What a treat to find your video! Three of my favorite gymnasts of all time, Shushunova, Silivas and Bogi!!! This was the best era of gymnastics! Artistry, excitement and drama! The current gymnastics is not nearly as exciting to me
and to see how CLOSE the bars were still then, despite moving them a bit further apart - just imagine how much more exciting their routines woudl have been. amazing they managed to do the skills they could with them so close compared to now!

If Silivas had not shown the double double in team comps with stumble, but rather a full in clean as she showed here, she would have won, with the carry over. 10 in compulsory floor as well, I think Shush only (only!) managed 9.90. I always thought Silivas had the better line on bars, but slightly flat in her deltchev and her geinger, in comparison to Shushunova, whose releases were top drawer difficulty and with excellent amplitude, as well as her full in dismount which was much harder than the shoot front half shown by Silivas (although on this occasion, Silivas nailed the landing while Shushunova had that hop). Silivas was an absolutely wonderful gymnast, one of my favourites. Worthy European champion in 1987, when she taught everyone a lesson! Her joy and expression, musicality and dance, almost flawless technique and consistency, her originality was something special. A worthy adversary to Shushunova, and pushed her hard every step. Shushunova also was a truly special gymnast - without the typical 'grace' of the other Soviet gymnasts of her era, but supremely powerful, unbelievably able and talented vaulter, and showing original, unusual and difficult elements on all apparatus, from her tkatchev variation on the bars, to her Tong Fei arabian roll out on the floor. She also showed incredible longevity to consistently make the incredibly deep Soviet team over 4 or 5 years in the mid 1980s, no mean feat. I would have had a tie for the gold medal, honestly. Both were worthy winners, and (as with Miller and Gutsu), a case can be made for either to have won outright.
i couldn't agree more with what you said above - what if ... i was a budding gymnast at the time and this was the most AWESOME Olympics ever ... one got a 10, the other did, one after each other, there has never been nor will there ever be another gymnastics final like this one. Given i was a young teen, i was rooting for daniela, to me, aged 14, yelena may as ell have been in her 60s lol. Its only been since i have got a lot older that I've been able to see Yelen'a ARTISTRY on floor, as to how incredible that was. i can also say i have never sine seen anyone who comes close to teh expression she does in her optional floor routine ... not even svetlana bouganskya, and that is saying something!!!! sadly, with the change of scoring, the artistry on floor has been lost. its more about skills, which is exciting, but its also meant a huge loss in terms of how beautiful floor routines used to be...
If the Romanian team were the Smurfs, Nelli Kim was Gargamel that day. And she succeeded by handing over the Gold to Shushunova. Kim’s overall scores were shamelessly low compared to other judges. Shushunova great gymnast (rip) but this day Silivas was greater. 👍🏼
The level of Elena Shushunova and Daniela Silivas will be hard to beat. Both were queens. That's why the severe battle in Seoul as champion of the general index that until today I don't know who was the best and if the result was fair.
This was when the Olympics was exciting. They covered multiple countries and teams, created a sense of healthy competition. Instead, now we have coverage of 4 or 5 girls. It’s boring!
I remember watching and rewatching this competition (i videod the whole event) was routing for Daniela to win, she did get most points on the day, but taking into account the team comp, she came 2nd... 😪
If Silivas was to be crowned as the Olympic champion because she outscored Shushunova on the night of the all-around finals in 1988, then Szabo should likewise have been crowned the 1984 Olympic all-around champion because she outscored Retton on the night of the finals.

Both are lovely champions. Silivas was over scored by around 0.10 on her beam and vault routines. I believe Shushonova turned in the best all-around performances in either scenario.
I don't agree. Shushonova had too many butterfly landings where they had to wave her arms in order to stick her discount. It detracted from the overall presentation. Silivas was robbed of the gold.
@@janeswan2474 Silivas wobbled all over the place on beam which is a place she should be better than Shushunova but blew it that day, and her vault was mediocre at best. If anyone else did that same vault they get a 9.7 at best, but since it was the great Daniela Silivas it was given a 9.95, LOL!
I wonder what Shushunova said to Silivas on her way to the beam...also, the comment that judges are looking for original elements (on the beam), seems to have gone by the wayside with the new scoring system, since original elements have to go thru the competition process to be recognized.
That's not what they mean by original elements. In the code of points back in the day they had a section on originality, it was defined as such "A thing is original, if it can serve as an example without having had a model. Referring to artistic gymnastics, we speak of Originality, if new movement forms or newly styled exercise parts or connections are performed, which go beyond the frame of what is cosidered as known, traditional, or classical." and virtuosity was defined is "skillful, complete command of the technique of gymnastic elemens. Based upon this bonus points for Virtuosity will only be given, if a nearly faultless presentation would be performed." That was quoted from the 1985-88 code of points. The code also mentions that a new skill must be submitted three months before the competition or on the arrival to the competition with technical description and drawings/illustrations. The gymnast that submits it gets a .20 originator bonus until another gymnast performs said skill.
Regardless who won, both are amazing gymnasts. However, I prefer Daniella Silivas. In my opinion she’s the better gymnast all around. She’s more beautiful to watch and is the first women to preform certain skills that others hadn’t been able to do in her day. Elena did a great vault tho but the score of 9.8 for Silivas is way too low.
Silivas got 9.95 on vault, which is in fact too high for her. The 9.8 was the score of one judge which was thrown out. Ironically that is more in line with what she dserves than her actual 9.95 on vault as she is not a good vaulter, her huge vault scores are by her name alone.
Yo creo que conforme pasan los años más grandes nos parecen las 2. Tenían estilos muy diferentes, Shoshounova más potente, Silivas más plástica, ambas innovadoras y arriesgadas y representantes máximas de la escuela soviética y rumana...Un empate hubiera sido bonito y más justo yo creo. Ambas lo pelearon y Silivas pese a no conseguirlo ha pasado a la historia como una grande. Elena se fue demasiado pronto, hubiera estado bien reunirlas a las 2 tantos años después y que comentaran esa competición...entonces la rivalidad era máxima casi una cuestión de estado, hoy se habrían reído de eso.

Nice recount... but yes, even Silivas acknowledges that it was the terrible decision by the Romanian coaches to do the double double on floor that led to the silver medal. She had never competed that element before and to throw it in team prelims in this era where all scores counted was a very bad move.
Silivas was the most technically sound and consistent, overall gymnast of her era. Her form and precision was only ever matched by Aurelia Dobre, and that was for only one competitive season. And it's true that the double-double is what likely cost her that medal. But I often think about how the Romanian coaches falsified her age for '85 Worlds. Similarly, Szabo's age had been falsified at '81 Worlds. Bothe were heavy favorites for the AA gold at their respective Olympics and subsequent World Championships. I often wonder if it was karma or if that history played a part in the judging back then.
I prefer Shushunova's style of gymnastics. I never really liked Silivas style. I really disliked that robotic dance sequence in Silivas's floor routine. Great video - Thank You.
Only on floor, not the other events. This situation is exactly why they eliminated carrying over the scores for the next quad. Good choice. Of course, getting rid of the 10 scoring system was an even smarter decision- opened things up and encouraged innovation.
You’re right on both parts. She pretty much fell in optionals but in all-around finals she took a step on her bars dismount. But we all know MLR’s memory isn’t as accurate as video evidence is 😂
well- back then it was cumulative...if it was sudden death like today, neither would have watered down their routines some, and who knows what would have happened.
It was called a Tong Fei, a one and three quarter Arabian roll out. It was a tumble she had used fairly consistently for about 4 years by that point. Shushunova did use a Thomas as her first tumble (and the Tong Fei second) at the 1987 Europeans, and also showed one in 1991, three years after retirement, at an invitational meet.
Shushunova made more mistakes . Step on uneven bars The wobble on beam and step on dismount. Over scored, should had been 9.9, same as silivas. they both should have gotten a 10 on vault. Silivas was better By the way Mary Lou, you were over scored as well. The gold was for Zsabo. You took more steps that were not deducted. And thanks to Kim for giving Silivas a 9.8 on vault. She knew it was the only way she could beat Silivas.

Wow! These countries work so harder then USA at that time! They're so strong and amazing. I remember sit watching them and rooting for them because they were so graceful and try some stunts that USA didn't! I little was disappointed in USA gymnastics then! Now USA and others countries are about equal in gymnastics! They just don't do stunts like they use to! They shown strength then and I see some on the uneven bars and going they some on the floor exercise! Still not nearly the same from many year's ago!
This was similar to the 1984 all-around where Mary Lou opened the competition leading over Szabo, but would lose her lead over her only to grab the win with a perfect 10 vault.
I'm not sure why they awarded her vault a perfect 10, given the feet apart and small hop back she took. There were also a lot of sketchy perfect 10s in the '88 Olympics. Judging seems to have been a lot less strict back then. Even Nadia's infamous perfect 10 on the uneven bars in '76 wasn't really perfect; she, too, took a small hop/step back on her landing.
I agree with you both but I have been thinking about the idea of "Visually Perfect" vs actual Perfection in gymnastics... I think it's would be a very interesting debate with the current gymnastics climate.
Interesting that in 1984 and 1988 the AA silver medalists would have won with the new life rule, but in 1992 the silver medalist would have won had it not been for the new life rule.

Both Silivas and Shushunova were deserving of the Gold. Shushunova won the Team and the AA with 2 Golds but Silivas brought home 3 Golds in the Individual Finals. They are equal.
I'm Romanian, and with all due respect to Nadia and all her contribution to the sport and fame she brought to our country...I still like watching Silivas more. Silivas loves her job, she's joyfull and every floor routine of hers is a party. Nadia is...ice cold. Silivas seems more...human.

Such an interesting point..in those days i was an olympic weightlifter..and got the chance to meet several athletes of the eastern bloc..i remember when i asked to a bulgarian lifter why they did not celebrate their medals he answered me, its just my job..no need to emotional showing...In fact Nadia seems to got more control of his feelings...
That's questionable. I'd prefer stylish dramatic routine with gypsy music over that robotic dance any day. Other than that, and Daniela's beam mount, they both equally entertaining. Shoushounova had bigger skills and Bars though.

And do you know why they’ ve changed the scoring? I think it was for making it easier for other biotypes to win.

Nice recount... but yes, even Silivas acknowledges that it was the terrible decision by the Romanian coaches to do the double double on floor that led to the silver medal. She had never competed that element before and to throw it in team prelims in this era where all scores counted was a very bad move.

Silivas was the most technically sound and consistent, overall gymnast of her era. Her form and precision was only ever matched by Aurelia Dobre, and that was for only one competitive season. And it's true that the double-double is what likely cost her that medal. But I often think about how the Romanian coaches falsified her age for '85 Worlds. Similarly, Szabo's age had been falsified at '81 Worlds. Bothe were heavy favorites for the AA gold at their respective Olympics and subsequent World Championships. I often wonder if it was karma or if that history played a part in the judging back then.
I prefer Shushunova's style of gymnastics. I never really liked Silivas style. I really disliked that robotic dance sequence in Silivas's floor routine. Great video - Thank You.

Only on floor, not the other events. This situation is exactly why they eliminated carrying over the scores for the next quad. Good choice. Of course, getting rid of the 10 scoring system was an even smarter decision- opened things up and encouraged innovation.

You’re right on both parts. She pretty much fell in optionals but in all-around finals she took a step on her bars dismount. But we all know MLR’s memory isn’t as accurate as video evidence is 😂

It was called a Tong Fei, a one and three quarter Arabian roll out. It was a tumble she had used fairly consistently for about 4 years by that point. Shushunova
did use a Thomas as her first tumble (and the Tong Fei second) at the 1987 Europeans, and also showed one in 1991, three years after retirement, at an invitational meet.
She's lucky she never landed wrong on her neck like Elena Muckhina did that paralyzed her for her short life.
Shushunova made more mistakes . Step on uneven bars The wobble on beam and step on dismount. Over scored, should had been 9.9, same as silivas.

Silivas did score higher during this phase of the competition, but for the final total they carried over scores from compulsories and qualifications in which Shushunova was ahead. Shushunova ended up with 79.662 and Silivas with 79.637.

Wow! These countries work so harder then USA at that time! They're so strong and amazing. I remember sit watching them and rooting for them because they were so graceful and try some stunts that USA didn't! I little was disappointed in USA gymnastics then! Now USA and others countries are about equal in gymnastics! They just don't do stunts like they use to! They shown strength then and I see some on the uneven bars and going they some on the floor exercise! Still not nearly the same from many year's ago!

This was similar to the 1984 all-around where Mary Lou opened the competition leading over Szabo, but would lose her lead over her only to grab the win with a perfect 10 vault.
I'm not sure why they awarded her vault a perfect 10, given the feet apart and small hop back she took. There were also a lot of sketchy perfect 10s in the '88 Olympics. Judging seems to have been a lot less strict back then. Even Nadia's infamous perfect 10 on the uneven bars in '76 wasn't really perfect; she, too, took a small hop/step back on her landing.
I agree with you both but I have been thinking about the idea of "Visually Perfect" vs actual Perfection in gymnastics... I think it's would be a very interesting debate with the current gymnastics climate.

Both Silivas and Shushunova were deserving of the Gold. Shushunova won the Team and the AA with 2 Golds but Silivas brought home 3 Golds in the Individual Finals. They are equal.
I'm Romanian, and with all due respect to Nadia and all her contribution to the sport and fame she brought to our country...I still like watching Silivas more. Silivas loves her job, she's joyfull and every floor routine of hers is a party. Nadia is...ice cold. Silivas seems more...human.
Such an interesting point..in those days i was an olympic weightlifter..and got the chance to meet several athletes of the eastern bloc..i remember when i asked to a bulgarian lifter why they did not celebrate their medals he answered me, its just my job..no need to emotional showing...In fact Nadia seems to got more control of his feelings...

That's questionable. I'd prefer stylish dramatic routine with gypsy music over that robotic dance any day. Other than that, and Daniela's beam mount, they both equally entertaining. Shoushounova had bigger skills and Bars though.
