@@Whatsgoodmydude2222 for me personally the biggest benefit is eliminating rolling shutter, which impacts ALL video, but only stills taken with an electronic shutter. Obviously another solution for stills is to just use a mechanical shutter. Electronic does have some other benefits, like silence, really fast bursts and pre-capture facilities, so global is great for that but if you don't need any of that, then you could just use mechanical or EFC, which while not 100% perfect, are good enough for most. I have heard from others though who are most excited about eliminating banding on artificial lights, particularly at events - global could be great for them. And of course the fast flash sync folk who don't want to buy a camera with a leaf shutter. But my point it it's a very specific bunch.

@@Whatsgoodmydude2222 yes, most of the higher-end ones have modes which can detect and sync to lighting to reduce banding, but you can still get the effect, plus there's the refresh on LED signage. All improved or not an issue with global, but again my point is it is a limited group who'll really benefit from it.

Focal plane shutters can exhibit skewing as well once the shutter is no longer capturing the full image at once, instead using a "slit" to reproduce faster and faster shutter speeds. So, if you're really trying to freeze motion shooting faster than about 1/250th, the A9 III still provides an advantage. Keep up the good work!

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  7 месяцев назад +5

You're right, but the skewing with mechanical is minimal vs a standard electronic shutter, at least in my tests. That said, I'll be clearer about this in the second part of my review. Glad you liked the video!

@@cameralabs Yeah this would primarily be applicable to people (like myself) who photograph things like cycling outdoors - you'll only see it at higher shutter speeds and if you're panning quickly. I used to use ND filters when photographing bike polo because of this. It's a little counter-intuitive that the faster the shutterspeed the more problematic it becomes. Cheers!

Great video with lots of information Gordon, and in a lot of ways far beyond what most people have shown in their videos.
There is one point nobody has touched on, at least not from what I’ve seen.
First, how long did it take for full frame mirrorless cameras to evolve, surpass DSLR cameras and finally replace them? I’d say it’s almost 10 years now, especially since two of the biggest players have gone that route as well, of course I’m talking about Canon and Nikon.
And it took quite some time and iterations for mirrorless cameras to remove the flaws that plagued the first models, catch up to DSLR cameras and finally overtake them.
So the first mirrorless cameras weren’t really all that good and had a lot of shortcomings, but they were the starting point.
And that is exactly how I see the Sony A9III
Will it be perfect? I highly doubt.
    Is it expensive? Absolutely.
Are all the features interesting to everyone? Nope.
To me it’s not really about this particular product, I see it again as a starting point. And I’m almost convinced most shortcomings like dynamic range, ISO and other things will be worked on in future releases, heck even the price will come down.
And yes, it will definitely take some time, but we’ll get there eventually.
And besides all of this, no more broken mechanical shutter…. Sony A7III 😉

16:06 big mistake here, a mechanical shutter DOES NOT eliminate rolling shutter or banding. It also has a speed, around 1/300s, which is faster than current rolling shutter electronic shutters, but still not instant, which is why you will still get those 2 effects, reduced sure but still present. With a global shutter, those 2 effects are completely gone.

Just in the decision process for a photo-video camera with full frame sensor. 4k absolutely sufficient, planning to use 24p, photo is also important with 24 MPix as a fine compromise between resolution, low light capability and data pollution of my disks :)
The global shutter for video - as you stated - is a big advantage but I learned that this camera isn't the photo beast. But the video of the train accelerating in the station without any artefacts is gorgeous.
Maybe R6 ii first and if global shutter is really needed, rent a Sony and use my Canon lenses with that camera or wait for a lower priced APS-C global shutter system. I propose that we will see some camera soon @ maybe 3000 EUR with smaller sensor and maybe lower resolution ...

24p = judder on panning and motion. 24p was chosen >90 years ago as a compromise between foot per min film use (film was very expensive then) and an acceptable 'suspension of disbelief'. Ie a compromise.
60fps looks way better on motion, and there is not excuse for not shooting 60fps now. You can always drag frames in post if you like the 24fps blurry look.
And, most creatives will be uploading to youtube. Most non tv display devices, phones, tablets, monitors are natively 60fps and your footage will look the best on these devices if captured and uploaded in 60fps.

Thanks for the excellent review. At 8:40 - I don’t understand why Sony doesn’t sacrifice a little bit of the body’s form factor and makes space for CFexpress Type B. One cm more height and 3mm more thickness and they could build in a quadruple card reader for SD and CFexpress B. The CFE type A are less then half the speed of type B and ridiculous expensive.

Regarding ND filters. The camera is a little more than a stop brighter than ISO 100. For most cameras this is moving from 1/8000 to 1/20000, leaving two more stops of 1/40000 and 1/80000. In other words, you have a 2-stop ND filter equivalent in the shutter. If Sony can get this down to ISO 100 in future models, you could leave your ND16 at home, and shoot your 85 1.4 in all daylight conditions, filter free.

I shot some high speed action pictures at 120fps in Hi+ mode at 1/16000th, f/1.8 and ISO 250. In single frame mode, you can shoot at 1/80000th if you ever need it. And for Sony to release 1.8 series of lenses that is matched, minimal focus breathing, same size and weight something like what Panasonic is doing and add in computational photography for "auto" mode for days that I just want a nice picture with one click. Now that would be a dream camera to own. Though it's technologically possible, it's not viable, but let's see what the future brings.

You can't compare a Nikon Z8 or Z9 sensor with that of an A9 III. You are comparing 46MP sensors with a 26MP sensor. Once Sony brings Global Shutter at 46MP, then you can compare.

I disagree. The Z9 is at a similar price point to the A9 III and people would probably compare them. It probably wouldn't be fair to compare the FPS at RAW between the Z9 and the A9III because it is unrealistic to expect 120 FPS RAW with a 46mp sensor. However, I would say if you want the higher megapixel camera then go with the Z9, if you want the higher FPS then go with the A9 III.

You know it is coming however...this is just the first step. Nikon has fallen behind again...as has Canon. They are both great companies...but by the time they figure out global shutter...Sony will be coming out with the next generation. It's another race...and Sony has a big lead...once more. They are a sensor company after all...a big one with very very deep pockets.

@@JACKnJESUS Canon has Global Shutter in their High-end Cinema cameras since 2016. EOS C7000. Global shutter is nothing new. It is old technology.
Don't forget, Sony manufactures the sensors for Nikon.

@@MichaelEpprecht It's brand new... in full frame...which has been the entire story here.
Fact is Canon and Nikon have fallen behind...more. Not sure they ever caught up.
It's a good thing that Sony came along...and Pan. Canon and Nikon had a glacial pace...they have never been so productive in their history...competition is good.

I cant stand in-video ads, on top of the youtube ads.
Either make it a chapter ao i can eaily skip it or I'm out.
The video is just not worth that many ads.

I share your frustration. Unfortunately none of us have any control over ads placed by RUclips anymore - as of November, they put in as many mid-rolls as they like - it's out of our hands. Also it may surprise you that even on a channel of this size, RUclips ads pay roughly UK minimum wage for the hours I'm putting in, so in order to make this a viable business to support my family, I need additional income, which in this case is occasional sponsorship. Unlike many channels which sponsor every single video, I try to only do one a month, or maybe two in the busier seasons. And I ALWAYS time-stamp them so that you can easily skip to the end - is that not working for you when you view this video?
