next time I'm asked what one is, I will just show them this. Just person to person, I appreciate that level of care and attention. It can be difficult to remember and focus on effective communication when we get to play with such exciting, intuitive tools. So thanks, mate. - Soren

    This is the third time I've felt a true seismic shift for DSLR style cameras. First it was the Canon 5D mark ii recording video, then getting a Panasonic GH5 with 4:2:2 10 bit video, and now this Sony with global shutter in full frame. Incredible milestone unlocked! Can't wait for this to trickle down to other cameras too, especially ones that don't need the stills functionality that the a series has where it will make it more affordable.

    the a9III is clearly for sports photography
    The rolling shutter on my A7Siii is completely sufficient for me and is very good.
    What is interesting in the video sector is the full frame 6K to 4K scaling up to 60FPS. This gives you a slightly sharper video, which looks very good in the 60fps range at 5:32.
    So far, Sony has no direct competition for video in the consumer market. And they know that.
    -Panasonic with the still not perfect autofocus and 4k Corp from 60P and Full HD 120FPS.
    -Canon also has autofocus there and is still struggling in terms of dynamic range and even has an R5C.
    Which doesn't mean that the other manufacturers aren't better in many areas for video, they just lack exactly the points that Sony is ahead of, such as autofocus or lens selection and their design.
    Luckily, that can always change when Panasonic comes out with an S1hII and messes up everything in terms of video, or Canon releases the long-announced R1. Not much has changed since the announcements of the A7SII/FX3 and R5.
    I'm excited to see what's to come next

    When I saw the announcement, my first reaction (as I am not a photograher :p) was "this will go in an FX9 Mark 2". If they can make that happen, with CF Express Type B instead of XQD and the raw output also on the HDMI ike on the FX6, this would be a banger !
    (I've read below that you talked to them about shooting video in 3:2, and I would love that so so much BUT as Sony tends to like segmenting its range and Burano not having it, I sadly can't see them bringing that feature in the A9III or the hypothetical FX9II... But I would LOVE to be wrong :p)

    It’s not the first Full-Frame Global Shutter camera. It’s the first Mirrorless FF GS camera.
    DJI the drone company released a 45MP FF Global Shutter camera with interchangeable lens called the Zenmuse P1. I know because I bought one for my Matrice 300 RTK drone. The P1 costs $6500

    • @87solarsky
      @87solarsky 8 месяцев назад

      The P1 sensor uses a "global mechanical shutter", which is a mechanical, not an electronic global shutter. Big difference! It's only going to provide mechanical global shutter in still image mode, not during video recording.

    • @kpperry784
      @kpperry784 8 месяцев назад

      @@87solarsky I’m strictly addressing the false claims that the A9viii is the first full frame global shutter. Reviewers need to reflect this accurately. The P1 is made for high speed photogrammetry which is the collection of georectified photos called a photdataset which is then processed into photorealistic fully mensurated 3D models. They went with a global shutter in order to allow the drone to fly faster while still capturing non-distorted imagery. It actually takes photos from the same geo location from different angles which help to capture building facades more accurately.

    Is anyone gonna talk about the fact that the sync speed of the shutter heavily depends on on the strobes T time. Weather thats t 0.5 or t 0.1. That’s the real delineation of what sync speed will be most efficient to getting the Strobes FULL Powerput. To get full power out of some 600ws strobes out there, non HSS, the t time stays around 1/200s to 1/300s for the more expensive models. That means you’re real EFFECTIVE *sync speed would be really no more that that. Of course the lower the flash power, it will exponentially grow to faster speeds, some to 1/16000.

    • @AarronAndersonPhotography
      @AarronAndersonPhotography 8 месяцев назад

      t time is the flash duration the.
      t 0.5 being the value of the time it takes for 50% of the flash output to disappear and t 0.1 being the time for 90% of the flash power to disappear.

    a7sIV with the global shutter?

  • @Slipsch
    @Slipsch 6 месяцев назад

    Tbh, I'm not excited at this camera cause I'm not their target audience for this. What I would like to see is to have this global shutter in a ZV-E1 style body (same size), with all the dials (3 of them on the left size), more rugged form factor but still maintain the same size, put in the best LCD possible with A7RV style screen, squeeze in solid state cooling fan from Frore Systems so it doesn't overheat, dual card slots. And for Sony to release 1.8 series of lenses that is matched, minimal focus breathing, same size and weight something like what Panasonic is doing and add in computational photography for "auto" mode for days that I just want a nice picture with one click. Now that would be a dream camera to own. Though it's technologically possible, it's not viable, but let's see what the future brings.

The problem is that consumers are buying their cameras in great numbers, which means consumers do not care about open gate as much as some people think consumers do/should. Base iso for slog 3 is on 2000, ouch that's quite a high number, is there a reason why sony using iso 2000 for the base iso?

    • @MichaelKefeder
      @MichaelKefeder 8 месяцев назад

      As the base ISO for photos is 250 on this camera having 2000 for SLog3 makes a lot of sense, it's 2.5 x 800 the base ISO of cameras that have ISO 100 for photos. The reason seems to be some technical limitation of the global shutter sensor.

    • @aristotle_4532
      @aristotle_4532 8 месяцев назад

      2000 is not that high. It is a very practical iso for adequate DOF in full frame video with lighting at 500lux. You need about 30cm of depth of field in a typical closeup as in a discussion in a film or a tv series. With crop factor cameras you can get 30cm at f4 iso640, so that is where you want good dynamic range in crop factor cameras. The f6.3 equivalent on the full frame requires much higher iso, 1600 for the same depth of field. Photography camera modes do not have enough dynamic range in highlights for use in video, so manufacturers add two stops by using an iso 2 stops lower, base iso of 160 in super 35 and crop factor, and use a lut that boosts the image by two stops to get iso640 shadows and exposure, but shapes the highlights to preserve them, so they remain iso160. That is why the high dynamic range video mode is 640 and not 160. A full frame camera with large pixel and greater dynamic range can probably add 3 stops and still have OK shadows. A 250 becomes 2000.

      Can you please link me a source for Canon's Full Frame Global Shutter please from 2009? I don't think you watched the video, as I did mention that Global Shutter isn't a new thing in video cameras, but it is a new thing that the A9III uses a full frame one. Jake

      @@CVPTVen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS_5D_Mark_II
      Canon + MagicLantern. There are other solutions too, that serious directors and embedded engineers have been making their own camera systems for a while. BlackMagic Cameras have been 4K and Global Shutter since 2012-2013.
      The Sony a9iii is a game changer for people and regular folks that don't partake in (embedded) engineering. We've been using these setups in hollywood, churches, and other pro-venues since about 2008. But the sony a9iii will do what you want for $6_000. Sometimes the color bayer layer is different with sony and fuji and they end up looking purple and green cast of color. So everyone who likes a different color (grading science) grabs a Red, Black Magic, Canon or aria. $6_000 is alot for a regular camera. The most important thing on a camera are the available lenses with a good aperture and auto-focus capabilities.

      There is no mention of the 5D MKII being global shutter on that Wikipedia page. Have you got an actual source to backup your statement? Have you watched the video? I mentioned that GS for video isn't a new thing, it's the implementation of a FF GS which is. Jake

      No, it applies a 10% crop. Small enough to essentially be negligible, but not technically full width readout.

    This is one impressive sensor!! But global shutter sensors are still too expensive for more general adoption over rolling shutter. In terms of a hybrid camera, for $6k you're better off getting the A1 than the A9iii. They are both grossly overpriced in my opinion, but at least with the A1 you are getting a much more balanced set of features on the photo AND video side of things, not just photo.

    it MAY sync with flash at very high speed
    BUT
    the flash that can power enough light at high speed
    does NOT exist
    that is why SONY own slide shows sunset sync.
    ie ITS A VERY DIM flash light.
    its laughable that SONY shows such a pic which can be done
    with regular camera and flash.
    abeit at lower shutter speed. Basically the same shot.

    Serious point. If you think your review is unbiased, after Sony invited you to an exclusive event like this, you don’t understand how bias works. Reciprocity is a powerful bias, subconsciously you’re in Sony’s debt. It’s why they do events like this. And I know, because I used to work at an agency that did this kind of activation for clients, including Sony. The better the event, the better the reviews.

    Rolling shutter is the most bizarre example of lobbying into photography industry.
    It's defective, slow (frame rate), and, yet, largely produced, just because some moron had money and influence enough to make his stupid invention, the norm.
    Sony is also in the vanguard of just-like-human-eye curved sensor, allied to variable aperture lens set-up research. To prove wrong, all the myths filmmakers made out back then, to demeritize human eye capabilities, like the constant hallucination myth. So they can, nowadays, sell "hdr" tvs, with the argument that human eye is less competent than a 2000's digital camera, and it's the brain that make-up all the details in the under and overexposed regions! So, only with an "hdr" tv, you can see, in hdr!😂😒
