I have seen Ren perform live many times and I was there that day. The crowd always really appreciates him, whoever he is performing with - it is almost impossible for people to walk past. They just have to stop and watch. It’s magical.

“He hears music differently.” I think that’s it, it explains how novel and creative his musical compositions are. They don’t follow “regular” patterns that we’re used to. He’s playing with playing! Almost a little mad scientist’s gleam.

As an artist, I think it’s beautiful that he is so comfortable using all of the tools at his disposal. I’m a visual artist, and in my terms it’s like he’s making mixed media songs. Plus, how much does it rock that, not only does he surround himself with talented people, but he has no ego with taking a backseat to showcase their skill? He’s so comfortable with himself that he really lets his partners shine.

13:25 - It's numinous. Ren's got the feeling of an old soul and a student of the game even after becoming a master. You can feel the thousands of hours of playing and tens of thousands of years of listening to the greats of all genres.
Check out the Big push 'I Shot the Sheriff / Road to zion / Hip hop'. And I think I get what you are saying about Ren's ear. That is why he finds such talents to work with as well. And you can feel it in your bones in what he does.

When you can have a crowd gather with only a set of Mics and a Guitar, you know you have something special. Sam reminds me of Justin Timberlake so much, he kinda looks like Justin too. Even mannerisms. Do Chalk Outlines!
Sam is good..pitchy at times..but Ren is at another level...raw n unreal...his guitar playing is also epic
I have to agree with you on Ren hearing things different I noticed that when I first heard him in Hi Ren that very first guitar solo that he does you can hear the twist The angst the emotional response in the guitar like it's speaking I remember thinking it have this certain chaotic twang.

I heard that Sam Tompkins is in the studio with Justin Bieber right now. Ren is going through 6 months of medical treatments in Canada. Let's hope that both of these amazing artists go as far as they can and take over the music world by showing everyone what pure talent is.

Fantastic heartfelt reaction to this one! What you were saying about how he's hearing things differently sounds absolutely fascinating. I'll have to watch him more closely next time I watch one of his videos. Man, I've been a fan for years, always new layers to peel back from onion boy over here.
Ren and Sam have another performance similar to this one and just as amazing called Walking On the Moon/No Diggity. To see their talent at it's rawest and being forced to improvise and rocking it, look at their Blind Eyed performance featuring Angry Car Park Attendant. It's equal parts hilarious and impressive.

Folks may find this a strange comparison, but Ren's different ear reminds me of Beethoven. He had mental health problems as well, severe depression and then his increasing deafness and the fact he was a peasant with the mind of a genius in a class dominated society. Beethoven introduces new sounds into music and all of a sudden gets more and more radical from the age of 32/33, the same age as Ren now. Also Beethoven famously said you need to know the rules to break them, they also share the thing that music should come from the heart however intellectual it is...

Man you can see there is knowhere these two would rather be than right there. I love Sam and Ren so so so so so much. I love The Big Push. They ALL should be kiiling it. They are being robbed in the way they should be on everyones lips. They are all fantastic muso's, collectively they are so so so so so good.
